Michio stood in the Kazekage's office with Shinken as his teammate reported their mission's success and handed over the headbands. When the Kazekage didn't tell him to return the headbands to the school, Michio was dumbfounded. What the hell was going on? Was he now rethinking giving the headbands to the children for their play? What kind of monster was this guy anyway? Then the Kazekage attempted to provoke him by getting a shot in about his appearance. He grunted but said nothing in response.

The Kazekage informed Shinken and Michio that they were to be assigned to a new Jounin and that they were not to fight with him or that they would be banned from continuing their careers as shinobi and that the Jounin would meet with them in the morning. Michio opened his mouth to ask about defending himself should the Jounin attack him, as was the situation last time, or about the fact that the Jounin might test his combat skills to see where he needed improvement, but before he could get the words out, Shinken grabbed his arm and pulled him from the office. Probably for the best, because that discussion could have gotten incredibly heated.

Once outside, Shinken spoke of hitting the hay, and Michio nodded. “I'm not sure how far away your house is, but mine's only a few blocks away. You're more than welcome to stay the night if you want to.”

Shinken considered the options for a couple of minutes, then nodded. Michio smiled and jerked his head over his shoulder and turned to leave as a figure flashed in front of him. Once the form settled, both Michio and Shinken could see that it was Sayomi, and she looked particularly upset.

“Michio! The next time you go on a mission and don't let me help or give me a task that an academy student could have handled, I'm going to punch you right in your face!” she yelled at him, and Michio couldn't help but smile at her, which fueled her anger. “What are you smiling about?! I'm a Chuunin, damn you!”

“Sayomi, when's the last time you went on a mission?” he asked her, folding his arms.

“Two days ago. Why does that matter?” she retorted, a scowl displaying across her expression.

“Did anyone insist on going on that mission?”

“No but-”

“If anyone did who you didn't think was necessary to completing the mission, would you have let them? Or if they were just going to be in the way, would you have still let them?”

The questions were doing exactly the opposite of what Michio was trying to do; reason with her and calm her down. She was getting more and more upset by the second and Michio rolled his eyes. “Look Sayomi-chan, this was our mission and we didn't need your help to complete it, clearly. In the event that a mission comes up that we feel we'll need your assistance with, I personally will be sure to let you know.”

Sayomi was still upset, but she said nothing and merely glared at him. His reasoning wasn't terrible, but her feelings were still apparently hurt from her lack of inclusion. Michio stared her down in turn, and it was Shinken who had to step between them to keep a fight from breaking out. Sayomi's gaze fell from Michio to Shinken and her expression softened.

Michio spoke up over Shinken's head, “Sayomi, it's been a long day and I'm feeling tired. I'm heading home. Shinken's staying at my place tonight. You're welcome to do the same if you want.” Sayomi's gaze went back to Michio and she pondered this for a moment before nodding defeatedly. Sure that the fighting was over for the night, Michio used his body's bone crafting to break down the bone armor and reabsorb the calcium into his system, his skin's ripples and shape returning to normal, then jerked his head again. “Let's go guys. If I don't get some sleep, I'm going to get cranky.”

Together, the three of them returned to Michio's apartment and retired for the night. “Just a heads up...” he told them, “Shisara and I have moved our rooms together, so we have a room that's available. There's still only one bed though. You guys decide who's going to get it and who get's the couch.” And with that, he went to his room and changed into sleeping wear. When he took his shirt off, the long gash that went around his right side was clearly visible.

“Oh my god Michio! How do you keep letting these things happen?!” Shisara scolded him, but he merely grunted in response. She used her chakra to heal him and it hurt really badly. He groaned from the pain and then suddenly it felt immediately better. He laid on his chest on the bed and she smiled at him, placing a hand on his left shoulder blade and pressing gently. He groaned again as she hit a knot and she positioned better, starting to give him a back rub. The sounds he emitted were little better than inappropriate and through the closed door it couldn't have sounded kosher. She continued to rub out his sore muscles until it started to become painful, in which case he rolled over and pulled her down to him. She giggled and laid atop of him as they began to express affection to one another until they fell asleep, nearly at the same time.

The next morning, Michio awoke to a knock on his door and rolled towards the sound. “Nnn...” he groaned and went to get up, but found that his arm was still between the bed and Shisara's neck. He kissed her gently on the shoulder and slid his arm out, then rose from the bed, heading to the front room and opened the door. A man almost as tall as Michio stood in the doorway, dressed in a pair of black cloth pants, a long sleeved black shirt, and an olive colored vest. He looked up ever so slightly into Michio's face and put a hand up.

“Yo.” the man said, and Michio, who was still groggy, raised an eyebrow at him.

“Can I help you?” he asked, trying to be polite to the man who had disturbed his slumber. It did not escape Michio's notice that it was early... really early.

“I am Miyamoto Kuno, your new Jounin.”
the man said, a smile on his face. “Nice scar, by the way.” Michio looked down and saw that he was shirtless and the gash from the previous night had scarred over despite the healing jutsu that had been used on it.

“Kind of early, don't you think?”
he mumbled, turning and signaling for Kuno to follow him inside. The man did so and looked around.

“You must live with a woman.”
he said, ignoring Michio's question altogether. “This place is as clean as a whistle.”

Michio nodded, opening the fridge and pulling out a carton of orange juice and a few glasses. “Give me a second. Something's missing from this picture...” he told the Jounin with a monotone voice, walking over to where Shinken had decided to pass out and waking him. Shinken awoke with a jolt and Michio stepped back reflexively. 'Must've been having a nightmare....' he thought, but once Shinken had rubbed the sleep from his eyes and once the Sharingan had faded from his eyes, Michio spoke to him again.

“Our Jounin's here.” he told his partner and left the room, returning to find that Kuno was looking at a picture on the wall of Shisara and Michio the night after her graduation from the academy. Seven years seemed like so long ago and Michio couldn't help but smile at the picture.

“Who's this?” Kuno asked him.

“That's Hizaki Shisara, my...” he almost said 'girlfriend' but caught himself. “... roommate. She's still asleep in the other room, so please keep your voice down.”

“I'm awake!” Shisara's voice called from the bedroom and he frowned. Michio had intended to let her sleep a little while longer, but apparently the cold air of the morning took the place of his warm body when he'd slipped out of bed.

“I'll be right back.” he told Kuno and retreated to his bedroom, closing the door. Shisara was laying on her back and looked up at him as he went to her and sat on the edge of the bed.

“Good morning, Shisara.” he told her, leaning down for a kiss. She pecked him back and smiled. “Sorry to have woken you. My new Jounin decided to make a house call.” Shisara's eyes widened and she sat up quickly, accidentally headbutting Michio who cried out in surprise.

“Why is he here?!" she hissed, her voice a whisper.

“I don't know! I thought we were going to meet him at the Kazekage's office in a few hours!” he whispered back, rubbing his nose as she scrambled from the bed and changed into her day clothes. She sighed and tied her headband around her waist, then smoothed out her tights.

“Well, let's make him feel at home. We don't want him to think you're rude for making him wait so long.”

Together they emerged from the bedroom, Michio still in his night clothes. He went back to the counter and got another glass, pouring four glasses of orange juice and offering one to Kuno.

“Oh, thank you!” he said, accepting the beverage and looking to Shisara. “Sorry to wake you, Ms. Hizaki. I thought it best that I meet with my Genin informally. I hadn't thought that one of them would be living with someone. Please accept my apologies.” Kuno bowed to her and then chugged the orange juice, emptying the glass in a matter of seconds. Michio looked at him with an amused expression and then looked over as Shinken decided to join them. He was still dressed in his shinobi clothes, though it wasn't surprising. Shinken hadn't exactly brought a change of clothes with him. Behind Michio, Shisara went to make breakfast, cooking up some eggs and toast in record time and setting the table, then went to make Sayomi get up.

“Well, now that you're both awake and present, I guess I should go over the basics. My name is Miyamoto Kuno, and I am your new Jounin. I've already looked over your files and I have to say I'm somewhat impressed. Kaguya Michio, heir to the bone wielding clan. Fiery temper. Incredible taijutsu prowess. Almost no talent for Ninjutsu or Genjutsu. Stubborn attitude and severe disregard for authority.” he said as he took a seat and motioned for the two Genin to do the same. “And Shinken, orphaned at birth, heir to the dishonored Katsuna family. Respectful, but ambitious. Average taijutsu talent, above average with Ninjutsu, specalized in Genjutsu. Recently awakened the Sharingan and has begun to master it in it's early stage.”

When Shinken looked bewildered that Kuno knew about the Sharingan, the Jounin smiled simply at him. “Nothing that happens in this village goes undocumented, Shinken-kun. The second you started using your doujutsu, someone was bound to take notice. Don't worry, only the ANBU, the Kazekage, and everyone in this room know about it.”

“Now that we have introductions out of the way, why don't you start by telling me what you expect to get out of being a shinobi? Is it fame? Power? Or is it a need to feel accepted?”

Michio snorted at all of those suggestions and leaned back in his chair, folding his arms. “The only thing I'm after is being able to survive on a day to day basis.”

Kuno raised an eyebrow, “Then why not just get a day job? Why be a shinobi if you just want to survive? We don't exactly have a long life expectancy.”

Michio said nothing, but thought for a moment about what he really wanted. During his silence, Shinken explained his desires and Michio couldn't help but be surprised. He'd already known that Shinken wanted to bring honor back to his adoptive family's name, but the rest he hadn't known about. Perhaps he should've done some more talking with his partner.

Finally, Michio spoke about his goals. “Other than keeping everyone I care for safe, I want to change the way things are. This status quo that our world lives in is unfair and only benefits those who are willing to seize power and keep others from doing so. I'd do anything to create a level playing field for all people, civilians and shinobi alike.”

“Sort of an odd goal, considering that shinobi possess talents that civilians can't possibly dream of.” Kuno responded, but was satisfied with their answers. “On that note, all of the formalities are out of the way. I think I've got just the thing for our first exercise as a team.”

It was Michio's turn to raise an eyebrow, “And what's that Kuno?”

“Kuno-sensei.” the Jounin interjected. “I'm not here to break your spirit or try to turn you into an obedient dog like most of the other Jounin might. All I ask in return for not being just another Hanako is that you show me the common decency of recognizing that I am your superior officer.”

Michio smirked at the reference to their last Jounin, who had been some immature, spoiled child of the Hyuuga main branch. “Alright then, Kuno-sensei, what do you have in mind?”

“First, we eat. Then, we take on a misson.” Kuno told them, bowing his head to Shisara and devouring the breakfast in record time. Michio matched him bite for bite, but went the extra mile by downing the glass of orange juice in only two gulps. In unison, Kuno and Michio leaned back in their chairs and groaned appreciatively, holding their stomachs as Shisara beamed. Once Shinken, Shisara, and Sayomi had all eaten, Kuno stood and motioned for the door.

“Come on you two, let's get this going.” he said, and Sayomi looked to Michio, who shook his head at her. She looked disappointed but nodded, looking to Shisara. Shisara was confused at the silent discussion but had an inkling as to what it was about. She shrugged and pulled Sayomi to the kitchen to have her help with washing the morning dishes. Michio considered kissing Shisara goodbye, but that would jeopardize the secret of their relationship as Kuno was still standing there. He waved to her and tapped Shinken on the shoulder as he walked past him. Michio jogged to his room and dressed in his new shinobi suit then returned to the others. Together, Shinken, Michio, and Kuno left the apartment and began making their way to the Kazekage's office.

As soon as they reached the courtyard of the apartment, Michio lit up a cigarette and Kuno looked over at him disapprovingly. “What? I'm old enough.” he told his new Jounin, who shook his head.

“How you have the lung capacity to be a Taijutsu specialist is beyond me if you're going to continue to smoke, Michio-kun.”
Kuno told him and prompted a shrug from his Genin. A few minutes went by before they reached the mission retrieval floor of the Kazekage's office and Michio couldn't help but ask him what the mission was going to be.

“There's a house on the edge of the village where an ambassador from the Hidden Leaf village has made his stay and we are to escort him from there to the Kazekage. Supposedly there are people in the village who would rather we not continue good relations with the other villages, shinobi and civilians alike, so our job is going to be to back up the ANBU who are going to keep watch on him out of sight. We're merely the first deterrent, and we're not to engage even if the enemies are not shinobi. We merely guard the ambassador from harm.”

“If the ambassador is from Konoha and the ANBU are already on this, why does the Kazekage need us to take care of this?” he asked, and Kuno chuckled.

“The ambassador, despite being from Konoha, is not a shinobi. He's just a courtier who's here to speak to the Kazekage about an upcoming event that our village and his are going to partake in.”

“What aren't you telling us?”

“I'm not at liberty to say, just know that you two stand a good chance at participating in the event if you keep your head down and follow the mission's orders to their fullest.”

They reached the Kazekage building and picked up the mission, then began heading out to the north edge of the village. As they went, Michio read the mission orders. As Kuno had told them, they were to escort this ambassador of the Village Hidden in the Leaves from the outskirts of town to the Kazekage's office. In the event of being engaged by the enemy, they were to protect the ambassador at any costs, even their own lives, but they could not fight back in a way that would endanger the ambassador's life. Michio knew exactly what he would do if they were attacked and Kuno didn't miss the determination in his eyes. But something worried Kuno about the mission. They arrived at the house about a half an hour later, which turned out to be a guard house, and Michio's expression turned from anticipation to anger.

The ambassador that had been sent was a frail, older gentleman who's clothes bore the clan symbol for the Inuzuka, a clan symbol that Michio would never forget. Scenes of his parent's getting murdered by the Inuzuka played out in his mind and his anger began to build. Kuno put a hand on Michio's shoulder and the Kaguya shrugged it off, glaring at his Jounin. The mission didn't detail that the ambassador would be of the Inuzuka clan, nor had Kuno told him, so he was already upset with his new team leader. This didn't bode well for their student-teacher relationship.

It was shortly after Shinken had decided that he was going to spend the night at Michio’s house that Sayomi appeared. She was very irrate and after she and the Kaguya exchanged words the young Uchiha was forced to step in between them to avoid a fight.

“Both of you stop it! It was a mission that was assigned to us Sayomi. How would you feel if someone insisted on joining in? Wouldn’t that make you think that they doubted your abilities? Do you doubt our abilities?” Shinken asked before turning to Michio.

“And you! She was just trying to help us out. You don’t have to insult her.” The young gennin said with an exasperated sigh. With the fight averted Shinken and Sayomi headed over to Michio’s apartment to turn in for the night. Sayomi insisted that Shinken take the bed because he needed a good night’s rest more than she did. Little did she know his sleep was going to be anything but restful. It took the young ninja almost an hour of tossing and turning to finally get to sleep. He wasn’t sure if it was all of the excitement of the day, or if it was something else, but sleep eluded him. When he finally did get to sleep his dreams were anything but pleasant.

Shinken seemed to be floating in a lake of darkness, the more he struggled to stay afloat the harder the liquid shadows tried to pull him under. After a few minutes he couldn’t struggle any longer and he was pulled under the surface. He felt the breath leave his lungs and the cold slick darkness force it’s way down his throat. He wanted to scream but no sound left his lips. The world went dark and just when he thought it was all over for him he suddenly found himself in a new location. He was standing atop the Kazekage’s office. As he looked down at himself wondering how he was alive he saw that he was wearing Kage’s clothes.

The village below him seemed more peaceful than any day under the current Kazekage, but he couldn’t help but wonder what was going on. One second he had been about to drown in darkness and now he was dressed in the Kazekage’s robes. Down on the streets below someone saw him and waved happily. Shinken removed the traditional Kage’s hat and leaped down to the street. The people there were startled at first but then they all smiled at him and a child in the crowd shouted excitedly.

“Look Mom! It’s Kage Katsuna!” The boy yelled as he jumped up and down excitedly. Shinken was beyond confused. He wasn’t the Kazekage. Or was he? Suddenly everything seemed so right. Of course he was the Kazekage. He had been the ninja to defend the Viilage even from itself. He had brought about all the changes required to truly achieve peace. Everyone in the village was happy now. The Uchiha flashed a smile at the child who looked as if he were going to faint from glee.

As Shinken made his rounds as the Kage he greeted people on the street, and even stopped by the Academy to give a few pointers to the students there. All of the teachers bowed in reverence to him. He felt a beaming sense of pride. His name, and by proxy his family’s name was one that brought smiles to the faces of the villagers. His brother’s misdeeds had been long buried and forgotten, and his journey had brought him to his final destination.

The sky began to darken with black clouds and very suddenly something felt very, very wrong. It was as if a dark shadow had been cast over the whole village. The people went silent, turning almost a ghostly white. Shinken looked around confused, and worried for the fate of his village and its inhabitants. From the sky a black figure descended, and where his feet touched the ground the life seemed to seep out of the very air itself. The buildings around him crumbled to dust and the people seemed to just fade away into nothingness. Knowing that it was his duty as Kazekage to protect the village Shinken moved to intercept the dark figure. When he got closer he saw that the man was wearing a mask that hid his face.

“STOP! This is my village and I won’t let you destroy it!” Shinken said feeling his own inner darkness flare to life. His rage at the attack on his home filled him and he suddenly felt much like Michio. Where was his friend? Surely he would want to protect the village as well. Shaking off the errant thoughts the Uchiha activated his sharingan and put himself in the dark figure’s way.

“You’re not taking another step!” He shouted as he began to from the hand seals for the fireball jutsu he had learned so long ago. The flames roared to life as they exited his mouth and shot towards the masked intruder. The man wordlessly batted the jutsu aside as if he were some kind of god. Shinken didn’t stop there however. He began to form the seals for another jutsu. If this man was capable of deflecting his fire style then he would just have to try another element. The Uchiha had used his sharingan to copy many jutsu over the years and had several techniques of each element at his disposal. This time he tried a wind based technique. A powerful air bullet expelled from the mouth. As the wind chakra built up in his lungs Shinken also began to knead chakra in his mouth. When the bullet was finally expelled he shaped it into a razor sharp blade that would cut the intruder in two.

The masked man seemed completely unconcerned with the attack and for good reason. He seemed to simply walk through the attack. Shinken’s eyes were able to see that the man some how teleported through the attack at the last second. Whoever this man was his skills were impressive. The Uchiha was forced to jump back as the man advanced. He couldn’t let what was happening to the villagers happen to him. He had to save the village.

Thinking through all of his long range techniques Shinken decided that he would trap this man in a genjutsu. If he couldn’t move then he couldn’t hurt anyone. As he tried to lock eyes with the oncoming intruder the Uchiha felt something odd. Before he could realize what it was he was locked in his own genjutsu. The masked man had turned his own mind against him. It took everything the Uchiha had to break out of the illusion. He thanked his lucky stars that he had broken the jutsu when he did because the man less than a foot away from erasing Shinken from existence.

The Uchiha jumped back and cursed loudly. This guy was incredibly strong. Nothing Shinken try seemed to even phase him in the slightest. He couldn’t hold back, not even a little bit. With that knowledge in mind he began to rapidly form hand signs. As he did so he created wind chakra in his lungs and kneaded fire chakra in his mouth. He was going to use one of his stronger techniques, Wind Style: Dragon Flame Release. As he exhaled the wind chakra mixed with the fire chakra and ignited creating an incredibly hot and intense blue stream of flame that turned the sand in front of him to glass in an instant. The masked man began to make hand seals of his own and threw out a clay dragon surrounded by a spiral of water. The two jutsu clashed and in the end they canceled each other out.. At least Shinken knew that the masked man couldn’t withstand an attack like that.

“Who are you?! Why are you attacking my Village?!” The Uchiha demanded as he began to form hand seals for an earth style jutsu. He would trap this man in the earth itself and halt his advance in an instant. There was a dark and distorted laugh from behind the mask as the man began to make his own hand seals.

“You can’t stop me.” Was all the booming voice from behind the mask said as he finished his jutsu. The ground swelled beneath him becoming a living creature. It was a giant turtle made of stone. That threw Shinken’s plan out the window. His jutsu could hold a person but not a giant summon like that. He bit his thumb and began forming seals for a summoning jutsu of his own. As he slammed his hand into the ground there was a huge puff of smoke and Shinken was left sitting on the head of a great dragon almost twice the size of the turtle.

“I have a summon too.” The uchiha said darkly. The man in the mask laughed at the dragon as he made seals to create the same air bullet jutsu Shinken had used earlier. His Turtle opened it’s mouth and fired a blast of water large enough to flood several blocks of the sand village, and on queue the masked man launched his air bullet just behind it. Shinken knew he couldn’t counter the water jutsu with just his fire, so he did the only thing he could thing of. He gathered all of the wind chakra he could muster, and his dragon inhaled deeply. As the dragon breathed its flame out to intercept the water blast, Shinken unleashed the strongest gust of wind he could to fuel the flames. The result was an enormous version of the Wind Style: Dragon Flame Release Jutsu. The white hot flame vaporized the water bullet, and ate through the chakra of the air bullet.

The masked man teleported off of his turtle just in time as the stone giant was blown to pieces by the powerful fire jutsu. Shinken had been so focused on the fire based attack that he didn’t see man teleport behind him. The masked man touched down on the dragon who let out a cry of pain and began to wither and die. Shinken’s eyes went wide and he jumped to a nearby rooftop just in time to avoid being caught in whatever Jutsu allowed this man to cause decay and destruction on such a massive scale.

The Uchiha could feel the strain on his chakra network beginning to build up. He didn’t have much time left to end this fight. The masked man on the other hand seemed to have an unlimited amount of stamina. Just what kind of monster was this guy? No one was invincible but the masked man seemed to have an answer for everything Shinken threw at him. It was almost like he knew what the Uchiha was going to do before he did it, but that wasn’t possible… was it?

There was a loud crack followed by a deep rumbling as lightning struck between the two combatants. Rain began to fall from the sky, and Shinken cursed. That was only going to make any water style jutsu this guy had stronger. Meanwhile his fire style was going to be far less effective. It was a losing proposition.

“Why do you continue to fight for them?” The man in the mask asked, almost sounding sincere. Shinken found himself forced to answer the question. His mouth would not obey his mind.

“Because this is my home. These are my people. It is my responsibility to protect them!” He shouted. The Uchiha could almost feel the man behind the mask smile. Was that the answer he was looking for? Why did he even care? What grudge did he hold against the village.

“But is it really your home? Are they really your people?” The masked man asked. As he spoke the words it was as if Shinken had been thrown into a genjutsu. He was forced to relive all of the discrimination he and his family had been subject to. The crimes the village had committed against him. He shook his head trying to push the thoughts from his mind.

“No! I changed things! The village is different now!” He cried clutching his head. The masked man took another step forward and the world began to spin. Suddenly Shinken was only 10 years old and the entire village surrounded him. They pointed and accused him of being a traitor. They threw garbage and stones at him forcing the Uchiha to cover his head and his face. Finally he had enough and he lashed out with his chakra, severing the genjutsu.

“That’s ENOUGH!’ The Uchiha shouted as he began to form the hand seals for his most powerful Jutsu. This was it he was going to end this fight right here and right now. He would bring peace back to the village once again, and be hailed as the hero he knew he was. As the final seal was formed Shinken glared up at the masked man who was now standing over him. The Jutsu that had ruined the village and erased the villagers was no more, now there was only this figure towering over him. With all of the chakra he could muster Shinken cloaked himself in flame. The flames continued to eat at the air around him growing larger and more intense until both he and the masked man were consumed in the flames. They grew even further as the Uchiha started making hand signs for the second part of the Jutsu. By the time he had reached the required amount of fire, nearly half a block of the village had been consumed. Then he slammed together the final seal and unleashed the wind vacuum that turned the flames first into a bright blue as the condensed down and then to a white hot flame that vaporized the very stone of the buildings. When the flames faded and the Jutsu was over Shinken was almost completely out of Chakra and he looked up to where the Masked man had been standing . He was still there though his mask cracked and fell away. What Shinken saw stunned him into silence. The man behind the mask was his brother...well half of him was anyway. The other half looked like Shinken. When the man spoke it was both the Uchiha’s own voice, and the voice of his brother in perfect sync.

“You can’t beat me, because you are me. No matter what you do, we’ll always be the same. You can deny me all you want, but I’m still here. You can’t get rid of me, and no matter how much you lie to yourself you can’t change what you are.” The hybrid laughed. Shinken’s eyes went wide and he was about to deny the man’s claims when he was shaken awake.

The young Uchiha woke with a start yelling and throwing a punch which nearly clipped Michio in the knee cap. He was covered in sweat and breathing heavily. When he realized he was in the apartment and not in the terrifying dream he relaxed and his sharingan deactivated. He felt exhausted and he rubbed his eyes trying to wake up. He hadn’t had a nightmare that bad in a very very long time. When Michio informed the Uchiha that their Jounin was in the apartment he looked at the Kaguya confused. Their Jounin was supposed to meet them at the Kazekage’s office. Why was he here in the apartment?

Groggily Shinken got to his feet and stretched out. His heart was still racing from the nightmare, but he told himself it was just a dream, that t didn’t matter, it was just a nightmare, but deep down the Uchiha was highly disturbed. It took the gennin a few minutes to collect himself and slow his heart rate. By the time he had done this he could already smell Shisara’s cooking. He walked out into the main part of Michio’s apartment and took a seat at the table. He wished he had a change of clothes, he probably smelled of sweat and blood from yesterday’s mission. Shinken was oddly quiet as their Jounin introduced himself. When Miyamoto went over their capabilities the Uchiha looked at him confused. How did he know so much about them already? The young gennin was espeically confused as to how he knew about the sharingan. The Jounin explained that the Kazekage and Anbu already knew about Shinken’s ability to use the sharingan and that they were going to keep it a secret. Then he asked why Michio and Shinken wanted to be Shinobi. Considering the dream he had last night the question hit Shinken particularly hard. He had to take a moment to really think before he answered the question.

“I want to prove that my family aren’t traitors. That we are proud citizens of the hidden Sand, but more than that I’m sick of how this system bullies the little people. I want to be remembered as the ninja that changed the village. I want to be Kage someday, and bring peace to everyone in the village. I want to prove that you don’t have to be full of hate to be strong.” Shinken said. The last part of his statement contradicted some of the things he had done right after he got out of the academy, but his dream had shown him something. If you gave into things like hate then you would become a monster and destroy everything around you. You had to cling on to what you loved and the people that were important to you. You had to protect them no matter the cost.

As the conversation continued on Shinken simply listened. He was uncharacteristically silent as everyone eat breakfast. He pushed his food around his plate, he didn’t exactly have a big appetite as the image of the two faced man burned in his mind. It was just a dream why couldn’t he shake it off? Had there been some note of truth to it? Or was it that he as so deeply disturbed by the fact that his mind was capable of such an idea?

When their Jounin told them to move out Shinken did his best to shake himself from his dark mood and nodded with as much sincerity as he could muster. He would have to get this dream off of his chest by talking to someone about it. Maybe Michio wasn’t in the dream for a reason? He’d probably just make fun of the young Uchiha for letting a dream get to him, but he was his best friend, and if he couldn’t talk to his best friend who could he talk to?

As they stepped out into the courtyard Shinken listened to the instructions of his Jounin. Apparently they were going to be escorting someone from the hidden leaf to the Kazekage’s office. It sounded like a really easy mission, so why did he get the feeling that it was going to be complicated? He only had to wait a few seconds for his question to be answered. The VIP wasn’t a shinobi, but rather a courtier. Shinken had to agree that there seemed to be something that the Jounin wasn’t telling them, but he let it go. After a while they arrived at the location where they were supposed to meet the VIP. When Shinken saw the symbol for the Inuzuka clan on the old man’s robes he tensed up. His mind flashed back to how angry Michio had gotten when Shisara’s clone had transformed into an Inuzuka. Their Jounin put a hand on the Kaguya’s shoulder but he shook it off. Shinken took a moment to do the same thing but he whispered to his teammate.

“I know you don’t like the Inuzuka, but we have to do this mission if we want to change the way things work around here. Remember why you want to be a shinobi.” Shinken said as he squeezed his friend’s shoulder. He hoped that Michio could reign in his temper and get the job done.

“Greetings. We will be your protectors and your guides through the Sand village today.” Shinken said trying to sound as pleasant as possible to make up for Michio’s bad attitude. His words had reached his teammate, but he was still in a foul mood. The Inuzuka gave Shinken a polite nod and began to make his way down the street. The young Uchiha followed behind the old man and pointed out notable shops and locations giving tidbits of knowledge to the old man to try and keep him from noticing how angry Michio seemed to be.

The older Inuzuka smiled and took to Shinken’s guided tour with interest. So far keeping the two of them apart seemed to be working. Kuno noticed what the young Uchiha was doing and gave him a nod. It seemed he had figured out why Michio was in such a bad mood, or at least what had triggered it.

While Shinken was pointing things out he was also keeping an eye out for anyone that seemed suspicious. Anything that was out of place he studied until he felt that it was not a threat to the VIP. Eventually they passed by a food shop and the VIP suddenly stopped. Shinken took another three steps before he realized that the old man was no longer following him. As he backtracked he saw the VIP ordering some fried dumplings on a stick. He let out an exasperated sigh. This was not part of the plan. Every moment they lingered was a moment they were vulnerable to attack.

Michio had shrugged off Kuno's attempt to calm him down, but when Shinken did it, he turned his glare to his teammate. A dark fury blazed in his right eye and even without the Sharingan, Shinken would have been able to see the wind chakra flowing through him like a typhoon. Shinken spoke to Michio about completing the mission. He reminded him of his goals and Michio clenched his jaw. 'Easy for him to say, he didn't have to watch as his mother looked at him with teary eyes as her throat was torn out or get lied to by his father that everything was going to be okay moments before getting his eyes snatched out and his chest ripped open and his heart pulled from it's place and...' Michio thought, his rage boiling over as he turned away from the Inuzuka, the gory scene flashing through his mind. Pure, unadulterated hatred oozed from Michio as he reached up with a shaking hand to his vest, pulling out the pack of cigarettes and lighting one. As he smoked, Shinken greeted the member of his enemy's clan and Michio couldn't help but be mad at Shinken for it. He knew it wasn't as if Shinken was trying to make him angry and it was that thought alone that kept him from exploding on his teammate.

Kuno watched Michio intently as they began walking, and though he was still fuming, Michio couldn't blame his Jounin for being worried. Only a half hour into their first mission and Michio was inches away from causing them to fail it. The Kaguya continued smoking, as it seemed to help focus his mind, and did his best to ignore their charge's complaints about the smell. After a few minutes of traveling, Shinken's attention turned to something away from them and Michio looked to see that the ambassador had strayed from their group, putting himself at risk. He swore loudly and stomped over to the Inuzuka, his jaw now clenched again as he grabbed the man by the wrist.

“WHAT PART OF YOUR MISSION ARE YOU FAILING TO UNDERSTAND!?” he bellowed at his charge, who recoiled from him. Kuno marched over and grabbed Michio's forearm, squeezing hard enough to force Michio's tendons to open his hand.

“And what of you, Michio?”
he told the Kaguya sternly as Michio's gaze snapped to his Jounin. “The mission says that he's to reach the Kazekage's office unharmed. How's that going to happen if you snap and beat his face in for wanting to sight see and sample our village's food selection?”

Michio glared at him and snatched his arm from Kuno's grasp and snarled. “Don't you touch me! You read my file, right?! You know that my family was murdered by his clan! And despite that knowledge, you still assigned me to a mission where I have to protect their weakest, worthless excuse for a clan member! You kept that from me!”

“Oh my god...” the ambassador said, and Michio whirled on him.

“WHAT?! YOU THOUGHT YOUR CLAN WAS INNOCENT OF SPILLED BLOOD?!”
He shouted at the man, but the Inuzuka merely raised a pointing finger at something over Kuno's and Michio's shoulders. The two shinobi turned and saw that a large group of people were clearing the street on either side of them. Michio's anger subsided and he swore loudly again. The dumpling vendor cried out at the scene unfolding and pulled the stick propping up his storm-proof window flap, slamming the large wooden shutter down just as Kuno made the ambassador duck to avoid getting caught by the shutter.

“Defensive formation!” Kuno shouted, and Shinken, Kuno, and Michio created a dome of bodies around the ambassador, who was pressed against the shutter.

“Well well well, if it isn't the Konoha courtier? What a fortuitous surprise, right boys?” one of the men on the right spoke, obviously the leader of that band of thugs. The rest of the men agreed in unison, causing Michio to grit his teeth. Just how many non-shinobi was he going to have to fight in one week?

“Tsuboro, the ambassador is ours!” a man from the left side of the street yelled to the right side's leader.

“Who cares, Kakozu?! If he's dead, that's all that matters!” the man named Tsuboro retorted, folding his arms as he looked at the three shinobi and their mission's charge. It took Michio a second to recognize him, but this Tsuboro was the particularly large man from the night before. That meant that the gang on the right side were what remained of the Blood Kings, the members who had not been present when Michio and Shinken had taken out the larger portion of their gang. Though Shinken had defeated the previous leader, as gangs are known to do, a new leader stepped up, and apparently it was the fatty that had gotten away. 'Just another mistake that I have to correct.' Michio thought grimly. He didn't recognize the other gang though and that made him worry. They didn't bear any headbands, so they clearly weren't shinobi, but they did have several weapons ranging from katanas to spiked chains. Michio pursed his lips, his mind finally focused on the mission. He prepared himself by forcing an accelerated layer of bone to form under his skin and he suddenly became heavy again.

The Kaguya spoke to Shinken, “You take the gang on the left, I've got the gang on the right. They won't touch this trash. That's my job.” Kuno looked to Michio nervously and then to Shinken equally as nervous. He knew of their capabilities, but had yet to see how they operated under pressure. He crouched low and began making hand signs as Michio took one final drag and pulled the nearly burnt out cigarette from his mouth, flicking it towards the center of the street. An eternity seemed to pass as it flew through the air until it finally hit the ground, the cherry exploding in a shower of embers as it struck the dirt. Both gangs moved at the same time, the Blood Kings rushing towards Michio. He waited until the large man from before got within striking distance and leaped, matching eye level. He exhaled quickly, blowing smoke right into his opponent's eyes, which made the large man recoil. But as he landed, he caught a blade in the shoulder, a spear in the ribs, and a tetsubo on his crown. None of the attacks pierced further than his skin, but Michio could already tell he was going to need medical treatment.

“This mission sucks!” he exclaimed, taking note of the fact that Kuno was still making hand signs. 'Oh my god... how long does that jutsu take to use?!' he thought, shifting his body to intercept a spear that was attempting to sail through the gap between his right arm and his torso.

'Any minute now, ANBU...' he said to himself, grimacing from the pain his nerves were sending throughout his body as he took another spear to the chest, three more swords to his clavicles, and seven strike from tetsubos on his skull, left shoulder, left and right forearms, and even one to his kneecap. The blow didn't break anything, but it did force him to one knee. Without pause, an arrow was fired at the ambassador, which Michio had to propel himself upwards to stop it. His arms were heavy, so he couldn't use them to snatch the arrow. The arrow was mere inches from passing right over him as he entered it's path, and both fortunately and unfortunately, the tip penetrated his eyepatch and shot directly into his dead left eye, stopping at the back of his eye socket due to the heightened density of his skeletal bones. He cried out as the impact sent his head reeling back and the ambassador cried out at the sight of it.

But before anyone could even think he was dead, Michio tilted his head back towards the Blood Kings and righted his body, standing firm once more. He reached up with a hand that was trembling with anger and grabbed the shaft of the arrow. With a mighty, enraged roar Michio pulled the arrow from his eye socket... and his eyepatch and eyeball with it. Several of the Blood Kings members cried out in shock and horror when Michio did this, and he threw the projectile to the ground. Pain did not set in from the now empty eye cavity from all of the adrenaline pumping through his system and it hadn't even been processed in Michio's mind that he'd just ripped out his own eyeball.

Kuno completed his seals and finished with the bird hand sign, a great wind erupting from the air and swirling around the enemies, slicing and dicing their bodies, leaving lacerations that barely broke the skin. It was a whirlwind of epic proportions, but the damage it dealt was minimal at best. This was likely intentional considering Kuno's rank and it utterly decimated the fighting spirit that the Blood Kings still had.

As if the ANBU had been waiting for that very thing to happen, they descended on the Blood Kings, rapidly tying up and knocking out and disarming the gang members who hadn't fallen to the whirlwind as the Jounin's jutsu petered out.

Panting, Michio turned to the ambassador and growled at him, “You ready to play by the rules yet?” And then he fell to his knees, the pain in his left eye socket finally reaching his brain as the adrenaline began to fade. He groaned in pain and held his left eye with both hands, crying out as the intense pain finally overtook him. Despite the fact that his left eye had already been blinded, the pain sensors in that part of his head weren't as dead as his eyesight, and they were protesting incredibly. Blood that had already been pouring down his face in a constant flow now leaked between his fingers and down his forearms.

Kuno ran over to one of the ANBU who was marked as a medical ninja and led him back to Michio. They had to fight hard to remove his hands from his eye and Kuno had to enlist Shinken's help to keep Michio from struggling when the ANBU began to heal the wound using the Mystical Palm jutsu.

Shinken watched in horror as Michio lost his temper on the VIP. This was exactly was he was afraid was going to happen. Kuno stepped in and force the Kaguya to release the Inuzuka. When the ambassador spoke up the Uchiha thought it was because of what Michio was doing. He couldn’t have been more wrong. His eyes followed the line of the Inuzuka’s index finger to see two gangs approaching. This was bad. His teammate’s yelling must have given away their location. Shinken cursed internally as their Jounin called out for a defensive formation. The Uchiha nodded as he activated his sharingan and jumped between one of the gangs and the Inuzuka.

“Don’t worry. They aren’t getting through.” Shinken said as he turned to face the gang to his left. They brandished their weapons and smiled, obviously looking forward to the bloodshed. Shinken formed a one handed seal and locked eyes with their leader. The man went stiff and let out a scream. Then it was shinken that was smiling. The rest of the gang members looked at each other as their leader collapsed.

“Anyone else?” He asked with a smirk on his face. His response was several throwing daggers launched at the ambassador. The Uchiha made his move in the blink of an eye. He snatched the first dagger out of the air and used it to deflect the rest. As one of the thugs charged at him Shinken locked eyes with him as well. This man too screamed and went stiff before collapsing to the ground. Now the other thugs were beginning to second guess their approach. Shinken picked up one of the throwing daggers he had knocked away and with a weapon in each hand backed up until he was almost touching the VIP. When the shock and awe of seeing their fellow gang members suddenly drop for what seemed like no reason wore off the entirety of the gang charged Shinken. He was barely able to keep them off of the Ambassador. For every strike he blocked there was a follow up. Occasionally he would catch one of the thugs in eye contact and they would suddenly drop to the ground limp. After a few minutes of fighting there were only 4 gang members left. That was when the Anbu finally showed up.

When Shinken turned to see how Michio had fared his stomach flipped in on itself. He felt sick. The Kaguya was now missing his eye, and bleeding profusely. Kuno enlisted Shinken to help him hold Micho down and he did. The screams of pain did nothing to ease the Uchiha’s sickness. Eventually Michio had been healed enough that one of the Anbu was able to take him back to the medical center for proper treatment.

Shinken and the Inuzuka VIP arrived at the Kazekage’s office with little other trouble, and as soon as his charge was safely with the Kage Shinken took off toward the medical center . When he arrived the receptionist directed him to Michio’s room. The Kaguya had a bad habit of getting torn up on missions. That was something that Shinken would have to bring up to him. His temper clouded his judgement and led him to place himself in harm's way unnecessarily.

“You ok? That was pretty gruesome back there.” Shinken asked as he stepped into Michio’s room.

Michio's arms were held down as the ANBU medical unit member began to repair the tearing damage to his left eye socket, having to push her fingers into the empty cavity and pull them apart in order for her chakra to reach through to the damaged tissue and begin sealing the ruptured blood vessels that were expelling Michio's blood at an alarming rate. The mere feeling of someone reaching into his head was enough to make him begin screaming and the sound was stomach churning. The damage was severe to the optic nerve, which didn't function to give Michio sight anyways, and as the eye had not only been penetrated by a steel arrowhead but then also ripped out, the damage to the removed eye would be irreparable. The first things to heal were the blood vessels themselves, stretching and meeting each other before sealing. It was an intense burning feeling, much like the wound was being cauterized. Michio screamed louder, if that was possible, and began to struggle, his body's instincts to remove itself from the source of what was hurting him becoming uncontrollable to the Kaguya. Kuno and Shinken fought hard to keep him from flailing his arms and kept him kneeling so that he couldn't kick at anyone.

Next up for healing was the damaged optic nerve, which slowly sealed itself, pulling from both Michio's chakra and the female ANBU shinobi's chakra to do so. Michio's screams turned into a voiceless exhalation of air as he ran out of oxygen and began to pass out. “Breathe!” Kuno told him, but Michio was too far gone, too far lost in the pain to hear him. His right eye rolled up into his head and the muscles in his left eye socket tried to imitate the action, but there was no eye to roll. He passed out from a lack of oxygen and began to breath normally as soon as his right eye's eyelid closed.

The ANBU kept her hand over Michio's eye for a very long minute after the Genin lost consciousness. Finally, she pulled her hand away and looked to Shinken and then to Kuno. “I will take him to the hospital. You two complete your mission.” And with that, without giving them a say in the matter, she scooped up the Kaguya and stood, struggling to carry him. Due to the bones that laid under his skin, his weight had increased substantially, and it actually took another ANBU member to be able to lift the young man.

Some time later, Michio awoke in the hospital room and sighed. “Again?” he asked aloud, and the nurse overseeing his station perked up.

“Oh! You're awake! Good! We were starting to get worried that you wouldn't wake up!” the nurse told him, and Michio shifted his head to look at his caretaker only to see that it was a male this time.

“We?” he asked, still groggy from the reason for his loss of consciousness.

“Yes, we.” the voice of Shisara spoke up from his blind side and if he wasn't already white skinned from the previous loss of blood, he would've become that way. He turned his head quickly and the world spun. He groaned and held a hand up to his head, shutting his right eye. His stomach churned and all he could do for a moment was not expel what remained of his breakfast all over the floor.

“What happened?” he asked once the nausea had faded, his voice incredibly raspy. No answer came and Michio opened his eye to see that both Shisara and the nurse were purposefully looking away from him. He scowled in confusion and looked from the nurse to Shisara, repeating his question. “What happened to me?”

“You lost a lot of blood, the ANBU had to get you here fast so that we could keep you from going into hypovolemic shock. You'll be fine now.” the nurse told him, barely answering the question.

“Would someone just tell me what happened?!” he exclaimed, feeling his rage beginning to bring itself to the surface again. Shisara grabbed his hand and he looked over at her, seeing that tears were forming at the corners of her eyes. His scowl faded and he looked at her with worry. What could have gone so wrong that she was crying about him being in the hospital?

“During your mission... “ Shisara began, and a single tear fell down her cheek, “You lost control again. You let your anger get the better of you again and while you were protecting the ambassador, you were shot in the eye by one of the assailants with an arrow. The ANBU told us that you were so mad that you ripped the arrow out, along with your own eye.” She began to sob and he squeezed her hand. He had broken his promise to her to be more careful. That was why she was crying for him. His heart sank into his chest as he processed the information that he had caused himself to end up in the hospital. She cried harder and leaned forward as he pulled her to him, wrapping his arms around her. The nurse excused himself and gave them some privacy.

Shisara continued to sob into his chest and all he could do was hold her and whisper to her “It's okay... I'm okay.” repeatedly. He felt like the biggest loser on the planet and even he couldn't help but let a single tear fall down his own cheek.

“You promised.” she choked out, and his nerves jolted, a chill running down his spine. “You promised that you'd be more careful.”

“I know... I... I tried. I did good for my first few missions, but this time was an unfortunate circumstance. I saw who the ambassador was and just lost it. He was an Inuzuka, Shisara...” he told her, and she sat up, wiping her tears away as she tried to collect herself.

“I don't care.” she told him, and he felt numb, hurt, betrayed, and disbelieving all in one instant.

“You don't care? My entire family was murdered by a clan of ravenous monsters who couldn't keep their own pets from feeding on the local animal crops and you don't care?” he whispered, the emotion carrying in his voice as he stared at her with an eye that was now expelling more tears.

“That's not what I mean. I don't care why you broke your promise, Michio. I only care that you broke it. You put yourself in harms way again, let your anger get the better of you, and this time you even hurt yourself badly enough that you could have died.” she said as she frowned at him, her eyes red and puffy from crying. “You're not invincible, and I wasn't there to help you, just like I told you I wouldn't always be.”

They sat in silence for a minute and Michio wiped the tears from his own eye after he slowly sat up. She finally spoke up and he listened intently. “I'm going to give you one more chance to honor your promise, Michio. But I'm not going to lie to you; if you break your promise again... if you break my heart one more time... it's over. I can't be with someone who's determined to get themselves killed.”

Michio stared at her for a moment before nodding. “Shisara, I'm so sorry. I'll do better next time. Thank you for giving me a second chance.” He grabbed her hand and pulled her to him again, this time locking lips with her. She was surprised by his boldness for a moment before giving in and returning the kiss, sharing in his lack of care for their secret. They continued to express their affection for one another for a few minutes before a voice interrupted them.

“You okay? That was some pretty gruesome stuff back there.” Shinken asked him as he stepped into the room, and Michio broke the kiss. He and Shisara flushed and looked to the young Uchiha.

“I'm okay now.” he told his partner and squeezed Shisara's hand again, which she returned in kind. She then nudged Michio and he looked to her, seeing that she flashed her eyes to Shinken and gave him the 'you know what you need to do' look. Michio nodded slowly with a smile and took a deep breath before exhaling slowly.

“Shinken, I'm sorry. I'm sorry I lost my cool back there, sorry if I scared you with this injury, sorry for not being a more reliable teammate in general.” he told his partner, reaching up and touching the white cloth that was pressed into his now empty eye socket. “At least there's this; the eye was already useless.”

Shinken looked at his partner in his sorry state. The man’s anger had nearly gotten him killed today. Instead of using his emotions to steel himself he was letting them overtake him. That made him careless. If there was one thing the young Uchiha could do for the Kaguya it was to give him the tools he needed to control his anger.

“You don’t have to apologize to me. Though I could help you. It wouldn’t be pleasant, but I could teach you to use that anger, instead of letting it consume you. I doubt you’d like me very much at the end of it though.” Shinken said as he looked over to Shisara. Her face was one that pleaded with the young Uchiha to do what he could. His genjutsu skills could be an invaluable tool in helping Michio learn to manage his anger, but it would also involve putting him in situations that could drive a wedge between them.

“You can do that?” Michio asked looking surprised. The Kaguya had struggled with his rage his entire life. He wasn’t so sure that his friend could help him so easily. Still if there was a chance to save his relationship with Shisara, and become a better ninja at the same time he would be a fool not to take it.

“Yes I can, but it’s not going to be easy. I’m going to put you through your own personal hell. I’ll burn you down and you’ll rise from the ashes like a phoenix. Better than before.” Shinken said knowing how his speech must have sounded. He wasn’t sure he himself would have agreed to all of this, but Michio really needed this. The Uchiha supposed you could call it a treatment, but that would be giving it too much credit. Michio looked a little unsure about the direction this was taking and the Uchiha tried to give him his best reassuring smile.

“You don’t have to do this, but it might save your life one day.” Shinken said as he turned to look out the window. He wasn’t just doing this for Michio, though that was the bigger part of it. If he could help reshape his teammate it would be the first step on the road to reshaping the village. It took Michio a few moments but he looked over to Shisara and then back to Shinken before nodding to himself.

“I’ll do it.” He said with a note of finality that the young Uchiha didn’t miss. This was probably going to make or break the Kaguya. Both as a Shinobi and a person. It wasn’t something that Shinken was going to take lightly. He took one last look at Shisara and gave her a gentle nod.

“Well come on then. We’ve got work to do, but I don’t want to do it here. We’ll do it in the training field. I’d hate for you to lose your cool here in the hospital.” The Uchiha said sounding cold and distant. He couldn’t let his personal feelings interfere in something so delicate. The Kaguya felt the distance in Shinken’s words and he couldn’t help but feel a little bit apprehensive. Before he could raise any questions the Uchiha was already out the door and making his way to the training grounds. Michio followed after him, and soon the two had arrived at their destination.

Immediately after they arrived Shinken turned to Michio and activated his Sharingan. The Kaguya didn’t even have time to react as his teammate locked eyes with him and plunged him into a world of darkness. The only thing he would see were two giant red eyes staring him down. Shinken decided he would start small. The darkness reached out and wrapped itself around Michio’s limbs causing him intense burning pain.

“Go on. Get angry. I dare you.” A distorted deeper version of Shinken’s voice growled as the tendrils of Darkness lashed out at the Kaguya. Despite the immense pain the Uchiha was inflicting on his partner it took Michio some time to get riled up. Eventually though the young gennin saw the spark of rage and fanned it into an inferno. When Michio popped his claws and began to tear away at the darkness Shinken knew he had him right where he wanted him.

“Now. Calm yourself. Think of Shisara. Think of me. Think of your goals.” Shinken’s voice said this time sounding like the Uchiha was right next to the Kaguya. When words failed to get through to Michio Shinken tried another tactic. He projected images of Shisara crying onto the veil of darkness. The images were misty and black and white almost like an old noir film. When even that only stayed the Kaguya’s hand for a moment Shinken pulled back on the pain he was inflicting and projected Shisara’s voice into the dark aether.

“Michio...Michio…” Her voice called out as if she were searching for him. It echoed off of the darkness and where it did scenes of all three of them together could be seen playing out in black and white. Shinken too added his voice to the illusion again.

“MIchio come back to us…Remember your promise.” Both voices whispered in unison. The mental strain that this genjutsu was putting on Michio must have been intense, but still Shinken pushed forward. As soon as Michio began to calm down he inflicted the pain again and began to drag him down into a smoking inferno using the darkness as ropes and chains. When he saw that Michio began to lose his cool again he made the illusion of water falling from the sky. When the Kaguya looked up he saw a giant image of his lover crying over head.

“Michio please...You promised!” Shisara cried as her hand reached down staying always just out of his reach. That was when his rage took shape in front of him as a living breathing entity of fire. It reached up and grabbed hold of Shisara’s hand. The kunoichi let out a cry of pain and tried to pull away from the entity. That was when Shinken’s voice broke through the darkness, clear as day.

“This is what your rage will do to her.” He stated coldy as Shisara screamed in horror. She burned away turning to ashe that then coated Michio in a thick gray paste. The darkness receded and Shinken was left standing before his friend who was in a state of emotional turmoil. In that one Moment the Uchiha truly pitied his friend. To have to deal with such a monster inside of you every day must have been agonizing.

“Find your center. Find an anchor. Use it. Control the anger, don’t let it control you. It is a weapon, but a weapon can be turned on it’s user. Always remember that.” Shinken said as he reached out and gently poked two of his fingers into Michio’s chest. The Kaguya would feel his anger now as a flame inside of him, and all of the pain, and injury that the darkness caused was suddenly absent from the illusion. As the darkness began to creep in around Michio Shinken left him with two simple parting words.

“Use it.” He whispered as everything went black. When the Kaguya looked down at his hands they were alight in a blue flame, one that seemed to push the darkness back. As he calmed himself the flames began to go out, and the darkness wrapped itself around his leg. As it did so it was not physical pain that the Kaguya felt but rather sadness and a sense of loss. Scenes of his family and the way they were before the Inuzuka attacked flashed before his eyes. Then came images of Shinken, broken and battered, reaching out for help. This stirred the anger in Michio and the flames got brighter. As they did so the darkness shrunk back and away from the Kaguya.

“Yes. Your anger can be used to steel you against pain and protect you from loss...But it can also consume you…” Shinken said as He saw Michio beginning to lose control of his rage. As this happened the flames turned a bright white and pain flooded the Kaguya’s senses. The light from the flames became blinding, and in the darkness figures emerged. They were Shinken, Sayomi, Shisara and anyone else that Michio cared about. The light pierced holes in them and they all screamed in unison. The sound was deafening and the Kaguya was sure he could feel blood running down the sides of his face.

“Your rage will also consume them. It will eat away at everything you are. Everything you care about, until all that is left is ashes.” Shinken said coldly. Finally the pain and the sense of loss broke the Kaguya and the flames died down. His hands were nothing but charred bones. Slowly the flesh grew back and Shinken appeared in front of him again.

“Remember this lesson well…” He said as he stepped forward. This time he pushed on Michio’s forehead, sending the Kaguya tumbling back into the darkness. When he awoke he was standing in the training field. Shinken smiled and pressed a blade into his hands.

“Congratulations. I think you understand now.” His teammate said as he turned to wave at someone just out of view. Soon Shisara appeared from around the corner of a nearby building. She seemed overjoyed, but that only lasted for a moment as from the shadows there was a blur of motion. Then Shinken screamed. The sound quickly died off into a gurgle as a massive ninja dog stood over him with his throat in its teeth. It seemed to almost smile at Michio. In a panic the Kaguya turned back to Shisara who was standing in the street with a shocked expression on her face. There was a blade through her chest and her shirt was stained red with blood. She opened her mouth to say Michio’s name but the only thing that came out was bubbling frothy blood. The man who stood behind her was an Inuzuka and, much to Michio’s dismay, He reached into her chest and removed her heart. The ninja laughed as he took a bite of it and threw it to the ground.

“It’s about time we finish what we started.” The Inuzuka said with a sick smile on his bloody face. Then as Michio’s rage filled him there was a voice inside of his head.

“Use me...Kill him!” It whispered sinisterly. It took the Kaguya a moment to realize that something had dug into his arm. It was the blade that Shinken had given him. It seemed to glow and hum with power now, and it felt as light as air. There was however the disconcerting fact that there were organic looking tendrils slowly creeping up his arm.

The Kaguya looked down in horror. His distraction proved to be a near fatal mistake as the Inuzuka took advantage of the lapse in focus. His ninja dog leapt at Michio and bit down on his ribs. There was a sick cracking sound and pain flooded through him as he was tossed to the side like a rag doll. Still there was that voice in his head. Whatever it was wanted him to kill the Inuzuka. That was something that he wanted to do anyway, but he didn’t trust this thing on his arm.

“What’s the matter? You lose your nerve? Not that I blame you. If you’re anything like your pathetic friends you’re right to be scared.” The Inuzuka taunted. That sparked a flame of anger in Michio. Suddenly the blade in his hand felt lighter, almost as if it was becoming an extension of his arm. As his mind became clouded by his emotion he felt a sharp pain in his arm. The tendrils coming off of this blade were digging themselves deeper into his arm. Not only that they were creeping up toward his shoulder. That shocked him out of his rage and he began to panic. He popped a blade of bone out of his other wrist and used it to sever his arm. Shinken silently noted this unexpected reaction and suddenly felt very relieved that he had made sure to immobilize Michio with this illusion. Blood poured from the Kaguya’s severed arm and darkness closed in on the edges of his vision. The last thing he saw as he fell to the ground was the image of a laughing Inuzuka.

Michio awoke with a start in his bed. Shisara was laying next to him, and when he went out to the main part of the apartment Shinken was sleeping on the couch. He reached up to touch his eye and realized that it was still there. All of it must have just been a horrible dream. That was when Shinken stirred from his sleep. He let out a Yawn and sat up.

“Morning Michio.” The Uchiha said as he made his way to the kitchen. In reality they were both standing back in the training grounds and having held this genjutsu for so long Shinken was starting to falter. He would have to teach Michio his lesson soon or the entirety of this effort would have been in vain.

There was the sound of a commotion outside of the apartment and both Ninja ran out to see what it was. When they arrived at the window they saw a dog in the courtyard. Something felt too familiar to Michio and he went to check on Shisara. That was when he heard Shinken scream. It was all happening again. When he looked inside of his room he saw Shisara torn to pieces in their own bed. He felt his anger rising and there again was the voice in his head.

“Use me.” It whispered. When he looked down Michio found that he was again holding that strange almost organic blade. It was digging itself into his arm, but as his anger rose he felt it again become like an extension of his arm. From outside he heard the same Inuzuka from before.

“Well this is a disappointment. They said this assignment would be fun. All I see are a bunch of dead losers.” The Inuzuka shouted. The Kaguya felt his anger rising and the tendrils digging deeper into his arm. He didn’t care. He was going to rip this b*****d apart. Not wasting a second and giving in to his rage Michio jumped down to the ground floor. The pain in his arm was agonising as the tendrils made their way deeper into his tissues, searching for his arteries. He ignored it and rushed the Ninja dog blindly. He was able to knock it aside and spear it with the blade, however with its final breaths it took a large chunk out of the Kaguya’s side. Bleeding profusely Michio turned to face the Inuzuka himself now. The tendrils had reached up to his shoulder and as he advanced on his target he felt a burning sensation in his chest. Then he felt his arm go numb and his heart sieze. Shinken’s voice echoed in his head.

“A weapon can be turned on it’s wielder. Your anger can also consume you…” Even as the Uchiha’s words faded from his mind he heard the blade speak again.

“Use me…” It cried before everything went black. Back in the real world Shinken was covered in sweat. He had lost track of how long this genjutsu had been going on. Hours at the very least. The sun was much lower in the sky now, and he had seen a few people approach the training area only to see the two of them performing some kind of exercise and turn away. He had maybe one more shot at this before his chakra would be completely depleted and he would have no choice but to let the therapy be a total failure.

MIchio again woke with a gasp. This time Shisara reached over to comfort him. Michio didn’t wait this time he went Immediately to Shinken. If he could save the Uchiha he could have him protect Shisara while he went after the damned Inuzuka.

“SHINKEN! Get up! There’s an enemy ninja in here!” Michio growled as he roughly kicked his teammate. The Uchiha gave his teammate a very strange look but got to his feet and activated his sharingan anyway.

“What are you talking about? An enemy ninja here? In your apartment?” Shinken questioned rubbing his eyes. Michio let out a sigh that came out more as a growl. He didn’t have time to explain things to his partner. As long as the Uchiha was up and aware of the threat he could handle himself. With that Michio went into the bedroom and got Shisara up. He moved her to the kitchen where there were no windows and the only way to get to her would be through himself and Shinken. It was only when his thoughts drifted to his teammate that he realized he was nowhere to be seen. Before Michio could even form his next thought he heard the Uchiha scream. It was happening again, and there was nothing he could do about it.

In his hand he felt the handle of the blade again. It’s tendrils wrapping around his arm and burrowing into his flesh. The words use me echoed in his mind again and suddenly something clicked in Michio’s mind. The angrier he got the better the blade felt, but the more he let his emotions control him the deeper this thing dug into him. He had to get angry, but stay focused. He thought of the sight of Shisara dead in their bed, of the sound of Shinken’s gurgling scream and the anger came. It was like a fire that was burning through him, and as he stoked it he could feel the blade become a part of him. It was light as a feather and it moved as if there was no air resistance at all. The Kaguya struggled to keep his anger in check, but the painful reminders the tendrils provided when he slipped were enough to keep him on track. Eventually a blood soaked Inuzuka made his way into the apartment.

“Your friend there put up quite the fight. I took his eyes as a souvenir.” The Inuzuka said as he tossed Shinken’s eyes at Michio’s feet. The man had a sick smile on his face. As if he enjoyed causing pain and death. MIchio almost gave into the rage then, but he held himself back.

Back in the real world Shinken cracked a small grin. It was working this time. Michio was learning. If he could just keep his rage under control long enough to kill the Inuzuka, then almost any situation in they might run into in the field would be child’s play.

In the genjutsu the fight between the two ninja didn’t last long. Even with a ninja dog to help him, the Inuzuka was no match for Michio once he had properly harnessed both his fury and the blade that had grafted itself onto his arm. As the Inuzuka took his dying breath the illusion faded away and Michio was standing in front of a sweat soaked and panting Shinken.

“You...You did it. I know that was hell...But you did it. You controlled your rage…” Shinken said as he fell back onto his rear. He was out of chakra now and probably would be for the rest of the day. He only hoped they didn’t get a mission right away, or they would be at a severe disadvantage.

Michio was subjected to seeing Shisara and Shinken's death over and over and over and over again until Shinken finally released him from the genjutsu. Once he was free, Michio fell to his knees and doubled over, holding his head in both hands, feeling the cloth of the wrap around his left eye. His breathing was heavy and he was shaking. The images of Shisara with a sword through her chest and her heart ripped out, Shinken with his throat torn out, Shisara in pieces with her blank eyes staring up at him, and Shinken's blood smeared all over the Inuzuka replayed in his mind repeatedly in quick succession, each of the images ending with the Inuzuka. He grunted and looked up to Shinken, except in his vision it wasn't Shinken who sat on his behind before Michio...it was the Inuzuka. And Michio's attacks had no effect. He growled and rose to his feet, claws extending as he did so.

“You.. you....” he seethed, finally standing, “YOU b*****d!” Michio leaped backwards several feet and his claws extended twice as long as normal just as their Jounin, Kuno, arrived at the training grounds.

“Yo!” he said to them, but Michio didn't hear him. All he heard was the panting of what he saw as the Inuzuka who had killed Shisara and Shinken. He stared ahead with wide, wild eyes that would have anyone mistaking him for crazy, as it was almost if his eye was glowing red from how much anger seeped from it. Michio had indeed succeeded in controlling his anger, but like anyone being forced to relive the deaths of the people they cared about, the Kaguya had snapped. He sprang forward and began dashing at Shinken, blood red eyes locked on what he thought was the Inuzuka. Kuno shouted, but it was wordless noise to Michio as he began closing the gap on his weakened partner, going for a move that was sure to kill him.

He was stopped suddenly when an arm hooked under his jaw and slammed against his chest, forcing Michio's legs out from under him as he was clotheslined and thrown backwards and into the dirt. Michio rolled and looked at his attacker and saw Kuno standing over him with the Tiger hand sign ready.

“K-Kuno-sensei!” Michio said, shocked that his Jounin would aid the Inuzuka, at least he was until he looked again and saw Shinken looking terrified at him. “Shinken? Where'd that damned Inuzuka go?!”

“The Ambassador reached the main office a little over an hour ago, Michio-kun.” Kuno told him, and Michio looked back at Kuno.

“Not that one! The one who killed Shisara... killed Shin.... ken....”
he said, his words becoming quieter as his mind began to heal itself and let him remember that he'd been in a genjutsu. “Oh my god... Shinken, I'm sorry. I lost control again... I almost... Dammit!” He punched the ground and his claws snapped off at the halfway point before sinking into the softened dirt.

“Okay, I was lost a second ago, but I think I've got the gist of what you two were doing. Shinken-kun, you put him under some kind of genjutsu, right? Something that killed his roommate and yourself in front of him? I don't wanna know why. I just hope you've learned your lesson about going that far with someone's mind when you're not looking to kill them afterwards. As for you, Michio-kun, I hope you'll have better control of your anger in the future. And I really need you to put a cork in whatever anger bottle you have for the Inuzuka Clan, as you're likely going to have to deal with them diplomatically in the future.” Kuno held up a hand before Michio could respond. “Yes, I read your file. I know why you hate them and I don't blame you. But the mission has to come first. Otherwise you might as well just leave the village now and forget all about the upcoming Chuunin Exams.”

“Chuunin Exams?”
Michio asked, raising his right eyebrow in question.

“Yes, every year The Five Great Shinobi Nations host the Chuunin Exams in one of the villages that they agree to. Think of it as one of the most difficult missions you'll ever face in your early career as a Shinobi, a test to see if you are ready to take on the more dangerous missions. But as I was saying, you need to put a cork in it before you ruin your chances, because the ambassador was not impressed with how you handled the mission. He submitted his evaluation of the team and you were given a D-. According to the report, you were too impulsive, acted without the care of your teammates or yourself, were unable to put the mission before your personal feelings, and failed to demonstrate any ninjutsu or genjutsu techniques. The only reason you weren't given an outright F was because you technically succeeded in your mission objective. Shinken received the highest marks, scoring a B. He displayed expert use of genjutsu as well as refined reflexes in the way he handled the projectiles, but he also failed to demonstrate any sort of ninjutsu.”

Michio noticed that Kuno hadn't spoken about his own review and retracted his claws, getting to his feet once more. “What about you, Kuno-sensei? What did you score?”

Kuno frowned and sighed, then scratched his head. “Unfortunately, I didn't score much better than you did. As you two had handled the gangs while I was preparing the new jutsu I had just created, I failed to demonstrate any of the classes of jutsu until the very end, which ranked me lower than you in that regard. But, I was able to command the team effectively and technically succeeded in protecting the Ambassador, so I was given a D. The Kazekage almost pulled me from the team, but decided to give me a second chance to bring the team up to snuff. Then I came to find that you guys were doing some extracurricular training of your own. I'm sure it was necessary, whatever it was, but be careful in the future.”

Michio nodded and folded his arms, a smirk on his face. Kuno, his Jounin, hadn't scored much better than he had. While that wasn't a good thing, it did bring the Kaguya some amusement.

“Okay. So we need to get some stuff out of the way.” Kuno told them and looked to Michio. “Michio-kun, as was in your file, you failed to master the most basic of academy techniques outside of the ability to walk on walls. But I'm guessing those weren't advanced enough for you. Is there anything in particular you want to learn?”

Michio thought for a few moments. “What do I want to learn? Well, I could try learning some more ninjutsu, as I didn't study up on much about performing ninjutsu or genjutsu.”

“Sounds fair, but is there anything in particular you want to learn?”
Kuno asked him, but Michio shook his head.

“Not really, just something useful. Maybe something that makes my opponent a sitting duck while I pummel them.”

“Now there's something, but that sounds like something more of a genjutsu than a ninjutsu ability unless you're going to be capable of performing high class Lightning element jutsu, which judging from the elemental affinity listed in your file being Wind-based, that's not likely to happen anytime soon.” Kuno told him.

“But what about that jutsu you were going to use against the bandits? Didn't you use wind to immobilize the enemies?”

“Yes, but you saw how long it took to use that jutsu, as did the Ambassador. It's not ready for combat application. For now, I'll just teach you a genjutsu that shuts down your opponent's body. This won't be easy, but maybe you'll get the hang of it by the end of the night.” Kuno told him.

“Kuno-sensei, before we begin, Shinken and I are feeling drained. Not much can come from our training if we're this weakened and out of chakra. Shouldn't we get some food or something?
” Michio asked, but Kuno shook his head.

“No, but I do have something to keep you guys going.” He told Michio and pulled out a container with small brown pills. He handed one to each of them and put the container away. “These are soldier pills, made up of dried rice, vegetables, and fruits. Just one pill keeps the body going for three days and three nights without any need for sustenance or rest, but at the end of it, you'll be exhausted and in need of at least twelve hours of sleep and a nice hot meal. Not Ramen.” He added that last part because Michio had already begun thinking of all of Shisara's cooking that he could eat. The Kaguya frowned but opened his mouth and popped the pill, swallowing it before the taste could fully envelop his tongue, which was good because the pill was horrendous.

“Blech!”
he exclaimed and shook his head in a disgusted shiver. “That was easily the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted, much less eaten!”

Kuno chuckled and shrugged. “Yeah, they're not tasty, but they'll do the trick. You'll feel the effects any second now.”

Michio nodded as he felt a warmth spread through him as the pill took effect. His muscles relaxed and he began to feel tingly. “Yeah, it's working. Now, how do I perform this Genjutsu?”

Kuno smiled at him and nodded, “Okay, the way you perform this particular one is to focus your chakra into your mouth and make the Bird hand seal. After which, you'll begin to whistle, forcing your chakra into the air leaving your lungs and into the sound. Anyone who isn't deaf and within a few feet, other than the user of the technique of course, will immediately be placed into a paralysis. Keep in mind that because this jutsu affects everyone nearby, you should only use it in situations where you are actually capable of reaching your opponent, as any of your allies will likely be stuck in it's effects unless they can break it and release themselves. It's called 'Saundoato: Sonikku Mahi' or 'Sound Art: Sonic Paralysis'. If done correctly, neither you or anyone else will be able to hear it, but you'll be able to feel your lips tingle and vibrate as the chakra-infused air exits your mouth. That makes the ability dangerous if one's hidden from view, because no one will notice it's even happening until they're already caught.” Michio stared at him with a raised eyebrow and Kuno sighed. “You can whistle, can't you?”

Michio rolled his eyes. “Of course I can whistle. I was more wondering where you learned a sound jutsu from.”

Kuno smiled and shrugged again, “That's my own little secret. Now, do it. Don't worry, I'll be able to break out of it if you succeed, and if Shinken can't resist it, I'll break him out of it too. Go ahead.”

Michio nodded and sat down in the dirt, crossing his legs as he made the Bird hand sign and focused his chakra, as he had done so many times during the academy, this time into his mouth. His cheeks began to expand and he breathed deeply through his nostrils, then began to whistle, combining his wind-based chakra with the air that was leaving his body. But he heard the whistle escape his lips and stopped immediately, exhaling the rest of the chakra and air.

“Dammit!” he grunted. “What did I do wrong, Kuno-sensei?” The Jounin touched a bent index finger knuckle to his lips and thought for a moment.

“Try making it an already high pitched whistle. Keeping your standard whistle volume won't work with the technique. Also, you have to imagine utter silence while you do it and then believe that you're being as quiet as possible. Belief in yourself is one of the key ingredients for performing any non-taijutsu technique. Try again. This time, more high pitched.”

Michio nodded and focused his chakra once more, pouring it into his mouth more intensely. He made the Bird hand seal again and began whistling, this time attempting a higher pitch. He didn't hear anything except the sounds of Kuno and Shinken slumping over. He stopped whistling and grinned. “YEAH! ONE POINT FOR MICHIO!” he exclaimed, but Kuno sat up almost immediately.

“Very good, Michio-kun. You actually did it. Here I thought you'd be hopeless in anything other than punching people.” he said, giving his student a thumbs up. Michio laughed and looked over as Shinken sat up again, looking at him with both a mixture of pride and slight irritation. He guessed that his partner didn't much care for being rendered defenseless. The Kaguya secretly hoped that he'd never have to use that ability with Shinken around, but he took some solace in the idea that his teammate would be capable of breaking out of the jutsu if he ever did need to use it.

Shinken thought he had succeeded in teaching his friend to control his temper but he realized he was sorely mistaken when an enraged Michio mistook him for the Inuzuka in the genjutsu. He couldn’t see any trace of the Kaguya in those rage filled eyes. In a single moment he had flipped from being in control to more out of control than he had ever been. Shinken would have wondered if there was even a shred of hope for Michio if he weren’t terrified and stumbling back for his life. He didn’t have the chakra to stop this attack and the Kaguya was out of his mind. Nothing Shinken could say would bring him out of his enraged state. It was then that the Uchiha saw his Jounin enter the training field. Kuno saw what was going on and after attempting to stop Michio with words moved in to physically stop him.

As Shinken’s teammate was slammed into the ground he gave a nod of thanks to his Jounin who looked at the Uchiha with confusion plastered all over his face. The young gennin wasn’t looking forward to explaining what he had been trying to do. It certainly was a mistake, that he could see now. He had thought that if he could get Michio to wrest control of himself in the worst possible situation that he would be able to do it easily in any other conditions. Perhaps it had at least strengthened the Kaguya’s control over his rage, but Shinken wasn’t going to try that therapy again anytime soon. As Kuno scolded him the young Uchiha simply looked down at the ground. He knew he had done wrong but he had honestly thought it was going to help. The best qualities of a man were often forged in fire.

The young Gennin listened as his squad leader spoke of the Chuunin exams. So that was how ninja advanced to the next rank? It made a lot of sense. Not only would it keep one Village from eclipsing the others in terms of military power, but It gave each Kage, and the other gennin a look at what the other villages were capable of. That was both an advantage, a disadvantage, and a gesture of trust and cooperation. These exams weren’t just about personal advancement, they were also about the advancement of both the reputation of your country as well as your own.

When Kuno went on about how the Ambassador had graded the team he grimaced. The team as a whole had obviously performed in a subpar manner, and as his Jounin spoke Shinken’s fears were realized. The team averaged a near failing rank. He took solace in the fact that he himself had received a B, but was slightly angered by the fact that because he had held back his destructive Ninjutsu for fear of collateral damage he had been docked points. The fact that even their Jounin had scored poorly made Shinken wonder if the Hidden Sand was going to be the joke of the Exams.

Shinken decided to let his Jounin teach his teammate first. The Uchiha was already in good shape for the exams apparently, despite his horrible decision to subject Michio to such intense genjutsu training. Ironically Kuno was apparently going to teach the Kaguya a genjutsu technique. It surprised Shinken that Michio would express interest in that style of jutsu. It was something very out of character for him. Perhaps his session in mental hell had taught him something after all.

It was then that Kuno handed Shinken something he called a soldier pill. The little brown orb was surprisingly heavy for something so small. When he popped it into his mouth it was bitter and had a sourness to it as well. It was certainly not pleasant and the Uchiha couldn’t hold back a grimace as he swallowed it. It wasn’t long before he felt his chakra returning and some of his stamina regenerating. His mouth however felt dry and his tongue tingled. Perhaps he shouldn’t have bitten down on the pill.

The Uchiha listened to Kuno lecture on how the Genjutsu worked. It was sound based, something Shinken had yet to truly master, and he had his doubts that his comrade was capable of learning something that involved such complexity in the art of Genjutsu. To affect someone’s mind without them realizing was certainly a handy trick to have in one’s bag however. He would have to learn the Jutsu himself when time allowed. For now he had his mind set on learning Ninjutsu techniques that weren’t so destructive. Something he could use in close quarters without risking collateral damage.

Shinken watched knowingly as his partner tried and failed to perform the Jutsu. Both he and Kuno didn’t have very high hopes for Michio to master this technique easily. The Uchiha was caught off guard when he suddenly found himself slumping over. The Kaguya had actually succeeded on his second attempt of the technique. That was impressive. Wanting to make Michio feel good about his achievement Shinken waited for a few moments before breaking out of the Genjutsu. While it was irritating to be rendered helpless the young gennin felt a sense of pride for his companion. He was branching out and discovering he was capable of more than just laying a beatdown on someone. Perhaps that would help with his anger issues as well. If he knew he had options other than a physical fight he might give charging in a second thought. Now that Michio had learned something Kuno turned to Shinken.

“Well now I guess it’s time I teach you something. Since you seem to be lacking in Ninjutsu we’ll start there.” The Jounin said as he put his knuckle to his lips as was common when he was thinking. Before he could say anything else Shinken interrupted him.

“I have ninjutsu. I just didn’t use it because I didn’t want to endanger the citizens of the village with a giant fireball.” The Uchiha said flatly. He was still bothered by the fact he had been deducted points for prioritizing the safety of nearby non combatants.

“Fair enough. Still you could use more than just one Ninjutsu technique. I can think of a couple you might be able to use. Why don’t we start with a simple clone Jutsu? First gather your chakra, then Isolate a portion of it. Shape that portion of your chakra into a copy of you. It will be illusory and only really useful in fooling your opponent, but it can be useful if used correctly.” Kuno explained. Shinken nodded and tried to do as his instructor had told him. First he took his chakra and separated a decent sized amount. The Uchiha figured that to make a copy of himself even if it was illusory he would require a large amount of chakra to shape. As he tried to Shape it into a copy of himself his chakra began to behave strangely. It felt hot and began to break apart almost like a flame jumping from one source of fuel to another. Not wanting to fail the jutsu he did his best to shape all of the portions of chakra into copies of himself. When he formed the final hand seal there was a strange sound and Kuno’s eyes went wide.

“You...You made TEN CLONES?...And...They’re blocking light...They’re real...solid clones...What did you do Shinken?!” Kuno cried in utter shock. As The young gennin heard his Jounin’s exclamation he too held a look of shock as did all of the clones. How had he managed to do something so completely different from what he intended? Still ten clones were better than one, and real clones were better than fake illusions. So in the end Shinken considered this mistake a great discovery, and an unexpected victory. But he could feel them draining on his chakra so he stopped sustaining the techniques. All of the clones vanished in puffs of thick noxious black smoke.

“Smoke clones huh? I guess that makes sense with your fire nature chakra. Well That was a surprising turn of events. Remember how you did that Shinken. It will come in handy at the Chunnin exams. I guarantee it.” Kuno stated with a hint of pride in his voice. The young Uchiha heard that note of pride and smiled a little. He knew he still had a long way to go if he was going to be ready for the exams, but he was well on his way.

“Do you have anything else you could teach me Kuno Sensei?” Shinken asked hoping to prep himself even further for the coming exams. To his disappointment the Jounin shook his head. It would appear that he would have to figure out exactly what he wanted to learn, and then train for it. While his taijutsu prowess was average at best the young Uchiha was sure there was some way he could improve his technique. He couldn’t quite place his finger on how yet, but he would find a way.

“The only thing I could tell you is basic advice about fire natured chakra. You can increase its effectiveness by making it more potent. It’s sort of like fanning a fire. It may seem counter intuitive, but if you funnel more concentrated unaligned chakra into your fire nature chakra it will consume it like a fire eating away at it’s fuel. Similarly just as a fire that consumes more fuel more quickly becomes more intense so will your fire nature chakra. This will increase the potency of your fire based chakra, allowing for greater strength in fire based techniques.” Kuno lectured. While Shinken might have found it difficult to conjure up chakra that wasn’t already infused with fire nature, he could still do it. If adding a little bit of difficulty to his techniques could greatly improve their effectiveness that was a trade he would gladly take.

“Thank you for the advice. I will make note of it and experiment with the applications of that concept.” Shinken said as he bowed to his sensei. He was excited to find a use for this new knowledge but that would have to wait. Kuno had a look on his face that said he had something to say.

“Well seeing as how you seemed to have recovered from the incident earlier today Michio I have a mission in mind that was just posted up on the board today. It will be a good chance for us to work on our teamwork. There’s a local antique store one that I believe you two have already visited. Well there’s a rumor going around that someone is looking to steal something from it. We’re going to guard it and make sure that doesn’t happen.” The Jounin explained.

Shinken looked over at Michio and for just a moment thought he might be pushing himself too hard if he undertook this mission. The Uchiha shook off the thought almost immediately. His friend was strong, and this should be an easy mission. Protecting an antique store from some thugs would be easy work, as long as all three of them were there and Michio didn’t lose his temper. Considering that they now had a way to neutralize a group of enemies gathered in the same place the numbers of the local gangs were much less of a threat. Though the fact that they had recently given the store owner access to a scroll hidden in a ninja puzzle box, and there was now a rumor he was going to be robbed seemed suspicious. Given the way that the shopkeeper had shooed them away immediately after they opened the box, and now this mission Shinken had to wonder what exactly was on that scroll. Why was it so important? He did his best to hide his misgivings about the mission as he spoke.

“We can handle it. That shop has absolutely nothing to worry about with squad one on the job.” The Uchiha said confidently. He really was sure that whatever the potential robbers were capable of wouldn’t give their team much trouble. Now that they had a Jounin that was actually capable of working with them their strength had greatly increased.

Michio listened to Kuno's explanation of the jutsu he was teaching Shinken and raised an eyebrow. 'Clones? That basic genjutsu? Alright, well, I'm sure I can do that too. But just in case, I'd better practice.' he thought, and behind Kuno's back he made the Ram hand sign and began focusing his chakra, then isolating it, then expelling it from his body into the shape of a figure that would be an exact copy of him. He was able to do it, but only for a second. It turned and smiled at Michio before exploding into a strong gust of silent wind, pushing the real Michio backwards. The wind helped to blow away the smoke that Shinken's clones had become and Michio frowned. Perhaps Ninjutsu just wasn't his forte. He shrugged and his ears perked up as Kuno began to inform them of the mission.

“There's a local antique store, one that I believe you two have already visited, that is rumored to be the target of an upcoming heist. Our mission is to guard it and keep anyone from stealing anything from it.” Kuno told Team One, pulling a scroll out of his ninja tools pack. He handed it to Shinken, who read it and then handed it to Michio, who scanned it over.

Team One

You have been conscripted to guard the antique store you have already reported to once before. Word is out that in the wake of the fall of the Blood Kings and the Wind Bandits, a new gang calling themselves the Zephyrs has risen from the ashes and our sources have determined that their first 'big score' will be the store.

Mission objectives:
1. Protect the store from theft.
2. No casualties.
3. No damaging the store's merchandise.

Failure of any one objective will result in the mission being considered an overall failure.

Michio rolled up the scroll and looked to Kuno, who was watching him closely. The Kaguya nodded and smirked. “I can tell what you're thinking. You don't have to worry about me killing anyone or breaking anything. Let's just make sure that they don't get into the store.”

“Yeah, we can handle it! That shop doesn't have anything to worry about with our team assigned to this mission!” Shinken said suddenly, and Michio smiled at him. Kuno smiled as well and shrugged once more.

“Shall we get started then?”
he asked, pulling a pair of ear pieces from his pack and tossing them to his two Genin.

Thirty minutes later, Kuno, Shinken, and Michio arrived at the shop owner's door.

“Wait... this store?! I thought they meant the weapons shop!” Michio complained, and Kuno let out an exasperated sigh.

“What part of 'antiques' says weapons to you?” Kuno asked, looking at Michio incredulously. Michio looked over and frowned.

“Hey, don't be like that! There were some pretty old weapons in that store. I should know, I had a couple of them used on me.”

“Yeah? And how'd that pan out?”

“.... They... broke...” the Kaguya grumbled, prompting a nod from Kuno.

“Exactly, and that's why we're not guarding that store. You broke all of the old toys.”

Michio growled and looked at the door again. The last time they'd been here, Shinken and Michio had solved a puzzle for the shopkeeper, who had kicked them out of the store as soon as they opened the box. “I wonder if the scroll is still in there?”

Kuno turned and snapped his fingers. “Hey now, don't think about it. We're here to guard the place from break ins. How do you plan to do that with your face buried in a scroll?”

“I've got ears, Kuno-sensei, and these guys we're trying to stop aren't shinobi. I'll be able to hear them.”

“Sure you will. Over the sound of your own boisterous voice in your own mind.” the Jounin said sarcastically, which made Michio scoff. Before he could reply, the door opened and the weird shopkeeper stepped out.

“Oh! Welcome back boys! And Miyamoto-san! What a surprise! I'm sorry to say that I haven't gotten anything new in stock as far as the stuff you're looking for, but you're welcome to come in and take a look around. Just got another shipment in from the Land of Iron. They say it's the swords of Mifune's squad, who fell to the reanimated Hanzo and Kimimaro back in the Fourth Shinobi War.”

Michio looked from the shopkeeper to Kuno and scowled. 'Who is this guy? First he knows sound jutsu, now he's a regular customer of this antique store? Kuno-sensei's an odd one...' he thought, but was called back to attention by the sound of Kuno's voice.

“Thank you, Musashi-san, but we're not here as customers. You recently put in for a team to guard your store and we were selected.”

“Oh! Splendid! Well then I suppose I'll finish up with closing the store and get on out of here. Remember though, don't break a single thing. There isn't one item in there that you genin could repay me for in your entire lifetime.” the shopkeeper named Misashi told them, causing Michio to scoff once again.

“You don't have to worry about that. They won't even make it through the front door.” he told Misashi with a smirk, then pulled out his pack of smokes and lighting one up. He breathed deeply and then exhaled, the smoke escaping his lips in a whirlwind style vortex. The shopkeeper stared at Michio for a few seconds before looking to Kuno and Shinken and bowing.

“Please make sure your teammate doesn't break anything. He looks like the clumsy sort.”
And with that, he left. Michio rolled his eyes and sighed.

“Alright Kuno-sensei, how do you want to do this? Should we split up and take watch on other positions or should we stick together like we did with the ambassador?” Michio asked Kuno, who shook his head.

“The first one, Michio-kun. You will take the alley over there and stick to the shadows. Ambush anyone who tries to break into the side door. Shinken, you're at the back door. I'll keep an eye on the front. Move out!” he told his genin, and Michio smiled at Shinken before stepping around the side of the building and down the alleyway. He climbed the wall and stood on the overhang, upside down as he continued to smoke his cigarette. He slapped his forehead and put the ear piece in, tapping it twice.

“You guys hear me alright?”

As Shinken was given his ear piece he immediately put it on. It was important to be prepared and ready to go at a moments notice. In the life of a ninja a single moment could mean the differenece between life and death. Or at least that’s what they had taught them at the academy. It took them a lot longer than the Uchiha remembered to get to the antique shop. He had been correct to assume that it was the same one as the puzzle box, however it seemed that the Kaguya had been expecting the weapon shop. Shinken shook his head and gave his comrade a disbelieving look. It had been quite clear which shop Kuno had meant.

Shinken was then forced to listen to Kuno berating his teammate for the damage that occurred on their first mission. To be fair the shop had looked like a wall full of paper bombs had gone off inside. For all shinken knew they might have. It was after all a weapons and ninja tools shop. When Michio brought up the subject of the scroll they had found in the puzzle box Shinken began to wonder again if that was what all of this was about. If he could just get a chance to read that scroll maybe all of this would be made clear. What information could it possibly have that was so valuable? As he continued to ponder he heard Kuno scolding Michio for thinking about reading the scroll. The young Uchiha had to hide a smile, it wasn’t just the Kaguya who wanted to see what that scroll contained.

When the merchant greeted Kuno as if he had known him for a long time Shinken gave his sensei a look of confusion mixed with curiostiy. Why did this shopkeep know their Jounin. From the way that the shop owner spoke Kuno was a regular customer of the store. That was certainly worth investigating later. For now the young gennin would do his job and not ask questions, as much as he wanted to. The merchant went on about how every item in his store was worth more than a gennin would earn in his entire lifetime. Shinken looked down and rolled his eyes as soon as they were out of the merchants line of sight. As if he had anything that valuable in his shop. Such a broad sweeping statement was bound to be inaccurate.

When Michio asked how they wanted to do the mission Shinken found his thoughts again drifting to the scroll. It was the only thing that these thugs could want wasn’t it? There were old artifacts from shinobi days long gone inside, but those things were of no use to a group of thugs. Trying to move them on the black market would only give away that they had stolen them. A scroll was far less unique and could easily be moved. Still he couldn’t help but feel there was something amiss here. If it was the scroll how had the gang found out about it so quickly? Had they been planning this even before Shinken and Michio had opened the puzzle box? That couldn’t be it. The gang had just recently formed, or at least that’s what the information they had said. That just made everything seem more suspicious. If they had just found out, and were already moving they didn’t have a plan. What could motivate a newly formed gang to risk moving in without a plan? Was there some kind of ancient ninja technique on the scroll? Information on a cache of valuable artifacts hidden in a secret location? If they were risking such a reckless move the gang members had to know what they were aiming to take. Shinken was shaken from his racing thoughts by the voice of his Jounin.

“The first one, Michio-kun. You will take the alley over there and stick to the shadows. Ambush anyone who tries to break into the side door. Shinken, you're at the back door. I'll keep an eye on the front. Move out!” Kuno ordered. Shinken was quick to move to the back door. He didn’t want to seem derelict in his duties, but he couldn’t stop wondering why the gang members were moving so suddenly. They had just been disbanded earlier today. Perhaps a better question was how were they moving so fast? Shinken had a sinking feeling these gangs were just being manipulated by someone, and if that was the case there was a much bigger threat here than they thought. Again Shinken was shaken from his thoughts by a familiar voice. This time it was Michio’s

“You guys hear me alright?” Michio asked. For a moment Shinken considered filling him in on his suspicions, but thought better of it. The last thing he needed was Michio going all gung ho before he had everything figured out. If the thugs tried to come in through the back door he would interrogate them in a genjutsu. Hopefully it would provide some kind of relevant information.

The young Uchiha stood at the back door to the dilapidated shop for a few hours, and as the sun went down he began to feel his chest tightening. This whole situation didn’t seem right, and it was putting him on edge. The longer he had to sit and think the worse he felt. The young gennin couldn’t believe he was actually going to say what he was thinking, but the words came out of his mouth anyway.

“I wish they would just hurry up and attack already. All of this waiting is unnerving.” The Uchiha said over the comms. Just as he was about to switch the channel off he heard something scrambling around maybe 15 or 20 feet down a nearby alley. It didn’t take long for the source of the sound to reveal itself. A group of 5 men armed with clubs and kunai walked around the corner and Shinken immediately spoke into his headset.

“I’ve got 5 here!” He shouted as he began forming the hand seals for his clone jutsu. If he was going to interrogate one of them he would first have to reduce their numbers. As the smoke clones formed around him they dispersed, two to each combatant. Suddenly outnumbered the look on the faces of the thugs changed from confidence to one of fear. Shinken smiled darkly, hoping to heighten their fear. It might make them fight harder, but in the end it would help break their spirits, and a man with a broken spirit was easier to question than a stubborn one.

As the clones advanced on their targets the thugs brought their weapons up. Having full control over the clones via a mental link he had them drive the thugs into a group. Herding them back to back like frightened animals. That was when they snapped. They attacked with all of the ferocity of someone fighting for their life. Each time one of them struck out Shinken’s clones took advantage of the opening and struck them with two fingers, causing them to feel incredible amounts of pain as they saw their flesh boil off of their bones. The gang didn’t last long, but they did take out two of the smoke clones in their efforts. The real Shinken had refrained from engaging the enemy, and instead taken to studying the movements of his clones, hoping to find his own weaknesses in them so that he could work on fixing them. He noticed that when he went to counter attack he was leaving himself open, that was how they had taken out his smoke clones. Perhaps he was relying too much on the sharingan, that was something he would have to work on. If he ever fought someone with speed that could rival his own he would be in a lot of trouble. As he thought on this his remaining 8 clones held down the final gang member. Shinken met his eyes and gave him a very stern look.

“You’re going to tell me what I want to know, or things are going to get very painful for you.” The Uchiha growled. His voice was full of a dark sincerity that made the thug gulp hard. Still the man shut his mouth tightly. He was either loyal, or more scared of the person in charge of his gang. Either way, everyone had a breaking point. Shinken activated his sharingan and his eyes blazed a glowing red in the darkness. Again he spoke but this time the man could feel fire running through his veins. His vision blurred and every sound around him sounded like a paper bomb going off right next to his face. The man’s knees gave out and the only thing keeping him up seemed to be the clones. In reality he was still being restrained by the clones, and he was perfectly fine. The sound and pain stopped just for a moment as his vision cleared.

“How did this gang form so fast?” Shinken demanded. The gang member looked up at shinken with defiance in his eyes. Still the Uchiha gave the man several moments to answer. When he didn’t speak The young gennin slapped the man across the face hard enough to jerk his head to the side. The man craned his neck over his shoulder and spat out a mouthful of blood, before looking back to Shinken.

“Well you can’t say I didn’t ask nicely.” The uchiha said with a low growl as he flung the man back into the genjutsu. This time he intensified the burning sensation. As it raced across the man’s body and his vision went dark the young gennin added something new. A murmuring whisper that slowly echoed and grew into a chorus of voices, and then to an overwhelming wave of screaming souls. What the man didn’t realize was that as the red hot pain reached his organs he too began to scream. Shinken left him like that, writhing in pain for two minutes but it must have felt like an eternity to the thug. Eventually the Uchiha slowly brought the man out of the illusion.

“I’ll ask you again. How did this gang form so fast?” Shinken demanded. The man looked at him now not with defiance, but with despair. The young ninja’s face hardened and he grabbed the gang member by the throat.

“Tell me what I want to know, or you’ll suffer that pain for all eternity.” Shinken growled. The man began to shake and tried to break free of the clones to no avail.

“No! I can’t! I don’t know! I swear I don’t know! Enko just showed up, and made an example of someone. I don’t know where she came from!” The man whispered, obviously frightened of what would happen to him if he was heard speaking out against this Enko woman.

“What are you after in there?” The Uchiha said as he tightened his grip on the man’s throat. The thug looked around as if hoping someone would come to rescue him. When no help came he swallowed hard and looked back up to the gennin in front of him.

“There’s a scroll in there...Enko said she wanted it. Said it was valuable. A big score that would solidify our place as a gang. That’s all I know I swear!” The man said his voice getting louder, maybe hoping to draw someone’s attention. No one came to his aid and Shinken shook his head.

“There’s no one coming to help you, but you just saved yourself a lot of pain.” The young ninja said sounding almost grateful. Before the thug could ask for his freedom the Uchiha threw a powerful right hook and knocked him unconscious.

“These five are down. You guys need any help?” He asked over the comms. He was sure that his teammates could handle themselves but if this Enko woman showed up, and wasn’t just some ordinary thug they might have their hands full. Shinken didn’t think she would be here personally if she was just manipulating the gangs though. She certainly wouldn’t be happy that her plans had been foiled. Without knowing what she looked like, or what she was capable of there just wasn’t enough information right now to make a call as to what to do next. Still at least they had a name now.

“I wish they would just hurry up already. All of this waiting is unnerving.” he heard his teammate mutter over the communication device's earpiece and nodded.

“Yeah. They sure are taking a long time to just steal stuff.” he whispered into the mic, but then noticed movement at the end of the alley. Several silhouettes could be seen making a hasty move towards the door he was hanging over.

“Hey, hurry up you guys! You heard what the boss said! In and out before the Suna Police Corp show up.” one of them said as he started attempting to pick the lock.

“What're we after again?”
another of the thugs asked in a deeper voice, and Michio silently judged him as the stupid one of the bunch. The guy picking the lock stopped and stood up straight, pushing a finger into the dumb one's chest.

“We're to snag the scroll, that creepy puppet, and anything else you see that we can use to spread our influence.” the guy said, and went back to picking the lock. Michio smiled and shook his head, then started to count the members. It took him a second due to a severe lack of lighting and only having one eye to count with, but he ended up counting four people who were around the doorway. He thought about relaying the number of people to Shinken and Kuno, but any sound would ruin his element of surprise, so he decided against it. He'd have to take them out first, which meant that if he was overpowered somehow, he'd be on his own. It was a risk, but it was a risk he'd have to take.

'Thirty seconds in and you're already forgetting your promise, huh?' the voice of Shisara rang through his head and he frowned. He then thought of her crying into his chest when he was in the hospital only hours earlier. 'You promised me! You promised you wouldn't take unnecessary risks!'

A tear started to form at the corner of his eye but he shook his head. This didn't qualify as an unnecessary. Maintaining the element of surprise was going to be essential to completing this mission, and speaking into the comm system would only ruin that entirely as it was dead silent with the exception of the clinking of the lock pick. Michio considered his options; he could drop down and take out the guy picking the lock and then take out the knees of the dumb guy. That would leave two to deal with, but in such a tight space he wouldn't have much room to move. That could be dangerous if they got a hold of him. Not that he couldn't deal with it, but a lucky punch could render even him unconscious. That would be disastrous. He could still drop down and throw the idiot into another one, but that would take too much time, leaving him open to the same attack.

“Got it!” the lock picking thief told his comrades, and Michio knew he was out of time. 'Resorting to Plan C.' he thought, and his hands formed the Bird hand sign as he began to focus his chakra into his mouth and breath deeply. His sudden inhale gave away his position however, and the four men looked up at the sound to see only the white face of Kaguya Michio, who began to whistle, pouring chakra into the air that left his lips and watched the effects of his jutsu as three of the four men fell to the dirt, out of the fight. The final one went to draw his weapon, but Michio let the chakra flow to his feet cease and he kicked off of the overhang, launching his body to fall fast onto the only thug still left standing. They collided and went to ground, rolling around for a few seconds before the thug gained the advantage, sitting on top of the Genin.

He reared a fist back and slammed it into Michio's face, then reared back for another swing. Michio took the hit like a champ, though it didn't go without a lasting impact. He was dazed for a second, but was snapped back to being fully coherent when the thug's fist slammed into his jaw, causing Michio to bite his cheek and draw blood. Michio grunted and bucked just as the thug had unsheathed his weapon, a No-Dachi, and the assailant and his weapon flew over Michio's head, but unfortunately as the thug wasn't fully launched, his left knee caught Michio in the chin as he flew forward. Michio grunted again and rolled over, getting to one knee before jumping onto his opponent, who used Michio's momentum against him by rolling and throwing the Kaguya away from him. Michio hit the dirt and rolled twice before using the momentum himself to come to a knee, stopping himself with claws that had shot out of his arms reflexively. He looked down at them and resigned himself to retracting them, but the footfalls of his enemy forced him to look up just in time to bring his claws up in a trio of crosses as the No-Dachi slipped between the claws in a downward stabbing motion. It stopped just short of his right eye, caught on the hilt by his claws, and Michio pushed up and away, throwing his opponent to the dirt as the weapon clattered away into the darkness of the alleyway.

The Kaguya retracted his lethal tools and moved forward slowly, not wanting to expend a lot of energy since he knew the sound-based jutsu would be wearing off soon. He wasn't sure if he'd have the time to reapply the paralysis, so he had to prepare to fight the other three thugs. Numbers weren't on his side, nor was time, but he'd just have to deal with the situation. The thug scrambled to his feet and with a renewed ferocity, he charged Michio and attempted a right hook, but Michio caught the fist with his own right hand and lashed out with his left, catching the thug in the jaw and sending him sprawling into the dirt. When the thug didn't move, he breathed in deeply and let the air out. Then he jerked his head in surprise and pain, crying out as the dead silence was split by Shinken's screaming into the mic.

“I'VE GOT FIVE OF THEM!” his partner screamed into the mic, but all Michio could do was pull the earpiece out and rub his ear. Once it hurt less, he put it back in and hit the transmit button.

“I think everyone in Konoha heard you!”
he hissed into the mic and cried out again as Kuno shouted even louder into the mic.

“ONLY FIVE? I'VE GOT SEVEN!!”

'Dammit! They keep this up and I'll be as deaf as I am blind!' he thought, a scowl on his face as he looked back to the other three thugs... and his expression fell as he noticed them getting back up. 'Dumb one first. He's bound to be the stronger one.'

Michio ran over to them and then fell to the dirt, using his running momentum to fuel the speed of his full body roll as he turned horizontal to them and took their feet out from underneath them, colliding with the wall to stop him. Before the big, dumb one even hit the ground again, Michio leaped to his feet and brought a boot down on the inside of the man's right kneecap, forcing a sickening snapping sound to emit from the now disabled joint. The big guy screamed but was quickly silenced when Michio delivered a running kick to the man's jaw and knocked him out cold. He looked over his right shoulder and saw the other two getting up and leaped backwards, turning as he did so and slamming the toe of his right foot into one of their jaws, sending the thug flying into his comrade, also out cold. The final one was pinned under the weight of his fellow gang member and struggled to free himself, but to no avail.

Michio walked slowly to the immobilized but conscious gangster and crouched in front of him. The man, despite being pinned, still hand a free hand and used it to swing at Michio, who caught it without any effort and pushed it to the ground, then extended a single claw and punctured the thug's hand, pinning it to the dirt. The man screamed but Michio covered his mouth.

“Listen to me now. You're going to jail. And when you get out, you're giving up this life of crime. This village is protected by people stronger and more talented than you or anyone you could ever work for. If you think a life of stealing things from innocent people is going to get you very far here, you're not going to live long. Consider what I'm saying, because if I have to come after you again and you pull anything like what your friends did, I can't promise that an injured hand is all you'll walk away with, do you understand me?” Michio growled at him, attempting to intimidate the thug, who only laughed at him.

“You're gonna be really sorry you screwed up this job, boy. Once our boss gets through with you, you'll be wishing you'd never heard of the Zephyrs!”

Michio scowled and broke the claw off and retracted what was left, then slugged the guy as hard as he could with a snarl, upset that his intimidation hadn't worked.

“Criminals these days... it's like they have no respect for strength these days.” Michio muttered and stood up, then had a idea. He smirked and extended a claw, then leaned in and pressed the claw against the loudmouth's neck. He pressed in until a drop of blood began to streak down and then carved the kanji for Criminal into his neck. Then he moved to the body pinning down the loudmouth and did the same thing, then to the knife wielder, and then finally to the big, dumb guy, adding the kanji for stupid as a prefix.

“Well now that that's done, I should check on the others.” he told himself and pressed the transmit button. “How's it going everyone?”

Shinken responded by asking if anyone needed help but Michio shook his head and told him he had successfully defeated his group, adding in that he hadn't killed anyone, then Kuno replied as well. “All targets elimintated. Let's gather them up and contact the Suna Police force.”

It took a few minutes, but together Shinken, Michio, and Kuno gathered the enemies in one pile near the front door. “Mission accomplished, guys. Good work.” Kuno said, then turned a dial on the comm device's transceiver. “Miyamoto Kuno, Jouin 259. Mission accomplished. Targets awaiting pickup.”

There was some reply from the earpiece and Kuno nodded. “Understood.” he said into the microphone then turned to his Genin. “We're to report to the Kage's office immediately to issue a full report.”

Michio sighed but nodded. “Alright, just let me do something real quick.” He went back to the alley without waiting for approval and opened the side door, then reached around and turned the lock, securing the door that had been successfully picked. He then returned to his team and together they traveled back to the Kage's office, where the Kazekage was waiting for them.

“Ah! Kuno-san! Good to see that you've brought your team back in one piece.” the Kazekage told Michio's Jounin, then motioned to three seats that were prepared. Each of the members of Team One took a seat and the Kazekage stood, turning to look out of the window.

“I received word from the Police office that your mission was successful. This is good news, because I've got something I feel you all need to know, particularly Michio and Shinken.” Jin said, looking over his shoulder at the Genin, “As I'm sure Kuno has told you, the Chuunin Exams are being prepared. It is a chance for our village to show our allies what we're capable of, what our up and coming talent is capable of, and how much of a mistake it would be for them to break our allegiances. The Land of Fire in particular has some talented individuals who may be entering the exams as well. By no means are we to lose to them, do you understand? We have not had a single member from our village actually defeat the other villages in combat for the last twelve exams-”

“But what about Sayomi and Hanako? Didn't they become Chuunin only recently?” Michio interrupted, which earned a glare from Jin.

“Sayomi and Hanako became Chuunin for reasons other than defeating their opponents in combat. And do not interrupt me again.” the Kazekage told him, then looked out the window again. “As I was saying, we have not won a single combat against the other villages. Against my better judgment, I have taken the liberty of enrolling the two of you in the exams in hopes of that changing. Typically, our Chuunin prospectives are only skilled in Ninjutsu and that, I believe, is our downfall. But this year, we will have not one change from that formula, but two. You, Michio, with your Taijutsu specialty, you should be able to outrun anything they throw at you. And you, Shinken, with your Genjutsu prowess, you should be able to overwhelm their senses and make their worst fears come to fruition, turning their own mind and bodies on themselves.”

The Kazekage turned back to the desk and picked up two pieces of paper. “These are your entry forms. All you need to do is sign them and present these forms to the Jounin that's accepting them.” He handed the forms to Michio and Shinken, then sat in his chair. “Now then, I would like some details about the mission. What were they after? Did they say anything about their newly developed organization?”

Kuno cleared his throat and began to explain. “At five o'clock, we arrived at the antique store and met with the owner, who closed up and left the premises. At nine o'clock, the Zephyrs tried to break into the store from all sides. I was stationed out front, Michio in the alley with the side door, and Shinken at the back door. Each of us were able to successfully defeat our foes with minimal damage sustained to us and no damage sustained to the store. From what we could tell, they were after things that could help their gang cement themselves as powerful, including the scroll that Michio and Shinken had freed from a particularly odd puzzle box. A scroll that I'm unsure of the shopkeeper having reported obtaining to you, Lord Kazekage. Whatever is in that scroll could be dangerous, especially if a few two bit thieves know enough about it to want it. Though as for learning anything about the gang, I was unsuccessful.”

“Yeah, I was as well.”
Michio interjected, “The only conscious guy wasn't very forthcoming about anything except for a threat that I would regret the fact that I disrupted their big score.”

Shinken piped up and informed the other three people present of the existence of Enko, the leader of these Zephyr gangsters, and the Kazekage frowned. “That's not any name I've heard before, and I know just about everyone in the village when it comes to shinobi. I want you three to go to your homes and get some rest, because in the morning I'm going to have a new mission for you. Oh, and try to keep your excitement to a minimum regarding the exams. Before you can participate, I expect to see you three completing more missions. Dismissed.”

After he had finished taking out the thugs Shinken regrouped with the other members of his team. It appeared that they were going to be heading back to the Kazekage’s office. That was fine with him. The young gennin needed time to think, and he had to explain to the Kage what they had found. He didn’t want to bother the leader of their village with his suspicions just yet.

As they stepped through the door The Kage made a comment about the team staying in one piece and Shinken had to bite his tongue. He knew that the man had an issue with Michio, but the comment was completely uncalled for. It also insulted their Jounin who, while he may have made a mistake during his last mission, didn’t deserve to be chided. As the Kazekage gestured to the three seats the young Uchiha sat down. It was then that the Kage explained about the Chunnin exams and how he and Michio were to be a display of the hidden sand’s strength. The young gennin felt a sudden weight on his shoulders now. The way the Kage had spoken seemed to indicate there would be a punishment for failing the exams. He didn’t have long to think about it as his Kaguya teammate interrupted the Kage with a question about Sayomi and Hanako. The Kage wasn’t pleased with this interruption but he did address Michio’s questions.

As the Kage explained why Shinken and Michio were a change of pace from the normal Gennin that were sent to the exams the young Uchiha thought on what he might be up against. If the sand hadn’t won in that many exams then it was going to be very difficult to win. He would have to step up his training, and create new techniques. The Sharingan alone wasn’t going to be enough to push him to victory in circumstances like that.

When he was handed his form Shinken bowed his head politely to the Kage. He certainly wasn’t going to turn down an opportunity like this. He was fairly confident that with some serious training he would be able to keep pace, and even defeat the gennin from other villages. He had already surpassed what most gennin in his village were capable of, so it stood to reason that he would at least be on par with those of another village. Of course they wouldn’t be sending just their average gennin. They would be sending their best. Before Shinken could get too deeply lost in his thoughts the Kage spoke again.

When the kage asked about information involving the gang, and the mission shinken decided it would look better if Michio and Kuno sensei spoke first. They needed to redeem themselves after the last mission. When they were finished explaining what they had learned the Uchiha spoke up.

“I had time to interrogate one of the thugs. He said that a woman named Enko formed the Zephyrs, and that it was her idea to go after the scroll. She told them it was something that would cement them as a powerful player in the sand village. But I suspect that was not the real reason she wanted it.” Shinken said. He didn’t have much time to think if he had missed anything before the Kazekage responded.

The young Uchiha also felt very uneasy that even the Kage hadn’t heard of Enko before. It didn’t bode well for things to come. Shinken kind of wished that there had been more of a focus placed on training before the exams started especially now that this was going on. Experience was one thing but ninja also needed the skill to back up their plans. If the mission tomorrow didn’t take all day maybe he would have the chance to get in some training with Michio or Sayomi. As he left the Kage’s office Shinken waved to Kuno and Michio.

“I think I’m going to head home. I just have this feeling that things are going to get really bad. I want to spend some time with my parents before we go on our next mission.” The uchiha said before heading off to his own home. He rarely stayed there anymore so his parents were very excited to see him walk in the door.

“Oh Shinken! Are you staying the night? How have your missions been going?” His mother asked. Her genuine interest in his well being brought a smile to his face. Before he could answer her his father took him into a bear hug.

“It’s good to see you son. Have you eaten? I know it’s late so our dinner is cold, but there was some leftover stew. You look like you’ve had a long day. Why don’t I heat it up for you.” His father said not even waiting for an answer before going to work. His mother pulled him over to the table and sat him down. The young gennin had to hold in a chuckle. Even though he would risk his life on a daily basis, his parents still viewed him as their little boy. If he was being honest with himself it was a nice change of pace to be pampered like this. The ninja life had been hard, and he hadn’t really had time to just sit down and rest.

When the stew was ready Shinken ate it happily. He wondered if he should tell his parents about the details of his missions, but he decided that given how they were going, and how badly Michio had been hurt twice now, that it would only worry them. So instead he gave them a vague overview of how he was doing, and that he had been selected for the Chunnin exams. His parents had mixed emotions about their son progressing so quickly, but they did congratulate him. No matter what they were proud of what Shinken had accomplished. After eating Shinken felt himself growing tired and he gave his parents a smile.

“It’s been a pretty long day. I’m going to turn in for the night.” He said as he got up from the table and placed his dish in the basin they used to wash their eating utensils. His parents looked a little bit sad, but nodded in understanding.

“Alright son. Your bed is all made up. Just make sure you get a good night’s sleep alright?” His father said sounding a little bit concerned. Shinken gave him a smile to assuage his fears. His father smiled back and went to cleaning the bowl that had housed Shinken’s meal. With that the ninja turned in for the night. His sleep was deep, and if he did dream he didn’t remember them.

“I think I'm going to head home. I just have this feeling that things are going to get really bad. I want to spend some time with my parents before we go on our next mission.” Shinken told Michio as they left the Kazekage's office and the Kaguya nodded.

“Yeah, I think that's a good idea. We'll meet up again tomorrow. Good night.” Michio told his partner and waved farewell to Kuno as well. In order to avoid any confrontation, he kept to the rooftops all of the way home, making a dive for the upper floor walkway and landing just shy. He clattered against the railing and grabbed onto the top rail as he recoiled back. He grunted and pulled himself up and over the railing, then walked down to his apartment where he could smell food being prepared.

'Shisara's cooking again? Why this late at night?' he wondered, opening the door slowly. He saw Shisara in the kitchen but she apparently hadn't heard the door open because she didn't even perk her ears up. A mischievous grin grew across his face and he closed the door quietly, then began to creep behind her. She was moving around slowly, focusing on grilling up the meat that was in the pan and keeping the rice from frothing over, so it wasn't until he was two feet away that she noticed his shadow on the wall. She cried out and swung around, a hot grease coated spatula in her hand, and Michio was struck on his left cheek. He shouted out in pain and backed away as Shisara cried out again after seeing who she'd struck.

“MICHIO! WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?! YOU SCARED ME!” she shouted and set the spatula on the counter, then rushed over to him. Michio was wiping the grease away with a gloved hand and she pulled his hand away to reveal a blistering cheek. “You idiot! See what you made me do?!” She held up a hand to his cheek and it glowed a bright green as she healed the grease burn. He hissed and gripped the counter so hard that if he squeezed any harder, it would have broken in his hands. Once she was done, the blisters were gone, but a spatula shaped red-mark was still left on his face. She pulled her hand back and then placed her hands on her hips. “You know better than to sneak up on me like that, Michio-kun. I could have hurt you way more if that weren't a spatula in my hand. Don't do that!”

Michio let go of the counter and wrapped his hands around her waist and pulled her close, resting his forehead on her's. “Good to see you too, Shisara-chan.” He kissed her and she returned it for a few seconds, but the sound of bubbling water pulled her attention away from him and she broke the kiss. She pulled away from him and ran back to the stove, swearing and turning a dial as the rice pot boiled over and sprayed water all over the counter. Michio smiled apologetically when she looked back and scowled at him, and it wasn't long before she was smiling back too.

“Dammit, I can't stay mad at you. Why do you have such a nice smile?” she asked, cleaning up the spilled water with a towel and running it under cold water to counteract the heat.

“What can I say? Some of us are just born pretty.” he teased, shrugging as he said it. She laughed sarcastically and turned off the stove completely, turning to look at him.

“If you're the example of people who are born pretty, we've got a long way to go before humans are perfect.” she jabbed, and Michio laughed then held his chest.

“Why must you wound me so, Shisara-chan?!” he asked in mock despair and she rolled her eyes, setting up a couple of plates and setting them on the table.

“If you were so easy to hurt, I'd be going with you on every mission.” she told him, motioning for him to have a seat. Michio chuckled and sat down, getting ready to dig in. “So, I hear you're gonna participate in the upcoming Chuunin Exams.” Michio was just about to pop a cubed piece of pork into his mouth but stopped short. 'Oh here we go...' he thought, and set the food back on the plate.

“How'd you hear about that?” he asked, and she smiled.

“Honey, I work in a Ramen Bar. I hear things. Do you really think an intoxicated Jounin is gonna keep his mouth shut regarding something like that?”

Michio smirked and nodded. “Fair point. Yeah, the Kazekage thinks I'll have a better shot at winning if there's a combat test.”

Shisara frowned but continued eating, but Michio didn't miss it. “I'll be fine, Shisara-chan. Shinken's going to be there too, and you know how much he tries to keep me out of trouble. Nothing bad's going to happen to me.”

Shisara sighed and nodded, smiling sadly at him. “I know, I know. I can't help but worry though. In the last Chuunin Exams, three Suna-nin came back in wooden boxes, and four more came back missing limbs. The one before that, we lost two teams to the Leaf Village's Forest of Death. Their bodies were never found. And those were teams of three people. You and Shinken are only two.”

Michio had finished half of his steak and most of his rice in the time it took for her to say that and he washed it down with a tall glass of water. “I know you're worried, but I'll be fine. Luck's not on my side, but I more than make up for that in skill and being a tough son of a gun. Besides, I have a driving motivation to come back alive.” He stared at her and she smiled, beginning to blush.

“You're stupid.” was all she could say and he chuckled.

“Well, I won't argue with you on that one.” he told her, and she snorted into her rice. He began to laugh as she wiped her mouth with a napkin.

After finishing dinner, the two of them cleaned up, with Michio washing the dishes since Shisara had gone through the trouble of cooking them a late night meal. They retired to their room, where they changed into their night clothes and laid down for bed. Shisara cuddled into his neck and stroked his chest after he had turned off the light.

“Michio-kun...” she said, and he grunted lightly in response. “You know I love you, right?” Michio's eyes opened and he looked down at her as she stared up at him. It was the first time either of them had said anything like that, but Michio wasn't some bashful child. He smiled and kissed her forehead.

“Yeah I know. But you know something? I love you more.” he responded, and she smacked his chest gently.

“Do not.”

“Do too.”

“Do NOT!”

“DO TOO!”

“PROVE IT!” she said, sitting up a little bit, and Michio grinned mischievously again. Her eyes widened as he did just that. For over an hour, he proved how much more he loved her and once they were done, they collapsed onto the bed exhausted, cuddling together as they fell asleep.

'Michio-san. Find the scroll. Seek me out. I'll be waiting for you.' a voice said into his mind as two bright yellow eyes stared at him from the darkness, and Michio woke with a start. He looked around the room and noticed it was now morning.

“What the hell?” he asked quietly and noticed that Shisara was still laying on him, her head resting on his chest. He smiled and slipped out of bed, getting dressed and leaving Shisara there in order to cook breakfast for the two of them. She came out a few minutes later, fully dressed and laughed as soon as she saw him. “You're cooking breakfast huh? It looks like you haven't burned anything yet so... yay!

Michio laughed loudly and scooped the scrambled eggs onto two plates, then the bacon, and then finally the toast he'd cooked in a pan since they didn't have a toaster. Together, the two of them ate and talked about the day's plans. Shisara had to work and Michio had to see what new missions the Kazekage wanted him to complete today. They finished eating and he went to get dressed, then kissed Shisara goodbye.

Michio emerged from his apartment and lit up a cigarette, then headed down the upstairs walkway and down the stairs towards the street. He pulled out the comm unit from the previous night that Kuno had forgotten to collect from Shinken and Michio and pressed the transmit button. “Shinken, Kuno, if either of you can hear this, I'm going to head to the Mission Office. See you two there.”

A response came from Kuno, who sounded groggy. “Michio-kun? Oh man... I forgot to take those back... Alright, I'll meet you there in an hour.”

Michio chuckled and took a deep drag off of his cigarette and began heading to the Kazekage's Office building, reaching it in under fifteen minutes. He looked around and didn't see Shinken or Kuno, so he had a seat outside and began to think about the voice he'd heard before he'd woken up.

'What the hell was that? What could be in the scroll that would help me find that voice? And how does it know about me? This doesn't make any sense...' Michio thought, contemplating this as he waited for Shinken and Kuno. After a few minutes, he got impatient and put his cigarette out and walked into the main office.

“Kaguya Michio, reporting in for a mission.” he told the Chuunin behind the desk, who smiled and reached into a drawer underneath the desk.

“I assume Kuno-san and your other Genin partner will be here shortly, otherwise I'd make you wait. This mission is straight from the Kazekage.” the Chuunin told him, and Michio accepted the paper that was handed to him.

“Thank you. I'll be sure to complete it to it's fullest.”
he said, and began to read it.

Team One

In light of recent events, I have decided that the scroll you protected last night would be safer here in this office. Your mission is simple. Go to the antique store and retrieve the scroll, then deliver it to this office unharmed. Be mindful of the fact that this Enko woman has had all night to recruit more Zephyrs. It is likely that they might try to take it from you. If you allow this to happen, you will not only fail the mission, but there will be more severe consequences. Bring that scroll.

I have included an order of release on the back of this form. If the shopkeeper gives you any trouble, show this to him. That should be enough for him to turn over the artifact to yourself.

Michio nodded as he read it and smiled. 'This is my last chance to read that scroll and figure out what was talking to me in my dream.' he thought, and then looked over as both Shinken and Kuno entered the office. He held up the paper and grinned. “New mission, guys.”

When Shinken woke up it was early in the morning. The sun was just coming up over the horizon. He could hear his parents snoring in the other room, and smiled. This time he was going to pamper them. He got up out of his bed as quietly as his ninja training would allow. As he snuck into the kitchen his brain began to run over the possible things he could cook for breakfast. He thought he remembered there being some pork in the fridge, and he thought he would make Some pork buns. Knowing that the merchants would just be opening up their stalls he ran out to the market and purchased two kinds of cooking oil, a cabbage, some green onions and a little bit of ginger. At another stall he picked up some flour and a little bit of yeast. The merchants were surprised at how early he was out, but they didn’t complain as he gave them all generous tips for the inconvenience.

When he got home he began to prepare the dough. First he added some yeast to the bottom of a bowl and then poured some water that he heated with fire chakra. He proceeded mix the water to dissolve the yeast into the liquid until he could no longer see it. Then he added the flour and using a set of chopsticks slowly stirred the mixture until it became thick and began to stick together. When it had reached the desired consistency he removed it from the bowl and placed it on the counter so that he could begin to knead the dough. After the first ten minutes of kneading the dough his hands began to ache but he continued. It was a labor of love. He only hoped his parents would stay asleep long enough for him to finish cooking their breakfast. It took him another ten minutes to finish kneading the dough to the desired smooth consistency. He then placed it back in it’s bowl to rest, and moved on to preparing the rest of the ingredients.

The young gennin washed the cabbage and then searched the kitchen until he found the thick metal cleaver that he wanted to use to chop up the ingredients. He grabbed hold of it and quickly began to prepare the vegetable by chopping it up into fine slices. He then placed it into a bowl and poured salt over it. Shinken tossed the vegetable for a few seconds to make sure the salt was intermixed completely and then let it sit for about 5 minutes.

Next he moved onto the pork, which thankfully was already ground. He put it in another bowl and began to slowly add water to it. Each time he would pour a little bit more water into the mixture before stirring it with a set of chopsticks until he was satisfied that the water had been assimilated into the ground pork. He then began to mix it continuously in one direction until he was satisfied with the texture, and then he added soy sauce from the fridge. He mixed that in again making sure to only mix it in one direction. Then he set the bowl aside and grabbed the cleaver he had used to chop the cabbage.

Grabbing the green onions and ginger from his bag he washed them both off. The green onions were set on the cutting board and chopped into small pieces before Shinken moved on to the ginger. He peeled the ginger, before chopping it finely. Satisfied that the ingredients were properly prepared he added them to the meat, and again mixing in the same direction incorporated them into the mixture.

Now that the cabbage had been sitting for some time he pulled it out of the bowl and squeezed the excess water from it. He placed the cabbage back on the cutting board and chopped it up until it had reached a level of fineness that he deemed acceptable, before adding it into the meat mixture. He stirred the mixture again to incorporate the new ingredients before adding the cooking oils that he had purchased. The young Uchiha continued to stir until everything was properly mixed.

Now that his dough had risen shinken sprinkled some flour out on the countertop and pulled the dough from its bowl. He cut it into several large pieces and then one by one began to work them. He kneaded them and rolled them into 4 logs, which he then cut into smaller pieces. After he had separated the dough into small sections he rolled them out into small thick pastries, before taking each one and rolling them out into larger thinner pancake shaped pastries.

Now finally it was time to add the filling. Shinken took his chopsticks and shoveled filling into each pastry one at a time. He was careful not to add too much filling to any one pastry, knowing that if he did they would overflow. Then when he was happy with what he had made he slowly and carefully began to close each pastry by pinching the edges of the dough together until the pastry was completely sealed.

By now Shinken had made quite the mess of the kitchen and he still needed to let the Pork buns rest for almost another half an hour. Knowing that he was going to wake up his parents, he began to clean the kitchen. When he was about half way through washing the dishes his father came out with a yawn and saw what Shinken was doing.

“Son...What are you doing? Are you making...Pork buns…?” The tall older man asked sounding both puzzled and intrigued. Pork buns were one of his father’s favorite dishes but they were so much trouble to make that he rarely got to have them. This was only the second time Shinken had ever made them so he hoped he was doing it right. It didn’t take long for his mother to stroll out into the kitchen after she heard the words Pork Buns.

“Shinken you better not have...Oh.” His mother said when she saw the Pork buns already sitting on the table top, and Shinken doing the dishes. She was always very finicky about her kitchen. It always had to be neat and orderly, or she would tear into whoever left a mess.

“I was hoping to surprise you two with a home cooked breakfast, but I guess doing the dishes was just too much noise. Those need to sit for another 30 minutes and then I’ll steam them up for you.” The young Uchiha said. Knowing his mother’s attitude before she had her morning tea the young gennin began to boil a pot of water by channeling his fire based chakra into it. The process was much quicker than conventional methods.

Shinken took the black metal teapot that always sat beside the stove and placed the tea leaves into the filter, before pouring the boiling water into the pot. It took several minutes but the leaves inside unfurled and were soon tightly packed into the strainer. His mother looked at him and smiled. He knew she really appreciated all of this and that made all of the effort worthwhile.

He and his parents shared a nice cup of tea while they waited for the pork buns to set, and finally when they were ready Shinken placed parchment paper under each dumpling and steamed them for sixteen minutes, before letting them rest again for another five. Finally after all of the effort and waiting the pork buns were ready. He let his parents each take what they wanted as he went back into his room to fetch the earpiece from the night before. He was planning on heading out right after breakfast.

When the Uchiha got to his room he heard a muffled sound coming from the comm device and he placed it in his ear just in time to hear Kuno Sensei say that they were supposed to be at the Kage’s office in an hour. That gave him just enough time to have a good meal with his parents and then travel to the office at a leisurely pace. When he got back to the kitchen his father already had a mouthful of pork dumpling and the Uchiha’s mother slapped the man on the arm.

“Ryu! You couldn’t even wait until our son was here to start eating?!” His mother scolded. His father said something Shinken couldn’t understand through all of the food in his mouth and shrugged. The young ninja couldn’t help but laugh at the absurd sight of his father with mouth stuffed full of food trying to talk down his mother.

“Mom it’s ok. I made them for both of you, not for me.” Shinken said. His mother looked at him and smiled softly before taking two pork buns and handing one to the young Uchiha.

“Here. Eat, you look like all you’ve been eating is Ramen….and thank you.” His mother said. She wasn’t exactly wrong. He had been eating more ramen than he had ever eaten in his life this past month. He certainly didn’t mind though. Shisara’s cooking was pretty tasty, and there was that one time that Sayomi made him spicy ramen. He couldn’t hold back a smile as he thought of how she had tried so hard to eat the spicy food. He had to give her an A for effort.

“Thanks mom. I’m supposed to go see the Kage soon. Something about another mission. I know I haven’t been home a lot lately, and I’m sorry. I wanted to do this for you because I haven’t been around as much as I should be. I just have to keep my teammate out of trouble, he’s kinda clumsy.” Shinken said bending the truth a bit, so as not to worry his parents. His father shook his head and Shinken could have sworn he saw a hint of recognition in his father’s face, but the man didn’t say anything. His mother however did speak up.

“Well you two had better be careful out there. A ninja’s life is a dangerous one you know.” She said. Boy did Shinken know how true that statement was. He had seen his teammate almost get himself killed a few times now, and he had gotten into a few bad spots himself. There was always the risk that he was going to come home in a box, and that must have been weighing heavily on his parents. He would just have to become the strongest Ninja in the sand village, then they wouldn’t have to worry so much. With the Exams coming up Shinken could only hope his parents didn’t find out how truly dangerous they were.

“I know mom. I promise I’ll be careful, and I’ll make you and dad proud.” Shinken said before he took a bite of his Pork bun. He had done surprisingly well. The meat buns were delicious, and perfectly cooked. For a moment Shinken wondered if he had missed his calling as a ninja chef. As the family ate their breakfast the Young Uchiha lost track of time and soon almost 45 minutes had passed. He was just about to take the last pork bun when his father spoke up.

“Shinken aren’t you supposed to be going to the Kazekage’s office?” His father said hoping to distract his son long enough to grab the last bun. Shinken’s eyes went wide as he realized how much time had gone by. He grabbed the Pork bun and turned to run out the door.

“Thanks dad! Love you guys, I gotta go BYE!” He shouted as he took off running out the door. He knew the village well enough that he figured he could shave some of the almost half hour travel time between his house and the Kage’s office off by taking a few short cuts. He ran down the streets almost bowling people over. It was only thanks to his ninja agility and reflexes that he was able to step around them. And jump over them. The streets were unusually crowded today, and it was slowing him down. At this rate he was going to be late for the meeting.

Knowing that time was limited, and not wanting to anger the Kage, or keep his teammates waiting Shinken decided he would take to the rooftops. He jumped from the middle of the street up onto the wall of a nearby building and used his upward momentum to get a running start up the wall. The young ninja pushed chakra into the bottom of his feet to help him stick to the wall, and within moments he was on the roof. From there it was a clear shot to the Kage’s office, though he did have to run up the side of some of the taller buildings in his way. Eventually after jumping from rooftop to rooftop he made it to his destination. When he arrived he saw Kuno approaching. He waved down his teacher and the two of them entered the Kage’s office at the same time, though Shinken had a mouthful of pork bun. When Michio mentioned that they had a new mission he tried to speak but it was muffled by the food in his mouth so instead he just nodded.

He wondered what the new mission could possibly be. It couldn’t have been that important if the Kage had left it to this morning to do, but at the same time it had to have been potentially dangerous if he said they needed their rest. The Kage wasn’t the sort of man to put things off. He always thought that if you stopped a problem before it started then you saved yourself heaps of pain and effort. Shinken thought that on this particular issue he was correct. If one could n** an issue in the bud then they they should always take that chance, rather than risk collateral damage, but the more he thought about it the more he might be considered an issue to some of the villagers, perhaps things weren’t as black and white as he thought.

As he chewed his Pork bun, and relished what was probably going to be the last food he had until the end of the day with how things had been going lately, Shinken took the scroll from Michio and read it. They were supposed to retrieve the scroll from the old man. That would give Shinken a chance to see what it contained and maybe figure out a clue in the puzzle that was Enko. Though he would have to find a way to read it without Kuno Sensei finding out. Regardless he would feel better if the thugs of the Zephyr gang were kept far away from the scroll. As he swallowed the last of his pork bun the young Uchiha gave his teammates a smile.

“Well then… What are we waiting for? Let’s go finish this mission.” The gennin said with more energy than he usually had. He was excited to get to see what was in that scroll. Maybe it was some kind of secret jutsu he could learn to guarantee his success at the Chunnin exams.

Shinken and Kuno had finally arrived, the Uchiha having his mouth stuffed with what looked to be a pork bun, and Michio's mouth watered. He had already eaten breakfast, but that was a couple of hours ago and with the elapsing of time, Michio found himself hungry again at the sight of the food. He swallowed and waved to his comrades, a little upset that they were so late, but then again Michio had gotten an early start. Today was the day that he learned what was in the scroll and to say he was eager was a severe understatement.

Shinken approached him and took the mission information and his eyes lit up just as Michio's had, and the Kaguya knew that he had the same idea. Michio grinned and nodded, but then Kuno came to them and looked over the mission. “You know, Michio-kun, you really should have waited for the rest of us to show up before accepting a mission.” Kuno scolded lightly, but folded up the form and placed it in his ninja pouch.

“Well then… What are we waiting for? Let’s go finish this mission.” Shinken said enthusiastically, and Michio couldn't help but nod with a large grin on his face. Kuno took notice of their sudden glee at the mission at hand but said nothing, merely motioning for the door. The two Genin hurried out of the door and the three of them began to travel to the antiques shop. Along the way, Kuno stopped off at a food vendor to get some breakfast and Michio thought it would be the perfect time to talk to Shinken about how to get the scroll opened long enough that they could read it.

“Hey, Shinken. This mission clearly could have some of the Zephyrs coming after us. We should use that to try and get away from Kuno and read some of the scroll. It shouldn't take too long, as it's not a very big scroll. We'll just use clones and hope that Kuno doesn't notice.” he told Shinken in a whisper, who looked at him as if that plan was sketchy, but nodded slowly.

“Or I could read it and tell you what it says.” Shinken suggested, and Michio nodded as he snapped his fingers. Shinken's Sharingan would allow him to not only remember what he read almost perfectly, but it would also make it so that he could just copy the information onto another scroll.

“That's a fantastic idea. Okay, you do it, but we'll still need some kind of a distraction. Maybe use your smoke clones to obscure yourself and get away for a few seconds, but leave a clone behind to act as though it was the real you. Also, you should take the scroll when we pick it up.” Michio told his partner, and was going to say more, but Kuno had received his order and had come back to the two Genin.

“What are you two talking about so quietly, so far away?” the Jounin asked them and Michio nodded at a particularly gorgeous woman just down the street.

“I was trying to get Shinken to stop being so anti-social and get himself a beautiful girlfriend. I thought that she might do the trick. What do you think, Kuno-sensei?” Michio replied, and Kuno looked to see her. The Jounin chuckled and turned back to the two of them, an amused expression on his face.

“I think she'd make a fine girlfriend, if that wasn't your ex-classmate Sayomi's younger sister.” Kuno told Michio, and Michio's jaw dropped. “You didn't recognize her? I would've thought you of all people would know Miyako when you see her, Michio.”

Michio flushed but shortly after he grinned, nudging Shinken. “Hey, if it doesn't work out between you and Sayomi, you could always go after her younger sister.” This caused Shinken to look over at Michio with mild irritation.

“We're just friends, Michio. How many times do I have to tell you?”

“Sure you are. And the Kazekage and I are drinking buddies.”

“Michio...”

“Alright guys, that's enough wasting time. Let's get a move on and get this scroll. Then you can talk about hooking up with girls. Speaking of which, I've got a matchmaker friend. Set me up with my wife, she did. I can introduce you two to her if you're interested.” Kuno interrupted them, getting them to start walking again.

“N-no thank you Kuno-sensei. I think we've got it handled.” Michio told him, a little shocked that Kuno was so well connected with the non-shinobi members of the village.

“If you insist. Now, pick up the pace. I've got something planned in a few hours and it wouldn't do to be late.”

'You mean like how you kept me waiting for a couple of hours?' Michio thought, but didn't say it. He focused only on reaching the antiques shop in a quick amount of time.

The three members of Team One passed by several vendors and houses on their way to the store, ranging from food vendors to toy vendors to the weapon shop that Michio had accidentally destroyed to the abandoned kiosk that the merchant who had been selling the fake headbands had been using. Michio smiled at first, but then frowned when he remembered that the Kazekage had not sent them on a mission to give the headbands back. He wondered if the headbands still sat in the Kazekage's office and hoped that when the time came for the play to take place, the Kazekage would not go back on his word and let the kids use them for the play.

“Man, it's only been a few days, but we've really gone all over the village, haven't we Shinken?” Michio asked his teammate and Shinken nodded. Michio looked over at their Jounin and saw that he was just now eating the last piece of meat on his kebab, and Michio's stomach began to grumble. He frowned again and looked around, finally spotting one of the last food vendors on this street. He detoured towards it and bought a small tray of sushi, five in total, each of the rolls carrying a separate fish. Michio popped the Unagi roll into his mouth first and beamed. It was so delicious and it had been a while since Shisara had prepared sushi for them. In all honesty, he missed sushi and he was certain that Shisara did as well. Perhaps he'd take her out before he left for the exams.

'Oh man, the Chuunin Exams! I can't wait until we get to go and show how much stronger our village is!
' Michio thought, and turned to look at Kuno as he finished swallowing the sushi roll. “So Kuno-sensei, what goes on during the Chuunin Exams? Like, what kind of tests do you have to do to pass?”

“It's different every year, but overall they test your ability to retrieve information, survive extreme situations while completing a mission, and then your combat capabilities. My exam in particular took me to Demon country, where the participants were expected to help keep the Ghost army from reawakening while also taking seals from the other teams. It was.. messy. Of the thirteen teams that went in, only four emerged, my team included. The Ghost Army was successfully prevented from breaking the seals that already existed, but so many more ghosts were born that day.”

“Ghosts? How is that possible?” Michio asked, and Kuno held up a finger.

“When a person dies, their chakra is said to reconnect with the element that their most aligned with. But in some situations, the chakra is too powerful to simply fade and manifests itself into an ethereal being capable of fighting with all of the techniques that the person had learned in their life. This is especially true in Land of Demons. The amount of concentrated spiritual energy in the environment acts as a fuel of sorts for the deceased to retain their chakra's structure. That's why we cremate our dead and perform burial ceremonies. Otherwise, every country would be overflowing with the chakra spirits of the dead and we'd be fighting both with and against the spirits of those lost to battle.”

Michio took a mental note of this, but a smile grew across his face. “Kuno-sensei, there's no campfire, but it sounds like you're telling quite a ghost story.”

Kuno rolled his eyes at the lame joke and then shook his head. “I know, it's a little hard to believe, but once you've seen one of these ghosts, been attacked by one of these ghosts, it'll make a believer out of you yet.”

Michio scoffed and looked straight ahead, stopping suddenly as his eye fell on a familiar but unfriendly sight. Hanako was standing in front of them and she had also stopped dead at the sight of Michio and Shinken. A scowl grew on her face and she opened her mouth to speak, but a hand clasped on her shoulder. The man who had come to their rescue over a month ago was standing behind her. He looked to Michio and smiled politely.

“Michio-kun! Good to see you. How are you these days?” the elder Hyuuga asked him and Michio shrugged.

“Could be better. Could be worse. Yourself?” he replied, and the Hyuuga's smile widened.

“I'm doing well. Hanako just completed her psychological treatment and physical therapy sessions, so we're out celebrating. I'm glad to see that you were reinstated as a shinobi. And you, Shinken-kun! Good to see you as well!”

Michio looked over and saw that Shinken's Sharingan had activated and he nudged his partner, who looked at him with surprised. Michio pointed to his own eye and then made the 'cut it out' hand gesture and Shinken's eyes widened as he let the Sharingan fade to his natural eye color. Michio held up a thumbs up and turned back to the Hyuugas as Shinken gave his reply to the elder.

Hanako decided to ignore them and looked at Kuno, crossing her arms in front of her. “So Kuno-san, you're in charge of these bumbling idiots now, huh?” Michio's jaw clenched but he said nothing. Her words stirred up the still existing desire to get revenge on their clan for blinding him in his left eye, but thanks to Shinken's mental training, he was able to keep it under control.

Kuno smirked and shrugged, “Once you get to know them, they're not so bumbling. It just takes a skilled leader is all.” It was now Hanako's turn to clench her jaw, as Kuno had just given her a backhanded statement, insulting her lack of experience and skill at reigning in unruly Genin. She opened her mouth to respond, but Michio cleared his throat.

“Hyuuga-sama, I thank you for what you did for us and I don't mean to be rude, but we're currently on a mission and time is of the essence.” He said, bowing politely and walking around them. The Kaguya knew that if he lingered any longer and remained in conversation, there would be a confrontation between at least Michio and Hanako, and judging from the last time they had fought, Michio would not come out on top in either the combat or in the long term ramifications. It might have even been grounds for his permanent dismissal as a shinobi of the Village Hidden in the Sand, and that was something he couldn't have. Not yet.

Michio was pleased to see that Kuno and Shinken followed suit and that Hanako had not decided to antagonize Shinken or himself. It was not long before they reached the antique's shop. Michio arrived at the door first, but Kuno spoke to him through the comm device to wait and Michio remembered that he still had the device wedged into his ear. Michio obediently waited for Kuno and Shinken to regroup with him, only having to wait thirty seconds or so. Kuno motioned for Michio to step to the side and the Kaguya Genin did just that, then the Jounin opened the door. Together, Team One entered the store to see that the interior had been rearranged. Particularly, the puppet that had been hanging on the wall was now sitting on the floor behind the counter and the opened puzzle box sat inside a glass display cabinet. A bell sounded off when Kuno had opened the door, alerting the shop keeper to their presence. He emerged from the back room and a smile spread across his face.

“Ah! Gentlemen! So good to see you! I'm happy to say that your mission was a success! Not a single thing was missing from the shop! The only thing I needed to fix was the side door's lock, as it appears that the tumblers had been damaged from someone successfully picking the lock with a rather crude set of lock picks. Who was keeping an eye on the side door? No, never mind. I don't want to know. I'm just glad that you were able to stop those awful gangsters. Now, what can I do for you today?” the shop keeper said in a long winded greeting and Kuno smiled.

“Well, I'm here to check on that last shipment.” the Jounin told the shop keep and stepped to the counter, but was met with a frown.

“I'm sorry Kuno, but the delivery isn't for a couple hours. I'll be sure to send for you when it comes in though. In the meantime, can I interest you in this odd Kunai knife? I'm not sure where it comes from, but the design seems like something that's right up your alley.”

The shop keeper reached under the counter and opened the back of the glass cabinet, then pulled the kunai he was referencing out and placed it on the counter top. It was indeed odd, as it had three different points on the blade and a piece of scroll paper wrapped around the handle. Michio silently wondered what it was that the shop keeper had gotten his hands on and silently decided that he would see about purchasing the kunai knife in the future if Kuno didn't buy it here and now.

“I appreciate the thought, but no, I'm here on other business as well, unfortunately.” He replied, reaching into his ninja pouch and pulling out the notice of confiscation. Michio moved swiftly and caught Kuno's wrist, causing the Jounin to look at his Kaguya Genin. Michio smiled and removed his hand.

“Kuno-sensei, it would mean a lot to me if you would allow me to carry out this part of the mission.” Michio told him, posing a request for Michio to take the scroll from the merchant. Kuno stared at him for a few seconds, but eventually nodded.

“I'm putting a lot of trust in you, Michio. Do not disappoint me, because this is against my better judgment.”

Michio nodded and took the form from his Jounin then turned to the shop keeper. “In light of recent events, the Kazekage has ordered us to retrieve the scroll that you obtained from the puzzle box.”

The shop keeper's expression fell and he looked from Michio to Kuno, his eyes searching for a hint that it was some cruel joke, but Kuno just stared at the owner with a straight face. The shop keeper's eyes turned to pleading. “Kuno-san, please. This is the most important thing I've ever come to find. If you take it away now, I'll never find anything important ever again!”

Kuno shook his head, but Michio couldn't help himself. “Why? What's in the scroll?”

Under normal circumstances, the shop keeper might have not told them, but in his desperation to keep the scroll, he let the cat out of the bag.

“The scroll is the key to finding the Two Tailed Beast Matabi. It details how to find the creature as well as it's last known location, and tells of the tactics to taking it down and sealing it into a shinobi to create a Jinchuriki, such as-” he began, but Kuno cleared his throat and interrupted the explanation.

“These are not things that Genin need to hear. Turn over the scroll now or we will have no choice but to take it by force. Please don't make us do that.”

The shop keeper's fallen expression turned to one of anger as he stormed from the front desk. He went into the back room again and then returned with the scroll in his hands. “Here I thought you were one of the good ones, Kuno, but no. You're all just like the rest of the ninja in this village; a bunch of thieves with authority.”

Michio was disturbed by this accusation, but maintained his composure despite his feelings on the matter and took the scroll from the shop keeper. Without another word, he left the shop and his comrades inside it, then tucked the scroll in his vest. He pulled the pack of cigarettes out of his vest and noticed he only had five left. The Kaguya made a mental note to pick up a pack on the way home and lit one up, calming his shaken nerves.
