I don't know. Warin and I may have had our own quarrels with Merlin, I suppose, but he had nothing to do with this place.
The sad truth about a lot of things, it seemed.
But you're looking for a way out. This is an ordinary door, as far as I know: though it seems a bit unlikely to me that there's anything in here you could use to get out, if there is it's in one of the cells.

"I guess it's back to what we were doing before we struck up a conversation with the dead." Nemesis did not want to get close to dead bodies again, but it seemed to be the only option. They had checked all the noose cells, which really had done them no good. "Let's check out the cell with the axe symbol." Was a small part of her hoping there was a literal axe in the cell? Yes, yes there was. "Do you want to keep chatting with the dead while I check out the other cells?" She wasn't even sure if the keys would work to all the cells, but it was certainly worth a shot.
The dead lady was suggesting it to them, and right now her advice was the best they were going to get. She was going to ignore Charonite's earlier warning about not trusting anyone or anything in here.

"No," he said. "I'm going to look too. Come with me."
The General-King read the message over a few times. At least the voice on the other side seemed patient and disinclined to dramatics; Charonite had treated Elaine with curt politeness and patience in turn, when his frustration was obvious for Nemesis to see. Maybe the warning about trusting nothing and nobody didn't extend to those who were already dead, or maybe he just had a thing for doors. The stone he kept in his hand. Now he walked back into the corridor to look at the engravings again, staring at every marking.

The markings were as before, and the doors were as before: strong, but rusty. It would be difficult to break them loose, but not impossible. By the estimation of an experienced fighter like Charonite, it would most likely take both of their strength to break into a cell -- and they wouldn't have much strength for anything else trying for a time.
So it was imperative, perhaps, to decide which cell to focus their efforts on.

Rather obediently, she followed Charonite back down the line of cells again, absently fingering the keys in her hand. "...I so do not want to walk into another one with a dead body. Please." Nemesis' tolerance for dead things was clearly not as great as Charonite's. Of course, the man had to be used to death by now. What Nemesis saw through the first few months of being a senshi was nothing compared to what Charonite must be used to.
She was waiting for him to decide what to do. It wasn't usually what she preferred to do, but he had a better understanding of what was going on. Nemesis certainly wouldn't have thought of writing on the door as quickly as Charonite.

"You're squeamish. Keep looking," said Charonite to Nemesis. He was already walking back to the door and the dead woman and was scratching there:
pillow book axe What do they mean? Axe = murderer
He sincerely doubted there would be an actual, literal axe behind the 'axe' door, or he would have had at it long before they'd ever started talking to Elaine. Nemesis had hit on that idea as well. It was too puerile; it wasn't the case.

"Whatever you say," she replied with a soft, but lengthy sigh. She watched the man head back to the door, and she continued down her path along the row of cells. Drawing her finger over the symbol, Nemesis realized even more that she had no idea what to do. They couldn't get into the cells, and whatever useful objects they may be hiding in them.
"And, well, yeah, just a little squeamish." She made a gesture at him that he could likely hardly see, making a small space between her pointer finger and thumb to emphasize her point. "I'm sorry that I have no intention to become acquainted with dead people."

Said Elaine: Very well.
She took a moment to compose her thoughts on the matter, or recall, apparently -- a dead human mind worked no more quickly than a live one, apparently. Nevertheless, it appeared to be considerably more patient. There wasn't much to complain about there.
Noose: traitor. Crimes against the King. Scroll: embezzler. Crimes of money, banking. Purse: thief. Burglary, pickpocketing, robbery. Book: libeler/slanderer. Falsehoods and defamation. Pillow: adulterer/adulteress. Axe: murderer.

He did not ask Nemesis her opinion of the rooms yet, instead scribbling:
did you know the man in the falsehoods cell?

Responded Elaine: Certainly. I knew Gervasius. He was a printer, I suppose, who published broadsheets against the King -- all he ever said to us was that he spoke the truth and the only reason he wasn't in the cell of a traitor was that it looked unseemly to convict so many traitors. Not much more to say -- I suppose you stand a chance of talking to him if you reached his cell, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort. He was garrulous.

"Are you done chatting up your new girlfriend, yet?" Nemesis called out from where she stood, in front of the cell with a purse symbol. Her impatience was beginning to shine through, and she passed over to the next cell as if she had not even considered the one she had just been looking at. All she could tell was that there was hardly a way to bust into them. "How are we even going to get into these?" She tapped her fingers against one of the cell doors, about ready to give up on her part of the investigation. Nemesis retreated back towards Charonite, knowing that whatever they could learn was likely from the door.
"Got anything else out of her... besides her number?"

If looks could kill, the General-King's might have withered some of Sailor Nemesis' limbs. He looked over his shoulder at the girl approaching, though she blithely did not give a damn about his expression or the limb-withering. "We're going to ram the door at the weakest point," he said. "And if I could swap you for her right now? I would."
Which did not help any accusations that he was doorsexual. But he was already writing:
which prisoner should we talk to

She seemed only mildly concerned with the look Charonite sent over his shoulder to her. Nemesis was secretly feeling rather accomplished to have managed to get such a response from him. "Wait... we're ramming the door?" She outstretched her arms, displaying that she was not the strongest looking girl on the planet. She was better than those goddamn twigs that called themselves teenage girls, but compared to Charonite she was rather... weak. "This is going to be fun."
A little smirk crept upon her face, "and of course you would." The tone of her voice blatantly indicated why she thought Charonite would switch her off for the lovely possessed door.
"Which door?" she pressed on, impatient as ever for a solution.

"Wait." Charonite made the brief, violent hand movement of stop in Nemesis' direction as with his other hand he scrawled:
who was in the Murderer cell?
