TRIVIA:

A Soulbonding is a ceremony performed by two magicians, usually lovers. Once carried out, a powerful mental and spiritual link is created between them, often described as if a part of their minds "belongs" to the other. This connection is constantly feeding information from one to the other. However, it is not as powerful as other similar forms of mental connectors, such as external Calling rings (as these artefacts act as powerful catalysts), and the effectiveness of Soulbonding greatly depends on close proximity. At a distance, the Souldbonded can simply sense their partner's "presence" and any particularly strong emotions, or, of course, their death. (After death, it is said that a Soulbonded person never feels "whole" again, as if the part of their mind "belonging" to their partner has been wiped away.) At close range, however, the connection is intensely powerful. Partners can hear each others thoughts, communicate telepathically and, if they desire, exploit the connection to go "searching" through their mind and memories.

Cressa, however, performed the ceremony without Jessie's knowledge shortly before she left a couple of years back. It requires a deep state of meditation, and so she performed it while he was in Reverie. As the connection only goes one way - from him to her - she cannot travel into his mind and poke around. He, however, if he knew about it, could go the other way and poke around in her mind. (Think of it like a two-way highway!) As we saw in the most recent Interlude, she suddenly finds the constant feed of his thoughts and feelings lacking, as it seems he's been cleverly concealing some important details...

This is often how she seems to know everything about everything, because if she isn't relying on her own knowledge and reading skills, she's relying on his. Hurray for ultimate privacy invasion? 8D; And yes, all things considered, you really WOULD think she'd be better at not upsetting him...

"Augh!"

"" Jessie cried, catching Luathrae's arm as her foot slipped from the crumbling, steep face of rock. She heaved a deep, grateful sigh, steadying her balance and getting back to her feet on top of the scabby, grey hill of rock.

"Uugh... " she complained, prompting Jessie to offer her a further helping hand.

""

"" she called forward to Cressa, who was several meters further up the treacherous slope. Somehow, she managed to scale the rocks with the ease of a mountain goat, looking as impressive as a true mountaineer as she went, bare legs exposed like a dark reflection of Marilyn Monroe in the cold wind.

She stopped and brushed her hair out of her eyes as she looked back down, and suddenly Corie was clinging to her arm, flapping and cawing in the wind. ""

She was away like a black kite, up into the air and out of sight. Cressa waited, and reached out to help Luathrae, holding her by her other arm as they drew near and ascended the crest of the ridge. After that first night on the outskirts of the mountain, things had changed in their little trio. Cressa hadn't just been behaving herself. She'd been friendly, she'd been kind. She and Jessie were back on good terms. She and Luathrae had reached an understanding.

Therefore, the cause of tension in the group had been eliminated, and everyone seemed happier as a result.

"" Jessie remarked, shielding his eye from the sun as he looked off across the bleak landscape, ""

"" Cressa replied, grinning, ""

Jessie looked at her incredulously. ""

""

"" he laughed. It was good to hear him laughing again. Both of the women smiled at him as they began the perilous descent over the other side of the cliff, Jessie and Cressa holding fast to the weaker member of the group.

"" Luathrae puffed, both of her arms locked firmly in tight, supportive grips. She might as well have been nailed to a crucifix for how far she could move them.

""

"" Cressa gasped, ""

The two friends exhanged looks over Luathrae's head - hers teasing, his comically long-suffering. ""

"" she happily agreed. He laughed and shook his head, and Luathrae had to giggle as well.

"" she chuckled, which is about as much as anyone could say to her.

""

Corie, a growing black speck in the sky, suddenly dive-bombed back onto Cressa's shoulder. "" she croaked. Once she was settled, she thought it best to add ""

"" Cressa replied drily. ""

"" Jessie groaned, ""

It was too late. "Voi che sapete che cosa e amor donne vedete s'io l'ho nel cor!"

Belting her heart out, Cressa dropped Luathrae like a sack of rotten potatoes and yanked Jessie into a fervent dance number the second they reached the bottom of the cliff. He was more than happy to part from her once the number finished and she took her bows to an invisible audience off the edge of another perilous drop some six feet away from them. Luathrae applauded them from her seat on a nearby rock.

"Bravo! Encore!" she cried, sending Cressa into yet more reels of appreciative theatrical bows.

"" Jessie laughed, folding his arms and leaning back against the cliff face as Cressa milked the hell out of her performance. ""

"" Cressa demanded, surging forward and pulling him back out onto the 'stage.' ""

"" he replied, playing along with her. Luathrae clapped even harder, whooping and hollering for the two of them.

"Bravissima! Encore! Bravo!"

"" Corie complained, causing Cressa to 'accidentally' throw back her arm with such force that the bird, who'd managed to stay put throughout the dance and bows, was immediately thrown off.

"" Cressa encouraged, as they all began to head back off, a rather bent-out-of-shape Corie hopping along behind them for once.

"" he replied, ""

"" Luathrae interjected, ""

"" Cressa grinned, ""

As if she didn't know what he'd been thinking about already.

"" he said, ""

""

He sighed. "try to teach them properly... I just didn't care. I neglected my duty.>"

A long silence passed, during which time Jessie seemed to wilt. ""

"" cried Corie, the most unlikely source of comfort in the world at that moment, ""

"" he said sternly. All the same, he raised his arm and brushed a hint of moisture from his eye. "man
I can be, for Coline's sake. No more of this stupidity. It's time I really took charge of my own destiny.>"

TRIVIA:

If the drow sound awkward of stilted when speaking in translation it's because the translation is difficult to make. You may also notice strange jumps in the conversation, for example where Jessie suddenly brings in suicide out of apparently nowhere. This usually occurs because the elves are picking up on inferences in their own language which don't exist or are impossible to translate into ours.

~~~~~~~~~
The elves travelled onwards across the slopes, following Cressa's infallible read on the energy trails of the world. Everything around them was desolate and bleak, no plant life or wildlife to be found on the barren, rocky landscape. Then, as they ascended the final cliff, an unpleasant feeling sent shivers down Jessie's spine. He smacked at his ear, and his fingers came away wet, the sensitive pads tingling with a small but unmistakeable bite of cold.
He turned his face to the bleak sky, and was rewarded with a splot of white parachuting onto the bullseye of his nose. It melted immediately on the drow's hot flesh, as Jessie jerked his head and cried out with more ferocity than if he'd been smacked in the face.
"" he seethed, swiping the puddle of residue off his face, "snow. Yaaa...>"
"" Cressa teased, wrapping her arm around his shoulder while he eyed the falling flakes around them with more hatred than if they were prowling nether beasts. ""
"" he complained, ""
"" Cressa gasped theatrically, ""
"" Luathrae smiled at the pair, ""
Jessie reluctantly relaxed into Cressa's hug. Once again, Luathrae's experiences seemed to put things into context. "" he relented, ""
"" Cressa said quietly. She hugged him more tightly. ""
"" he scoffed, "" he corrected, ""
"" Luathrae moaned, ""
Cressa and Jessie ascended the slope behind her, and Cressa's face broke into a knowing smile. ""
Tucked away in the side of another mountain to their right, through the mists of distance, the drow - or Cressa at least - could make out the first evidence of human influence they'd seen since beginning their trek across the mountains. An ancient, crumbling stone staircase led up into a wide, dark maw which was the entrance to... well, it could only be some form of dungeon, built into the mountain itself.
""
"" Corie replied, ""
~~~~~~~~~

"" Jessie puzzled, as they finished descending the staircase on the other side of the entrance. It had led them down into the depths of the mountain and into a truly cavernously gigantic foyer of sorts. "here...?>"

The huge, high-ceilinged hall, reminiscent of a church or a cathedral, had obviously seen better days. It was ancient, many hundreds if not thousands of years old, built with unpleasant grey stone and crawling with cobwebs, arachnids and insects. Some of the bricks had disintegrated into nothing, leaving crumbling walls with damp, bare rock behind them. No earth. Nothing grew on these mountains. It was dank, damp and infested. Why in the world would the Overseer be here...?

Not that any of this bothered the drow. Or at least, not Cressa and Jessie, who had spent a good third of their lives underground.

Jessie turned his head as Luathrae suddenly brushed up against him. She was looking around, on edge, and shuffling closer to the other two.

"" she whispered, ""

The other two looked at her incredulously.

Corie, of course, had to get a sarcastic reply in. "" she muttered, "or act like one. That's an imposter if ever I knew one.>"

"" she squealed, ""

"" Jessie remarked. Cressa, ever unorthodox, bent to her knees and scooped up a particularly large lady who'd been disturbed by their passage.

She held the long-legged spider out in her palm, and though the creature immediately went frantic and scuttled in rapid spirals down the length of her arm, she nonchalantly picked it back up between her finger and thumb and held it out towards Luathrae. ""

All the same, Luathrae's face blanched, and she shuffled closer to Jessie. She made no reply, but willed the man to leap to her rescue, which of course he did.

"" he said, gently taking the spider off her. Then, with a slightly disgusted glance, he threw the thing over his shoulder and out of sight. Luathrae squealed and clung to him, glancing around the way humans do when they think an army of enraged arachnids might suddenly descend on them for their transgression. Cressa, however, pouted.

"" she sighed. For a moment, it sounded as if she would add more, and then simply waved her hand and shook her head. ""

"" she said, closing her eyes. Barely a moment later, she looked up again, expression crossed with concern. ""

"" Jessie asked, voice lilting with surprise. It was very rare that Cressa simply blanked out on the tracking front. It was what had made this mission seem so easy, if long-winded, so far.

"" she replied, frowning, ""

"" Jessie observed, indicating the passages to their left and right. He moved towards the next raise of steps, which led up to a raised area landmarked by a stone dias of sorts, trailing Luathrae like a clinging vine. He glanced at her momentarily as if hoping she might let go, but whereas he might have chastised Cressa he passed no comment over her. Instead, he turned back to his friend, unwilling to pull her all the way up the expanse of steps. ""

She agreed, and trotted up the steps. Her footsteps didn't seem to echo as much as they should have, as if the strange, creepy atmosphere was absorbing the sound. Up on the pillars either side, two ugly, leering gargoyles gazed down upon her progress as if ready to pounce.

They were, however, thankfully immobile, and she completed her ascent without hassle from otherwordly creatures. "" she called, approaching the sundial-like dias with interest, ""

She swept her hand over the top of it as if testing a hot stove, and then peered closer, blowing dust off the ancient surface in one firm expulsion of breath.

A pic that never was and never will be finished of Cressa dressed as Coatlicue, the Aztec "Mother Goddess" who also symbolises death and destruction - i.e, the beginning and end of life. She is the overwhelming force of destruction, the reminder that what the earth creates it can take away in an instant of terrifying, raw, unflinching power. I loved the description: "Most Aztec artistic representations of this goddess emphasize her deadly side, because Earth, as well as loving mother, is the insatiable monster that consumes everything that lives. She represents the devouring mother, in whom both the womb and the grave exist."

However, Cressa just looks like she's having a lot of fun here, all deep meanings aside. :3

~~~~~~~~~
"" he called up to her, ""
"" she was murmuring, brushing her fingertips along the carved stone.
""
"" she huffed, straightening back up. ""
"" he said, with an air of finality.
"EEEEEK!" his hanger-on shrieked, practically jumping a foot into the air and landing on top of him, ""
""
" GET IT OUT, GET IT OUT!!"
"" Jessie cried as she danced around, pulling him this way and that, ""
"AUUUUGH! GET IT OUT, GET IT OUT, GET IT OUT!"
In a frenzy, Luathrae began pulling at Jessie's trousers - the pair she was wearing, not the ones he was wearing - and feverishly trying to get them off. Shellshocked, he held her tightly by both shoulders to save her from a nasty bump as she eased to the ground for a better position to heave them off. Even here, however, they wouldn't move, the material, which had been strained and low-riding enough as it was around her behind, bunched tight around the tops of her thighs. Immovable. Jessie looked down on her helplessly, bending over at her side as he grasped for the proper course of action.
Eventually, he pulled out one of his knives and dropped down to his knees. ""
"NO! NO! NO!" she screeched, in even more of a frenzy at the sight of the weapon.
"I won't hurt you! Hold still and I can cut off the material! Which leg?!"
Cressa watched the ensuing comedy with a cross between a raised eyebrow and a mischievious smile. She folded her arms, then unfolded them, eyes on the dias.
She didn't bend to examine it again. Instead, she reached out and placed a hand on the sundial-like protrusion on the top of the circular panel. She gave it a little, experimental pull... and it moved. It moved! She yanked it a little harder - it budged only few inches at first, but then it was spinning around as if on ball bearings. Unnaturally so. It spun even when she released it, performing five full three hundred and sixty degree revolutions of its own accord.
Then, abruptly, it stopped, locking into place with the air of a key being turned in a lock.
"NO, NO, NO, I CAN DO IT MYSELF!" Luathrae cried, shifting away from Jessie along the ground.
"Just tell me which leg and I can get it off for you!"
Like the key to the gates of hell, it all broke loose.
The ceiling suddenly cracked, the damage bleeding across the entire breadth of the hallway, and then the rock face split open, or perhaps simply vanished, revealing a vast, golden stained glass window in its place. Much like the enchanted windows in the Practise Hall, they shone with unnatural golden light. Everywhere the beams touched, the debris of years was stripped away like a curtain being pulled to the side. The insects vanished. Bricks reappeared back in their usual places. The hall was suddenly reverted to the gleaming, golden, beautiful place it once had been all of those years ago.
"" said Cressa, gazing around at the transformed cathedral. Impressive.
Still - a little Spring Cleaning? Something of an anticlimax.
Her eyes turned back slowly to the mystical dias. "Hmm..."
She gave it a tap, and it swivelled in one quick, sharp movement a quarter turn clockwise.
For the briefest of moments, the light spilling into the hall flashed a brilliant, blinding red. There was a crack, as if of a whip, but actually it was the sound of snapping stone. Cressa was suddenly knocked from her feet, bowled onto her back by the force of a hellhound - the disfigured guardians of the pillars, restored to their former golden forms but no less hulking, imposing and ugly, had sprung to life. The first powerful creature had had the perfect vantage point, and, like a bird of prey swooping on its prey, it had Cressa trapped underneath it as it snarled and gnashed.
"CRESSA!" Jessie yelled, leaping to his feet, but his cry was matched - no, exceeded by the roar from his sorceress friend. The first beast was thrown backwards by the same kind of massive force she'd used to break the secure metal door. It flew back through the air, and stone connected with stone as its vast hide hit the wall and bounced back off with the force.
The creature now sported a crack along its backside, proving it to remain simple stone given life, but no longer was it crumbling and decrepit thanks to the first enchantments, and it fell back on its feet like a feline rather than a hound. Then there was its mate to deal with, who, having leapt from its podium just afterwards, was now dancing forward ready to go in for the kill before she could stand.
Elves are not made to take beatings. Cressa, if she wasn't badly injured already, couldn't take another stone beast leaping onto her with bone-crushing force.
Make a decision, Jessie...
a. Attack the first beast.
b. Attack the second beast.
c. Hang back and protect Luathrae. Trust that Cressa can look after herself.
As we know, elven ears are slightly better for general use than human ears. They can pick up smaller vibrations more easily, allowing them to hear things more clearly at a greater distance. But did you know their true advantage is that they are able to pick up different frequencies? And not just regular sound frequencies, either. Elven ears are antennae for magical vibrations. This is why elves are often the first to notice when something magical is going on nearby (e.g at the resurrection of Fel), as not all humans are naturally capable of picking up on these energies. It is also why, when they first made contact with humans, they quickly became associated with wizardry and sorcery, and of course still are to this day.
Aw jeeze, now I have the urge to make Jessie say "My ear senses are tingling."
There are disadvantages, though. Certain tones of sound can be annoying, or even utterly unbearable, to their sensitive ears. The range of sounds that grate upon them include brass instruments, kazoos, party horns, bagpipes (and other instruments which utilise a drone), didgeridoos, the dreaded vuvuzela, and other kinds of similar instruments.
~~~~~~~~~

The creatures may not have been intelligent, but they were demonstrating simple coordination. One hung back, the other struck.

On a single target, of course. A second one would even things out. The other beast was already leaping forwards - no amount of agility was going to get Jessie up those steps and onto it before it hit her. Instead, he headed for the first, waiting for its turn poised by the wall. Cressa sent the other beast hurling backwards just like the first, hindered slightly by its huge forward momentum, but it still fell hard onto its back. Jessie jumped up onto the first one's arched spine, stuck the point of his sword in the wide crack and wrenched.

The beast had been halfway through making its first bound back towards Cressa, but at the feel of something breaking apart its back it whirled around in one leap like a bucking bronco. Jessie held on fast to his sword and gracefully kept his balance. The stone had shifted only so far before stopping, so he pulled out a second dagger and jammed it into another leverage point. The stone gave a little further, so he pulled it out and drove it in again, chiselling away at its hold. Meanwhile, he caught the occassional glimpse of Cressa as his own beast bucked and spun. To his relief, she was on her feet, apparently unhurt, laying into the beast with bolt after bolt of concentrated force. Unlike the large waves she'd used to knock the beasts off of her, these bolts were like bullets, and each blast knocked another limb or sizeable chunk of meat off the stone creature. It was lying on its side with one of its front and one of its back legs missing, struggling to move, but it was still going, ferociously trying to reach Cressa, gnashing its jaws and straining its neck while she removed piece after piece of its body. Its eyes shone with an eerie red light as she decimated it bit by bit.

Finally, half of the beast's back fell away cleanly. Jessie immediately plunged both of his blades into the fault lines on the other side, and it gave on the first wrench, the broken stone crashing heavily to the floor.

One more stab in the center point of its broken hide. Its back legs separated from its front, and the beast crashed to the ground in two halves, thrashing. For all of its unnatural agility when whole, it couldn't support its weight on two legs, and so simply fell on its side, both halves writhing like a severed worm.

"" Cressa growled. Jessie, having hopped down onto his feet, looked around to see her guardian was in a similar, but even worse state - its legs and head were all separated from its torso, but each part still individually convulsed and rolled around on the floor.

Scowling, Jessie brought his heavy booted foot down hard onto one of the smaller chunks of loose stone. It crumbled into pieces and dust, but to his horror, every tiny piece continued to shake and move, relentlessly continuing their singleminded assault, no matter how useless the effort may have been.

"" he said, taking a smart step back as one of its attached front legs made a hard, vicious swipe at his thigh. The creature's glowing eyes glared up at him balefully, shining with the odd essence that had filled the temple for the briefest of moments.

TRIVIA:

The only time we see Jessie truly smile is when he's around his family and loved ones.

~~~~~~~~~
The dias had caused all of this, but there was nothing to say that fiddling with it again would un-cause it. For all they knew, it might just perform another reparation warp and fully restore the destroyed gargoyles. Obviously, that wasn't a desireable consequence. Jessie glanced over the beast itself, looking for a switch, a power point, anything. The beast was all stone, except for the two glowing eyes. Jessie bent down to examine them a little closer, avoiding the canine's violent attempts to gnaw on his extremities. The bright orbs appeared to be made of glass, but on the inside they swirled and pulsed with energy, like a marble buzzing with electricity.
It was fairly obvious that they must have been a kind of battery - the things that connected the statue to the rest of the energy in the Temple, and pumped it with life. If they weren't - well, he'd just have to think of something else, wouldn't he?
He unflinchingly brought the tip of his smaller blade down onto the beast's left eye, but it refused to break. He tried twice more, and then called out to Cressa. ""
His weapon shimmered with its own light for a few moments, but he didn't wait or even hesitate before trying again. This time the glass shattered on impact, with an impossibly loud, explosive crash for such a small amount of material, and the beast, silent until this point, gave an unearthly roar.
"" Jessie said, raising his dagger like a chisel once more above the gargoyle's face. ""
He put out the second light with another explosive crash, and thankfully the beast and all of its bits and molecules halted and fell dead. He turned around to address the second monster, but Cressa was already taking care of it, blowing out both of its eyeballs at once with the force of two miniature cannons.
Jessie breathed out a sigh of relief. He opened his mouth again to issue a firmly-worded telling-off, when Cressa, with a loud, pained bellow, slumped to the ground, barely able to save herself from the horrible jolt of the hard floor. She fell on her front, elbows and knees, sobbing and groaning into the ground.
"CRESSA!" Jessie cried, scowl dissolving into shock. He leapt to her side faster than a bullet out of a gun, and gently clasped her shoulder to roll her onto her side. She screamed once and moaned in pain, but made no substantial protest.
"Hist, his, hist," he soothed, pulling a bottle of clear potion from his robe. So Cressa had been injured, and badly by the sounds of it, by the first beast's attack. She'd covered it up for the length of the battle, pumping her injuries with magic to prop herself up. Cressa was a truly remarkable woman. Just lying back and taking it wasn't in her nature. ""
She quietened slightly, greedily swallowing the healing potion as he pressed the rim of the bottle to her lips, carefully supporting the back of her head. She groaned again, face contorted, and let her head fall back onto the ground once Jessie released it.
"" she moaned, clenching her fist, and then unclenching it at once in agony. ""
""
"" she replied, ""
"" he replied, producing another potion. Unabashed, he gripped the material of her robe at its join and loosened it, giving the garment enough leeway for him to pull it down at the sleeves and totally off her shoulders. As he set to work carefully pouring and massaging the liquid into her injuries, Luathrae appeared meekly over the steps. She approached them slowly and knelt down, expression totally hang-dog and thoroughly ashamed. Jessie raised his eyebrow at her, eyeing the slashed legs of her trousers as he daubed another palm full of potion onto Cressa the Casualty. ""
She met his eye sheepishly. ""
He couldn't help but smile, and she gratefully grinned back. Cressa sighed, shifting slightly onto her side so that Jessie could reach up her robe and massage the side of her hip without totally removing her modesty.
"you
always get to feel me up, and not the other way around?>" she complained, ""
She snatched the bottle off him, intent on finishing off the job herself, and his lips quirked again in amusement. ""
"" she teased, downing the last of the potion, ""
"" Corie replied incredulously, ""
"" he answered wryly, ""
"" Cressa said happily.
Corie couldn't resist. ""
"" said Cressa, ignoring the bird. She reached forward and cupped Jessie's face in both of her hands, thoughtfully turning his face this way and that as if staring deep into his soul. He stared back at her, comically skeptic, waiting for her prognosis. ""
"" he laughed. ""
"" Luathrae suggested. They looked at her, and she shrugged. ""
"" Cressa replied, ""
She didn't explain why. Jessie raised his eyebrow. ""
"" Cressa replied, ""
"" he laughed. Devastated, Cressa pouted extravagantly, and so he grabbed the sides of her sleeves himself and yanked them up onto her shoulders, tongue in cheek.
""
"on,
>" he said, smiling at Luathrae. If he'd had two eyes, he might have winked. As it was, one-eyed winks look rather like unfortunately creepy blinks, and so they were not on the list of socially acceptable gestures. ""
The small, dark-haired woman giggled. Cressa, lips pursed in a smile, gave her friend a small push, which he gently returned.
"" Cressa said, placing her finger on the center of his chest. She raised her eyebrows at him. ""
This is a quick costume design for Jessie which was going to be used in Durem had they ended up going out onto the town. As it was, they ended up just escaping instead.
~~~~~~~~~

Jessie nodded at the passage closest to them. ""

"" Cressa replied, halfway between praise and teasing. She held out her hands in a genteel gesture, and he, with a quirked smile, accepted them and helped her rise gracefully to her feet.

"" she said theatrically, dropping into a deep bow with a calculated sweep of her arm. When she felt the join of her robe give, she stood back up quickly, and the material fell completely away from her front to her total horror and surprise. "" she cried, throwing a hand to her forehead and thrusting out her chest, ""

Tongue in cheek, Jessie reached forward and grasped both sides of the robe, tucking them around her waist and beginning the fiddly task of tying them together as if she were his child. Cressa, eyes filled with mischief, moved closer to him as he worked, until there were centimetres between them. Jessie didn't protest. It made securing the material tightly, the key to the whole process, easier.

He finished the chore and gave her a small, pseudo-scolding smack on the hip with the back of his hand. He'd made some minor changes to the wrap, which left the material to fall in a much more modest style, totally covering her thighs and the rest of her legs, though it still split in the middle. ""

"" Cressa concluded.

""

Her reply was hysterical. "" she cried, ""

"" he gasped. "that? That's an awfully chauvinistic thing to look for in a woman.>"

"not a damsel in distress!>" Luathrae insisted, and this time it was Jessie who shot her a look. "" she continued quietly, face burning. Giving up, she just turned her head away and gazed down at the intersection of the wall and floor. It was safer to keep her eyes downcast.

"" Jessie replied, uncharacteristically awkward. He also kept his gaze fixed on the join of the opposite wall. "looking for them.>"

"" Cressa wept, ""

Jessie, shaking his head, quickened his pace and pushed himself two paces ahead of Cressa. ""

As Jessie passed the next join in the floor, a loud, whistling whoosh of many tiny projectiles cut short his admission of what exactly Cressa was. Stricken, he cried out and dropped to the ground, as both the women screamed and surged forwards to help.

"" he barked, as Cressa, ignoring him, dropped down at his side, ""

""

"" the smaller woman squealed. Jessie snapped at no one in particular and shifted purposefully, ready to hop back up.

"" he said, hindered more than helped back to his feet by Cressa and Luathrae as they clung reflexively to his arms. ""

"" Luathrae protested.

""

The three of them, as one long lopsided black creature, shuffled back out of the range of the firing trap and somehow coaxed Jessie back onto the ground where he could be examined. The women took a look at his injuries and twittered, fussing in unison. He'd tripped a simple arrow trap, but it was dangerous nonetheless. With arrows in both his shoulders, his waist, his hip and one of his thighs, Jessie still protested his state of injury.

"" he cried, ""

"" Cressa shouted in his ear. ""

Luathrae was already busy pulling out the heads. "" she said, as Jessie continued to complain.

""

"" Cressa proclaimed, giving him a hard poke in the side just above his wound. He winced and slapped at her, and she retaliated by pulling hard on his ear.

""

""

"" he argued, lifting his head to glare up at her. They exchanged long, foul looks of hatred, and then, at the same time, their expressions twitched, and they descended into laughter.

"" Cressa giggled, ""

""

""

"" said Luathrae. Cressa and Jessie looked round, astonished, to see she'd already removed all five arrows... and, on inspection of the wound in his shoulder, it was completely healed.

"" Jessie asked, perplexed, ""

Luathrae smiled a little sheepishly, brushing a long strand of her hair back behind her ear in a very familiar gesture - Jessie had noticed it was a habit of hers. She picked up one of the bloodstained arrows from their neat row on the ground and twirled it in her long fingers. "ask
the body to repair itself, and it does.>"

"" he said, getting up to his feet unassisted this time. Luathrae followed him, but rather than leaving the arrows on the floor she scooped them up and placed them discreetly in her pouch. ""

The three huddled together under a shield of Cressa's making and stepped slowly through the trapped walls. Round after round of arrows whooshed from the walls in a deadly but short-lived flight. Thanks to the shield, they fell, broken and harmless, to the ground without getting anywhere near their targets.

The hallway turned out to be relatively short, and once they'd passed the expanse of trapped walls they came upon an intersection. They could carry on towards a large, sturdy-looking arched door, or turn to the left and access another at the end of a corridor a third the length of the one they were in. Really, as they had no clue where they were going or what they were looking for anyway, it didn't matter which they chose, but that didn't stop Jessie trying to weigh up the potential yet unknown benefits of each as they stopped. Strangely enough, his stomach was even twisting uncomfortably, and his skin prickled with cold. He couldn't be that worried about the choice, but it had come on so quickly, what else could it be?

TRIVIA:

Illness by poisoning is the most common form of disease amongst drow, which can be alerted to by rapid yellowing of the whites of the eyes. They do not normally experience nausea, and therefore yellowed eyes are an easy way of telling if the elf is feeling unwell by whatever cause.

They are pretty much immune to most forms of bacterial and viral illnesses which plague humans. These include colds, flus, STIs and STDs. They are also impervious to parasites such as lice, cancers, warts and degenerative diseases associated with aging.

However, some things they are as susceptible to as any other. These include certain kinds of wound infections, particularly flesh-eating bugs and necrosis. They can, of course, be injured and feel pain like any other, and are as susceptible if not moreso to mental health issues as any other race.

"" Jessie said, perturbed by the unusual sensation. The other two looked at him.

"" said Cressa, taking his face in her hands and tilting it up to meet hers. She looked hard into his eye, examining the sclera, which was at that moment its normal pearly, clear white. Her eyebrows furrowed, but at the same instant she was considering turning away a sickly yellow blotch appeared, seeping up from the water line. She looked at the filthy appearance in shock. ""

"" he replied quietly, ""

Cressa fished into her robes and pulled out a vial of clear, medicinal-greenish liquid, passing it to him. He unstopped it and downed the liquid in one go, and then all three stood and waited.

"" Luathrae asked tentatively. Jessie blinked, then gave a small involuntary shiver, placing a hand to his stomach.

""

He repeated the dose, and it didn't take long this time before he shook his head. ""

Cressa took another look at his eye, her own alive with tension. ""

"" Luathrae said. Her voice was laced with worry, but Cressa sounded remarkably calm despite her body language.

"" she said, ""

"" said Luathrae, pulling out and thrusting one of her stowed, bloodstained arrows towards her. She was obviously living deep within the realms of 'overly eager to be a help of any sort,' though whether this was because she wanted to redeem herself for her poor performance so far or she was overly concerned for Jessie's wellbeing wasn't entirely certain - though at that moment, it was actually the latter. ""

"" she said, running her keen senses over it. She seemed a little surprised by what she found. "<...There are still... traces. How unusual.>"

"" Jessie said gravely. He sounded serious, but anxiety-free. He and Cressa had obviously been in situations like this before from the way they were keeping their heads. Luathrae wasn't looking quite so composed, her face pale and pinched and her long ears appearing to droop, though this was probably just an illusion caused by her deathly expression.

"" Cressa replied, "imbued.
With a strange energy. No normal antidote can cure this, no more than enchanted skin can be broken by a normal weapon.>"

Jessie might have rolled his eye if the situation hadn't been so serious. ""

"" Corie echoed, her disembodied croak muttering around the party of three, ""

"" the sorceress continued, ""

""

Cressa smiled. "" she paused, ""

"" Luathrae blushed, averting her eyes, ""

"" Jessie protested, ""

She looked back at him with a hard, earnest gaze, as if confessing a sad secret. "" she answered truthfully, ""

"" Jessie said, with adamant finality. Cressa agreed, upholding her track record of friendliness over the past few days.

"" Jessie replied. He gave a small wince before continuing. ""

"" Cressa directed, leading them down the hall to the left. The door at the end swung open without any traps or tricks, taking them into a large, ancient library filled with towering shelves of thickly-bound leather books. Cressa looked around in appreciation. ""

She pulled one of the books off the shelf at random and flicked through it. ""

She plucked another off an opposite shelf, opening it immediately to the middle. She did a double-take. ""

The two women began to poke around the room, not entirely sure what they were looking for. Luathrae, however, found something helpful soon enough. She called out to the others and pointed at the carved sign atop a long section of shelves. ""

Cressa eagerly bounded over and began perusing the shelves. Jessie hung back, clutching at his stomach beside one of the other cases. The two women soon stopped being polite about their search and began ripping down books and giving them the once-over for anything useful. Luathrae's expression, which had been jubilant upon finding the section, began to tense and fall.

""

"" Cressa agreed, ""

Behind them, Jessie suddenly groaned loudly, and they turned around just in time to see him collapsing to the ground.

"Drisdril!" Luathrae cried, as the two of them rushed to his side. Cressa turned him over, just as he'd done to her when she'd been injured, and underneath her hands she could feel him shaking, muscles twitching and convulsing with the effects of the poison.

"" she demanded, tapping his face urgently with her long, witchy nails.

"" he wheezed, and it was then that they noticed he was indeed taking many short, laboured gasps for breath. Cressa continued speaking to him soothingly.

"" she said. She laid a hand on his chest, and his body immediately relaxed, breathing easier again after one final gasp. He closed his eye as if falling asleep, totally relaxing at her touch.

Cressa looked up at Luathrae. ""

TRIVIA:

Remember I mentioned Jessie would've been turned into a drider if he hadn't run away? Well, it was actually a little mean of me to hint at things like that, because it would've been on a technicality he has no knowledge of to this day. He didn't run away BECAUSE of this. It was actually just part of a long series of events that spiralled out of control.

~~~~~~~~~
"" Luathrae whispered, ""
""
Luathrae gave her one more worried look before she put her hands out and placed them parallel to Cressa's on top of Jessie's breastbone. The two women closed their eyes and reached out into his body, becoming still as statues as they probed.
"" Cressa was muttering, ""
Luathrae could see it herself. It was like a deep, evil, putrid violet mass, stalking through Jessie's bloodstream like many thousands of living razors all connected to one another in one indecipherable mass. Cressa wasn't approaching it correctly. She was pushing it, pulling it, trying to force it out of him, and so it just clung on more tightly with its disgustingly maniacal claws. Jessie gave a sudden, hard shudder as the poison drove deeper, and Cressa had to pull her attention away to stabilise him.
The younger elf actually felt slightly ridiculous sitting opposite a centuries-old sorceress and observing her battle with the imbued venom. If Cressa was failing to make any impression, what on earth could she do? She was a quarter of her age and a tenth of her skill.
Cressa was pushing back in again now. She'd sort it out soon. She had to.
Suddenly, like a relatively harmless-looking slug suddenly morphing into a gigantic, many-tentacled and vicious octopus (and the poison was hardly a benign slug to begin with), the poison transformed. It retreated further into Jessie's system, spreading itself out to every corner of his bloodstream. It was already in his lungs. Now, it moved into his brain - into his heart. She heard an awful, groaning, slow inhale come from Jessie's lips, and the sound almost broke her concentration entirely as she fought the urge to look at him. It was like a death rattle. It was a death rattle.
It seemed, she realised with a dreadful lurch of her stomach, that she was going to sit and watch Drisdril die from the inside.
She thought she could heard Cressa cursing under her breath, but then she realised that she was praying, and calling down fervent spells in several different languages. She hadn't realised Cressa knew how to recite spells. No matter what she did, though, the poison seemed to resist, as if it were covered in an armoured shell off which every one of the witch's assaults bounced off.
Cressa's presence disappeared, and the muttering stopped. Luathrae looked up in shock, and saw that Cressa was leaning down over her mate, breathing slowly onto his face. The air that came from her lips was filled with golden, swirling light. Luathrae didn't understand the significance of what she was doing, but it was definitely something to keep him alive. He was fading fast, and when Cressa looked up at her, her green eyes spoke an ocean of icy fear that chilled Luathrae to the bones.
She didn't say that she didn't know what to do. Luathrae could see it. She closed her eyes again, the image of the other woman's terror still burning her eyeballs, and knew that she had to try. It didn't matter how inexperienced she was. She had to try.
Please, leave this body. I ask that you leave, for all that is natural and good in this and all other worlds.
The poison didn't budge. Her will wasn't strong enough to force it out. A moment of panic struck her, and she tried again, with fear in her request. Her command had become pleading.
Please leave this body! I ask that you leave! In the name of all that is natural and good, I ask that you leave!
Nothing happened. No response. She could feel tears prickling her physical form. Soon enough she might be too upset to maintain her contact. She heard herself whimper and choke on tears, and she tried again and again, fearful and desperate, begging with the venom to leave. It was all that she could do. It was all that she could do.
Remarkably, however, something began to change. The more desperate she became, and the more violently unhappy her pleas, the poison seemed to take notice. It was as if a great, black boa constrictor were turning its reptilian gaze upon a mouse that was catching its interest.
It was at that point that Luathrae understood the meaning of true malevolence. The venom had been aggressive, violent. It was killing Drisdril in the most awful, frightening way imaginable - yes, like a boa constrictor slowly arresting its prey. But now, she realised, as that baleful attention fixed upon her, that this was an entity of most absolute evil. It was drawn to her misery. It whispered to her, with the voice of a thousand nails on a thousand chalkboards scraping inside her head.
I could leave. But what will be my price?
~~~~~~~~~

Jessie took the sudden, deep breath of a drowning man returned to the surface, causing Cressa to jump with surprise. She took his head in both of her hands, staring into his wide-open eye, certain that this was the end. However, his hands leapt up and wrapped themselves around her wrists, and he returned her gaze not with the blank, glazed, faraway look of an already-corpse, but with his ruby-red eye as bright and alive as always.

"Cressa!"

"" she choked, and suddenly tears were in her eyes. She threw her arms around him, kissing his face and mumbling prayers of thanks to everything and nothing at once.

""

"" she wept, cradling him in her arms. ""

Meanwhile, Luathrae sat quietly to the side, still as a sculpture. Her own eyes were still closed. She opened them slowly, and smiled at their joy, though it was as if her mouth were part of a mask. She looked tense, and sad, and gave a small sigh that alerted the other two to her presence.

Jessie prised himself out of Cressa's hold. ""

"" Cressa replied. Her face crossed with puzzlement, and she looked towards Luathrae, the saviour of the day. Luathrae, however, cut her off.

""

Cressa's puzzlement turned to surprise. Jessie gave a small laugh. ""

"" the sorceress protested. Luathrae neither forbade nor encouraged her to reveal the truth. Her eyes were just filled to the brim with unhappiness. "you
who removed it.>"

"" she acknowledged without enthusiasm. Jessie looked at her in surprise, obviously impressed.

"" he said, ""

Such bittersweetness. Luathrae couldn't help but feel a rush of pleasure at his compliment, even though all she'd achieved was hardly a victory. Then again, he lived. That was success enough for her. "" she replied quietly, her smile growing by a fraction of an inch.

They spent only a few minutes recuperating, as Cressa adamantly insisted that they had to get out of there as soon as possible. Then, they were left with another choice of where to go. The library had three doors - one to the south, the door to the east which they had come out of, and a door to the north. Upon inspection, none of them were trapped.

The question was, as always, which way to go... and, on top of that, what trials they would face when they got there. It was an absolute certainty - the Temple was out to get them.

TRIVIA:

I believe that the origins of the two drow reflect something of their characters. Jessie ended up leaving his home amidst a series of unfortunate events outside of his control. This affirms his role as a passive character who has been shunted through life by others. However, his unwillingness to give in totally to the demands of others and need to find his own destiny, which hastened the events leading to his exit, illustrates the two-pronged nature to his personality. There is an indominitable will, a stubbornness of sorts, inside him which has ultimately placed him in the position of power and influence he now enjoys.

~~~~~~~~~
"" said Cressa, with the air of having experienced a very bright flash of brilliance indeed, ""
"" Jessie answered drily.
"" Cressa grinned, ""
Luathrae giggled as Jessie rolled his eye. ""
She suddenly fell curiously silent, and Jessie looked at her with concern. ""
"" she beamed at him, ""
Cressa, having obtained Jessie's approval, had already pranced off to begin pulling at and examining the books and shelves. Jessie drew closer to Luathrae, who held his gaze with interest. He was about to share something intensely serious with her, it wasn't difficult to see. From the look in his eye to the lines of his gait, she could feel something that was solely meant for her coming, which was why he hadn't brought it up before.
""
She blinked up at him. ""
"just
saved my life. Have you forgotten already?>"
""
Jessie smiled at her approvingly, the soft, glistening halo of his hair catching the golden light which permeated all of the rooms of the Temple as he acknowledged her with a small nod of his head. "" he said, dropping down into a full, deep bow that bent him as far in half as he could go. Then, on his way back up, he paused, and seemed to realise that this gesture wasn't quite enough. He got down on his knees before her and pressed his forehead to the ground as if she were a queen of men.
"Drisdril...!" Luathrae blushed. Embarrassed, she dropped down to her knees a few moments after he did, and her hands fluttered as if to lift his head back up from the ground. She restrained herself at the last moment, and waited uncomfortably for him to rise back up by himself. ""
"" he said tenderly once he'd finally sat up. The change in expression on his face struck her even while it was occurring. He'd been smiling, but it was incredible the way his expression suddenly softened, with a kind of warm nostalgia she'd never seen before. It was hard to believe that this was the cold, angry man she'd seen so much of in the short time they'd known each other. His face held her hypnotised. ""
"" she replied with a frenzied, dismissing wave of her hand, blushing ever more furiously.
"" he laughed.
""
""
""
"" Jessie insisted, to which she could give no reply. ""
A single spark could have set her face on fire, she knew it. ""
At that moment, however, Cressa was so absorbed in ripping books from the shelves, the heavy tomes falling with thunderous clatters to the floor, that her eyes and ears and mind were not everywhere at once. It was a rare occassion, and Jessie was taking advantage of it. ""
Luathrae couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment. Oh. It's an honour thing. Of course it was, though. He had a girl back where they'd come from.
She scolded herself harshly, but tried to practise self-forgiveness at the same time. After all, when a man such as him spoke sweetly to you, it was only natural to wish...
"" he asked, soft expression tinged with concern. She must've been broadcasting her idiotic reflexive disappointment on her face.
Fortunately, Cressa at that moment saved her from any further embarrassment. "Aha!" she cried from across the room, and the others turned their heads to see a large, gaping cavity opening up in the wall behind a bookcase which was sliding off to the side. Cressa turned around to them with a triumphant grin on her face. ""
Fearlessly, she bounded into the darkness beyond the opening, and her footsteps could be heard clattering away down the stone slope. Luathrae turned her gaze sheepishly back to Jessie, almost wishing Cressa hadn't gone and left her alone with him again. He helped her to her feet silently, but as they approached the secret passage he began to speak again. ""
"Hm?"
""
"" she laughed, ""
"prefer
it to be corrupted?>" he smiled. ""
"" she shuddered, ""
""
"" she drifted off into thought as they walked down the sloping stone corridor, taking them down into the depths of the mountain. She then began to giggle. ""
""
"<'Rosebud.' Her little rosebud.>"
Jessie glanced at her. ""
"" she cried, almost not catching the implication. When she did, she turned to stare at him hard and truthfully once again. ""
"" Jessie sighed. He wasn't sure he could list the names of all of those in his life who had held unrequited feelings for him.
"" Luathrae replied quietly. Her eyes found the back of Cressa's head several metres down the winding path. ""
"" he said, catching her eye with a wry smile, ""
Luathrae gave a small sigh. ""
"" he sighed, shaking his head. ""
"" Luathrae gasped. Jessie seemed to branch off from the topic now, trailing off thoughtfully into storytelling.
""
""
""
"" she asked, half-teasing, half-incredulous. ""
He smiled back at her without any pride. ""
""
"" he replied. She couldn't meet his eye. Would there...? ""
""
"" he continued, ""
""
""
"" Luathrae laughed.
""
"" Cressa called, invisible around the bend. She peeped back around before they could reach it and smirked back up at them. ""
"" Jessie replied.
"" she commanded, and the two of them scooted down to meet her obediently. She gestured to the sturdy arched door with a flourish. "Let's see what's behind... door number one!"
TRIVIA:
By contrast, Cressa actively and knowingly sought revenge upon her family and her people. This led her to commit - actively and knowingly - unspeakable crimes in pursuit of her own freedom and destiny. As her origins were selfish, she is selfish. She cares only for herself and her own goals, be they benevolent or malevolent. Her kindness and her destructiveness come in equal doses. Whereas Jessie is often an unwilling participant, she is the instigator. She is active, he is passive. She cares for none, he cares for all. It is this balance between them that creates a powerful link between their destinies. It's also why Jessie can fall into a position of inaction while Cressa goes ahead with her own plans.
~~~~~~~~~

"" Jessie said, peering upwards as he led the way through the doorway. ""

"" Cressa said, stepping through behind him. ""

"" he replied, running one hand lightly down the surface of the rock. It was smoothed down, as if worn by many years of water erosion, but as the Temple was thoroughly man-made it was more likely to be sanded by hand or by magic. "what purpose?>"

"" Luathrae listed, ""

"" Jessie finished for her. Suddenly, the passage before them widened out into a gigantic chamber, so huge that the drow found themselves faced with the typical "wall" effect that signalled the furthest reach of their vision. The passage leading down to the cavern had been dotted with lamps, but through the door lay nothing but darkness.

The three of them stepped out into the open, though Luathrae was reluctant. ""

""

"" Cressa replied.

At that moment, a loud, slow grumble broke through the darkness from an unknown source. The party of three froze in place.

"" Jessie cursed, as the groan gradually came to its end. The room had also rumbled with the sound of a great body moving, shifting itself around, and for one horrible second the forbidding sound of a single set of gigantic claws clacking on the stone ground. ""

"" Luathrae whispered back, "big down here with us.>"

"Hist," Cressa commanded, wordlessly raising her arm. A ball of dim light appeared on the end - enough for Cressa to take a good look at what they were up against, and for the other two to catch a glimpse. In the far corner of the room, Jessie caught sight of a vast, pitch-black mountain rising up out of the ground, and then the light went out abruptly.

"s**t,>" the sorceress hissed, "dragon down here. A ******** DRAGON. What the hell do they need a ******** DRAGON for?!>"

Jessie felt the familiar tug of a clinging woman on his right sleeve as Luathrae inched closer and held on for dear life.

"" Cressa whispered, gesturing to the left, ""

The three proceeded to do just that, sliding silently across the floor. The benefits of stealth were obviously in evidence. When they'd crossed roughly half the cavern, Luathrae whispered fearfully into Jessie's ear. ""

"" he replied confidently. She wasn't convinced.

""

""

""

""

""

""

Lou furrowed her brow and moaned, faceplanting her head into the crook of his neck in despair. ""

""

" On a scale of one to ten, how ******** are we?"

He thought for a moment. ""

"" Cressa whispered, just before Corie chose her moment to let out a loud, earth-shattering sneeze.

The dragon gave off another loud rumble, and nobody missed the large reptilian eye flying open, luminous yellow in the dark and as big as one of Cressa's oversized breasts.

TRIVIA:

Cressa is intentionally a more mysterious character than Jessie. While hints are being dropped all the time as to his backstory and I have indeed spoken about it at length and in detail with a small group of intimates, I have breathed not a word about Cressa's to anyone.

This is because I have knowingly presented her character so that it will be perceived by the audience in a certain way.

If her backstory was to be revealed in its entirety that perception would change drastically.

I reveal Jessie's backstory because it serves to enhance his personality. Cressa's would flip it on its head. Therefore, until a time comes when I can say it would be beneficial to reveal, it will remain a secret.

~~~~~~~~~
Jessie remained perfectly still, Luathrae tense and quivering beside him, as the beast's yellow eye slowly roved over each of them in turn. It took a single large exhale, which slurred into a groan, which rose in a crescendo into an earsplitting roar.
In one long, slow move, the dragon raised its massive head, easily the size of a normal human's sitting room, craning it up on its long neck until it sat near the top of the cavern. The drow could hardly see anything by this point, but they heard it roar again, twice as loud as the first time, and begin to shift its massive, dormant body into action.
"" Lou whimpered, clinging on even more tightly as he gently pushed her to his back with the very arm she was holding on to. She got the message and reluctantly let go, but kept herself barely inches away from him, as if the shield of his body, no less fragile than her own, could save them if the beast's great claws came ripping through the air. Really, she just felt safe with him. He was the safest place to be.
"" he reassured her. He didn't mention that if they were going to slay the massive reptile he'd probably have to dash forward and abandon her at some point. He'd try and avoid that if he could, because his priority here was protecting her. At the first possible moment, they'd run for the safety of the exit. This was going to be a dodge and a dash rather than an epic battle.
Cressa would do something useful - he knew it. This battle, or whatever you would call it, was going to be largely down to her. He glanced in her direction, and sure enough something altogether very strange was going on. Cressa's skin and hair were rippling with energy.
As the great, black dragon hurled its house-sized head towards them, jaws gaping, a great white head surged forward out of nowhere. Part of the black dragon's throat was caught in its powerful jaws, and the two beasts fell backwards, roaring and grappling and wrestling in a tremendous skirmish. One dragon had been felled by another, more slender, bright-scaled female.
"" Jessie barked, grabbing Lou by the arm and pulling her into a sprint across the cavern. ""
Lou, boggled by the fight between giants going on in front of them, resisted his pull, causing herself to be dragged along a few metres before he obligingly stopped for her. ""
The two beasts were roaring and slashing at each other with their claws, Cressa's scales, as white and shining as her sleek hair, illuminating the action for all to see. She suddenly broke free and leapt to one side, and the beast followed her round.
At the last possible second, however, she abruptly dropped down onto her side and rolled her tremendous frame over onto her back. Her vast, soft underbelly was now exposed to the enemy.
Rather than following through its attack, however, the other dragon suddenly halted its progress, yellow eyes looking down at her with as much intrigue as a reptilian face could express. Cressa swished her tail and wriggled playfully, claws curled in benign little fists in front of her chest.
While the black beast contemplated this new development, Cressa solidifed her offer with a little, throaty purr. Lou hadn't been aware that dragons could make any kind of noise comparable to a purr until she heard it. This seemed to send the other dragon over the edge, as he - it was quite obviously a he by this point - dropped down his head and licked a small segment of her throat. Cressa rolled over at once and leapt back to her feet, trotting around prettily to the other corner of the cavern, where she flicked her tail high into the air and vivaciously wiggled her hind-quarters. The male was hypnotised. He'd practically broken his neck following her progress around the cavern, and watched, totally absorbed in her every move.
"<...Is she doing what I think she's doing?>" Lou asked, even more incredulous than when Cressa had suddenly polymorphed. Jessie just rolled his eyes.
""
" aren't easily led,>" she commented, allowing him this time to pull her across the room.
"" he answered darkly, reaching out to open the door. It wasn't locked, magically sealed, trapped or guarded in any way, much like the one they'd emerged into the cavern out of. It swung open, taking them into another sloping passageway.
Jessie released her arm and took her more gently by the hand instead, and they began to ascend the passage at a run. It was a good thing they'd remained linked, for after a short amount of time Luathrae suddenly cried out and staggered, clutching at her stomach.
"" Jessie asked, turning around and catching hold of her before she could fall all the way to the ground. He propped her back up onto her feet as she held at her abdomen, stifling a series of groans.
"" she insisted, keeping her face away from him. ""
"" he comforted, even though there was, of course, no way that he could promise that at all. ""
"" she said. ""
They ascended all the way to the top, where they met another door identical to the others. Jessie grasped the handle and pushed it open carefully to peep through. He immediately shut it again. ""
"" she asked.
"" he wondered aloud, pulling it out. The blade shimmered unnaturally in the lamplight. ""
""
He looked at her sharply. ""
She felt like arguing, but instead she gave a little shrug and smile. ""
He raised his eyebrow at her and didn't reply, though before he turned away she caught the tail end of amusement on his lips. He opened the door and leapt out, slamming it behind him, and the dogs immediately took note. He gripped his sword and braced himself as they all turned their red eyes in his direction and began bounding towards him with their unnatural agility.
A couple of summer costume designs. Yes, Jessie has to cover up even more in the summer than in the winter. Gloves and masks and blah. I imagine he's going to find it hard to teach like that, though, so they'll end up taken off and we'll see him getting painfully sunburned in the line of duty.
As for Lorika, this is just an informal variation of her robes, with a short dress underneath the iconic teal part, and no stockings. It MAY end up used, and maybe not. Depends.
As the first beast drew near, Jessie quickly darted off to the side. The gargoyles changed trajectory with inhuman reaction time, and Jessie felt the trailing part of his robe pulled by the slipstream of a gigantic stone creature as it leapt from him from the side and just barely missed. s**t. He'd severely underestimated these things, and doubled his pace for his life.
The dogs hounded him like, well, hounds, keeping pace a single bound behind his flying feet. They performed perfect circuits of the hall, and luckily the beasts didn't have the sense to split and perform more complicated manoeuvres to corner their prey. They nipped at his heels with every step. Making any kind of sharp turn was a risk, because they could easily seize the moment to pounce upon him. All he could do was take a run-up across the full length of the huge hall and scale one of the vertical pillars lining the walls - first in bounds of momentum, then by scrambling, quick as a squirrel, as far out of reach as he could get.
Four massive stone bodies slammed, one after the other, into the pillar just below as he climbed. Hard enough so that bits of their bodies broke off - toes, ears, noses and other such extremities went flying as Jessie scrambled further and further up and away. Finally, he came to a rest, clinging hard to support himself on the smooth structure.
Fortunately, while the dogs were fantastically powerful on a horizontal basis, their massive weight kept them from jumping very high. They could perform as many running jumps as they liked, but they were never carried high enough to come within reach of him - not even close. That didn't stop them from trying, however, determinedly hurling themselves up at the elf-shaped pinata that dangled far out of their reach. Jessie dangled on, trying to calculate what to do. Their eyes wouldn't be destroyed by normal weapons, so shooting them out with one of his guns was out. He needed to get back down there and get within range without being crushed and savaged. If only he'd stood his ground in the first place, perhaps he would've had an advantage. He hadn't anticipated just how agile they could be in open spaces.
The section of wall that hid the secret passage creaked open at the other end of the hall. Lou peeped out, and cursed to see that he was cornered.
What could they do now? Were they going to have to wait for Cressa to finish... doing whatever she was doing to the dragon? How long could Jessie hold on?
He happened to be wondering the exact same things. As for how long he could hold on, well... it was like asking "how long is a piece of string?" Could be long, could be short, could be somewhere inbetween depending on an awful lot of things. He was banking on more than an hour but less than forever when one of the beasts suddenly slammed its entire body into the pillar below. The cracks made previously enlarged and the whole structure shook, causing its hanger-on to give a gasp of surprise as he slid down a metre and a half. He'd said it before, and he'd say it again: s**t.
No more time to sit thinking. Lou crept out through the hidden door, tiptoeing across the vast expanse of the hall. Her heart hammering, she bent down and removed one of her boots with fumbling hands. When she stood up, however, she seemed gathered and calm, and ready for her imminent act of bravery.
She hurled the boot as hard as she could. It fell far short, but the dogs whirled around immediately at the clatter, and broke off after her at the same instant she turned to flee. Jessie cried out in horror and leapt from the side of the pillar, coming to land on the back of the last beast. He quickly broke its glowing, marble-like eyes, and its body crumpled, skidding to a halt.
The other three gained on Lou quickly, who thwarted them at the last second by dropping down to her knees. Brains over brawn. The monstrous wolves bounded straight over her and their massive bodies skidded slowly to a halt, by which time she was turning and running back towards the safety of Jessie.
She reached out to him as she approached and he caught her with his free arm. Their arms briefly interlocked; he gave hers a reassuring squeeze before she slipped behind him. "" he said, ""
The dogs were racing back towards them, and they both braced themselves for contact. After just a few long, horrible seconds, the grotesque leader of the pack loomed in front of them like a runaway train about to make contact. Jessie swung his sword into the beast's brow, holding it there firmly as he, Lou (her hands on his sides for support) and the dead gargoyle slid across the ground. The elves both ducked just as Lou had done once before as the two other beasts bounded over their dead sibling, and over them. Two down, two to go.
Jessie darted forward, pulling Lou with him by the hand, to meet the third one as it turned its massive body around - it was either that or wait for them both to close in on them in a pincer. Lou hadn't anticipated the movement or its speed. Her hand jerked from his halfway through, and before he could turn around again after destroying the beast he heard the gut-wrenching sound of Luathrae screaming. She hadn't managed to evade a third time, and Jessie had to destroy the final monster's battery perched on its back as it pinned her to the ground.
