Pausing at the male's voice, her eyes darted along the path ahead. Slick. Of course it was slick. Why wouldn't it be? Each step increased the pain and made her dizzy. She couldn't deny it anymore... but was it supposed to hurt this much? "Cou- ...could you help?" She called up, gritting her teeth, hand pressing against her side while the other kept her balance.

"Help?" Kincaid frowned...why would she be having that much trouble just climbing a - oh no. The foxtaur's golden eyes widened slightly as he shook his head, "Don't tell me." In his hurry down towards Mersi, Kincaid missed seeing a small protruding root that normally wouldn't trip anyone - but of course with the past days of rain that patch ground wasn't hard. It was slick.
With a small grunt of surprise Kincaid went sliding down towards Mersi. Adrenaline rushed through him as he grabbed at a small tree and twisted just so he would barely brush against Mersi instead of tackling her. "S-sorry." He breathed before reaching out to help Mersi with her balance.
"Here." With ease that came from helping his mother with patients Kincaid slipped an arm around Mersi's back and helped to walk with her up the path. "We'll be there in just a few steps." He commented as the willow tree came back into view.

Hearing Kincaid rush toward her, she gasped and jumped to clutch the tree she was next to, feeling the small brush against her. Her head turned to watch until he reached her again, struck silent. No limping, no bleeding... "Are you okay?" She asked after a moment of focusing on her own steps up the path. Compared to the sunbaked path she had been on previously, the slick tree protected path was cool to her paws. Her paws slipped a couple times, but Kincaid was there to help her balance. Each little stumble created more pain though as her muscles fought between balancing and the spasms.

"Yeah." Kincaid nodded though his gaze winced as they took more steps. His mother always made sure that the patient was the first priority - no matter what. Not like he was copying his mother, but thinking of her did help to keep himself calmer. "Here." He led Mersi to the willow tree and bent down to clear twigs away from a small mossy part of the bank.
That should be soft enough...I hope. "Jeez." He breathed as he ran a shaking hand through his hair. "Why can't Reisa or Mom be here for this?" But from the looks of Mersi...neither would be able to make it to the clearing on time. With a sigh Kincaid looked around and spotted something, "I'll be right back."
Walking away from Mersi, Kincaid found a shed that was obviously abandoned. Yet, it seemed like somehow it had protected itself from being destroyed by nature over the years. "Magic?" With a frown Kincaid walked through the slanting doorway and found a basket. Maybe in their hurry some things had been left?
That or...Kincaid rolled his eyes. Magic. It was always those weird magical ways of the cattaurs. "Seems cousin Tori had a feeling about this place being needed one day." He smiled softly as he pulled out the basket. A chiming noise rang faintly as something around the place finally broke. Shaking his head once more the foxtaur headed from the shed now carrying a basket with a blanket sticking out. From the way it felt though Kincaid reasoned that some other items were hidden by the woolen blanket.

By the time she was set down, Mersi almost didn't want Kincaid to let her go. He had become her only support. She had been planning on the healer being there, and her mother. She sighed mentally. Nothing about this was going as planned. Finishing as unexpectedly as it started apparently. "She said... She said I still had a month yet." She complained uselessly, hissing through her teeth. But, in a sense, she was trying to explain herself. She thought she had given Kincaid some time to adjust by coming out here today... She thought they would have more time to talk about what they would do... Feeling like she wanted to curl up into a ball until it all passed, she dug her fingers into the ground as the pain radiated up the rest of her body. It was all coming on so quickly, so strong, she could barely remember the calming techniques the healer had shown her. Her hand pulled from the ground and reached toward Kincaid. She needed... something.

Kincaid's ears twitched at Mersi's comment. "Aye, they can say that but nature always likes to give surprises." No one could tell the exact time anyone was going to give birth - they could only get lucky enough to be near the right date. Unlike most Kincaid had seen several childbirths and could actually feel some calm. That is as long as he tried to forget whose children it was.
Reaching out he squeezed Mersi's hand. "It'll be okay. Trust me, Mersi." He whispered while digging through the basket with his free hand. But something else caught his eye first. A strange silverish green plant was growing next to the willow tree and with a small smile the foxtaur reached over and plucked it. "Chew it'll make you space out a bit so the pain isn't as sharp." He handed it to Mersi before digging frantically through the basket again.
What that all he could do now? Kincaid frowned before making himself take a deep breath. "Jeez. Why out of all the things..." He muttered before looking back at Mersi. Sympathy showed in his eyes as he realized how much worse it must be for the female. Sure he was nervous and nearly freaking out...but here she was all alone with only him - someone she probably still hated - to help.

Mersi did her best to focus on the contact of Kincaid's hand. It may be just Kincaid, but he was better than if it had happened on her way to see him. At least they had waited until then. Hadn't he said his mother was a healer? Maybe he would know a few things? Hopefully... She stared at the plant he had just handed her a second before a gasping laugh broke through. "Again with the plants." Trusting him with a plant had been the pebble that had started this boulder that rolled down a mountain leading to this moment. Still, the plant found its way to her mouth. At the least, it would be a cushion between the teeth that ground it down. As the contractions reached toward their first peak, Mersi felt sure she was going to break Kincaid's hand from clenching it so tightly. If the plant helped the pain at all, she couldn't tell. "Kincaid- They- They-" She gasped for breath. The children were coming... ready to be greeted by their anxious parents.

Kincaid let out a loose chuckle. "Again, I know." His ears went flat against his head as he felt certain that all the bones in his hand were going to be little pieces of dust by the time this was over. Still...he clenched his teeth and held on.
Suddenly as realization hit him Kincaid was glad he had laid the deer hide from the basket in front of Mersi before holding on. Their children were coming and...well...he was stunned. "Just breath." Really he didn't know if the advice was just for Mersi or him as well.
Kincaid took a deep breath and closed his eyes tightly before opening them again with determination. Everything was going to be fine.

After the process that felt like it had taken the whole evening, and really it nearly had, three fresh faced newborns lay between the two new parents. Mersi, half asleep from exhaustion, couldn't take her weary eyes off them. One hand still refused to let go of Kincaid's still, though now it merely held instead of crushed. The babies were here, and he hadn't run. Her other hand stretched out, alternately stroking through the fine hair of her children. No... Their children. She turned her head to look up at Kincaid, eyes searching his face half hidden by drooping eyelids. She didn't know what to say now. One of the boys yawned softly, legs kicking slightly as he tested them out. The other simply petted Mersi's leg that he lay against, feeling it with sensitive hands.

Kincaid smiled warmly at Mersi. His thumb brushed brushed lightly over her fingers before he squeezed her hand once again. Leaning back against the willow tree, Kincaid closed his eyes and only opened them to peek at the tiny kit that had wandered between his paws.
With a yawn the little girl cuddled close to the warm paws of her father before blinking up at him with wide golden eyes. Kincaid made a small face and the infant giggled before grabbing at his paw and closing her eyes.
Warmth spread through his chest as he looked over all three of their children and he smiled at Mersi. No words came from his mouth, his warm relieved smile said it all.

At Kincaid's smile, relief seemed to flood through Mersi. Had she really been so worried about what he might do? A smile graced her features in return, the strain of childbirth and worry lifting for the moment. They had created beautiful children... It would be all right. She pulled the boys closer to herself as she allowed her eyes to close. "Thank you." She breathed softly as she quickly fell into a deep and dreamless sleep. The boy with the golden fur curled happily against Mersi, cooing softly as he nuzzled to her skin. The son with the head of green hair squeaked, crawling up to wedge himself between Mersi and Kincaid, laying down contently on top of Mersi's arm while resting his head against his father.

Sleep. Kincaid closed his eyes willingly and let peaceful darkness take him. Though darkness can reveal dreams and hopes as well. Especially with the promise of the future so strong in the babies....especially with them.
--------------time skip! (A couple of months later)---------------
Kincaid snuggled closer to his feather pillow and yawned. Morning sunlight was hitting his room, which was odd considering that he had dark curtains usually in his windows. So why was...?
Opening his eyes, the foxtaur peeked around the room. "Wait a second...this isn't my room." He whispered before looking down at his 'pillow'. And that wasn't a pillow but a tail.

A golden gaze looked warmly up at him as his daughter giggled, "Mornin' daddy! Ya slept in late 'gain." She laughed again before slipping out of the bed with an 'umph.'
"Corrine?" Kincaid bolted out of the bed and looked out of the window. That was right, he was at Mersi's. "How late did I sleep this time?"
"Pwetty late!" Corrine giggled before tugging at her father's hands, "Come on there might be some breakfast left!"

Mersi stood at the pail of water, cleaning off the used breakfast dishes, eyes slipping to the door that Corrine had slipped into a short time ago. A plate remained on the table for whenever Kincaid got out of bed. Opposite the plate, two little boys were finishing their food. "Gabriel, you're supposed to eat food, not play with it."
Licking his plate clean, Wyatt held it up to show it off to his mother. "All clean Momma! Don' need ta wash it either! See?" He seemed fairly proud of his idea.
Mersi chuckled softly, patting Wyatt with a damp hand. "Nice try sweetie." Frowning, she squeezed the back of Gabriel's neck with a light shake, trying to keep from smirking at his condition. "Eat, not play."
With food covering part of his face and a little in his hair, Gabriel squeaked happily at his mother's grasp, his tail flicking playfully. "Eat! Eat!" He shoved another handful into his mouth, chewing loudly until Mersi gently pushed his mouth closed, smiling innocently up at her.

"Momma!" Corrine giggled as she latched onto Mersi's back leg. The child pointed behind her at the groggy figure in the doorway, "Lookie! Daddy finally got up."
"Yeah. Yeah. Daddy's up." Muttered Kincaid as he ran a hand through his ruffled hair. This whole getting up early in the morning thing was going to kill him. "Daddy just had to stay up late to run things to his customers last night."
Corrine had scampered over to her brothers and was staring intently at Gabriel. "You's gots breakfawst aaaall ova your face, Gab." She shook her head with a grin.
Kincaid innocently weaved an arm around Mersi's waist as he leaned in and looked at their children. "Is there anything left?" He asked softly, but he pulled back with a smile as he noticed the other plate. "Thanks, Mersi."

Mersi grinned, reaching down to run her hand through Corrine's hair. "Is he now?" Her eyes flicked up to Kincaid's ruffled form with a playful smirk. "He sure slept in today, didn't he?" A light blush graced her cheeks at Kincaid's touch, still getting used to his casual view on the subject. It didn't help that she was growing to like it... "You're welcome. You better get at it. Gabriel was trying to get his little hands on it to play with. It'd be all over his hair if it wasn't for me~" She went back to the pail with the boy's dishes. "Late night for the customers? Was there an emergency?"
"Hi daddy!" Wyatt yipped happily, waving at Kincaid as he slipped from his chair. He followed after Mersi and watched her clean the dish he thought he had cleaned just fine with his tongue. Bubbles? He quickly reached his hand in and stuck the soapy appendage into his mouth, instantly gagging on the potent flavor. "Don't make ta plates icky mommy!" He pleaded through his coughing.
After grinning at his sleepy father, Gabriel looked wide eyed at at Corrine as if her news was completely new to his knowledge. He put an already messy hand to his face, giggling at the food he found. He licked at his fingers, then looked curiously at Corrine, holding out his messy hand with a fresh supply of food from his cheek. "Wan' some?"
