The boy couldn't look away as he watched in horror as the bronze tossed a girl into the sands. Was she dead? It was possible. Death's weren't really common at Hatchings but they weren't really rare either. Fortunately Zhierd didn't have much time to dwell over the thought as he quickly scrambled to get out of the way even faster. They may have already lost one girl and he didn't need to add to the casualties.

Zhierd finally breathed a sigh of relief as the dragonet impressed. Thank goodness. Now that the dragonet was impressed he was less likely to cause much trouble. At least not right now anyway. Who knew about the future? The boys heart sank a little though. There weren't many eggs left and his chances of impressing were growing slimmer.

After a quick glance at the healer in charge, Tofir sprinted to the girl who had been thrown to the sands. He was joined by several other green-clad healers, but he was the first healer to reach her. He was the one who was kneeling beside her, letting her squeeze the feeling out of one of his hands as she gibbered in terror. One of the others could check her over, he decided. Tofir did his part, looking as reassuring and calm as he could, and speaking softly to her, asking the questions one was supposed to ask: Where did it hurt? How badly? Did she know her name?

"I've got it," he said to Cass. "Go back to the sands. There's still eggs out there with dragons who might be looking for you."

And then he went back to attending to the injured girl. She would be fine, and as soon as she let go of his hand he meant to go back to watching the hatching. He eased his hand out of her grip as soon as he could, and did just that. Unfortunately, he'd missed Yulu leaving the sands. He'd wanted to congratulate her while she was at the table, but he couldn't see her, and from his associates' grim expressions, he wouldn't be allowed to socialize anyway.

He might be mistaken, but it looked like Yulu had left her green behind. Had she not Impressed after all? If that was the case, where was she?

Oh... oh that poor girl! Layla raised a hand to her mouth, unable to stifle a gasp. No! Everything had been going so well! Was she alright? Healers were heading that way, she would have to be alright! Shards, she hoped that bronze Impressed soon... oh... He had, he'd chosen. She relaxed only a very little, worry for the girl who had been thrown so violently still on her mind... She'd be fine. Tofir had said, the best healers were all here, and that girl was the only one hurt, she'd be taken care of.

Still, even as she looked back at the remaining eggs Layla glanced over her shoulder every so often, trying to work out what was going on with the injured girl. She would be alright, right? They'd have a hatching with no deaths, and she'd make a full recovery, right? Shards. Her feet hurt, and she was terrified, not of being injured now so much as of being left standing. So many of them would, she knew that, but that didn't make it an easy idea to contemplate.

As the healers crowded around the injured girl, Cass looked up as one in particular addressed her. She could only nod silently as she released the pressure she had been putting on the strange girls arm to try and stop the bleeding. Let the healers do their jobs. She stood, feeling a little wobbly and turned to go back to the sands. She got back to her place in time to see the green grass egg start to crack, but was distracted when she saw the red on her hands. She felt a little sick, but not as much as she would have if it had been her own. She hurriedly wiped the offending bodily fluids off onto her candidate robes, staining them, but not caring. She spared one last glance to the fallen girl, and then redevoted her attention to the eggs, hoping something similar wouldn't occur for the remaining hatchlings, and that the girl would make a full recovery.

Oh that poor girl, at least healers were tending to her. Would she be alright? Lelia sincerely hoped so. She knew that these kinds of things happened but...the last hatching, with the greens was far too fresh on her mind for comfort. Wouldn't it be nice if this hatching resolved itself with no fatalities. It was too much to hope for no violence, but aside from the thrown girl, it seemed that everyone so far was okay. Minor scrapes, bumps and bruises. People could live with those. She hummed a silent song, tapping the sand a little in a rhythm. A song would make her feel better, songs were good. They could calm her, make her feel better, distract her from the tension building in the room. Three eggs left. Three dragons left, and already the grass egg was twitching. What would come out? Who would the dragon choose. Lelia wanted to know, but figured she would find out soon enough, and contented herelf to wait.

Yulu had reached the table in time to see the girl get tossed from the sands and Toir make a move for her, one of the stupid Candidates having tried to help to, and she frowned as she waited to see if perhaps she should assist. Tofir probably did not know much over the trauma as she did, his training different, but the others would know what to do. She had different priorities now, namely the one that butted up against the back of her leg with an unhappy thought.

You really left me there.

"And yet you somehow made it here on your own anyway. I know you're hungry, I can feel it, so we'll talk later once I get you your fill."

Yulu took the knife in her hand and didn't even attempt to speak with the others at the table, her mind still performing the single focus act. She must think only for her dragon now.

Sethal cringed as the young dragon grabbed a girl and threw her onto the sands. Just watching a Hatching wasn't supposed to be dangerous! Mental note: if he ever attended another Hatching, he was not going to be anywhere near the front of the stands. When the angry bronze began to head in his general direction, the apprentice Runner got ready to get out of the way.

...but that never became necessary. The little dragon looked at him - him! - and talked to him. Sethal stared for a long moment, then glanced first to one side, then the other. This wasn't really happening, was it? He was just here to drop off a letter!

SETHAL. Pay attention! We are going to eat now. With no further ado, Pipith headed back down towards the sands, fully expecting His to follow him to the tables. NOW, Sethal!

After another bewildered look around, Sethal obeyed, scuttling after Pipith. "Hey, wait up!" he protested aloud.

As the New Grass Egg rocked, the brown in the remaining clutch watched. The cracks fell away, and still he watched as a green stepped out, her body dark and her face light around her eyes.

She beamed. Anyone could tell as she marched out of her egg and looked around. Her head was raised high as she looked amongst the crowds of candidates. There seemed to be a lack of desire to rush into things, but this wasn't good enough for the brown who was no longer waiting.

He stalked over to the green, ready to encourage her to move, but the green was going to have none of that! She turned right around and snapped at him once, her teeth grazing his nose. For a moment, the brown was stunned and then he lifted himself up unto his haunches and spread out his wings.

He was demanding that she do as he asked and he followed her around the Golden Stag Egg, hissing low warnings from his throat when she paused for too long.

Iloraz had quickly learned that his was impatient, and had modified his feeding style accordingly. Thankfully, she had begun to chew her meat after he had told her too, so at least there was a less of a chance of her chocking.

He glanced over the sands, noticing that a few more eggs had hatched, although he couldn't tell if they had all impressed or not.

Mine, pay attention to me. I am still hungry, Betteth said, butting Iloraz's leg. He looked down at her, and offered her another piece of meat, before glancing back over at the sands.

So much was going on! A boy in the crowd and gained the attention of the bronze, and he could tell that he had Impressed him, Of course, I wish he were mine, but that wouldn't be right. He is that boy's. How rare an occasion! There were still eggs to hatch, and still others he wanted to see Impress. I think that... That's Layla, isn't it? How had I not noticed before?

Cass watched as the new grass egg finally hatched, and, as she had guessed, a green stepped out. She was quite surprised when it stood up to the brown dragon, who still seemed content to hang out around the other eggs, even going so far as to graze his nose. What spunk the little one had!
The blond girl couldn't help but giggle a little at the green's antics.
that's right little one! Show him what for! she couldn't help but think, grinning widely as she watched the brown chase the green around the golden egg. If that brown could take his sweet time impressing, than surely the green could to! How was that fair for him to demand she do what he refused to do himself!!

Lelia smiled and repressed a giggle at the green. She sure showed that brown, good for her! Not that she approved of violence, but the green didn't seem to be do that for violence sake, and rather to remind the brown of his place. How uppity he was, hissing and impatient. Perhaps her earlier assumptions about him were wrong. Well, at least he wasn't hurting anyone, that was good. Hopefully he would find His, the green would find Hers, and everything would work out. Was it too much to ask that things go smoothly from now on?

"Mine, Erath is lazy," the green said in a conspiratorial whisper that was easily heard in the minds of everyone around them. "I promise I won't be lazy, mine. Did you hear Akerth and Pipith?" She tsked, and continued rambling even as Kylar, and he'd have to change his name now, he realized, fed her the bite-sized bits of meat from the bowl, making sure to stuff his dragon to contentment.

He had tried to get Tatleth to move away from the table so others could share it, but she'd plopped her soft hide down right there in front of it, and kept leaning towards Skananth as if sharing every bit of knowledge her newly hatched brain seemed to hold.

Wow! That little green sure knew how to stand up for herself! Layla grinned, a little pleased to see the brown brought down a peg; that's show him he couldn't just push everyone around!... But would a bold dragon like that want her? She seemed in no Rush to Impress. Maybe she wanted to wait for the golden egg she had been so close to whilst inside her egg. Agh! The suspense was almost too much!

Hey! Hey! No fair! The little green squalled as her brother chased her around the Queen egg. Several times she stopped to check if he was still following her, but then skittered away when she heard his low hiss of warning. What a meanie!

On their second trip around the Golden Egg she finally made a break for the female candidates, not looking once over her shoulder as she ran. The brown took three steps after her and hissed, which only spurred the little green on.

Cass! Cass! Tell the nasty Akerth to leave your Vespereth alone!

The green promptly attempted to hide between her rider's legs. Only seconds later, however, she was peering back around the girl to make a face at the brown dragon. Take that!
