i play clarinet and got my braces back in may.i couldn't play for the first couple of weeks but lucky me it was the next to last day of school that i got them. now it only hurts to play when i get the wires changed. if you don't want the braces cutting into your bottom lip i recommend getting some of what my lesson teacher calls lipsavers. they're little white strips of some sort of paper that you lick over your bottom braces that prevents them from rubbing against you lower lip. they really work for me

I used to have braces. It didn't hurt while I played flute, but it affected my tone a lot. I dropped from third to seventh first after getting them. Piccolo was a different matter. My mouth used to bleed after about fifteen minutes. @_@

I play the flute, and when I had braces back in middle school it wasn't that bad for me.. though when I got them off my Freshman year of high school I noticed a large difference!

my friend actually got braces, but she was amazing, but she got so used to them that she was amazing, but for the first couple of weeks after she got them off, she said playing felt off, but you kinda get used to it (I don't know since I never had braces)

I play clarinet and have braces,
it doesn't seem to matter that much.
It doesn't hurt when I play.
But of course, it doesn't hurt when I get them tightened,
and it does for everyone else. o.O

I've actually been playing trumpet with braces for the last 3 years. It was a hard adjustment at first (especially considering I got them on my senior year of high school right before music auditions for college). However....it can be done. I use a braceguard (basically a piece of plastic that I put over my top teeth to keep my lips from getting cut).

The main thing is not to get discouraged. There is an adjustment period (ESPECIALLY for brass players), but there is no limit to what you can do. I'm actually one of the top 5 or 6 players in a studio of 20, and the ONLY one with braces.

Just keep working smile

I need braces, but I don't want them because I know they'll affect my Saxophone performance

I got braces after I already knew how to play clarinet and tenor sax and they bothered me for a while but I got used to them. They rip up my bottom lip on occasion but I just use my wax. I'm learning mellophone and my braces don't bother me at all.

Basically you just adjust and then you're fine, until you get them off (I don't know what happens then....).

Well i play the oboe also. It's hell for me because my teeth got pushed out a little and it makes it SO hard for me to close my lips correctly around the reed. I wanna quit.
But i also play the clarinet and i have this thing on the roof of my mouth and i have to hold my clarinet at a different angle for my teeth to touch the mouthpiece.

This kid who rides my bus plays tenor sax in the wind ensemble and says it doesn't hurt. The first and third trombonists, however (who fight over my f*cking lap >>), think it hurts really badly. I guess it would differ depending on which instrument.

Helpful hint: when opening up your mouth to play, open up your throat, too. It gives a deeper sound and you may be able to get your teeth to a position where it's comfortable.

I'm actually getting braces next week. Along with a tongue guard. I kind of WANT to get them, so I can get as much done before high school. Unfortunately, looks like it'll last into at least sophomore year. >_< Well, might as well get used to playing my sax with them in before my first band camp. >_>

A tongue guard is something that goes across the roof of your mouth...I thnk that'll make it REALLY hard to play.

I'm a flautist, and when I first got my braces on I could barely play my Flute and I couldn't even play my Piccolo!!!! crying

It was really bad For the first few weeks, but eventually it got better. Braces aren't so bad once you get used to them, but the difficult thing is going to be getting them off and having to adjust to them all over again. confused

not really. I play with a retainer in. Having things all up in the roof of your mouth is annoying at first, but it grows to be a part of you. I actually play better with it in. 0_o

It's not too painful for me. I'm a clarinetist, and I have braces... Man, I have for years! The only time it really hurts is right after you get your braces on and right after getting them tightened/adjusted. Don't worry about it, m'dear. There's nothing a little painkiller can't do for ya. ^_^

I have a question for y'all. Do braces mess with your playing at all? Does it make playing certain instruments hard to play? I'm kinda worried 'cause I play the oboe, and I'm getting braces soon. sweatdrop

braces SUCK when you play oboe, like when you play, you have to wrap your lips around your teeth and my braces dig into my lips. kinda sucks.... and that teeth bumper thing that they put on the top of your mouth is the WORST! i kept hitting my reed on it and i always had food in it lol. then i broke it off cause i was tired of it.
