Nozomi just stared out the window once again, and there was strangely more appeal at staring. Maybe it was because of his grown curiosity. Now that he knew at least a bit about the world, he wanted to know more. It may seem impossible, however, because the hospital wouldn't dare let him leave so often.

Why had he ever been born mute? What was wrong with him that he was disliked? It wasn't like he had gotten everything he wanted. Heck, whatever he wanted was always out of his reach. He wanted to see the world, he wanted to be like other people, he wanted a loving family, and... he even wanted Mother back.

Kiba sighed, letting his head roll forward so that his forehead was touching the blonde's hair. "What was your mother like, anyway?" He asked suddenly, taking into consideration that Nozomi found her a sensitive subject and usually couldn't talk about her without thinking sad thoughts.

"I don't mean to be mean or anything. It's just if I know a little bit more about how she was like, I could try and be more like her for you." He smiled kindly, lifting his head as he looked out the window again with the younger boy.

Hearing Kiba's words, Nozomi began to write on his notepad again. I don't exactly know how to describe what Mother is like, he wrote. I guess you can say that she was everything to me. She was my teacher, she was very much like a mother to me, she was my best friend, and she was the only one who loved me. He shook his hand a little, since it was aching as much as his heart.

Whenever I accidentally walk outside the room, she wouldn't scold me like everyone else, he continued. She told me many stories about the outside world and every time I'm sad she would make me smile. Nobody else ever did that for me.

Kiba's eyes slowly scanned the words on the pad. She was the only one who loved me. Those words kept on circulating around in his brain as if there were no meaning to it. But of course there was meaning to his words! Why couldn't Kiba see that?

"Well, I may not be everything that she is, but I'll try my hardest to be like her." Kiba smiled. "I'll love you as much as she did." He whispered into Nozomi's ear.

I don't know if you'll ever be like her, Nozomi wrote. No two people can be alike. That's what Mother told me. His heart fell a little when he heard Kiba's whisper. That couldn't be possible. Nobody would love him as much as Mother did. Nobody ever had, and he doubted that anyone ever will.

There were many times that Mother would tell him that not everyone was heartless, but it seemed that everyone in the hospital became that way. Of course, Mother was somehow immune to the heart-snatching hospital, and now it seems that Kiba had that immunity as well.

"Don't say that, O ye of little faith." Kiba smirked, letting go of the younger boy and standing up. "Well, if you don't believe in me that much, then I might as well leave." He sighed with a playfully sarcastic tone, walking out of the room as he did so. But instead of leaving the hospital, he walked down to the cafe.

When he came back up, he was holding two trays of food. Hopefully, Nozomi didn't really believe him. He opened the door again and set the trays on a table. "Miss me?" He asked quietly, but in a very charming and humorous way.

Nozomi panicked when he heard Kiba's words before he left the room. If he had any voice, he would beg the volunteer not to leave, since he was afraid of being left alone. While he had been left in the room, he hid under his blankets, expecting something terrible to happen.

He didn't even know who had entered the room and he expected to hear bad news. The same words had been told to him by Mother, in that same playful tone that Nozomi would always silently giggle at, and those were her last words. After that, she was gone, and the same thing might happen to Kiba.

Kiba realized that maybe the younger boy had taken his words to heart a little bit too much. Nozomi hadn't moved from underneath the covers for quite some time. Perhaps Kiba had been too serious in his tone? He didn't think so, but he had a feeling that because he had not been experienced to many people, he wouldn't know the difference between serious and sarcastic tones.

"Nozomi? I was just kidding." Kiba said quietly, kneeling down next to the bed besides the lump under the sheets. Kiba pulled the covers back, and silently stroked the young blonde's hair. "You know I wouldn't leave you." He smiled calmly.

Nozomi just shook his head in utter and total doubt. He was already sure that Kiba would leave one day. Mother had left even though she said she wouldn't. He could still remember that day just a few months ago, but it seemed like it had happened only yesterday.

"Guess what, Zomi! You won't have to stay in the hospital anymore," Mother had said, and it had Nozomi interested in hearing more. She smiled the way she always then, and nothing could go wrong. "I'm finally going to be able to adopt you."

Nozomi tilted his head a little and just shook his head. It's been many years, Mother. What makes you think you'll be able to adopt me now? he had written. Of course, it was a joking kind of writing, and he had even put a smiling face next to the end of the sentence.

"If you don't believe me, then I might as well leave," Mother merely replied. It was quite obvious that she was using her playful tone once again. They had never known what would happen once she left, so Nozomi wasn't scared of being left alone at that time.

"Nozomi, if you don't trust me that much, what do I have to do so that you trust me?" Kiba asked, pulling the younger boy from underneath the covers. "If you want me to kiss you again, I will." He said, a small smile crossing his features.

A nurse came in after a while, asking if Kiba wanted any food brought up, but the young man merely pointed to the trays on the table and the nurse left. "By the way, I'm thinking of teaching you sign-language. It's easier than writing everything down. Want to learn?"

Nozomi wrote on his notepad, answering that he didn't know what Kiba could do to gain his trust. It has been such a long and hopeless time that he didn't know how someone can prove to him that they are trustworthy. In that case, what can he do since Kiba seemed to really want to earn his trust?

When the volunteer had mentioned something about teaching him sign language, Nozomi nodded quite excitedly. Maybe it would be a little better than writing and having to rest from aches in his hands. It seemed like it would be worth a try.

Kiba smiled slightly, knowing full well that it would take a lot for somebody who had been shunned from society to trust someone from society. But he was quite excited that Nozomi was ready to learn sign-language. It may be easier, but it would take a long time to learn.

"Well, there are two easy ones that you should start off with." The young man began, raising his hand above the bed. "The first one is 'thank you'. You take your hand, put it at your mouth and move it forward." Kiba began. "The second one," he said, pulling Nozomi's face closer to his, gently kissing him on the lips, "is 'I love you.'"

Nozomi immediately blushed once more and he looked away. Maybe writing everything down is a better idea, he wrote, completely embarrassed. I don't think I'll be able to remember every sign anyway. Actually, he didn't want anything else strange to happen. The sudden kiss already made Nozomi want to quit learning.

Why did Kiba kiss him? They had only known each other for a day, so this wasn't right, is it? Kiba should be kissing a girl, not a boy living in the hospital. It was just strange. And what about any passersby that may have walked by the room? A new rumor might spread through the hospital then.

Kiba just looked at Nozomi, like kissing somebody that he barely knew was an okay thing. In reality, he was pretty much sure that it wasn't, but he was just fooling around. He didn't mean to make Nozomi give up learning sign language.

"Nozomi, I was just kidding, don't get so flustered." Kiba smiled slightly, although he knew that the boy was incredibly embarrassed. "The sign for 'I love you' is this, anyway. It's a joke we play in my family, you know? I know you didn't think it was funny..." Kiba sighed, making a sign with his hand.

But I'm not part of your family, Nozomi wrote, still blushing. It's not a funny thing to do to a stranger. On the contrary, many people call it sexual harrassment. For some reason, he felt a little sad... almost as if he had wished the kiss wasn't a joke. Even now his heart was pounding so quickly, so loudly.
