"That's a wonderful idea," Cindy agreed.
She had thought about taking Vergil with her when she did her research, but if she could let him stay with someone that would be better. Then he wouldn't be completely alone while she was gone.
"Do you know where she would be at this moment?"

Amdir thought about it. "Try behind the barracks," he suggested, "Halmir might be training with her back there. If not, she might be with the horses ... and if she's not there, try at home, I think Alyse was talking about starting on her garden soon, and Jasmine was eager to help with that."
He looked down at Vergil, who was still talking to the horse. "Sorry, Vergil," he said apologetically, "I have to get back to training the horse. But you can come back again often, I'm sure."
Vergil looked up at Amdir, his expression blank. He kept stroking the horse's nose. "Yeah?"

"Yes, you can come back another time," Cindy added, "Let's go find Jasmine, she's probably... closest to your age in I think...."
Of course it was hard to put an age on a Second, but Seconds she found were like young children.
"So let's go find her alright? Amdir has to get back to work."

Vergil smiled and nodded, and he patted the horse one last time before turning back to Cindy and holding his arms up to her.
"Okay," he agreed. "Bye, Amdir!"
Amdir chuckled. "See you, Vergil. Bye for now, Cindy." And he turned and led the horse back into the ring.

"See you later," Cindy waved a bit as she held Vergil before heading to the barracks.
It was one of the places she didn't visit that often, but then again how often was it she visited the Ranch when she was doing research and far away from the Ranch.

Vergil made himself comfortable in Cindy's arms once more and looked around, his eyes wide. "What's that place?" he asked, pointing at the barracks. "It's bigger than the house!"
And he had thought the house was huge!

"This is the barracks where the fighters that are hired live," Cindy replied, "Well them and their families if they have any."
Though only two of their fighters ever married from what she could recall and no one else seemed interested, but there was always that choice.

"Fighters?" Vergil perked up, excited by the prospect. "Are there a lot of fighters here, too? What do they do? Where do they fight? Why are there fighters on a horse place? Do the horses fight, too?"
He hadn't expected fighters to be here, not with the first impressions he had gotten - people with books and working with horses and such.

"It's for the Ranch's protection, we live out in the middle of nowhere," Cindy replied, "And there are sometimes not nice people out there, or animals."
Though people was more of what they were worried about and Cindy wasn't quite ready to explain to Vergil to concept of slavery not when they were close to wiping it out.
"Horses do not fight but they are here for transportation."

"Transportation?" Vergil questioned. "What does that mean? That they do more than just go around in circles like Amdir was making it do? What's that all about, anyways? It seemed a little silly to me ..."
Not that he knew anything about the matter, really.

"That's how he trains them to take commands," Cindy explains, "People can ride on horses to take them to other places it's faster than walking and sometimes that's needed."
Though she couldn't quite explain the whole process.

"I see," Vergil murmured thoughtfully. "Why does the horse listen to him? Isn't it bigger and stronger than him? I mean, it's not very nice to make him run around in circles like that ..."
He climbed up and peered over Cindy's shoulder, watching the horse as they got further away from it.

"Well... it's just in the nature of a horse to be able to be trained in a particular way," Cindy tried to explain.
She found it harder to explain that horses weren't that bright of a creature, true they were bright, but they were animals. It was hard for her, who grew up around very intelligent animals to explain this concept.

Vergil blinked up at Cindy. "They want to be treated like that?" he asked incredulously. "Why? Who would want to be pushed around and always told what to do?"
What kind of animal was like that? That was just crazy!

"Actually I think Admir is quite nice about it," Cindy replied softly, "But while they're told want to do, they're also well taken care of. They are fed, they have a warm place to sleep, it's clean, they're brushed and no one hurts them."
She knew for a fact one of the reasons why he got the job was because he could train horses without laying a hand on them.
