Nehanda wrinkled her nose at the bathtub. "Dun wanna baff," she told Foenix quite seriously. "Wanna pway outside more!"
Foenix hid her grin, as she always seemed to these day, and returned the serious look. "Entire sentences, please, Nehanda. Do you remember what we discussed?"
The Aerandir child sighed heavily and raised her shoulders. It was hard to make all the words come out right! "I'm not weady for my baff, Momma. The water's too hot! I wanna go pway wiff my pwants some more. Pwease?"
It was hard to deny those big blue eyes anything. Foenix shook her head and gestured toward the door. "I'm not going to heat the water up again, Nehanda. It takes a lot of work these days. You can go play, but you'll have to take a cold bath later. Is that a good compromise?"
Nehanda nodded. "Good compw . . . compo . . ."
"Compromise," the human repeated.
"Compwemise." Nehanda giggled and ran awkwardly out through the door. Seconds later, the front door clattered open and shut.
Foenix wasn't worried about the little girl. Nehanda knew not to leave the yard without one of the adults (Foenix herself or Kylara) and would probably not even leave her gardens unless she decided that they needed more water from the pond. And this would give her a little free time for some of her own work.
Outside, Nehanda reached under the porch and pulled out one of Foenix's books. She knew that her guardian didn't like the expensive gardening books to leave the house, but this was important! Sitting down beside her plants with a plop, Nehanda opened the book and began to leaf through the pages. Every now and then, she'd look up and compare an image on a page to the plants beside her.
Those yucky bugs were still there. They were slowly eating away at many of the more tender shoots and stemlings. Early on, Nehanda had tried eating one. After all, they had tasted pretty good when she was a gryphon . . .
Of course, she had immediately spat them out. Ugh! It was all sour and bitter, and the many tiny legs felt icky on her tongue.
But she still wasn't able to figure out what they were, or how to get rid of them. Nehanda was determined to solve this problem on her own. And . . . that was difficult when she had yet to learn the last ten letters of the alphabet.
She sighed and continued to compare bugs to pictures. Surely she'd come across the correct one eventually.

"ZZZZZZZeeeeeee! Wheeeeeeeeee!!!!!!" Nehanda's happy little voice rang up through the levels of the house. Foenix stopped what she was doing and shook her head with a rueful smile. The aerandir child had conquered her final letter of the alphabet today, and was understandably excited. It was a pretty momentous event for the little household. Even if her very vocal expression of that excitement made it rather difficult for Foenix to work . . . With a wry chuckle, the woman reached out and nudged the door to her office closed with one foot. Let Kylara and the rest deal with the happy little girl for just one hour. Foenix was determined to get through at least a few items on her To-Do list. She grabbed up Nehanda's journal and opened it. Number 1 on that list was to return to her formerly excellent entry habits. The past few weeks had simply been so busy . . . But that was no excuse to ignore her duties . . . Quote: 5.10.05 Well, Nehanda finished learning the alphabet today! I'm so proud of her. She's already started putting together rudamentary words, and comprehending the difference between vowels and consonants, and such things. I just know that she'll be reading and writing in no time! Aside from that, she continues to be a very cheerful little child. I really need to find some time to drag her away from her plants to play with the others, though. Anti-social behavior is certainly not something I want to foster at such an early age. (Evening) Primrose [Cenothera biennis] The generic name is derived from oinos (wine) and thera (a hunt), and is an old Greek name given by Theophrastus to some plant, probably an Epilobium, the roots of which were eaten to provoke a relish for wine, as olives are now; others say it dispelled the effects of wine. The large, bright yellow, fragrant flowers are mostly fertilized by twilight-flying insects, especially in the early season. Later the plants keep 'open house' practically all day. In America it is considered a troublesome pest; in England it is not formidable. The roots of the Evening Primrose are eaten in some countries in the spring, and the French often use it for garnishing salads.
The Primrose serves as an astringent and sedative. The drug extracted from this plant, though not in very general use, has been tested in various directions, and has been employed with success in the treatment of gastro-intestinal disorders of a functional origin, asthma and whooping cough.
It has proved of service in dyspepsia, torpor of the liver, and in certain female complaints, such as pelvic fullness. The dose ranges from 5 to 30 grains.
Henslow mentions another species, Cenothera odorata, which he states is found wild in the south of England, but only as a garden escape. It grows to 2 feet in height, with purplish stems and yellow flowers, 3 to 4 inches across. They are sweet-smelling, hence its specific name.
In The Treasury of Botany a large whiteflowered species is also mentioned, said to have run wild over some parts of the Nilghiri Hills in India.

Nehanda wiggled her little body beneath the overgrown bushes. There was a pretty flower under there, and she wanted it for Foenix!
Mommy-Foenix had been really tired lately. She said she was just really busy, but Nehanda thought she looked sick. So she'd spent the past week trying really, really hard to be really, really good.
Being good was hard sometimes.
She grunted as she gave one last wriggle of her knees and stretched forward just enough to get her fingers around the flower as she continued to think about current events of the household. Foenix had walked into the house last night, chattering about another of the Aerandir. Apparently, Luc had transformed into a child. That was exciting, because now 'Handa would have someone else to play with. And Foenix would hopefully have some free time now so that she could go find Luc.
Nehanda pulled herself out from beneath the bush with a happy grin, flower clenched gently in her fist. It was bright purple, and there were lots of petals. The stem was kind of scratchy, though. It was a bloom that she didn't recognize from any of her books. So, it would make mommy-Foenix happy, and she would help 'Handa look it up. Yay!
"Nehanda! Sweetie, where are you? It's time for lunch!"
Foenix's voice rang out through the backyard, and Nehanda pushed herself around on her knees. Lunch! Yummy!
"Comin', Feenis!" she clambered to her feet, and ran wobbily toward the porch.

Kylara looked up from her paws and squinted down the path. That head of red hair looked awfully familiar . . .
The Jivvin jumped to her feet a moment later and began to sprint down the path. *Foenix! Nehanda! You're home! You're finally home! We've missed you so much!*
Foenix dropped her bags and laughed as the eager Jivvin creature bounded up the path and into her open arms. "Kylara! Yes, we're home. And I missed you, too."
Next to them, Nehanda danced in place, eager for her own hug. "'Lara! Me an' Feenis went evywhere! An' we saw lots'a people, and awl these reawy, reawy big fwowers, an' it was so much fun!"
Foenix had to laugh as Kylara obligingly transferred her eager hug into one far more gentle for the little Aerandir child. "Yes, it was certainly quite a trip. And we've got stories and presents for everyone, so why don't we take this inside? I know that I, for one, would be much more comfortable sitting down."
At her direction, they all took up some of the baggage, and headed back toward the house, where the rest of their motley family was happily waiting.

Foenix flopped back in her seat, quite happy to be home. Traveling was always fun, but there was simply nothing as exciting and comforting as walking back into your own house, with your own furniture, food, family . . . She glanced down at the journal in her lap. She had neglected to bring the book with her on their travels, and so it had not been updated for quite some time. But that was okay, really. She had all the time in the world now. Quote: 6.05.05 Well, Nehanda and I returned recently from nearly a month of traveling. We went all over, and saw red-wood trees so large it takes ten people with arms outstretched to go around them. We saw flora and fauna of every possible sumptuous shade and hue, and smelled scents so divine that I could have sat beside the flowers forever. But for now, it's just good to be home. Nehanda's growing like a weed, and her intelligence is more then keeping up with her body. She's started to write, even if her words have a little trouble staying in the same line . . . And she can read! 'Handa still have trouble with larger words, but she's definitely getting there. And, not surprisingly, Nehanda has spent most of her time since we got back out in the gardens. I know that the rest of the family worked hard to keep them in good shape, but Nehanda has some work ahead of her. I suppose that the rest of us simply don't have the same love of plants that she does. But I'm sure that Nehanda will have everything back to their usual lush state within no time. Outside, Nehanda sat amidst her plants, carefully studying the stems, leaves and blossoms that had grown so rapidly in her absence. Those bugs were still there, but now that she could read . . . sort of . . . she could probably find the answer for herself. In fact . . . she remembered Alyosha once telling Foenix that he had all sorts of books. Perhaps he'd have something to help her? Nehanda looked down the path that she knew led toward the Community Centre and Aly's suite.. She'd gone there several times with Foenix. So why couldn't she go on her own? The little Aerandir's forehead creased in thought.

((Quoted from the PM sent to Kami)) Foenix followed Nehanda as the Aerandir child ran eagerly up the path to Kami's house. "Wait up, sweetie!" The little girl turned and looked over her should at the red-haired woman. "Huwwy up, Fweenix! We gots to give Keanu his teefs!" Nehanda was nearly jumping up and down with excitement and impatience. After all, this was a life and death situation! Keanu was going to turn into a kid! "I'm coming!" Foenix laughed. Actually, she was rather proud of the teeth she had culled out of the large collection of Rani's left-overs. It was a matched set of canines and incizers from some carniverous beast. they were all ebony-black, and the larger pair was easily as long as Nehanda's outstretched hand. After she had carefully cleaned and polished them, they gleamed softly in the light. She hastened her pace and soon caught up to her Aerandir charge, and the two continued along the path to Kami's. Upon reaching the porch, Nehanda ran up the steps and knocked on the door. With a little pout, she turned after a few minutes. "I don't tink dey're home. Nobody's comin' to the door." "Well, let's hang these up where they're be sure to find them, okay?" Foenix picked Nehanda up and lifted the little girl until she could hook the suede baggie of teeth over the doorway. There, the teeth would be safe, and they certainly couldn't be missed. After that, the two turned and headed back home, satisfied with the delivery of their gift.

Having just delivered a set of her old bangles to Inle and her gryphon, Marli, Foenix was taking her time getting back home. It was a pleasant day, just this side of chilly, and the sunlight felt very good against the back of her neck.
As she walked up the pathway that approached her cabin, Foenix heard loud squeals that sounded both excited and a little scared. Hastening her step, Foenix soon broke into the clearing around the house.
Nehanda was swimming (although clumsy dog-paddling might be closer to the truth) around in the pond out front. Kylara sat at the edge, while Cira and Zimra were both in the water with the Aerandir child. It was evident that the Equus was there soley for Nehanda's safety.
"And isn't this a surprise!" Foenix approached the pond and placed her hands on her hips. "Nehanda, didn't we have a talk about going into the water?" Try though she might, it was difficult to keep a grin from her face.
*Don't be grumpy, Foenix. We've all been here in case she had any trouble.* Kylara jumped to her feet and trotted over to the human woman. The Jivvin looked rather smug. *Besides, the kid's a natural. We only had to fish her out a few times before she caught the hang of swimming.*
Foenix sighed and shook her head. "I suppose there's just no arguing with any of you-"
"Fweenix!" Nehanda interrupted. "I's is swimmin'! It's fun!" She cut off and bobbled as, in her distraction, she stopped paddling and slipped under the water's surface. She emerged only a second later, sputtering, but with a happy smile.
Foenix sighed. "Oh, that does it." Quickly, she stripped down to sports-bra and underpants, and ran into the water. What better way to spend the afternoon then swimming with her kids?

"No! Nononononononononoooooo!" Nehanda threw herself down on the ground beside her garden and began to sob, scream, and beat little fists and feet into the ground. Tears slipped down her normaly sunny cheeks, and dirt quickly coated her pelt.
In short, the child was throwing a very vocal temper tantrum.
Foenix placed her hands upon her hips and sighed down at the little girl. "Nehanda, you can cry all you like, but I still want you to finish your lessons." Over the past week, the Aerandir child had taken to stealing outside to her plants, or wandering about in the woods behind the house when she was supposed to be studying.
The whole cry-and-scream thing was a new one, however.
"I don' wanna wead da stupid books! I hate books! I hate you! Wanna work in da gawden!" Nehanda looked up briefly, her cheeks smudged with dirt and tears, cute lips turned down in a shaky pout.
She couldn't understand why Foenix was being so mean! She didn't need to know adding and subtracting, or stupid run-on sentences, any of that dumb stuff to work with her plants. Vegetables didn't care if you knew what 5 x 7 was, and and a comma couldn't make a flower bloom.
Lessons were stupid, stupid, stupid.
Still, she could tell that her crying wasn't going to soften Foenix, and let her play outside. Besides, beating her feet like that in the dirt was hurting her hoof-toes. So she sat up and wiped her eyes, creating even larger smears of dirt across her cheeks. "Don' like my stoopid books," she mumbled.
Foenix bit back a groan. Patience, she reminded herself. You needed patience by the bucketload to deal with any child, and Nehanda was no different.
"Nehanda, we made a deal, remember? You spend your mornings inside, with your studies, and then you can spend your afternoons outside in the garden. Come on, sweetie, I thought it was a pretty good deal!"
Nehanda looked at her toes and shrugged. "Don' wanna."
The woman sighed. "Tough." Reaching down, she scooped Nehanda up and held the child firmly, mindful of delicate feathers and bone structure. "We're going inside, and you are going to finish your multiplication tables. And you're going to learn five more vocabulary words. And after lunch, I'll let you come outside."
She turned and began walking toward the house without giving Nehanda a chance to respond.
The Aerandir swirmed and wiggled, but Foenix was too used to her movements to be fooled into loosening her gentle-yet-firm grip. With a sniffle, Nehanda gave up and allowed herself to be carried inside to the hated lessons.

Foenix stepped back from the desk and patted Nehanda, who was perched on the edge of a high stool, on the head. "There you go, sweetie. Do you understand how everything works?" The little girl nodded her head, and waved vaguely toward the door. "'M okay, Fweenix. Go 'way! I can do dis. I can do it mysewlf." She returned her full attention to the computerized journal in front of her and stared at the keyboard." Foenix struggled to stifle her chuckle. Strong-willed? Yes. Independantly minded? Hell yeah. Hadn't someone warned her about this? "Okay. But call me if you need anything, all right? I'll send Kylara in when dinner's ready." She stepped backwards through the doorway of her study and closed the door behind her. Nehanda studied the screen. Foenix had already entered the date for her, because she wasn't so good that that stuff yet. But she knew all of her letters now, and she was getting better at spelling. So Foenix had told her all about the journal she was supposed to be keeping, and offered Nehanda a chance to type out an entry. Quote: 7.15.05 Hi Jornal! My name's NEHANDA. I'm the Aerandir that Feenix rites about. So, I gess this is my jornal to. And she said I can rite anything I want to in here. I like that. I like plants. Feenix has done a lot of riting about plants in here and she read some of the stuff to me. I gess wen I get a litle bigger, I can rite plant stuff in here to. But rite now, I wanna rite abot the SUMMER FESTIVAL I went to. Feenix showed me how to spell FESTIVAL before we went. She says its like a grate big party, and its usuly outside and stuff. We got to on the fery to the other iland! I liked the fery. The water was prety, and the air smelled reelly good. I hope we get to go on the water more. Ther were lots of tents at the festival. And ther were lots of peeple I didn't nowe, and ther were also new grifons. 3 of them cam out of ther jars. Feenix says thats were I cam from befor I was a grifon but I dont remember. I dont see how I fit into a little jar like that! I must have been real sqashed! But I wasnt so interesteed in the grifons. Cause I met a new frend! Her names Delta and she lives here on Ketaloo. Feenix says that shes part peekok. Shes gonna show me a pictoor of a peekok later. I dont know what it is, but I bet its prety. Deltas onli a little smaller then I was wen I was a grifon. We sat down and I got to pet Delta. She evin sat in my lap! I liked that. It tikled. I thot we culd play, but I dont think Delta wanted to. So we sat and I talked and petted her. Her mommy came and sed they had to go, but I can play with Delta later. I like that. It makes me happy. And Delta liked my super cape! I think I want a difrent one, tho. The old one had blu and orang. I dont think I like orang so much. Then we came home, and Feenix shoed me how to use the computer to rite in the jornal! She sas if Im good, I can rite in it evry day. And I like that. "Nehanda?" Kylara opened the door and poked her head in. the Jivvin prefered to use her human form when around her family. It made communication so incredibly much easier, after all. "Foenix has dinner almost ready. How's the journal entry?""Entwy?" Nehanda looked away from the screen and screwed up her little face in confusion. "What's dat? I'm writin' in de journal." Kylara laughed. "That's exactly what an entry is, sweetie. When you write in your journal, you're making a journal entry." She came in and glanced at the screen. "My, you've written an aweful lot. Are you ready for a break? I bet you're hungry."Nehanda tilted her head from side to side. Foenix didn't like it when she wouldn't come to the dinner table. "'Kay. I'm comin'." She hit the keys that Foenix had said would save her writing, and clambered down from the stool. Reaching up and taking the Jivvin's hand in hers, the Aerandir ran out of the room.

Foenix hummed as she stood over the chopping board. Preparing meals for her family always relaxed her. The process of delicately slicing vegetables, sauteing meat, adding spices . . . it was a soothing combination so very different from the rest of her daily activities.
"Fweenix, I gots herbs! I gots 'em for de soup!" Nehanda ran in through the door, waving two large handfuls of plant stalks over her head. the little girl quickly clambered up onto the stepstool and dumped her offering next to the cutting board.
"Wonderful, honey! Let's see what you've got." Foenix had decided that, since she spent so much time with the plants, that Nehanda should be allowed to help with that aspect of meals. She had asked the child to fetch some spicy herbs, some smoother, but had not made any specifications.
Nehanda grinned and wiggled on her stool as the auburn-haired woman crossed to see what she had brought. After a moment of sorting through the stems and leaves, however, Foenix looked up in confusion. "Nehanda, do you really think these will go well together?" She help up some ginger root, sprigs of watercress, a few jalepenos, and a slice of sugar cane. There was also fresh oregano and basil, dill, and . . . cocoa beans?
Not precisely a tempting combination.
Foenix quickly glanced over at the rest of Nehanda's herbs and spices, and bit her lip silently. Okay, so cooking might not be one of the Aerandir's talents. She creased her forehead in confusion. It just didn't make any sense. Nehanda seemed to know instinctively what plants to use when they were trying out potions and other healthy messes. So why couldn't she pick out a few herbs that would smell good together?
Turning, Foenix pasted a smile on her face. "Tell ya what, Nehanda. I bet Kylara could use some help setting the table. Could you do that for me? It's kind of hard, because you have to set up your silverware just right . . ." She trailed off, and looked doubtful, as though she wasn't sure Nehanda could handle it.
"I c'n do it! I c'n hewlp!" Nehanda scrambled down and scurried over to the table. Foenix shortly heard the sounds of forks and knives clinking loudly as the girl tossed them about haphazardly, followed quickly by Kylara's long-suffering sighs as she fixed the mess.
With a grin, Foenix turned back to her dinner and began sorting out what she could actually use in her stir-fry. One thing was for sure. She wouldn't be able to count on Nehanda's herbal help with dinner.

Quote: 8.07.05 Goodness, how fast the time goes! It seems like only yesterday I was looking forward to the beginning of summer . . . Nehanda has been such a good little girl over the past week or so. I think we've finally come to an agreement over her lessons. While she doesn't like being confined to the house, I think she realizes how important a book-oriented education is to me. We spend the mornings, when it is still nice and pleasant outside, working in her gardens or strolling about the islands. Once the afternoon heat sets in, he head indoors for lesson time. I don't think Nehanda will ever be terrifically good at math, but she's a whiz at reading comprehension. I think that one reason she's so eager to read well is the bookcase full of gardening and herbal books I have in my office. She enjoys reading those just as much as she enjoys reading the fairy tales and fantasy books I give her! Nehanda's handwriting, however . . . needs some work. But hey. It hasn't even been a full 4 months since I brought Nehanda-the-child home with me! I know I still tend to think of her as humanoid, but she's not even a full year old! Once you look at it that way, her intelligence and other abilities are amazing.

((Events backdated to Thursday, August 11.)) "Come on! Comeoncomeoncomeon!!!" Nehanda was practically dancing in place by the front door. "Hold your horses, sweetie! I just need to fold this . . ." Foenix looked over from the kitchen counter, where she was trying to fold a piece of ivory cloth. The blue and teal beads that covered it made the fabric heavy, and the satiny weave made it even harder to keep everything from sliding around. "Even if I've never met this girl, I still want her present to lok nice." "Wessons are finis'ed! We goin' to Dewta's house!" Nehanda crowed in excitement. The math problems Foenix had assigned her that morning had been particularly hard, and she really wanted the promised trip. Ever since their meeting at the Summer Festival, Nehanda had wanted to spend some more time with Delta, the lovely peacock gryphon. And since the gryphon had so admired her dishcloth/cape, Nehanda wanted to give this new friend one of her own. "Okay! All finished. Let's get going." Foenix tucked the neat bundle into her bag, and hurried toward the door. "Wet's get goin'!" Nehanda echoed. "Dewta's gonna wike her cape! An' it's gonna wook weally pwetty on her!" "I'll take your word on it, hun. You picked out the fabric!" With a laugh, Foenix pulled open the front door and ushered her charge outside.
