Lee gave him a look of doubt, clearly still thinking that something was wrong. If he wanted to lie to her, fine. She wouldn't ask anymore. Her head turning away and averting her eyes, she continued on, though not wanting to walk side by side at the moment.

Rory didn't like lying to the girl, but he was pretty sure she'd act like everyone else if she knew the truth. He looked down at her, noticing she was a few steps behind and stopped, frowning a bit. "What, lass?"

Lee continued walking and shrugged. "Nothing wrong. Just wish you'd tell me the truth..." While she certainly could have been a bit more tactful about it, she couldn't help but be less-than-pleasant about it. It stung, being lied to by Rory.

The boy looked around a moment, then pulled her into a small alleyway between tents. "Alright, th' truth is this: what they say about me is true." He figured it might as well come out now so she could leave before he got anymore attached. "I'm a freak, okay? I really do see th' dead. Can hear 'em, too."

Lee's mouth fell open a bit as Rory explained, almost dropping her bear from the shock of it. What they'd said had been true? She didn't even think such a thing was possible, that stories of the dead haunting the living were just tales meant to scare the gullible. Searching his face, she tried to find something to say. "W-why didn't you tell me sooner?" Her voice was low, almost inaudible over the sound of the crowd beside them. She felt terrible; she'd told him it was stupid to think he could see the dead, and it turned out it was true. Had she, in some way, insulted him by saying that?

"Because you'll leave," Rory said softly, looking down. "You'll treat me like all them others do."

Her face quickly grew concerned, and she stepped closer, bending down at bit so he was somewhat forced to see her. "No! I wouldn't--!" She reached out to grab his hand. "I dun think your a freak or whatever. I'd never..." And she really wouldn't. Heck, Rhian could make cotton candy out of nothing; that was more creepy than this. Perhaps being around essentics so often made her immune to finding such things unusual. "You... dun have to hide stuff like that from me... I like you. More than you think." For once she could say that without blushing.

Rory sat down on a crate nearby and looked up at her. "Really? Most people tha' ain't in my family think it's just creepy. Keagan, Fao, an' some o' them on the council donnae think much o' it, but the others . . ." He shrugged. "I thought you'd react e'en more to it, havin' been an outsider."

Okay, so the dead themselves were creepy, sure, but Rory wasn't. "Really, it doesn't matter to me..." Walking closer and sitting on the ground next to him, she looked at her knees before biting her lip and asking, "Could I... ask you something?" She didn't want to push something that he didn't want to talk about, so she figured she should make sure he was alright with it. She suddenly felt horribly guilty for keeping a secret of her own; the problem was, it wasn't her secret to tell him. It was Banning's and, partly, Lauss'.

"Ask anythin' you want. I donnae wanna keep secrets from you, girl," Rory said, looking visibly relieved that the weight was off his chest now.

Lee fidgeted with her teddy bear once more, still looking down. "It's not... so much that. I just... was wondering... is it scary? Seeing them?"

"Sometimes, but I been seein' 'em since I wis a bairn, so I've gotten used t' it now," he answered, shrugging a bit. "Does it scare you tha' I can see 'em?"

Lee bit her lip before shrugging. "... No. But... there aren't any around right now, are there?" Just the thought of it was enough to make her hair stand on end. She felt the urge to crawl into his lap for some kind of safety.

Rory looked about, seeing the ghost of a woman standing just by the entrance of the little alley. "Nae, lass. There ain't any here. They donnae come around as oft' as people think."

Lee sighed with relief, pushing herself off the ground and standing over him. "Tell me when you see one, though..." Sure, she'd be scared, but she'd know when to hide. Somehow, she really wasn't very affected by everything she'd heard, and while her curiosity was peaked, she would wait until later to ask anything else. "Still hungry?" She knew better than to try to lift him again, and instead just motioned for him to stand.
