"Not today." Aubrey said, quietly leaving room for other days to make pies into dinners.
Giving a shrug with as much flair as a shrug could take, he kept silent. He had every intention of buying her something that she wanted. He just needed to save some coins for buying dinner. He strolled after the teen, keeping a parental eye on her while doing some of his own stall scanning.

"Fine." she stuck her tongue at him.
Mattie saw some necklaces and rings, but she didn't find those too appealing. They seemed so...not her. Well, Aimee would probably like them, but the teen didn't think about her anymore. Today was Papa-gets-Mattie-something-nice-day. Now that she thought about it, she didn't have much material possessions. She only had a worn piece of rabbit fur and the small yellow centauress doll that Aubrey had given her.
Hm...

Aubrey pretended not to see the tongue come out. Today was not the day to be scolding for that.
Passing the jewelry after his daughter, he paused a second to look without realizing it. Unfortunatly, all that Aimee talk had gotten thoughts of the pretty female stuck in the back corner of his mind, lingering around the edges. Once he noticed he was falling back, he quickly trotted to leave the stall, his neck warmed slightly.
"Here's a thought. Would you want something just for fun, to play with, or would you want something practical that you would use?"

Mattie blinked, coming back to earth. "Hm? What?" she looked at him, "Ah. I don't mind anything really. I'm not too sure what I like." she continued to look around and spotted something red. Moving closer to the stall, she realized it was an oven mitt.
The teen picked it up, turning it over in her hands, looking at the small strawberries stitched onto one side. Mattie smiled, putting it on her right hand.
"Papa. What do you think of this?" she held it up for him to see.

Aubrey cocked his head, at first surprised. "You want an oven mitt?" He plucked it off her hand, holding it up and taking a close look. If he had been a mother, he would have felt like crying. Mattie wanted cooking supplies!
"It looks like a fine mitt. Very fine." He said, handing it back and ruffling her hair. "You had a good eye for that. If you want, I'll get it for you."

"It's cute." she flipped her covered hand over to examine it a little more. "See?" her finger rested on the stitched fruit, "There are strawberries on it! Cute right?"
Mattie's ears perked up, a big smile on her face, "Really? You would get such a random item as this for me?"

Aubrey nodded at the strawberries. "Random? This is no simple random item! An oven mitt is a very important thing to have for those of us who cook, or wish to cook." His last word had a slightly questioning tone. Did Mattie actually want to use it, or did she want the mitt because she thought it was "cute"? "And yes, I would get it for you, if you really want it."

"Ah..." Mattie laughed nervously, "I've never really cooked before..." as sad as it was, it was the truth. The most she had really done was eat cooked food. Palladia had never let her hold a knife or try and bake for fear of Matilda hurting herself.
It was a shame, considering Aubrey loved to cook.

Aubrey nearly fainted. He had always let Mattie help him cook, but he hadn't realized that he'd never actually let her do much more than stir things. Apparently, neither had her mother. His own daughter! Nearly grown! Had never cooked!
"Well," He said when he could talk again. "Now that you have an oven mitt, you will be able to cook with me." He started getting excited by the idea. "We can make dinner tonight together." He counted a few coins out of his bag and handed them to Mattie. "Go ahead and pay for it."

"Papa...are you alright?" Mattie peered at him, "You look a little...pale..." she knew this would probably kill him. Ahh...her poor father. She took the coins with her free hand, and grinned, "Alright." she placed the coins in the vendor's hand, without thinking twice, thanking him profusely, "Thanks Papa!" she exclaimed, hugging him. She put the away the mitt in her bag, not wanting it to get dirty.

Aubrey shook his head to clear it once more, then nodded. He'd survive, now that he knew he would be able to save his little girl from her lack of cooking. Happy that he had counted the money out before handing it over, he readily hugged Mattie back. Then he looked at the sky.
"Unless you can think of anything else you'd like, we can either buy our dinner fixings now and go for the dessert when we're done, or get dessert now and come back to buy the food afterward."

"Not really no." Mattie looked to him, "Is there anything you need?"
"It might be better to buy our stuff first then come back." she thought. "It might not be a good idea to carry that dessert around all day..."

Aubrey shook his head. "Just dinner, but that makes sense still." He smiled. "We would eat the dessert at the tavern, then buy the dinner and take it straight home. I thought you might like to see Aimee a bit more if she's still there." He hoped Aimee might give Mattie an idea of what a sane female adult was like. Her mother wasn't about to do that for her.

"Hm." Mattie tapped her chin, wondering if she wanted to eat the dessert and have more later, or eat it at home with a bunch of other desserts. But at the mention of Aimee, Mattie tumbled out of her thoughts, grinning mischievously, "Are you sure you don't want to see Aimee more?" so, it was just a ploy for Aubrey to see the female that he liked so much. She decided she would just play along. Papa needed someone too anyways.

Aubrey set his shoulders to keep the flush from his face, seeing the sly smirk and knowing what was coming. "I always like seeing Aimee. She's a good friend to have." He let himself relax when the moment passed. "Besides, I thought you might like to see her again. She seemed to warm to you before. So, dessert at the tavern or are we taking it home?"
