If Tanto were still able to cry, he almost surely would have as the Watcher spoke. Memories, brief flashes of his time spent at Lucifer's side, played through his mind. He could not grasp the memories and knew that soon he would forget again, but he knew that these were his memories - of that he was positive.
"Thank you, Watcher," he said when he composed himself. "Is there anything else you can tell us before we go in? I am sure we'll be maintaining communication as we go.

"I advise you most of all to be cautious." The Watcher paused, then added, "The Devourer is a powerful undead and the energies released by the malfunctioning seal on the Cypher have both attracted other such creatures and amplified their power."
With that, they descended.
The staircase brought them to a cross of hallways, marked with ornate characters - Tanto recognized them as indicators of North, East, South, and West. The Western hallway had an elaborate gateway and led deep into darkness, far beyond the apparent border of the tower from outside; the others were without ornamentation and led to apparent dead ends, with a perfectly still body pinned to each of the walls at the ends.

Tanto looked North, East, and South, regarding the bodies pinned to the wall thoughtfully. An ominous sign, surely, but also one full of meaning. He probed the depths of the hallways, including the West, with his Third Eye, examining all around for any signs.

The bodies had a faint mana glow to them, but the majority of the place seems to be to the west, from which periodic pulses of mana would wash towards them. The pulses came rhythmically, with a strong one every second or so, followed by a weaker one, in a pattern reminiscent of a beating heart.

Tanto relayed this information to his underlings, counting the first few beats out loud so that everyone had a good idea of the timing in their head. If they paid attention, they would also be able to feel it. Tanto had an idea that keeping on top of this beat would be very important to them.
"Yarah, Ridley," he grumbled after a moment. "Examine the body to the South." He pointed with a flick of his head which body he was talking about. He began to walk to the North, presumably alone.

Yarah smirked lightly. "If you get your a** handed to you when I'm not around, don't blame me for not being there to heal you." He knew that wouldn't happen, but he wasn't just going to let the Demon-Major leave without some kind of parting shot. He started walking towards the body Tanto pointed out and muttered, "Let's see what we've got here..."

Yarah, as well as Ridley (who most definitely responded to Tanto's order/suggestion), made their way southward as Tanto headed North. As they came near, they heard a faint, disturbing whispered chant rasping around them.
"He waits, he watches, he listens, he learns, he waits, he watches, he listens, he learns...."
At first they thought the corpses were the source, but their mouths were not moving and the sounds seemed to be coming more from the walls than anywhere.

Tanto glanced around himself. When no obvious source of the voices presented itself, he shrugged and moved on. He had been fallen from Heaven to the Meteor Plains, and existed in Hell for a millennium and a half. Disembodied voices didn't scare him unless they acted somehow.
Upon reaching the body, Tanto again tried to scan it through both mundane and magical vision to learn what he could.

The bodies were perfectly preserved, its skin drawn tight over its bones. Whoever the bodies had come from, it seemed, they hadn't been very well-nourished. In fact, it was really only that they were permeated by the environment's mana, their own auras in no way present, that made it subconsciously obvious to the Confederation operatives that they were seeing corpses, not people. The northern one looked to be Scandinavian in descent, with fair skin and light hair; the southern body was dark of skin and hair. It seemed likely that they would find an Asian on the eastern wall if they looked.

"Is it just me or do the foreigners always die first?" Yarah muttered to himself. Oh well. At least he didn't have to try and heal something that couldn't be healed. When he heard the faint whispering, he cleaned out his ear. "Voices. Wonderful. And it's about a guy." Why couldn't it be about a woman? The voices did unnerve him slightly but that only made him focus more on his goal.
He walked over to the eastern wall and loudly described to Tanto the details of the body from the Southern wall. The hallways were short so there was no need to yell. "What kind of body do you see?" he asked the Demon-Major. He examined the eastern wall to see what he could piece together. Was there some significant reason these bodies were chosen to represent north, south, east, and west (other than racial significance)? He wanted to see if there was anything else the bodies held in common and that couldn't happen if he didn't look at the eastern hallway (and maybe look in the north if Tanto didn't tell him anything).

The eastern body was identical to the others in the primary respects, and the suspicion of a geographic connection between the pinned bodies and their locations in the cross area seemed likely as it was, indeed, a man of Oriental origin.

Yarah walked over to Tanto's area where the Demon-Major was just standing. Or maybe studying the body. Whatever. Once Yarah glanced at the Scandinavian body, he sighed and turned to the western hall. "Nothing so suspicious about these bodies. It is interesting to note the geographic link between the bodies and their places in these hallways...Hm. Let's go check out the western hallway."

Tanto observed everything about the body until he wasn't getting any more information out of it. It was pretty clear that they weren't going to be giving any useful information.
Shrugging, he followed after Yarah. If the other bodies also hadn't yielded any results, then perhaps the final body would. If not, then it was time to start breaking through walls.

Aside from the confirmation of the geographical suspicions (which, notably, were in relation to Jerusalem - suspected passing-point of the falling Lucifer and site of the most fertile and densely magical leyline in existence) the bodies yielded few secrets.

Interesting. Tanto acknowledged the connection - it made sense, anyway. Though it did add a bit more to the mystery of the place.
Tanto continued to walk down the western hallway, which didn't end in a dead body because a previous post said it went into the darkness.
