[[Sorry about the long hiatus guys. A busy holiday followed by a really depressing break-up kept me away longer than I anticipated.
Hiatus over if anyone wishes to continue this roleplay. ^_^]]

Raelise entered the garrison, but kept her hood up. Since it was difficult to find temperatures low enough to bother an elf, this was not because she was still cold; rather, it was because she wanted to take stock of those around her without standing out. She had arrived at the inn late, so late that it had actually been early, and hadn't yet had the opportunity to examine those who would be her companions. There was a paladin, a human woman, a small human girl, and what looked like another elf; she would have to watch for a bit longer if she wanted to discover anything besides those obvious truths.

The Garrison was abuzz with activity. All of the soldiers anticipating the mercenaries. Some were standing guard along the wall, others with moving tables and chairs around. Gerard Havicson was standing in the middle of the room, as the first group entered, he motioned toward the lieutenant at the corner, writing on a document on a desk while looking at what appeared to be a ledger.
[[Lol, congrats, you just chose the color of the Garrison interior. = P (I color code areas to prevent confusion.]]

Hope left the church having taken her leave of McFlaust. It was a beautiful morning! The crisp air, the glistening snow, an hour of worship, and a job ahead! What more could one ask for? She whistled and sang as she made her way towards the garrison.

Zywynran sat comfortably with a mug of mulled wine grasped between his slowly warming fingers. He sipped slowly of the warm liquid, but was more intent upon enjoying the scent of the spices within the cup. His eyes raised at the entry of an elven woman he did not know. The garrison was full of activity, but the woman was still noticeable. She did not really stand out in appearance as he and Beauty did; that was not what drew his eye. The way her body moved, the grace in her steps... it was almost ethereal. It was much like how his mother walked, but not quite the same. There was a restrained strength in those movements, akin to a prowling feline.

Raelise's skin pricked, and her attention shifted to the other elf. No--No, not an elf. It was clear that he was only a half-blood, now that she was really looking. Anyway, he had noticed her. That was not unexpected; those of elven decent were generally good at catching subtle differences in movement. Unfortunate, perhaps, but not unexpected. He appeared to be an entertainer of some sort, dressed in a bright, almost gaudy combination of colors that she had never seen on another elf, and covered in bells. The sheer novelty of the sight made an unspeakably rare, subdued smile curve at the corners of her mouth. Odd.

[[BTW, I find it unlikely that Azaurmyth will be returning to this RP, so, I am going to remove her from for a few days to see if she returns, if she does, her character will be staying at the inn.]]
Havicson, now noticing that some of the mercenaries have begun to assemble, turned to address the small crowd that has begun to gather.
"Please if you would, speak to the attendant in the corner, he putting the groups together, in threes. All of this has been based on the brief description of your abilities given to us when you signed up last night."
He nodded at the attendant at the desk, "Efter which, your current assignments will be dolled out. Please, do be quick about checking in, we would like to start these missions as soon as possible, the longer it takes, the less likely we are to find any of the missing villagers."

Ah, his attention had been noticed. And in truth, it had not been hidden, so that was only to be expected. Beneath her hood the woman's expression was obscured and he knew not her reaction to his gaze. All the same, he did know this; to act with chagrin upon being caught out would certainly only serve to cement any ill feeling. And so Zywanran smiled, politely saluting the stranger with raised mug. He said nothing to her, nor did he approach her. Ah, he might have were this a more social setting, but there were responsibilities for both of them to see to. It was a shame; he'd have liked to know the nature of such an elf. She of course had all the grace he would expect from her heritage, though even that bore an unusual quality, but none of the dress or mannerisms.
Zywynran dismissed these thoughts as best he could. Such a habit of his, always seeking to know more of people. But then, what good story lacked people? Who could enjoy a story that did not touch upon their own hopes and dreams or even, in some cases, their fears? Stories were built with people as the foundation; any storyteller ought to have a generous helping of curiosity in his fellow man. Or woman as the case may be. He rose from his seat to join the line forming in front of the attendant's table, still musing on his thoughts.

Raelise barely registered the movement that was the half-elf's salute out of the corner of her eye; Havicson had effectively and completely diverted her attention to other matters. She made her way over to stand at the back of the steadily growing line, carefully removing her cloak as she went. Any anonymity it had granted her would be gone in such close proximity to so many other people. Besides, it was dripping half-melted snow all over the floor.

More and more mercenaries began to line up, , while the entirety of the contingent was no more than 20, in the small rural barrack, it seemed quite the crowd. Eventually the pairings were made.
Hope, Zywynran, and Raelise were to Investigate the series of caves to the north of Dargon, the ones shunned by the locals as being haunted. The Steward laughed as he explained.
"Its not as if the caves are really haunted, the towns folk just think so because of the Giant Spiders." He snorted, "Giant, give me a break, they are only the size of a dog, now the ones the size of a horse you need to watch out for, but they haven't been seen around here."

One of Raelise's pale eyebrows slid upward by a hair, but otherwise she did not visibly react to either the orders or the description of the spiders. "Is there anything else about the terrain we should know?" she asked quietly. Her voice was musical, but was rendered less pleasant by a rusty edge of disuse.

The steward thought for a moment.
"No, not that I can think of . . . Oh right!" He rustled through a couple rolled up parchents, looking at the seals before picking one up, sliding the seal off and unrolling it. "Yes, actually . . . there was a caravan of Dwarven Miners who disappeared in the area a few weeks before the villagers went missing. I never thought about it until now. . ."
He set the parchment down and looked Raelise in the eyes, a puzzled look on his face. "Do you think its connected?"

Spiders the size of a dog! Ah, but the horse sized ones were the real worry! Zywynran would have to remember that whenever he had a moment to compose notes of this journey. It was a most exciting mission already, but Zywynran managed with great effort to keep his own counsel. The elven woman had asked a question of the steward and the entertainer quietly deferred to her. It was amazing even to him that he could do anything quietly, but he did. After all, the conversation threatened to veer into tactics of which he knew not a thing!

Raelise's cool blue eyes met the Steward's briefly, and then flicked down to study the parchment. If it is, she thought, This is a good deal more serious than I suspected. Abducting villagers was one thing; kidnapping an entire caravan of famously tough dwarven miners would require either a truly incredible strategist, or... Perhaps I should ask for a raise... she thought idly. Finally, she met the man's eyes again and nodded. "Too coincidental," she murmured.
