"It was a little confusing for us at first as well," Haradhel admitted. "But we've had a few years to get used to the idea. Still, what with their new positions and having a new baby and the like ... I don't think we'll be seeing them out here anymore."
She smiled faintly. "It's kind of sad, actually."
"It is," Elrohir agreed, "but I'm proud of them." He turned to Kara. "I don't suppose either of them ever told you how much they both hate Pen's parents," he said dryly.

"Not to us no...." Kara replied softly, "Lin had once told me she had gotten the impression they would be terrible in-laws to have."
She looked thoughtful, the topic of Pen's parents had never come up between them.
"I think it had to do with the fact it would give them too much satisfaction to be hosting the wedding or to have wedding at the palace, which was why Lin said she was glad they were just going to get married and be done with it."
She glanced at Donovan.
"At the time I thought she sounded a bit too much like Van."

"You may not think so after hearing this," Elrohir replied, raising one eyebrow. "Pen's father used to be magistrate over the city, New Kaliningrad. Basically he kept the peace. He was supposed to help the people, too ... an unofficial king, I suppose, with fewer duties, since the Eastland wasn't an established nation."
"They should never have been given the position," Haradhel frowned, folding her arms across her chest.
"Agreed," Elrohir nodded, "but that was long before our time. For decades, the people had been growing more and more dissatisfied with them. They would have high tax rates, and give nothing back to the people. There was no aid for those who needed it. The poor were neglected. The ill were ignored. The homeless were shunned. All the magistrate and his wife did was spend lavish amounts of money on themselves, their daughter, and their home. Pen wasn't even figured into their lives, since he had walked out on them at such a young age."

"Which might explain why Pen goes under so many alias but his own," Donovan replied dryly.
He had recalled Lothiriel once mentioning that Pen wasn't his real name, and Donovan hadn't bothered at the time too much to find out Pen's name.

"I see....." Kara murmured with a frowned.
She was going to have to agree with Donovan on this one, it was no wonder why Pen avoided the topic of home and his own name.
"So eventually enough became enough."

"Indeed," Elrohir nodded grimly. "Pen and Lothiriel had just gone to visit his parents to finally tell them that they had married - no matter their opinion of them, they did have to know, after all - and when they arrived, there was a townsman there to see Pen's father ... he had been robbed the night before, and he was asking the magistrate to send some men in search of the thieves, but Pen's father just ordered the man to be thrown out into the street. Pen and Lothiriel apparently arrived just in time to see the magistrate's men beating the poor man, and ..."
He coughed. "Let's just say ... Pen was holding himself back, and the guards weren't even able to walk away on their own. He and Lothiriel sort of stormed their way through the mansion-"
"Fighting all the way," Haradhel added, "since apparently even they were denied entrance by Pen's own parents."
"-and their biggest fight was with Pen's father himself," Elrohir resumed his narrative. "Long story short, Pen's sister and mother left the city in disgrace, his father was injured so badly he died a month later in the healer's house, and as soon as the city people heard what had happened, they demanded to know who had done it."
"The moment they heard Lothiriel is an Aldrich," Arwen piped up with a grin, "the entire city started shouting for her and Pen to be their leaders - a proper queen and king instead of a magistrate. Less than a week later they were coronated, and since then they've been living with Shael's brother and sister while they wait for their palace to be built."
She giggled. "Roydon and I are going to visit them on our way south," she added. "They said in their last letter that the palace is almost ready for them to move in, so we might even get to see that!"

It was a bit dumbfounding, and a bit sad in a way that someone could be so cruel and here she had thought Pen's family were wonderful like he was, but it sounded like that was not the case at all.
She shook her head, "That is awful, but at least is something good came out of it."
"Can we visit there too Grandma?" Naida asked, "Aliya-chan suggested we could make a portal there. Could we? Please..........."
"I'll think about that one, we have to ask to make a portal though."

Elrohir smiled. "I think they would love it if you made a portal there," he murmured, "but you might want to wait until the palace is complete so that it's safe. As for permission ..."
He chuckled. "Did you ask permission to put one in Nako's palace in the Southland? Or the one here in the valley, for that matter?"
He grinned. "Not that anyone minds. I'm just making a point. You know they're going to love having you visit, it's going to be a pain for you to travel there otherwise to ask first ... once you know the palace is complete, just do it."
Arwen stared at her father in disbelief. "Ada ... I've never heard you talk like that before," she said in amazement. "You've ... never ... never talked like that before ..."

Kara giggled, even though she would have argued they had not established any roots here in the Four Lands... he did have a point.
"Point well made," Kara replied, "And the family now have the means to protect the portals more fully than can ever be done at the inn."
She knew of course he knew, but she didn't know if Haradhel ever found out about what Elrohir did taking that crib and those chairs into their world.
"Talk like what?" Naida was confused, "It's a good thing right?"

Rose giggled at Naida. "Never mind," she smiled mischievously.
Elrohir chuckled. "Then it's settled. As soon as the palace is complete enough, we'll let you know. I don't know how much more information you would need to create a portal, but I know for a fact that Pen and Lothiriel would be more than happy to have you visit them quite often. And after decades of wandering, staying in one place, where they can't visit people, is going to drive them crazy."
"I just can't help but wonder if they might not need someone to help them out," Arwen mused thoughtfully. "I mean ... what with a new baby, and a kingdom to rule ... now that the Eastland is an official kingdom, and the borders have been established and everything ..."

"Hmm... will need someone to show us," Kara replied thoughtfully, "Since Yue had been to the plantation that is how we're planning to set up a portal there in the future, the reference for the Borderlands came from me and in the Southland came from both Yue and Yukito."
Otherwise they could end up anywhere but the castle.
"Without knowing, we could end up anywhere just like how Donovan ended up in the Borderlands, I ended up a two day trip away from the Borderlands, Triton ended up closer to the Westland and the twins end up in the Southland."
"Maybe someone will come and help them," Naida suggested innocently, "Because it would take a lot of help to do all of that right?"
She didn't know how kingdoms were run much less how babies were raised, but she had assumed a lot of help would be needed.

"And yet you all managed to meet up," Elrohir chuckled. "But yes, if you're going to make it permanent, then it's best you see it first, or have someone else see it first."
"Beren and Serenity are there right now," Adanedhel told Naida with a grin. "As soon as Lothiriel's letter came last week with news of the baby, they were gone - they probably won't be back until after Pen and Lothiriel have moved into their palace and have more official help."

"We were just very lucky," Kara chuckled, "So, once it's done we need someone there to see it first."
Though she thought that Lin might like that chance if she didn't send one of the mage twins up, whom they might like to do that as well. Yue especially, would like to meet Lothiriel.
"That's good! Babies are a lot to look after I saw babies, Elnara and Lore have babies and they're very cute but they're bigger than me." Naida thought about it, "Have I met Serenity and Beren Mommy?"
She couldn't remember.
Feng shook her head, "No, you haven't... but maybe one day," she stroked Naida's hair, "But that will have to be a later visit."

Just about everyone laughed at Naida's comment about the babies, and then Roydon put one arm around Arwen's shoulders.
"I really hate to end this so quickly," he smiled, "but I think we should be heading back home to bed. Good night everyone. Haradhel, thank you once again for dinner, it was lovely."
"Yes, thanks Mother," Arwen piped up, rising and tugging Roydon to his feet as well. "Good night everyone ... Kara, Donovan, Ahren, Arahad, Mother, Father ... Rose."
She giggled and headed towards the door.
Adanedhel smiled down at Rose. "And we should be heading back before Mother starts to worry again," he murmured. He put his hands on her shoulders and kissed her gently on the forehead, then held out his hands to take Naida from her. "Until tomorrow then," he said warmly. "Sleep well."
Rose giggled up at Adanedhel, but she didn't blush - this had become a ritual between them both each night even when Adonijah was present. "Sweet dreams," she smiled at him, passing Naida over.

Feng was the one to take Naida cuddling the little girl close since it was getting cold out. Not that Naida would have noticed anyway being part mer and all, winter wasn't a big of an issue.
"Then off we go, we'll be back."
"In the daytime when everyone is out?" Naida just has to ask that question, and she got a nod in return.
And before Kara could wonder where her other three children went to the door to the ranch house opened. Miyu and Toshiro trotted into the kitchen, obviously happy and probably fed if the way Miyu crawled up beside her grandmother and looked like she was ready to doze off at any moment.
Toshiro, noting the frowned on his father's face shrugged and crossed his arms over his shoulder, "She's with Elros, she can't get into too much trouble that way."
Besides he thought her sleep patterns were already shot to hell a bit more wasn't going to hurt her.
