One of my favorite authors is probably JIm Butcher. He's done a few series, but most stand-outish is The Dresden Files. Solid urban fantasy mixed with noir detective fiction thrown in. The first book almost literally stands with Dresden sitting in his office when a women walks in and asks for his help.
Classic!

As for other authors, I'd go with JK Rowling, Kenneth Oppel, Piers Anthony and a whole host of other authors.

Can't really say what my absolute favorite author is, as I enjoy quite a few sci/fi and fantasy writers, Ranging from Alan Dean Foster's Pip and Flinx series, sentenced to prism, etc... Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern, Talents, and Brainship series', Piers Anthony and his Apprentice Adept and Xanth series', Erin Hunter's Warriors Series', Tamora Pierce's series', Larry Niven's Man-Kzin wars, Robert Thurston's Jade Phoenix trilogy, and quite a few more including Tad Williams, Robert N. Charrette, Robert Asprin (Love his Myth series), but I do have to say I have most, if not all of the Magic the Gathering novel series, ranging from the books published through Harper Prism publishers all the way to shadormoor (I may be missing one or two of the very latest as it has been a while since I last checked on new publications.)
Anyways, if it has to do with science fiction and fantasy, I have probably (not a hundred percent, more like 85-95 percent) have heard of the author, the book, series, etc... or can find out very fast.

I love every book by Sarah Dessen.
They feed my interest of girly but serious books.
I also love reading Bleach manga.
One other book I absolutely LOVE is A Map of the Known World.
And many more things.

In general I'm a fan of old literature, fantasy, horror and mystery. I don't have a favorite book or author sadly.
