not so much something i learned but something i've realized recently, I'd much rather be waking up at 6am to feed chickens and milk cow's and cut wood and plow fields and whatnot and spending my spare time tinkering with my knifemaking and forging. But alas i instead have to live and work in the city because i have no money to buy my own land. Not to mention i need to move several hours away because an acre around here goes for about 50grand and i can't afford to buy 20 acre's at that price.

PIRHAN, I"M SO PROUD OF YOU!!!!!! rofl

What a great find! I had one like that from my great-grandmother---my uncle had carved his initials in it when he was little. Have you tried it yet? I always enjoyed sewing on the treadle machines, it was relaxing, and they sew wonderfully well. That is, unless there's a little kid sitting on the treadle. Congratulations!!!

Yesterday I made chicken stock. I discovered that the easiest way to know when it's done is when you can break the bones in half with your hands. (aprox 10 hours worth of simmering) That means enough gelatin has leeched out into the stock.

I call it my golden meat jelly.

Did you freeze some? I love making stock. The house smells wonderful.

Yesterday I worked until 2 pm taking apart a huge crate so I can reuse the wood for the llama/goat shed. Then most of the afternoon was spent anxiously awaiting news from Ft. Hood, where my niece's husband is stationed until he comes home in December after his tour of duty in Iraq. Finally, good news! and a call from my niece about 10:30. Long day, but a good day.

Today I made homemade biscuits for the first time whee So delicious and easy. Definitely worth it.

They came out a little flat because I rolled them out too thin, but they were still really yummy.

So I attended this edifying Arbor day event at the local botanical garden, and I got a free tree! As for making something... I doodled a bird/cup-thing.

December 11th----had a very stressful day. My son was playing frisbee with his weimareiner, who stepped into a looped piece of rope being used as a tie-out for another dog (not there at the time), and broke off his foot! We made a flying trip to the vet, and several hours later, the dog's leg was amputated. The dog is just fine, and we are getting there. My son stayed with his dog through the whole ordeal. He starts work at the vet's on Monday as a vet tech.

Last Saturday----Finally got to pick up the llamas and bring them home! They had never been off the farm where they were born and never been trailered, but loaded and rode and unloaded just fine. They had to show the pygmy goats who was boss, but now they are all great friends.
Got the truck stuck in the mud here, then the towtruck that came got stuck, too! The driver said, "you need about 5 loads of rock brought in here." When my husband told him that 4 truckloads were delivered 2 days before, he just shook his head and said, "No charge."

Repaired the big shed for the llamas today, ahead of the freezing rain, sleet, and snow that is coming. It blew over yesterday, in spite of augers holding it down! We had to retrieve parts of it from the neighbors' field yesterday, then put it all back together this morning. We'll see what the llamas think---they like the cold, and didn't mind the rain when we brought them. They may not even choose to go inside, but at least their hay will stay dry.
