DarkElf27 Might be old news, but IG settled some of this with their heavy-bolter wielding Sargeant Harker. True enough. Harker -is- enough of a badass, rules-wise, that he can pull it off.

Very true. He's an upgrade and acts as a squad leader, though.

Think about this... When you look at the Iconic Space Marine, what do you see?
Lets use Calgar for example, as he is amazing in any situation.
While on the Battlefield Calgar wades through incoming enemy fire like hes playing in the kiddy pool. And once he is done swimming he is going to dry off and smash your face with dual-powerfists...
now lets say they gave him a really big gun... would that be as cool if he just stood there and shot things? Or would you rather him beat face, face 2 face.

Calgar can be successful as a Shooty Commander due to his tricked out Stormbolter. He fares better in assault, though.
Recently, there have been more options included to make "support" commanders with things like Orbital Bombardments and long range artillery.

And the force commanders can be lightly kitted for ranged combat, but they fare much much better in cc. As im sure your away of. (unless your tau, then stand back and blaze away)

Guard platoon and company command squads are true support HQ's with those Orders and expensively squishy but very useful Advisors. I'm really tempted to field a two platoon army with the heavy weapon squads hunkering down around the company commander, so he can shout "Bring It Down!" and "Fire on my Target!" to his hearts content while the platoon commanders shout "Move! Move! Move!" and "First Rank, FIRE! Second Rank, FIRE!" to the infantry squads.
Isn't possible with the new Space Wolves codex to give your Wolf Lord terminator armour and an assault cannon? That would make for a pretty good shooty commander.

I still need to look at the new wolf codex! stressed some people may complain since the assault cannon is 24" range though. @Van: The conversion beamer, Its like splicing Halo into 40k and giving the Mechanicum the Spartan Laser!! heart heart

Command squads of either ranking serve as either a command platform or as a counter-charge unit. A weak one at that, but with BS+WS 4 lieutenants they can suddenly do so much more in my eyes. Company command squads do really make the most of it by hanging back with those advisors, be it dropping an Earthshaker round every turn or denying the enemy his reinforcements for another turn. This is of course ignoring the special characters, who are all geared towards close combat for the most part. Exception of course is Creed, who is a brilliant support commander with his four orders and that Tactical Genius special rule that those filthy 4Chan cunts so like to shout about.

Creed really is the standard issue special character of the codex. I'm actually tempted to include him as well. sweatdrop And Harker! That model is just ace! Plus having an assault squad made up of veterans with heavy bolter support on the move never hurts. Maybe I'll ask Guy to sculpt him a boonie hat. whee
