"S'pose I can't complain." He waved to her mother, "Mrs. Ginty, a pleasure as always. I can't wait to taste that home cooking you brew up. John got himself a mighty fine woman, if you don't mind me saying so." He gave the bag to Doris, "By the way, here are some goods. I figured I wouldn't be much of a good guest if I didn't bring something by. Doris, there's a little something for you to drink, and some harder stuff for the side. So where is John?"

Doris took the bag into the kitchen and set it on the counter. She smiled at the bottle hidden in the bottom. She stayed in the kitchen a little while, pretending to clean up as the grown ups talked. She heard her father enter the dining room, so she joined them. The food was spread out on the table and the plates were set, along with the fine crystal. She sat down between her father and Joe.

Joe ate his food pleasantly. "Ginty, so what are the plans for these next few days? Anything for me to ship on in through my company? The guys are itching for more work." He drank a bit, "Almost seems like we're seeing issues with the green as of recently." He winked and smiled. The bootlegging industry wouldn't see true financial issues, as so many others were. The supply was difficult and dangerous, and there was a greater demand for alcohol than there was for jobs. "I was thinking we could expand a little. Get yourself someone to run a second lounge. The man power seems to be available, and I can think of a good person to run it." Joe shrugged, and kept eating.

"Hm, the next few days, we only need one more shipment, the last one this morning will hold us up for a while," John ate a forkful of tasty food, he thought about Joe's proposition as he chewed. "That wouldn't be bad, a second lounge," he said. He looked over at Joe,"Who do you have in mind?"
Doris looked from one to the other, then looked down and started pecking at her food. She never ate much, because she wasn't ever really hungry. Her mother called it 'becoming a lady', whatever it was, she didn't care. She looked at her mother, who had no idea what the two men were talking about, she smirked and then looked down again. She took a drink of sparkling grape juice, since her mother 'didn't like wine'.

He pulled out a pocket watch and noted that it was only an hour before the bar would open and heaved himself over the rickety bar. Unfortunately, his weight was too much for the rail and he crashed down into the shallow water between the boat and the shore. "Ow. Gotta remember to fix that thing later." Charles stood up and started in a slow run toward the city lights. "Wonder what ginty's gonna say about me crashing one of our few cars."

"Doris," he said, matter of fact while still eating. "Smart kid, she can handle herself and a business. Maybe for her 18th birthday or something. There are plenty of guys that could keep the place clean. None of them are dirty." He continued eating and drinking, "This is amazing Mrs. Ginty."

"Thanks Joe, and it's Margaret, you don't have to be so formal, you've been around since Doris was in diapers," she giggled. Doris gave her mother a reproachful look, not wanting her to bring up any memories from when she was a baby.
Then she turned to Joe, "You really think I'm smart and could handle it Joe?" She asked in all innocence, she set her fork down and drank more juice.

He raised an eyebrow, "Well, only one way to find out, eh?" He finished his food. "Margaret, once more it was delicious. Thanks for the invite Ginty. I think I should get going soon, though. Sorry to eat and run." He stood, and ruffled Doris's hair, "Don't be too late."

"Oh, don't worry about it, we're always happy to have you around," Margaret said. Doris fixed her hair after Joe ruffled it and sent him a playful look. "Yeah, I won't be too late, just after dishes," she told Joe. John stood up, getting ready to leave with Joe.
"It's nothing Joe, you're my best man, so you get treated best," he picked up his hat and set it on his head and tipped it at Margaret and Doris. "See you there Bunny," he told her.
Doris got up and picked up the empty plates and took them to the sink. Her mother joined her shortly after. "Well, Joe seems nice enough," she said to her daughter. Doris looked at her.
"What are you getting at?" She asked slyly, noticing her mother wouldn't make eye contact as she started to run hot water over the dishes. She looked out the window and saw Joe and her father. "Well, I'm off," she said and went upstairs to get her clutch purse and new hat that matched the dress. She caught up with her father and Joe.

Joe walked into the bar and lit up. He found a nice table in a corner and sat back as the other patrons started to shuffle in. John went behind the bar to work with the people, but Joe just wasn't much for such random interactions. Time to time he would send a dame a drink, and strike up conversation with them until they found someone else more interesting to talk to. "Where the hell are the others?" he wondered.

She never quite caught up with the two men, so she started to walk slower. She looked around and saw the El Cortez Hotel to the south. She liked the blinking El Cortez sign on top, it lit up the sky around it.
She remembers once being in there, the ballroom was luxurious, it was for her parent's wedding. They weren't married until a few years ago. The El Cortez was the perfect spot for the reception. She pretended she was on the shiney black dance floor that mirrored the ceiling. She laughed, and looked around. She straightened up and walked to the Mayfair's basement.
She found Joe smoking being a recluse. "Hey there," she said, walking up to him. "Why so lonesome?"
