Lore put a hand on Elnara's shoulder, "It has been a long while since we've been here and time does past very quickly, but... we have many weeks for you to catch up with everyone. Even though we can't be here often, at least we can be here for a long time."

Alyse's blush deepened, but she smiled and nodded shyly, holding one hand out to Feng. Of course, to her, Feng was no different from anyone else - most of the people she knew were tall and had black hair, after all, and English wasn't that uncommon, even though she rarely used it. She glanced up at her mother once more, but she understood that her brother was hungry and that her mother was going to be needed, so she held one hand out to Feng and looked back at her, her clear blue eyes filled with trust.

Adan took the feather gleefully from Tao's beak and stuck it in the top of his golden braid. "Thanks, Tao!" he said brightly. He stroked her cheek and looked up at Ryu. "I know she can't talk but it's still good to talk to animals, because it makes them feel happier and it helps them trust us," he grinned. "That's what Papa says. The animals say so too, when they talk to me."

Aliya smiled gratefully. Now that the kids were occupied again, she was safe to go inside and feed Adonijah, and she took the opportunity to do just that, disappearing from the group and heading inside.

There was no response from Elros's door, but Aragost's door opened after only a moment, and the tall, dark man appeared in the doorway, hidden away beneath his robes and cloak as always.

"Miyu," he greeted the child, his pleasure evident in his voice. "Lin. Storm. Starr. Welcome. Elros is out on duty at the moment, Lin ... he will not be answering his door ..."

He opened the door wider. "Come in, come in," he invited them all.

His room was no different from how it had been the last time, just as empty, just as emotionless.

Arwen grinned at Donovan. "Aye, I think it would be fun," she agreed. "We never get to see you and you always do so much to make people like you. Shael wanted to see you more last time too but you were gone too fast. But you should save the kids first, because they need saving and it's good for them to be saved as quick as possible so that they don't have to be with the bad men like Adan was."

She frowned. "Adan says that they didn't give him any food or water or anything, and they hit him a lot." She paused, looking up at Donovan curiously. "Did you know they took Adan?"

Haradhel came into the dining room just at that moment with a tray of three glasses of wine and a stack of cups.

"Here," she smiled, handing a glass of sparkling white wine to Lore and a glass of red wine to Elnara. She set the third glass of wine on the table, then spread the empty cups out and filled them with water using her magic. "Help yourselves," she invited. Then she moved to take Timaeus from Celebor that the teen could get his drink.

Elnara took her drink from Haradhel and thanked her, then looked back at Lore, smiling softly.

"Thanks," she murmured softly. "I look forward to it ... time to relax ... no worries ..."

She was half listening in on the conversations going on around her, and she couldn't help but hear Arwen's comment about the slavers. "Who's Adan?" she wondered aloud, more to herself than anything else.

Storm and Starr exchanged a curious glance, then Storm looked up at Aragost and asked bluntly, "How do you know who we are?"

"We've never seen you before," Starr added as she stepped into the rather empty room.

Kara overheard though and frowned when she realized what the conversation was about. She made a note to send Wish out with the children if they were going to go off like that. She had thought things were fine after that on incident in the winter.

"Adan is Aliya's eldest," Kara explain, "He'll be visiting no doubt since he takes lessons from Aragost."

"Magic of course," Miyu replied as if it was the most obvious answer in the world, and to her it was. She was always use to Aragost knowing just about everything.

She skittered in along with the others and looked around the room, she still hadn't decided what would look good in his room.

"Now, what would you like to do?" Feng asked the little girl, "I use to play with your brother a lot when I visited and he was younger," she giggled, "Though he's obviously much older now."

"Really? You can understand them as well?" Ryu asked curious.

Donovan frowned, the things he missed when he was away and when in the hell did they get that close?

"No, actually I didn't know about Adan getting taken like that," he replied, "Is he alright?"

Well of course the boy had to be if Arwen was talking about him like that, but still.

Lin whirled around and smiled, well she could wait after all and he did have a job to do.

"Hi Aragost," Lin greeted him not at all startled by his knowledge in names, that was just Aragost and he knew everything, she turned to join the others in the room.

Alyse looked up at Feng through long eyelashes. "You play with Adan?" she asked in a voice so soft that it was barely audible. She looked over at her big brother and smiled, then looked back up at Feng. "You come here lots?"

She took Feng's hand and tugged it gently, trying to lead her off a bit.

Adan grinned proudly at Ryu. "Just like Papa!" he agreed. "Sometimes I talk with the horses, and sometimes with some of the other animals that are around. It's nice to talk to them. Even animals that can't talk back like to be talked to."

He giggled and hugged Tao around the neck again. "Especially her, I think."

Aragost chuckled softly at Storm and Starr. On one sense, yes it was magic that he knew so much about them, but on another sense it wasn't so much.

"How have you been?" he asked the children warmly. "It has been quite a while since I have seen you two, Lin and Miyu."

Haradhel heard Donovan's question, and, reasoning that it was best they get the facts before they heard a distorted version of the story from one of the children, she decided that it was best she just tell them herself.

"Last summer, Adanedhel was kidnapped by the largest group of slavers we've seen or heard of yet. Amazingly, he was the only one taken," she explained, "but he was horribly mistreated ... Ulani said that when she and Aragost caught up with them, he was barely conscious and very badly injured. He kept falling in and out of consciousness on the journey back, too. He's fine now, and we won't have to worry about those slavers again .. though Aragost didn't leave any of them alive to warn others."

She grimaced. "Ulani won't say what he did to them ... and when he talks about it, she's frightened ... like ... it's something that none of us could imagine, so terrible that even to speak of it would be impossible."

"It has to have been pretty bad, if Ulani won't talk about it," Elnara murmured softly, her eyes troubled. "I've never known her to be tight-lipped about anything before, except her time in Laurefalas."

She had a feeling she might not want to know, either.

"Poor Aliya, though," she frowned. "I can't imagine what that must have been like for her."

Starr and Storm headed for Aragost's bed as if by some unspoken agreement they had decided together that they would sit there, and made themselves comfortable while Lin and Miyu chatted with the dark man. They didn't know him, after all, though he seemed to know them, and they were content to sit and watch to learn what it was like with him, why Miyu would seek him out.

"Well... not as much as I would like, once every year or several years depending," Feng explained, "I live far away where things are very different so it's hard to come here so often, even though I really do try!"

Ryu had to laugh at that, because Adan was right about Tao, she had always been the type to want to be talked to or just loved.

"Yes, Tao does love attention very much."

Miyu nodded, "I'm very good," she murmured softly.

She paused as if not sure how to bring this up, because she had thought she would be alone when she did. She wasn't very good in front of people sometimes.

"I... brought books."

Kara murmured, "Even though Donovan and I aren't here that often, we seen all sorts of children come through. They must have been particularly absuive though, and that's saying something for a slaver."

Donovan thought about it and mentally grumbled about how troublesome slavers were, "It must be very troubling for her, I mean.. Aliya was raised where she could run off and her parents didn't have to worry about her."

He mused on this for a moment.

"I wonder if they're coming around more because there's more of a settlement here with the Ranch, or they're just spreading out further."

Lin nodded in agreement to Miyu's statement about being very good, "And bento boxes," she added, "We brought those too, Triton taught us how to make them."

Alyse smiled shyly and led Feng towards the treeline. "Far away like Grandmother?" she asked softly, looking up at her. "We saw her a long time ago, she was nice."

Adan grinned. "Do we really get to keep her?" he asked Ryu, still unable to believe his good fortune. "I always wanted a griffin for a pet but Mama always said no."

Aragost smiled widely within the shadows of his cowl and knelt next to Miyu, putting one hand affectionately on her shoulder.

"That was very thoughtful of you," he murmured warmly. "I am very happy that you remembered ... thank you very much."

And he put one arm around her shoulders and brought her close for a hug.

"Or perhaps," Haradhel pointed out, "they found out where we are, and the realize that we are the source of their opposition and took him deliberately because of it. As for them being more cruel than most, you're quite correct, Kara, in one way."

She paused. "Cindy, do you remember that boy from the first set of children that were rescued? The one that had had his tongue cut out? That was done as punishment because he was the bravest child among them, talking back and mouthing off because he didn't want to do as he was ordered. It was done to him as an example to the other children that if the didn't behave they would suffer."

A faint smile crossed her lips. "Aragost assures us that we can all be quite proud of Adanedhel ... he fought back against them, and hard ... and even when he was bound so tightly that he couldn't move, he still did all that he could to fight against them, to free himself. He refused to do what they said, and that was the reason he was so badly mistreated.

"Bento boxes?" Storm questioned. "What are they? And what's the big deal about books? There are lots of books, why did Miyu bring them here?"

Starr poked her brother. "Stop being mean," she admonished him. "Just because we have lots of books at home doesn't mean that they have lots of books here."

"Sort of," Feng replied, "It's just a lot further than most people are use to thinking of."

She giggled at that, there would be few who would believe right off the bat that she came from a different world completely.

"Yes," Ryu replied, "Tao doesn't get as much room as she deserves and she needs something productive to do."

Miyu smiled hugging him back, her arms wrapped around him, at least as far as her small arms could go. Then she reached into her bag and brought out a few small books on folktales, and a closed box.

"Ah.. yes I remember him," Cindy nodded, "So that was the reason hmm? He must be an adult by now, it has been so long over here."
