Karite wasn't expecting what happened next. While still a little upset with Maya he grabbed the pelt and wrapped up tight. He was about to die because of his pride. He didn't know what came over but it was appreciated, but he wouldn't let her know that. Feeling warmer now the boy began to drift off into a deep sleep. Hopefully now Maya wouldn't try and kill him or let Tanu attack while she was working. This was going to be a long lifetime on this island."

Hmph. At least he wasn't a blatant ingrate...Maya shook her head. He was already dozing off; Maya planned on finishing the meat and getting on with her life. He'd be gone soon enough. Or a goner. Whichever came first. With renewed interest and vigor, she kept cutting the doe up, finally finishing the meat and putting the small rationed chunks to one side, and the larger slabs for Baki a little bit away from them. She still had two other animals to cut up, but at least she was actually getting to them. Now that Karite's mouth wasn't open anymore, Maya felt better about getting her responsibilities done. Ichi-sama had said she had to be clan leader now...could she possibly accept this hard-headed, verbal-vomiting violent kid be a part of the clan? With a small smile, she realized something.

Karite was exactly like her in all the ways that counted. Bold, unafraid of a fight, and with an affection for lions - though, Maya's affection was so deep, it was easily identified by everyone as love. To Maya, however, what she felt for Baki seemed like something so much stronger than just plain ol' love...but then, it was a feeling she wasn't very familiar with. It might be love, it might be something else. But Maya knew if she ever felt this way about something or someone else, it would be possible to die from the pain if she lost it. The thought frightened her, and she pressed against Baki as she sliced the buck meat into long, thin strips to dry out for jerky and treats. Baki liked chewing and eating the buck meat, so she left a few steak-sized cuts for cooking - or even just for eating raw. Baki liked it, so she didn't mind keeping them apart.

Finishing the buck, Maya reached for the lynx, and wrinkled her nose. Gross...carnivore meat. Was there even anyone on the island that wouldn't care? Oh...oh probably that beastly, evil, sword-bearing lunkhead that lived with the crazy island woman. She smiled slightly to herself, congratulating herself on finding someone who she could ditch this meat on. The fur was much appreciated, but the meat...wasn't her favorite. With a sigh, Maya began cutting it in wild-man sized chunks, and then found an old wooden bowl to stick them all in. She wasn't expecting the bowl back, so she used the oldest one on the grounds. She took the rest of the doe and buck meat and stored it properly...
Then she realized she would probably have to use some of the meat to trade for new things - like shoes for the kid. Shoes...pfft... Maya looked down at herself though, and winced slightly. Her clothes were shredded - and she didn't have any spare ones; at least, didn't know where to get ones like Shuga always gave her. Oh well...
Done with her task, Maya leaned back onto Baki and rolled her shoulders, closing her eyes. She'd take the lynx meat down to the shoreline later.

"Karite, leave us. Run away like you always do. We will be..." Snapping out of a nightmare Karite heard the ringing of a familiar bell. As the sound came to his mind he realized what it was. "NOOOOOO! I am going to be late for class. Maya do you mind watching Kore till I get back. Last time the teacher almost killed me for bringing him inside." Already sprinting top speed the boy looked like a bullet. off he was already at the exit to the grounds before he yelled out to her. "Thanks A Lot!" Making his way the best he could on the slick snow he flung up dirt and snow with every powerful thrust of his legs. "I cant be late, that would be bad."

Maya snorted, her eyes still closed. He was telling her to take care of her own pride? Ignorant boy...well, it was time to drag the nasty carnivore meat down to the shoreline. Nudging Baki, who stood and shook himself off, Maya picked up the bowl of meat and stretched her legs slightly. Balancing the bowl on her head (because she was talented like that, and also, because it was easier to bear the weight there), she started walking towards the shoreline, suddenly wondering if the ocean was frozen. Well, probably not, it hadn't been frozen when they returned from Orochi country, but even so, it was colder today; lower in temperature, anyway. Hm..
With a short growl, Maya gave Kore the order to stay with his sister on the grounds or to follow closely. Maya wasn't particularly fond of the idea of having to handle a cub again, since Baki had had her sole attention growing up, and now Kore would have to share. Well...it had to be done.

Kore shot out from under the bear pelt when Maya growled. He wasn't about to stay here with his sister and sleep his life away. There was much he had to learn and experience. Who better to do it with then Maya and Baki. As he shook out his fur. He managed to trot rather in a quick pace next to Baki. All he had to do was keep his pace and focus. Then it would be no problem. Maya would see the strength in Kore one day just like she would see in Karite. The two were a match made in heaven it seemed.

Arriving at the grounds, Maya stretched out and looked up at the snowflakes falling from the sky. Well damn. With a sigh, Maya decided to do what she liked best - pick a fight with Baki. With no outward sign on her face, she mentally planned her first 'attack'. She knew that neither of them would dodge the other's attack very well at all, but that they would both cause heavy damage. That was probably something they should work on - avoiding outward attacks with greater speed instead of just blocking with their physical defenses. Laying her tekagi down hear the fire, and pondering quietly, Maya waited until Baki was next to her before bracing her legs and shoving her shoulder into the lion's leg.

Caught off guard and slightly agitated, Baki snarled and bared his fangs, taking the hit without even bothering to dodge. He'd fail if he tried, and he knew that Maya was both stronger and faster than he was. For some reason, the though irritated him, and Baki snarled at the thought. Shaking his mane, Baki roared, the echoing snarl in his throat only a fraction of his mightiest roar. However, Baki made no attempt to withhold from the girl - with his ivory fangs gleaming, he lunged at her, aiming to bite her shoulder and incapacitate one of her arms.

Maya let out her own snarl as Baki's teeth sunk into her shoulder, immediately regretting her choice in the fight. However, she would not give up that easily; though her arm was numb, she still had another, and she had two legs to boot. And besides that, Maya could bite! She had raised Baki; she knew every single one of his 'soft' spots and wasn't below taking advantage of them. She grunted and headbutted him harshly against the side of his jaw - it would hurt, but it wouldn't be a life threatening blow. She bared her own teeth savagely, jerking her shoulder in the opposite direction of Baki's teeth, and tried to pry herself from his grasp.

Baki felt Maya's shoulder tear from his jaw, and in a slight moment of mercy he released her, baring his now blood-covered fangs and snarling at the girl. Through the years they'd been together, Baki knew he hadn't hit anything vital - Maya would heal just fine, as she had when he had bitten her leg, her forearm, her hip... She would endure, and she would go stronger. Or he would taunt her mercilessly for being weak even though he knew Maya was moderately more physically adept than he was. Having drawn blood first, though, and knowing she couldn't draw it back without her claw-weapon, Baki shook out his mane and swatted at her face, wondering if he would have to yield, or if she would call the fight off.

She smirked as she freed herself, barely feeling the wound on her shoulder. It would heal; they always did. If Maya had been an enemy, Baki would have went straight for her throat like he did when he was a cub. But he'd learned since then that sparring with Maya was not fighting against an enemy, and had not done it when he grew older and more dangerous. Almost immediately after being released, Maya thought to cease the fight, but she only rose to Baki's challenge - she felt his four sharp claws rake her cheek, and felt the warm liquid falling. She snarled, raising her uninjured shoulder and curling her hand into a fist, then stiffened and snorted. Still snarling, but with a smile on her face, she shoved Baki backwards into the log that was behind him, and stood, holding her shoulder lightly to be sure it hadn't been dislocated. That was that - she had had enough, and her body was sore.
