Greer Cassenwari
Greer circled the 'village', carefully collecting all of her mosquito nymph traps and storing them in on of the boxes that her supply packages had arrived in. Technically she should have continued the survey for another four weeks, but there didn't seem much point to it any more. They knew that they'd been lied to by the good doctor and his assisstant, which had been the question the mosquito question had been meant to answer. Besides, cleaning up after herself was only polite, as well as being an excellent way to procrastinate about talking to Aubrey. She really wasn't the person for that job.

Lost in thought and collection, she wouldn't have noticed a herd of rhinos thundering past.

Dr. Madison Moreau
Madison left her bungalow and felt like taking a nice walk. The sun shined warmly on her fair complexion as she made her way over to the village.

She took long strides and made it there in no time. The village appeared to be quiet with no one around at first. Then Madison banged her head on something in the trees.

"Ahhh what the .." she cried out, clutching her forehead. She grasped the hanging object in her hand for a closer inspection.

It appeared to be a trap of some sort. Madison tossed it away and it bobbed on the tree branch. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a girl putting the traps in a big box.

"Hey! You there! Be careful with those..they are an accident waiting to happen!" she yelled out, arms flailing.

Greer Cassenwari
Glancing at the ground, Greer frowned at the trap that lay at her feet. How on earth did that get there? Ah well. Sighing, she picked it up, storing it in the box with the rest of its kind. Standing, she heard a yell and jerked her head in the direction of the voice. A slightly odd looking, labcoated woman was standing under the tree the lost trap had been tied to. Ah.

"I'm sorry, I did put a note on the town hall door a few days ago to warn people about the prevalence of traps." she smiled apologetically. "Are you okay?"

Dr. Madison Moreau
Madison remembered her manners and smiled shyly at the woman.

"Hello there! I'm fine..just a little shocked. What are you hoping to catch with these traps here?" she asked, arching a brow.

Greer Cassenwari
"I was looking at the mosquito populations on the island. I'm an entomologist." Ah, a life made entirely out of looking at bugs! Twas a wonderful thing.

But of course, she was failing at the social thing again. Still smiling and looking flustered, she shifted her grip on the box and held out a hand. "Goodness me, look at my lack of manners! I'm Greer Cassenwari, and it's nice to meet you."

Dr. Madison Moreau
"Ento..mologist confused " Madison mumbled, repeating the strange word. She shrugged, it was probably something to do with bugs. It had been a few years since she opened a textbook.

Madison held out ..er a paw to Greer. "Likewise. My name is Madison Moreau. Feel free to call me Maddy though" she smiled and hoped that Greer would not be turned off by her rather unusual appearance.

She had been getting used to looking this way herself. It was probably a side effect of the shot that Dr. Moreau gave so that she could hear.

"Do you need any help taking these down?" she offered.

Greer Cassenwari
She shook the proffered appendage, trying not to wince at the claws.

"Nice to meet you! Do you work here?" Considering she had the last name of the doctor that was probably a stupid query, but hey.

It was a perfectly nice question, but Greer had always been a little protective of her research. "No thank you, I only have two more to do. Would you like to walk with me?"

She did her best to avoid asking about the woman's partial transformation, as it was probably a touchy subject.

Dr. Madison Moreau
Madison was relieved. Her odd appearance did not seem to bother Greer one bit and this meant that she had class. She herself was always taught to never gawk rudely at someone who was different from you and felt Greer had learned the same.

"I help the Dr. sometimes. I hope to offer counseling services in the future though for everyone on the island. Dr. Moreau is my cousin in case you were wondering" she replied.

Everyone that she had met on the island had been curious about her last name so she assumed that Greer was as well. Madison nodded to Greer's invitation to accompany her.

It would be fascinating to learn more about this enotmology that Greer was so into.

Greer Cassenwari
"His cousin, huh? Do you have a big family?"

What she really wanted to ask was what animal Ms. Moreau was turning into, but again thought better of it. Continuing on, she pull down another trap and stored it in her box.

Dr. Madison Moreau
"Yes I do, actually. I am an only child but I have a large extended family. It is so hard to remember them all" she giggled, looking into the box that Greer was carrying.

In each of the traps were some dead mosquitos. Some of them were so large that they made Madison shudder. Maybe Dr. Moreau really did give the Dude an immunization for Dengue fever. She thought that it would be a good idea to ask the good doctor for a shot of that stuff herself. With so many of these mosquitos around it would be a good idea.

"Sooo, did you get a shot for Dengue fever yet from the Dr.?" Madison asked, twitching her ear.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer shook her head. "I got a shot for something, but it wasn't dengue fever. I was looking at mosquito larvae to confirm what I already suspected: the two species of mosquito that can transmit the disease don't live on this island."

She bit her lip, stopping herself just short of calling Dr. Moreau a liar. It was not something she expected her companion wanted to hear.

Dr. Madison Moreau
Madison stroked the light hair on her chin."Interesting..," she murmured.

'I wonder what's going on..what is Moreau really doing?" Madison thought to herself. The Doctor might of been watching or hearing them so Madison quickly changed the subject..

"Sooo...how about those big mosquitos. Have you ever been bitten by them..heh?" she flustered, darting her eyes all around. There wasn't any sign of a video camera or anything but she couldn't be too sure.

Greer Cassenwari
"Oh, everyone gets bitten by mosquitos. Just the females, of course, since the males don't drink blood. But I'm not allergic to their salavia, so I don't get itchy bumps."

Stowing the last trap in her box, Greer puzzled over the sudden change in subject. Was Madison worried by something? She would have thought over it longer, but her growling stomach distracted her.

"Have you eaten yet? I'm starving."

Dr. Madison Moreau
Madison perked up her ears and caught the sound of something rumbling. It was so strange how she could hear off and on. It was always an unfamiliar sound though. She would like to finally hear Ambrose's voice sometime..she wondered where he might be.

"I'm hungry too," she said smacking her lips, "I think we better get away from here anyways..I heard something peculiar just now"

Greer Cassenwari
Greer cocked her head, puzzled. "Oh? what sort of sound was it?"

Shifting her grip on the box again, she slowly lead the way towards the cafeteria. She hoped they had something interesting.

Dr. Madison Moreau
"Never mind! It was nothing," Madison remarked on her way with Greer to the cafeteria.

The aroma of salisbury steak tickled her nostrils and she began to salivate. It was rather embarrassing because there was some drool coming out of her mouth and she couldn''t stop it.

Madison looked away from Greer and wiped it with her hand, then smeared it away on her pantleg. That sure was disgusting to do but better then having spit dribbling from your chin. sweatdrop

"I smell steak! I hope we got here in time as to beat the lunchtime rush," she said and began to quicken her steps towards the cafeteria doors.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer couldn't smell anything, which was just as well, since she'd never been partial to the odor of seared flesh. At Madison's comment she chuckled.

"Lunch time rush? You mean all four people?"

Dr. Madison Moreau
Madison giggled. She was in such a rush to eat something that she hadn't noticed that barely anyone was in the cafeteria anyways.

"I might just be hungry that I'm getting a bit delusional" she remarked and got in line for some grub.

There was of course the salisbury steak and other good things as she stocked up her plate. Madison stuck her nose up when she passed by the salad bar and sat down at a nearby table.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer shook her head, smiling. Rice and a vegetable stir fry went on her plate, which joined a glass of lemonade on her tray. A small salad with miso dressing rounded out the meal, and she went to join Madison at the table.

"So, you're a counselor? Is that like a psychologist?"

Dr. Madison Moreau
Madison speared a piece of steak on her plate with a fork and stuffed it in her mouth. She didn't normally eat her food without cutting it into small pieces but today she was alot hungrier than usual.

Greer sat down across from her and Madison sneered at what she had on her plate but didn't want to criticize. Where was the beef? confused

"Yes I am. At my last job I worked as a psychiatrist and helped people. I hope to do the same here" she said with a mouthful of food. Madison wiped her mouth and grinned as to apologize for her lack of manners.

It was like her behavior was changing and she didn't know the answer as to why.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer watched her companion eat, slightly frightened. She'd eaten with non-vegetarians before. They'd never acted quite so... carnivorous.

"How? By making people feel better about what's happening?" She winced, regretting her words immediately. She didn't hold anything against Madison for being related to the doctor, and certainly didn't want to imply that they were in cahoots.

Dr. Madison Moreau
Madison laughed a little at Greer's reaction to her animalistic eating habits. "I take it that you are one of those green people," she said.

She just didn't understand how someone could pass up a big thick juicy steak covered with A1 steak sauce. Just the thought of it made Madison begin to salivate again, wiping her mouth with a napkin as before.

"Yes, I hope to make them feel better. It is unerving for some people to leave their previous way of life and arrive on this island. The environment is very unstructured and I don't want anyone reverting themselves to utter chaos" she nodded and continued to eat.

"Have you always been fascinated with bugs?" she asked, raising a brow.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer nodded, finishing her salad and making a serious dent in her stir fry. Veggie or not, she was eating much more than usual. Probably a sign of impending transformation, she thought glumly.

"Yes, I always have been. A lot of people in the Seattle area are raised veggie."

She was so... non-chalant about what was happening. Greer certainly didn't know the whole story, but she was well aware that this was cutting Ambrose to ribbons, and that the Dude was none too happy either. And if she'd been lied to, well...

"But how.... how can you help your cousin with this? It's not..." she paused, not wanting to say anything about morality, which she'd found could lead to upsetting people. "...professional." she finished lamely.

Turning back to her meal self conciously, she nodded in response to Madison's last question. "All my life."

Dr. Madison Moreau
Greer's comment about Moreau sent shivers down Madison's spine. "I'm not entirely sure with what he is doing. I personally think it is nice to get away from my civilized life for a change. This island is a paradise! I'm enjoying myself very much, aren't you?"

Madison wiped her mouth with a napkin and felt like going up to get more to eat. It was a buffet after all..but she didn't want Greer to think she was a pig or anything.

"I'm stuffed!" she remarked, patting her lightly furred belly all satisfied.

Hearing Greer talk so nonchantly about bugs unsettled her stomach a bit. She never really liked icky things but didn't want to jump on anyone who did have an affinity for them.

"How interesting! How many species of bugs are there? I heard that in the rainforests, scientists are discovering more kinds all the time" she nodded with a wink.

Greer Cassenwari
Answering the insect question first, Greer put down her fork. "Millions. We've only named a small fraction of the full diversity."

There were a million things she wanted to ask Madison, about her own personal transofrmation, and what it meant for the rest of them. Sure, the island was pretty, but that didn't make non-consented to genetic right in any way shape or form. How could she be okay with this? How could she smile and eat like everything was all right? Ambrose was falling to pieces and this woman just grinned through her fangs and shook hands with furry fingers that ended in claws-

"I- excuse me, I have to go. I don't- um, I don't feel well. Excuse me."

Standing, she stammered out an apology, grabbed her box and fled. Her stomach still growled for food, but she couldn't sit there, talking to that woman another second longer without saying some things that were sure to upset her. It had been so much easier before, when no one tried to talk to her or grew fur. The world had made sense then. Greer had thought once that she would give up everything she knew to become a field entomologist. Well, here was her chance. Funny, it didn't seem to be going as well as she's planned.

Hargun
Hargun sat down in what seemed to be a safe spot in the sand that had just narrowly been out of the seething waves' reach. She circled around about, making a basin for her to sit in and whipped out her sketchbook. Scanning the pages for the last time she visited her world of imagination and turned to a page where she had sketched two people's heads; apparently that of Timothy and Aubrey's (whose had a tounge sticking out and x'ed eyes.) She didn't particularly mean to do it after she realized she had drawn aubrey fairly well, but it was quite important that she did make her look a bit goofy.. to relief her irritation.

Before she could seriously begin to draw, after she had a light contour of the ocean's horizon, she felt a trickle on her foot and she leaped from her spot, noticing she had been -very- wrong of where to sit. Hargun squirmed back as quickly as she could, hugging her sketchbook tight as she glared at the water as if it had pulled a very mean prank on her.

Ah yes.. it did tend to worry her that she almost considered the water to be human; and a bully at that. But she watched as the water retreated from the shore, and waited for it to come back in once more before she finally choose to sit down again, brusing off sand from her paper and shirt.

Ambrose Maurlias
Ambrose had gathered his fencing equipment again and headed out towards the beach. He had never really found so much peace with the beach before coming here.... perhaps it was the fact that he was getting away from the sweltering oppressive heat of the jungle and the overbearing facade of the complex and he could be with his thoughts... or deal with people away from at least the feeling of being watched (even if he really was.)

He drug his barefeet through the sand, having abandoned the sandals altogether. After his discussion with Aubrey the other day, his heart had sunk back down to the pit of his stomach, and he was really feeling quite sorry for himself and everyone else stuck in the same miserable position.

His epee was over his shoulder and he glanced out at the now familiar stretch of sand, wishing that, despite the beauty, that it was the buildings of Amherst, Massachusetts instead.

However, once again, instead of seeing the empty beaches, he saw a lone figure sitting near the water. The bright orangey hair on the diminutive figure, however, was unfamiliar. another new subject...? Ambrose wondered, worried that he might have to break the bad news to yet another person.

Slowly, he shuffled in her general direction.

Greer Cassenwari
In a further effort to avoid having to talk to people, Greer had been spending vast amounts of time hunting butterflies. She wasn't actually a fan of butterflies, finding them fairly mundane compared to other more interesting bugs, so her current attention to them was a clear delaying tactic. On the plus side, it had begun to give her a grudging respect for the delicate creatures, as they were much harder to catch then her prefered class of subjects. Take her current quarry for example, a male Marpesia iole that had eluded her netting efforts for over an hour. She was so focused on it's capture that she didn't notice it had led her out of the jungle and on to the beach until it landed on Ambrose's head. Damn it.

"Ambrose, don't move..."

She flicked her net forward, hoping to scoop the insect off of it's perch without whacking her friend in the head. If she was lucky, she could grab the butterfly and flee before he tried to ask her about talking to Ms. Aubrey.

Hargun
Hargun looked up for a second from her sketchbook and waved at Ambrose heading her way. She was quite wrapped up in her sketch of the ocean''s water even though it wouldnt sit still long enough for her to draw specific waves. So she just improvised and threw in one here and there as much as she could.

"Heya" she said turning back down to her paper to draw a few more waves. It wasn''t long until it dawned on her that the two were here for the artist community as well, then she jumped up and greeted them more thouroughly. "Sorry sorry.. couldn''t take my eyes off the paper." she grinned and waved at Greer as well; not exactly noticing her until now. She was so enthusiastic that she really did not pay any attention to Ambrose''s /specialness/ and simply outstretched her long but thin arm for a shake.

Ambrose Maurlias
Ambrose observed the rather young girl who had turned an enthusiastic smile to him upon his approach. "No - It's fine, really!" He smiled, feeling a bit off-guard by the cheery new face and seeming obliviousness to the features that were so much at the forefront of his own mind.

He stood still, having heard Greer's warning, the conflict evident in his mind between greeting this new person and trying to put forth a sunny disposition first before lauding great warnings on her unlike with poor Julian, and freezing for whatever reason Greer called out to him. He hadn't turned to face her yet, but knowing her, there might be a great, bloodsucking monstrosity perched on him, and so logic leaned towards the latter as he stood still, swallowing nervously.
"Greer...?" He called back hesitantly, not turning around. "What.... is something on me??"

Greer Cassenwari
"Yes... I've got it though..." the net snapped forward, scooping up the butterfly neatly. Unfortunately, the plastic lip that connected netting to handle also smacked Ambrose in the head.

"Eep! Sorry about that!" Reeling her prey in she twisted it quickly, sealing her catch in a pouch of netting. It was only then she noticed the unfamilar girl, and quickly flashed a smile in her direction.

Hargun
Hargun laughed for a good bit. She whiped a tear from her eye, which was quite usual when she laughed. "You guys must be here for those art scholarships right?" she asked after catching her breath. It seemed like the only explaination since thats what -she- was there for and Timothy as well, but they didn't look like they were busy doing artsy stuff.

"Hmm... you must be.. a fur-suitist?" she asked to Ambrose, then looked at Greer and raised an eyebrow, trying her best to identify what she would be, but couldn't quite think of anything. "Uhmm.. OH." she smacked her forehead. "Im so retarded... I don't even know who you guys are. Gah... stupid. Anyways.." she said and kind of straightened herself up a bit, to look more formal. Frankly, she looked goofy. "I'm Hargun Aikason... freehand drawer and well.. overall wierd person." she smiled and slumped again.

Ambrose Maurlias
"OW!" Ambrose exclaimed, as a rogue net smacked up upside the back of his head. His hand went up, rubbing the quickly forming goose-egg knot ruefully as he looked back to see what was so important to get off of him as to leave a welt. when he saw a black with orange and blue butterfly fluttering futiely in the net his eyes narrowed and he gave Greer a look. "That was what was so important?" He looked rather indignant - not really that upset, more than he was questioning her priorities.

Shaking his head he turned to look at the new person, his eyebrows raising. She was certainly cheery... and her initial assumption nearly caused him to smile if it wasn't for the fact that he felt sorry for her at the same time. Of course, assuming it was a costume was much more likely than actually seeing him and assuming that those features were real. Meant she was rather level-headed at least. But that made breaking the news to her all the more difficult - both in convincing her and in bringing whatever reason she thought she was here crashing down around her. He gave a small smile, not quite able to summon the same enthusiasm that she had in his response. "Art scholarship? That's what you're here for?" He queried dumbly, looking to her sketch pad and the admittedly beautiful landscapes. "And I apologize as well... My name is Ambrose... Ambrose Maurlias..." He paused for a moment before extending a furred hand.
ANd.... well... He swallowed, debating whether he had the energy to dissapoint her at the moment. "Kind of..." He winced.

Greer Cassenwari
Flinching at his glare, she smiled meekly. "I have been tracking it for more than an hour now..." Pulling a jar out of her small backpack, she slipped the fluttering bit of color inside, broke down her net, and stowed everything back in the pack.

"I am sorry Ambrose. Other than that, how are you doing?"

She raised an eyebrow at Hargun and glanced at her friend, defering to him when it came to breaking the news to new people. "I'm Greer. Nice to meet you."

Hargun
"Nice to meetcha, Ambrose and Greer." she smiled sweetly. She raised an eyebrow at them as it appeared they were all exchanging eyebrow lifts. Hers said 'Uhm why are you both looking at me like Im not from this earth' She patted her sketchbook assuringly and held it out invitingly for the two of them to see the litered contents inside. "The /big man/ here is offering them so.. I could really use it to get into a college later on. But I've yet to see or hear from him. The only person I've bumped into that seems to work here is that Dr. Aubrey Lockheart person.."

She looked towards Greer. "Im guessing now that you collect bugs?" she said and pulled open a page in her sketchbook that had a few messy sketches of insects she had seen when entering the labs, riding in the jeep, and just throughout her recent time there. "Youre not... one of those types that lets them die, preserves them, then tacs them to a moldy wall are you?" she asked. That wasn't one of her favorite things; seeing dead and/or alive animals on display. Although frequent trips to the zoo for artistic reasons were her only exceptions to this rule.. nay law of hers. But she figured itd be best not to rant anyways.

Make friends with the others here. Itll make your stay alot more exciting. she thoguht to herself, and sat down in her 'nest' and began to draw again, idly muttering to herself every time she messed up on a piece of her work.

Ambrose Maurlias
Ambrose shook his head and waved off Greer. "Don't worry about it" he tried to laugh it off - it really was rather amusing when thought about it. "I'm glad you got your butterfly. And... to be honest, a butterfly net knocking me on the head is preferable to a lot of the recent events" He winced, that probably meaning a lot more to her than Hargun.

"And Hargun, is it?" He smiled, saying the nae carefully. "Where are you from if you don't mind me asking. That's a rather unique name"

He couldn't help ut snicker at the query to Greer, knowing just how true that his assumption was. He looked over her sketchbook with lifted eyebrows and an approving "Hmm!" "Those are quite good, Hargun." He scratched his head, still rather uncomfortable. "SO... the scholarship... Dr. Moreau offered? For college credit..?" He tried to puzzle together the excuse she had been given, eying the familiar welt on her arm.

Greer Cassenwari
"Oh goodness me no!" She shook her head, smiling. "I'm an entomologist and besides, my walls are very clean"

Since Ambrose wasn't saying anything... upsetting... to this new girl, Greer kept her mouth shut about such things as well. She knew that she'd just break the news incorrectly anyway.

Her eyes grew big as she took int the notebook, and she had her own field notebook fished out of her pack and open in a flash. "Those are great! Much better than mine. I only learned for technical recording purposes."

Hargun
Hargun smiled and rubbed her head blushing. "You think theyre great?" she asked and eyed them. An artist is always their worst critique and she often found herself disliking her pictures. Then she looked to Ambrose again, very confused.

"Dr. Moreau? Whose.. that? The guy that's in charge of the art community thing?" she asked and kinda shrugged. "I guess.. if thats him. Yea for college credit. I still have a little bit of highschool left ahead of me, but a good handful of artists are allowed to get slightly early starts." she nodded to herself excitedly. "Oh Im from Oregon. Well, born their but we move around from time to time so I just say Im from there. Eh.. dunno why my parent's named me it. It's strange but its a really cool name I think."

She never really did worry about her name. It was one of those things everyone tended to gte used to after a while. What really seemed to intrigue her was that the two -possibly- knew who the big man was. But Dr. Moreau didn't sound like an artist's name.. just didn't to her at least. Maybe he just goes by it because he's rich. she thought, then kind of shook it out of her mind.

Turning back to Greer Hargun smiled. "Well its good to hear that. I'm not the biggest fan of bugs, but I think they're important too.. just as much as any other larger or more powerful animal that walks on the earth. And I dunno why but when theyre on those walls theyre just.. ugh."

Ambrose Maurlias
Ambrose swallowed. The last thing he wanted to do was perpetuate Moreau's lie, and make it sound like it was "okay". He wasn't going to let them beat him or anyone else that they snared into this prison. He... he just wished that someone else was better equipped to break the bad news. the last thing he needed was to be responsible, even indirectly, for someone to .... take it as badly as Julian.

"It is a rather fascinating name" Ambrose admitted. "Moreau...." He scratched the back of his head. "I.. I personally wouldn't call him an artist... though I suppose in a way he might be" his expression darkened. "Although the media that he ... shapes... isn't exactly the most conventional or acceptable ones."

Hearing her talk about school made his heart ache - for her and himself. "I.... I don't know what to tell you, Hargun... I ... You may not have been given the whole story I'm truly afraid. I'm not... sure how useful your stay will be on your college career." He winced. "It certainly isn't goign to be benefitting mine." He finished cryptically, trying to ease her into the subject.

Greer Cassenwari
Listening to the two of them talk, Greer unconsciously shook her head. They were in college. Why did the doctor have to run experiments on kids so young?

"Your drawings are wonderful. You're a very talented artist."

She smiled sadly. Poor thing.

"We all came here for different reasons."

Hargun
Hargun seemed to notice the tid bit of negativity in the air. "So.. Dr. Moreau Im guessing isnt one of your favorite people?" she asked and smiled slightly shrugging. She hadnt met him nor heard a thing about him so she wouldnt know. She then gave Ambrose a sympathetic look. "Aw, comm'on Ambrose.. surely somethings going to benefit from this trip?" she said, kinda not knowing what to say honestly.

"Hmm.. so some of you arent here for the art thing?" she asked a little interested. "Then why did you come here?" she asked, trying to smile sweetly to brighten the mood back a little.

Ambrose Maurlias
Ambrose shuffled his feet in the sand a bit. "Greer's right... she's was here supposedly competing for a research position collecting insect.... I was here for a medical study. The reason they told me seems to be the most accurate." Ambrose gritted his teeth.

"They told me they were paying 5 Grand for a two week study to test out some experimental therapy drugs. I arrived here a few days past two weeks ago. They're not letting me go. They're not letting any of us go." Ambrose said sternly, his eyes saying that he wasn't joking in the least.

"And I'm willing to bet you, that in a few weeks, Moreau won't be one of your favorite people either."

Greer Cassenwari
Putting her notebook away, she put a sympathetic hand on Ambrose's shoulder. "Strange medical things are happening here, and none of them are overly enjoyable. Tell me, what excuse did Ms. Aubrey give you for sticking a needle in your arm?"

Hargun
As hard as she may have attempted, she couldnt exactly smile as much anymore, and just looked.. out there. She was still trying to tell herself they were here for the samereason she was until she shook her head out of realizing Greer's question.

"Oh.. uhm. Well she was acting wierd and stuff about changing us into animals. Obviously she was joking with her little growling act but eh.. she sounded more serious when she said we were getting injections for preventing diseases here on the island." she said, and looked at the apot on her arm, rubbing it just out of the mental feeling of it being pinched.

Ambrose Maurlias
Ambrose boggled. "She said that? Turning you into animals?" Ambrose shook his head at the gall to pass off the truth as a joke like that. He swalowed, and scratched at the back of his neck again in his nervous habit. Perhaps this is how he had so easily struck a chord with her the night before.... and it made sense. He thought he had heard the helicopter bringing new arrivals.

"I... I'm afraid that what I'm about to tell you might sound... quite unbelievable, Miss Hargun.... and that it really, really isn't pleasant." He took a breath. "If you don't want to know, now is the time to say it."

Greer Cassenwari
Greer visibly flinched at Hargun's account of her introduction to the island. Ms. Aubrey was a ballsy little...something, wasn't she?

"She wasn't joking." she spoke quietly, letting the quality of the girl's hearing determine whether or not she heard her.

Hargun
Not knowing what to say Hargun kinda stared blankly at them both. She didn't know if she was laughing, crying, smiling, or just trembling. Instead she just fell back and looked up at the sky and Ambrose and Greer. "So... this.. isnt an artist community... Dr Moreau isnt.. the kind wealthy person offering scholarships..." she kept muttering things. She felt as if she was in a book or at least reading one about herself.

But no way could it be true.. or.. could it? She took another good look at Ambrose and finally realized that he wasnt wearing parts of a fursuit. He was definately changing into something in-human. As for Greer, the seriousness of her voice just piled up to the thoughts that raced trhough Hargun's mind at the moment.

She continued.. "and.. and.. that wasnt a vaccine.. was it..?" The welt on her arm seemed to hurt but again only mentally. Hargun sat back up and stared at it. "I.. I think I should go back to my room now..." she said, slowly standing back up, her knees shaking, and her sketchbook firmly in her grasp.

"It.. it was nice meeting you two.." she choked, and stumbled up the beach, darting as quickly as she could to her duplex were she planned to remain for the rest of the afternoon.

Ambrose Maurlias
"Hargun - Wait~!" He called futilely after her. Great.... just great.... His shoulders slumped and his eyes once more returned to the sand that was clinging to the fur on his feet. "Perfect. Bloody perfect. I... I wish I had more tact when it came to this. I... I know how she feels... and I wish someone had warned me before I woke up to ... this!" He gestured vaguely. "But... it's never goign to be easy, is it..?" He turned to Greer seriously.

"I... " he shook his head. "It hurts... to see all of us... seeing the lives that he's pulling us away from... "

He fell to a squat, his elbows resting on his knees. "I hope she'll be alright... not that I'm one to talk..." He looked back up to Greer. "How... how about yourself...? They haven't given you your second shot yet, have they? And... have you had any luck with the staff...? I... I've spoken a little to Aubrey myself..." He shook his head, his expression conveying his success. "She.... She's not immoral.... but... She doesn't run the Island either."

Greer Cassenwari
Gah! Greer smacked herself. She always broke everything!

"No, no more shots yet. And I haven't had a chance to- I mean, that is- Uh, I've been busy." She looked away, fidgeting with a shoulder strap. "So many butterflies to collect and catalog, you know! Speaking of, I should probably go - I haven't caught nearly as many today as I meant to."

She felt bad leaving him, but she couldn't bring herself to admit that she'd pruposely avoided seeking out Ms. Aubrey. That she was desperately afraid if she did, she'd end up part animal like Ambrose.

"Feel better, okay? Don't beat yourself up." Giving him a last half-hearted smile, she disappeared back into the jungle.

The Beach Bar, part 1

The Dude XD
THE BEACH:

The Dude was laying on the sand, sunbathing. He had been diving here with Karam iin the morning and now he was taking a nap. AH, NAPS WERE THE BEST XD

Greer Cassenwari
Why did butterflies on this island like the beach so much? It wasn't as if there was anything for them to eat there. It must have been the salt.

Unwillingly drawn to the seaside once again, Greer dragged her feet as she followed her latest quarry along the sand. She wasn't entirely sure why, but her heart just wasn't in catching insects today. Deep in her glum daydreaming, she didn't notice the Dude as she passed him slowly.

The Dude XD
Hearing the faint foot steps on the sand, the Dude opened one eye lazilly to look around.

Greer.

He waved his flipper in the air to call her attention, trying to lazilly remember when it was that he last saw her - before or after he grew whiskers.

"Hey there!"

Greer Cassenwari
A familiar voice! Greer looked up smiling, more than happy to see the Dude and bask in his cheerful presence- she froze for a moment, catching sight of him. Wow. He'd changed.

Plopping down on the sand beside her friend, she raised an eyebrow. "Your second injection already?"

Lauren Granger
Lauren had gathered a lunch and was planning on spending the day at the Beach again. She was wearing her swim suit and her saroung. The Doc had been nice enough to give her the day off without lessons so she had nothing else to do. She was starting to develop a great tan and some muscle tone from all her escapes to the beach.

She saw that a lady she didn't know and the Dude were already there. She smiled and waved.
"Hey!" she said happily.

The Dude XD
"Yeah" - the Dude nodded and smiled. "It wasn't so bad and I can swim better now. How you've been?"

He sat down on the sand and looked up at Greer thru his blond dreadlocks. It was pretty clear that the Dude had not been sahving recently wheter because he was lazy or because it was hard to shave around the whiskers was anyone's guess. But the five o'clock shadow had turned into real scruffy beard.

"Hey Thorn! Wassup girl?" - he also waved at Lauren, motioning her to come over as well.

Greer Cassenwari
"Good. Collecting lots of butterflies." She sounded a little sad, but did her best to supress it. She'd never been one to lament to friends, as she'd never had any.

She grinned a little at him. "I think it suits you, somehow."

Glancing up at the new arrival, her jaw almost dropped open. God that girl was young!

Lauren Granger
Thorn came over smiling at the Dude, "What happened to you?" She was playing dumb but not doing a very good job at it. She hated dramatics sometimes.

She went over and saw the other girl was gawking at her. Nervously she covered up with her saroung some more tying it like a dress as she gave her an odd look. "Hey, I'm Thorn." but really she wanted to say 'What the hell is your problem?!'.

The Dude XD
Turnign towards Thorn, the Dude replied, showing off his extra large feet and hands: "I'm not sure whether you heard or not, but the good doctor is not in the teen porn buisness after all. He is instead into animals and fluffy tails."

Turnign back to Greer, the Dude scratched his scruffy face and then his head: "I supose so. Better this then, you know, something that hates water. Why are you still collecting butterflies, Greer? Do you like that?"

Ambrose Maurlias
The already filling beach was soon met with a new figure.

Ambrose.... felt better.... since his time thinking the day before. He didn't feel great, admittedly, but the chaos that his life seemed to have been breaking down into seemed to have some more structure now.

Now, however, he needed to get out. He didn't like spending his days cooped in the apartment, fur or no, even if yesterday did seem to help.

Putting on his nice long swimtrunks, a big shirt, and grabbing his rapier, he headed for the beach to see if anything was going on, and if not, to practice in the warm sands.

He soon discovered that he was anything but alone as he saw the familiar lounging shape of the Dude, along with Greer, and a painfully skinny young woman conversing.

He approached slowly, casually, with an attempt at a smile. "Hi..."

Greer Cassenwari
Mentally smacking herself, Greer smiled at the girl. "Hello! I'm Greer. Nice to meet you."

"Hmm?" She turned back to the Dude, shrugging her shoulders and not meeting his eyes. "Oh, no reason. There's a lot of them around here, and outght to be cataloged."

God, that was a bad excuse... meep! Ambrose!

Lauren Granger
Thorn gawked at the Dude having trouble taking her eyes off of him. She had seen his trasformation over the monitor but seeing it in real life was amazing. She tried to hide this amazement as being stunned and shocked, feining sympathy.

"Well, at least he's not a perv and I bet you could beat me anytime now at swimming." She tried to look concerned but on the inside she was laughing.

Her attention went towards the new person. The first man that she had seen transform and her heart skipped a beat remembering the emotions she felt watching that very transformation.

So that was Ambrose...

"Hey," She said trying not to blush.

The Dude XD
Judging by Greer's reaction, the Dude figured that the subject shoudl be best left in peace. If this was the way she was dealing with the news, it was a good way of dealing with it. Well, good for her, bad for the bugs, but you know ...

Waving a greeting at approaching Ambrose, the Dude then turned back to Lauren: "Well, he might not be a perv, but to be honest, i could swim just fine without these things. The fact that he chose the sea lion for me doesn't make him a good guy all of a sudden." - he said a bit gruff.

Part of him was glad that he didn't have to break Lauren the news. The other part was amazed that the street kid seemed to be taking this so well ...

Ambrose Maurlias
Ambrose nodded to Greer, summoning up a smile for her. He was glad she had something to focus on, he though, seeing her with the butterfly net again.

He just hoped that when it did sink in how long she was destined to stay here that it didn't kill her.

He looked to Lauren, swallowing and stiffening his courage. If she was talking to teh Dude then she obviously knew what was going on. "Hello." He said with a smile back and a half-bow half-headnod. "I don't believe we've met.... My name is Ambrose" He reached out to shake her hand, and as he did so, his brows furrowed as he looked past her.

THere was definately something new on the beach... he did't remember a small structure down the sands from where he was standing, and he had explored the beach pretty well since he had begun frequenting it...

Greer Cassenwari
Greer fiddled with her net, snapping it in the breeze. Goodness, so many people...

"Hi Ambrose!" she smiled back at him, vaguely aware of a sadness in him. Was he ever going to be okay?

Lauren Granger
Lauren looked at the Dude. He obviously didn't see the bright side of the situation. Selfish b*****d.

"Well, might as well make the most of it, your stuck now." She put her arms across her chest. Damn, it was going to be hard to convince these morons that things were better for them now thanks to Doc. And she hated hearing people talk bad about him.

Her attention was caught again by Ambrose, "Nope, haven't met you yet. I'm Thorn." She looked at the outreaching hand for a moment before quickly shaking it.

She turned to see what he was looking at.

The Dude XD
The Dude gave Lauren a sidelong look. O ... key ... Teenage angst hormones, maybe? Deciding not to try and figure what the young lady was pissed about now, instead turned towards the direction everyone else was looking at.

Hm.

Well, this was new.

Draggin sand with his flippers as he walked, the Dude walked towards this new addition to the sceneray. After about 20 fet he stopped and there was a stunned pause.

"Hot damn. It's a BEACH BAR!"

Hargun
Hargun walked out her duplex door and stretched. Well, need to go back to the beach... I think Ill color my sketch this time.. gotta clean itup though she thought to herself and snagged her sketchbook. She looked towards the beach and slowly walked, trying to look around in her knapsack for her utensils at the same time; almost dropping them every now and then.

The beach came into veiw along with four people, three of them she had already met. Uh.. they look pretty old.. she said to herself and hesitated. Well... maybe theyll be interested in giving me some tips or something..

She trotted down and waved excitedly to them. "Heya Ambrose and Greer! And.. heya other people!" she smiled.

Ambrose Maurlias

Ambrose gave Lauren a firm handshake and a nod, though looked at her quite strangely at her acessment of the Dude. Had she just realized what was going on just now? And if so, didn't she think it was in the least bit... strange? Did she even know the details about how the Doctor wasn't even going to allow them to leave?

"Good to meet you, Thorn" He replied, though there was a bit of hesitance in his voice.

He watched as the Dude realized what the new addition was. "Beach bar??" Ambrose blinked, surprised. That certainly was new

Greer Cassenwari
Greer stood, dusted herself off, and peered at the odd building. "A bar? Is it stocked?"

Not that she drank much, as that was generally a social thing, but she did know how to make a few drinks. Starbucks hadn't been the only type of watering hole she'd worked at to get through higher education.

Turning at the sound of her name, she smiled at the approaching Hargun. "Hello again, Ms. Artiste! How are you?"

Lauren Granger
Lauren smiled at Ambrose, "Thanks, it's good to meet you too." She smiled at the feel of his furry hand.
Lauren looked as yet another person walked up to the beach. It seemed like nearly everyone in the town was here.
"Hey" This one seemed younger than even her. That was a good thing, she hated being 'the kid' on the island.

"Looks, like Doc treated us with a beach bar." She said smiling. He was wonderful to them and they didn't even see it. They were too busy worrying about their former lives and roles to enjoy what he had given them. She picked up her stuff and started walking over to check it out.

The Dude XD
"I dunno, but there is only one wasy to find out" - the Dude smiled at Greer and walked all the way over to the bar, starting to snoop around behind the counter.

"Yeah. Yeah it is!" - came the excited words from the depth of the fridge he was investigating. Apparentlyh that byatch of the scientist had also managed to bring electricity to the beach. Well, hot damn indeed.

Hargun
Hargun nodded and smiled again then hurried down faster tripping slightly here and there. "Hi hi." she said to Thorn and tried to lok around for a spot to get comfortabe. "So... whats everyone up to?" she immediately asked, and sat down on a rock shaped well for leaneing back against.

She flipped out hr sketchbook and pulled her tools next to her and started to get back to work her drawings.

Ambrose Maurlias
Still surprised at "Thorn's" acceptance, but deciding not to question it, at least for the moment, he put his hands back into his pocket and walked over to where the dude was with a curious look.

"A beach bar..." he tested the words. Alcohol. Perhaps this was a way of his of either satiating the subjects - or giving them an outlet for frustration other than him.

Aubrey Lockheart
Moreau lead Aubrey out to the beach, to the beach bar that he'd been having set up. It was pretty, made with bamboo and wood to look particurally "beachy" the lower section was built with sturdy metal cabnets to hold alchohol, and locks so that it could be closed. The wooden bar stools were attatched to the structure but it looked like Moreau had built some open area for new chair like attachments to be built for those that may be a lot less human.

"So what do you think Aubrey? I built it for the islanders," Moreau grinned. "I am hoping perhaps by providing them some alchohol they'll calm down a bit. Besides," he kissed Aubrey passionately. "I was hoping you'd like it..."

Aubrey kissed Moreau back happily. "Mmm.. .I think I like it!" With an impish grin on her face dashed behind the bar, already opening up some of the cabinents and admiring the selection. She had changed into a sarong, beach sandals, and some shell jewelry for theri walk, and even found a hibiscus flower to tie into her hair. With a sly smile she leaned far over the bar. "What can I get you, Handsome?"

How about a "Taihitian ********" Moreau grinned wickedly "... it should be on the drink list we have over there."

Moreau motioned to a drink list that was hidden on top of the metal containers. "But first maybe an "Aubrey" but I don't think that's on any drink list." Moreau smiled and leaned forward again.

"Oh, I've never had one of those before..." she grinned pulled him forward, pulling him close to kiss him from the other side of bar

Greer Cassenwari
Greer followed her friends, keeping closer to those she knew than the new people. "If anyone wants drinks mixed I can..."

Her voiced trailed off, startled by the appearance of the Doctor and Aubrey. People she was skitish about kissing. Oy vey.

The Dude XD
The Dude froze in his tracks, as he emerged from behind the bar with a bottle of Kahlua and a pair of glasses in his hands and found himself nose to nose with Moreau and Aubrey.

Moreau and Aubrey making out, to be specific.

There was a pregnant pause.

Then the Dude tried to scramble over the coutner, the bottle still in hand, after Moreau. The good doctor should have been very familiar with all the things the Dude wanted to do to him after the Karma incident.

Lauren Granger
Thorn came up to the beach bar in the mass group to find Doc and Aubrey kissing. Gah, why did they have to do that in front of her. She guessed they had no clue that she was there.
"Hey Doc" Thorn greeted. This was going to be awkward. She needed the other villagers to trust her but did they need to know that she had been taught science by the doctor. They definately wouldn't trust her then.

She thought it best to stay quiet about the subject.

Ambrose Maurlias
Ambrose came up behind the Dude, his eyes widening and .... swallowing.

HE was there. On the beach. and... and... kissing Dr. Lockheart. He ... he had SOME nerve!

His hackles rising, Ambrose walked over as well. Scared.... and yet hopeful and angry - all the emotions tumbling in his chest as he strode forward, questions already springing to mind.

Hargun
Hargun huffed to herself as everyone seemed to be getting up to go to the bar. Urgh.. I hate being left ou of thing.. she jogged up skechbook in hand to where the others seemed to clutter and noticed Moreau and Aubrey kissing. It hadnt been -that- much of a suprise considering when she met up with the two walking the beach earlier. Instead of really doing much she watched the Dude scrambling about and Ambrose advancing fowards. Thoughts about the past meetings with him and greer, and then aubrey and moreau seemed to try and rear up again.

Lauren Granger
Thorn acted out of pure instincts and darted in between the Dude and the Doctor. What was with this beach bum anyway?
"Woah there!" She said, looking very angry. "What the ******** are you trying to prove?! You need to chill... now." She exclaimed as she pushed the Dude back. She had to protect the Doc, he was the only person she trusted on the island.

Greer Cassenwari
Feeling hackles she hadn't even known she'd had, Greer frowned at Thorn. Who in their right mind stood for the Doctor over the Dude? She felt herself want to do something confrontational, which was strange enough to make her blink and pause. Is this what having friends did to a person?

Settling for looking after her other friend so she could avoid exploring these offensive feelings, she placed a hand on Ambrose's shoulder. "Hey now." she said softly, trying to calm.

The Dude XD
The Dude had not been expecting to get decked like that. Loosing his footing he fell on his a**, grabbing onto things in the process, most likely Thorn herself.

"What the ********, Thorn! Since when did that d**k over there make you his pet lap dog? You haven't even started growing ******** ears yet! What's your ******** problem?!" - he lost it.

That had been a once in a life time chance, and this girl wasted it. The Dude wasn't perfectly clear what exactly he woudl have done, had he actually gotten to the doctor, but he didn't exaclty had the tiem to plan.

Lauren Granger
The Dude had grabbed onto Lauren making her loose balance and fall to the ground as well. She didn't mean to push him that hard, her anger must have taken over.

Her face turned bright red. Oh no he did NOT just say ******** you Fatass!" And then her fist went straight to his face.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer flinched. She wanted to help the Dude, but had no idea how.

Hargun
Hargun tried to back up behind Greer and Ambrose for protection. Her eyes were wide with both terror and a hint of humor. just rather funny what they were calling each other ws all.

Okay.. hw did this all happen.. and why tdid that one flipper guy freak out and start attacking Moreau? Knew artists could get crazy but.. wow.. this? She peered out from behind Greer and watched the fight but kept her feet ready to jump and/or run away if neccesary.

The Dude XD
The Dude was stunned when Thorn upercutted him right in the jaw.

OW, the brat packed quite a punch! What the hell was the kid's problem?!

"Hey, cut it out ... you brat. OW! I said cut it out" - he protested when she clobbered him for the second time. Catching her flailing hands at the wrists to ward off any more punches he tried to push her off himself. Stupid brat. One woudl think he tried to attack her father or soemthing.

A scary thought shot thru the Dude's brain. He looked at Lauren's scowling face, then at Moreau's haughty expression. Oh, phew ... no resemblance.

But still.

WTF?!

Doctor Moreau
As the Dude was wrestling with Lauren he suddenly felt the world swirl before him. As though he had just been knocked unconcience he fell forward slumping against the doctor. This was happening just as Lauren likely did something close to a sleeper hold. Everything went dark as the chip in the back of "The Dude's" neck had sent a neural shock to knock him out. It could be substained or he could be woken up as well.

"Now... calm down everyone. Just take a small break Mr. Carroll"

Greer Cassenwari
"Dude!" Greer leapt forward, concern for her friend overridding her natural tendency to avoid conflicts. Kneeling next to him, she glared at Doctor Moreau.

"You made this happen."

Lauren Granger
Thorn was totally fired up but started to gain control of herself. After a twist of her wrist and a huge kick to his crotch she was free and able to stand up.

"You stupid ******** moron." She was yelling at the Dude who was still on the floor but she held her punches... for now. "Yeah, you'll take and take and take from the Doc but then ya turn around and try to deck him." She kicked him again... couldn't stop herself. "How ******** selfish is that!" Thorn was breathing heavily as she pulled her hair out of her brown eyes.

"Maybe you should try to show the man a little respect for once!" She stepped back crossing her arms across her chest her eyes on the webbed fat man in front of her.

It was only after that she realised the Doc had done something to knock the Dude out and she was kicking a man while he was down.

She stopped and looked guiltily at the Doc. "Sorry." She said like a child who knew they just did something wrong.

Aubrey Lockheart
AUbrey's eyes went wide as her kiss was rudely interupted by a group of irate islanders. She hadn't expected this, much less a fight.

"DUDE!' She yelled as he went after Moreau. She dived to put herself between Moreau and the Dude, but then Lauren launched herself at him.

"THORN?! She screamed, and went to grab for her her. "Get off him!"

This was embarassing. How the hell was she supposed to convince the islands she was wanting to be their friend when she's caught sucking face with a man they hated,. Ah well, at least that wasn't a big secret or anything. Still embarassing.

And worst of all, she new the moment she went to grab for Lauren it looked like she was taking the Dude's side.

But then the Dude fell over unconscious. The chip...of course...

She stood there in shock for a moment. Her face burning red, she stepped away from Lauren and the Dude and went back to stand by Moreau like a good girl.

Ambrose Maurlias
The world seemed to be moving at three times the speed Ambrose could react.
First thing he saw Aubrey - who said that she wanted to try to help them as much as she could - MAKING OUT with the Doctor! He knew she loved him, but for God's sake the least she could do was keep the important things in mind if she really was trying to get him to listen to reason... unless that WAS her way of doing it.

Then... the doctor. HIM. The person who was responsible for ALL of this. HE didn't blame the Dude at all when he went for him with a bottle in hand. Admittedly, it would probably do more harm than good but he could certainly see the needed stress relief - and then, that new girl - the skinny one - of all things interposed herself! Who's side was she on?! Was she working for the doctor? SHe looked way too young to be a lab tech, but she seemed happy about the changes the Dude was going through, and had hardly mentioned his own - certainly wasn't hesitant to shake his hand.

Then the punches flew..... Ambrose had been in plenty of matches - where wits and blades made the diference - but no one got hurt past a few bruises or perhaps the stray accident with a broken blade. He had never - in all of his upbringing - actually resorted to flying fists. He had lived in good neighborhoods. And when his reactions should be lightning fast, he found himself staring. Greer's steadying hand on his shoulder was all that was needed to keep his cool instead of jumping to the mess. That wouldn't help thing.

When the dude came crashing to his knees at the Doctor's command.... that sent chills down his spine. What... what kind of power did he have over them!? And.... did he have it over all of them? The situation seemed to get all that more serious - feeling less and less in control.

Ambrose stepped forward "What did you do?!" He demanded to Moreau, and then turning to Lauren "Why.... why did you attack him?! why.... how do you know the Doctor and why are you defending him?!"

Everything seemed on its head as he joined Greer's side in kneeling by the Dude and checking for a pulse... please say he didn't have control over their lives at a word.

Hargun
Hargun's eyes were wide. What... in the hell.. just happened...

Apparently not being here that long had caused her so much confusion as to what was going on, so all she could do was wait and watch. she turned to Greer Ambrose and the Dude, then flashed her head back to Lauren, Moreau and Aubrey.

Who was doing what for which reason? Smacking her head hard she zipped over towards Ambrose and Greer and inspected the Dude. "Is.. will he be okay?" she asked quietly not knowing what the hell to do.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer look beseechingly at Ambrose. Surely he knew how to make this better? She vaguely remembered the human anatomy class she'd been required to take as an undergrad, but nothing useful was coming to mind. All she could think of was horse condoms. It had been a strange class.

"Is he okay?"

Lauren Granger
Lauren shot a look at Ambrose. All former attraction towards him dropped as he asked her the dumbest question ever.

All these people were idiots and she couldn't wait to see them in pain.

"Have you ever been on the street with no food for a week straight, fighting the rats for the junk food you have stolen from the one last convieniant store in town that didn't know to call the cops as soon as they saw your dirty face?!" She fought back the tears. She shouldn't start crying in front of these morons but her eyes were watering up and her face was beet red. "Well, I don't have to do that anymore!" She went over to the doctor and leaned up against him like a lost child hoping for some comfort. "And I don't want to go back."

The Dude XD
The Dude remained on the ground, still blissfully out for the most part. Cute little birdies were flying around his head, chirping happy songs. He felt excrutiating pain in the nether regions and so groaned a little. But the birdies were just too happy and so he kinda lay in the sand, watching them, with a stupid grin on his face.

Aubrey Lockheart
Aubrey glared at Lauren and dropped down next to the Dude after grabbing a water from the bar. She pushed everyone else near him away. "Give him some air!" she snapped. She put a hand under the Dude's head. "You'll be okay there, buddy," she said, a forced friendly calm in her tone. "Just a little nap..."

Doctor Moreau
Moreau put an arm around Aubrey and pulled her to him. "It's very rude to interrupt us on my island. So unless anyone else wants to take a nap like Mr. Carroll did, a longer one they won't try something like that again."

Moreau looked stern, "Including you Lauren, understand, I can do this with any one of you. Now I am here with Aubrey, and I intend to have a Taihitian ********." Moreau sat back down on the stool and took Aubrey with him.

"Screaming at me isn't going to do any of you any good... someone get me a drink." Moreau said angerly.

Ambrose Maurlias
Ambrose ran a nervous hand through his hair as he tried to take that steadying breath. The dude was alright... at least. but he felt a seething anger boiling under the surface at the Doctor's casual disregard of their fates, and Lauren's rose-tinted glasses. With a practiced determination he stepped forward and smothered that anger with a calm facade of control. while the anger snarled more ferociously beneath the surface than it ever used to, he held it back. Getting angry might very well just end him up unconscious on the sand like the Dude and in even worse favor with this "Thorn", the Doctor, AND his only salvation that he had seen yet here, Aubrey.

"That's wonderful, Thorn. I'm glad for you. But not all of us were "saved" here. Many of us were taken from a life that we were happy with. And I'm not sure how informed you are, but from what I've heard we're to stay here for the rest of our lives, not given a choice."

He stepped forward again, his hand still clenching his epee, but it remained by his side, the tip down and non-threateningly.

He took a breath and directed himself towards Aubrey and teh Doctor. "I.... I've heard a lot. I've heard from Aubrey we're to be turned into Animals.... or animal-people... and several of us have begun already. I need answeres. Honest ones, regardless of the good or the bad. Aubrey told me that we would likely get cancer if the "experiment" stops midway through. Is... is that true Dr. Moreau?"

His knuckles were white, and he glanced back to the rest, knowing they needed to hear this.

Hargun
Again with that animal thing! Hargun shivered. Haha... okay now.. jokes over.. you've all pranked me... pulled a fake fight.. and we can all go back to being nice to each other... please? was what she really wanted to say.

But the fight was real.. they were real.. and what Ambrose meant was real.

She listened very intently to Ambrose.. not making a word or sound, other than shaking slightly in the spot she had been moved to away from the Dude. For the rest of my life... here... no.. that cant be right.. 'saved'? Animal-people... ARGH.. somebody just tell us EXACTLY whats happening! she shouted to herself in her head.

Greer Cassenwari
Stepping away from the fallen Dude slowly at Aubrey's request, Greer looked worriedly from one person to another. Although she fenced, she hated actual conflict and wanted nothing to do with it, especially when it resulted in her friends being hurt. Was there any way she could defuse the situation some?

Moving quickly and quietly, she slipped behind the bar and began mixing drinks, helping in the one way she knew how. Glancing at the instruction cards a few times, she finished the Doctor's desired refreshment in front of him and said softly. "Can I get anyone anything?"

Lauren Granger
Lauren's head was confused as conflict swirled around her head rapidly. A tear ran down her cheek as she was hopeless to stop pain from showing.

"I'm sorry doctor." She said as she moved away to a stool at the edge of the bar. She heard what Ambrose said but remained quiet as she dug her nails into the bar's wood trying to distract herself from the unbearable pain.

The Dude XD
Groggily, the Dude opened his eyes, to stare at the proceding around him: Moreau was being served a drink by Greer, Thorn was standing in the corner, looking crushed, Ambrose was talking up a storm at Moreau while the young red head he didn't know was standing a bit further away in the sand, looking confused.

The Dude was coonfused as well. How in hell was scrawny Thorn been able to knock him out flat like that? AND kick him in the crotch (which still hurt, by the by). Damn. And why did she look so sad now?

There was Aubrey hovering around him, saying something. He smiled at her, not sure quite why, then looked bleakly stared at the bottle of Kahlua that was laying in the sand a few feet away from him, then at Moreau's head. So close ...

"Hi Aubrey. Nice bikini." - he finally squeesed it out of himself.

Aubrey Lockheart
Aubrey opened her mouth to respond to the Dude when Moreau pulled her towards him. He gave him mournful look, but got up at his command and sat next to him. She dutifully help onto Moreau as he barked his drink order. She got up to fill it, but the Bug-lover beat her to it. So she settleed back down. The doctor was angry, and even though it wasn't at her, this made her upset and nervous.

Ambrose was asking a lot of hard questions, and she tried to shrink away from him. She held herself closer to Moreau, for some reason feeling safer around him, but her eyes kept darting worriedly over to The Dude.

She shook her head meekly when Greer asked if anyone else wanted a drink, and she gave a weary look to Lauren. She had seemed to grow very attached to the doctor rather quickly.

Doctor Moreau
"Thank you Ms. Cassenwari" Moreau said before making note of anything Ambrose said. If he was nothing else, he was well mannered.

"Will you not allow me to enjoy a drink with my girlfriend Mr. Maurlias?" Moreau sipped the drink and leaned a bit in the bar stool.

After Moreau realized that Ambrose's earnest eyes were burning into the back of his skull. He took another sip and turned around. "Yes, Mr. Maurlias, the genetic instability could cause cancer. What has been started has to be completed. It could take years, but your cells would be extremely very likely to cause it."

Moreau leaned with his arm around Aubrey. "Aubrey is very intelligent, more than all of you I would assume, of course everything she said would be true. Everything." Moreau took another sip as he looked back at Ambrose.

"And just in case Mr. Carroll didn't catch it, unless he wants to end up back on the ground he'll need to refrain from physical violence." Moreau looked... smug.

Ambrose Maurlias
Ambrose watched as Aubrey returned to Moreau's side like a loyal dog. He swallowed, seeing the play of power obvious before him. She was concerned about the Dude... Ambrose didn't believe that she was heartless... no, not after his last discussion with her. And from the Dude's descriptions of hers. But even if she believed differently from Moreau, how could she even bear to say anything contrary to what he thought or said.... how would she really try to play on HIS questionable remains of a conscience...?

Ambrose listened to his words. Of course, that is what he would say, even if it WASN'T true.... but.... the way he said it.... Ambrose was pretty sure it was. with the control he just depicted over the Dude.... he could knock them unconscious if he wanted to with hardly a movement... the security here was more than he had ever seen before. Even if they had hope of escaping alive - he was pretty damn sure that at the very least Moreau was confident in his security. SO.... it was probably the truth. He and all the rest were sentenced to life here... or death in freedom.... at least until the transformation reached its eventual completion - whatever that left them.

"I.... see..." He swallowed. "Unstable" He scratched at his arm. "I understand"

"Look.... Doctor, I understand - and I believed Aubrey... but.... I wanted to hear it from your own mouth. I... I don't know if you understand that I wish more than anything that I could be sitting and having a drink with my girlfriend, and I'm sure that there are things that the rest of us would love to be doing as well, if you will forgive my intrusion of questions regarding mine and all the rest of our fates that have been presing on my mind."

So here was the time for it. "So ... it's too late for the rest of us. you have us, but.... can I ask, implore that in the future - if you do need more.... test subjects, that you bring people like Thorn who would want to be here..? People who coming here would be a sanctuary.... people who would want this and not have a family... a lover.... a future... that they were being stolen away from? If the issue is "psychology"... then please keep in mind that by coming here and locking us away from what we consider important that you're throwing a big variable in there already - and that whatever "reaction" we have to this test is going to be out of whack anyway. Hell.... if you let us go back... I'm sure many of us would be willing to continue the injections - sworn to secrecy or whatever you want.... especially faced with the option of death if we didn't..... but.... able to go home again..... see those we care about again.?"

Hargun
"So..so its true then, Dr. Moreau sir?" Hargun mumbled still sitting, still shaking, still tramatized and confused. But it was obvious now. And considering how everyone else was turning out, yelling at Dr. Moreau was beyond stupid now.

I dont even know if I need you anymore.. theres no point to you now.. she thought looking at the now pointless sketchbook she always pulled around. Sighing she leaned back and tried to relax. She couldnt cry, shout, rant or anything.. the others had done it already for her. But she couldnt help rubbing her now red puffy eyes, preventing herself from seriously breaking down.

"Greer.. could.. could you please get me a glass of water.." she asked quietly, just trying to avoid somehow being magneted deeply into the converstaion.

Greer Cassenwari
Nodding, Greer moved quickly behind the bar and produced requested beverage. Poor Ambrose. She could hear the defeat and pain in his voice, and hurt her ears. Perhaps it was wrong of her not to want to go home as much as he did - she certainly wouldn't have chosen this strange place had she known the truth of it from the start - but when she thought about it, she realized she had very little to go back to. Her mother had a new family to care for, and there was not a single friend or colleague back in Seattle to note her disappearance concernedly. She had far more to lose in the way of people here on the island than back at home. Strange.

She wanted to stay and stand with Ambrose. To look after the Dude. But this was a conflict of wills, and outside of the realm of insects, Greer's had never been very strong.

"Excuse me," she said, stepping out from behind the bar. Stopping to give Ambrose's shoulder a squeeze, she asked him to look after the Dude. Inclining her head respectfully to Aubrey and Doctor Moreau, she beat a hasty retreat back home, running to the calm safety of cataloging butterflies. They tended not to yell.

Lauren Granger
Lauren couldn't take it anymore, too much preasure and the memories were swirling around her head. She felt like she was going to vomit.

Several thoughts seemed to swirl around her head all at once.

Moreau was over there and was not going to comfort her. He was too busy having fun. So much for him being the dad she never had.

After that episode, so much for ever making any friends here. The Dude was loved by everyone it seemed, and she had liked him alright at first until he went for the doctor.

The doctor had threatened her, he would make her drop just like the Dude if he desired. She hated not being able to control herself. She realised that her life was better now, but she had lost her freedom.

She had lost all that she ever was.... again. And again she had lost her identity to a controlling cold a*****e.

This was too much conflict for her right now. She got up from the barstool in a hurry throwing it aside and stomping out of the room in a fit of teenage angst, rage, and pain.

The Dude XD
"Yeah yeah yeah, Dr. Dickkopf. Your balls are way bigger then mine. And you've got trained assassin chicks on your side. Touche' " - the Dude stood up and shook the sand off his trunk.

Picking up the bottle of Kahlua from the sand next to him he walked over behind the bar. Thorn, her eyes red from fury and tears had just stormed by him out towards the village. He was about to catch her by the arm, but feared one of those uppercuts and just let her fly. He'd talk to her later to figure out how the hell she managed to knock him flat on his a**.

Once behind the bar, the Dude waved to Hargun to come closer, then opened the bottle of Kahlua and a few other things and made himself a White Russian.

Taking a sip of the sweet cocktail, which left a milk mustache on his whiskers he propped his head on his fist and listened to what Moreau had to say to Ambrose.

Doctor Moreau
Moreau sighed, and watched Lauren storm off. He'd have to make amends to Lauren later. He would, he'd grown attatched to her in some kind of twisted father figure way. Now his attention turned back to Ambrose even more angry than before. "Mr. Maurlias, Ms. Granger didn't even know she'd like being here till she was here, to be honest she fought tooth and nail not to come. You yourself were picked because it was odvious from your forms you were a former rich boy who'd been cut off from his income. There were assumptions that you'd respond better to not having to work and having everything paid for for you."

Moreau finished his drink and slammed it on the table "It is unfortunete that you were seperated from your significant other, but due to the nature of this entire project I can not make that kind of promise to you... now if I could, would I." Moreau glared at Ambrose.

"And you Mr. Carroll, you washed up here, it's amazing you avoided the reefs but it is not my fault you are on this Island. I seriously doubt you would have been so lucky and made it out of the area without damaging your boat on a reef. It is not my fault that you are here. In fact, if I had my choice you wouldn't be." Moreau was a bit... seething.

"Now, I believe this conversation is finished." Moreau looked firm, angry, but firm.

The Beach Bar, part 2

Aubrey Lockheart
As per her usual style when Moreau was around (at least in front of other subjects), Aubrey was uncharacteristicly silent. She looked very uncomfortable caught between the two "sides." Part of her very much sympathized, at least on some level, with the islanders, but her loyalty to Moreau was unshaken. She held onto his arm and bussed his drink glass for him when it was empty. She watched the uneasy confrontation, especially watching the faces of Ambrose and the Dude.

Ambrose Maurlias
Ambrose stood stock-still. He was about to say something about given Lauren's situation it could probably be extrapolated that she would have adjusted better to being brought here than someone like he who was enjoying his life until Moreau's words caught him.

For some reason, he realized with a numb feeling, he had just assumed that the Doctor had an omniscient knowledge of his past. He thought back to the inquiry forms he had to fill out to become eligible for the 'study'. It asked questions like his family situation and income levels... they probably could have gotten his credit history.... see his complete support by his parents up to a year ago. It was no secret also that he no longer spoke with his parents and had not for over a year. It was also no secret that he had never worked. And while he loved Angelina from the bottom of his heart... there was no ring on her finger. He had checked "unmarried" on the box as opposed to "engaged". And he competed in a sport, but how would they have known his dreams...? Nearly every young college-bound man was in some sort of sport....

He wondered just how many forms Moreau had shuffled through before his name was picked from the pile. Hearing everyone's diverse background... it made sense why he was the only one from that avenue that was picked. If they HAD picked a dozen people for the study and they all disappeared, that would have raised a lot of eyebrows. How many different "methods" were they getting people? How many rejected forms were there, and how did they decide...?

Ambrose thought darkly about how eager he was to get into the study, so much so that he may have even fudged a few of the questions on the application - not outright lied, but made it very obvious how badly he needed the money and how he certainly wouldn't be missing out on anything for being gone for "two weeks".

He stared at the ground. He had been hand-picked. Bloody lovely. The point of the epee in his hand wavered as his grip loosened; his whole body felt somewhat slack as the feeling washed over him.

Not only was his life screwed... but he had signed it away; begged for it.

"I... see" Ambrose managed weakly, trying to hold the thin composure of control.

He raised his eyes back to the Doctor, not sure what else he could say to him now.

Finally he found some words. He didn't want to incur more of the man's anger who literally held his life in his hands, but on the flip side, he coudln't leave letting Moreau think that what he was doing was okay, or that Ambrose was happy with it.

"I just wish... you could see things from where we stand, Doctor. I.... am well aware of how focused you are on what you are doing, but if you are doign this to truly 'benefit humanity' then shouldn't you have any sort of sympathy for the humans involved in your project unwittingly? For the losses that all of us have given up for your project? Please.... if you have any measure of sympathy, at least consider - if not now than sometime, allowing us some sort of contact with our loved ones - no matter how many forms we have to sign, or promises of secrecy.... they deserve to know."

He pulled in a breath, turning his back. "And please.... try... to not bring people here who do have things to lose.... do... more research or something." He sighed, looking over the people remaining at the scene, a ghost of an apologetic smile to Hargun, and a respectful nod to The Dude, and started walking back to the village as he pondered his and all of their fates.

The rest of their lives.... that... was a hell of a long time.

The Dude XD
"Really?" - the Dude grinned at Moreau with his milk mustache. "You mean if the island weren't here I'd die, of course? Well, that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy there, Doc. Rescuing my worhtless a** and all. Providing my life with meaning. Thanks!" - he raised the glass he was holding in a toast.

"Hey, would you mind handling the intro speeches yourself, too, then. Cuz I ain't no psychologist, and everytime I have to break the news to another teenager you drag up here, I think I am compromising their sanity. Ya know? You, as a Harvard graduate and a very brilliant and distinguished scholar shoudl be better at it anyway. Or do you prefer not to look your subjects in the eyes?"

Doctor Moreau
"Well, Mr. Carroll no one asked you to explain it to them. To be frank my primary goal is to get them to the village without having to restrain or sedate them. I'm sure you can appreciate that." Moreau sighed.

Moreau continued, "I have no interest in harming any of you, and have made attempts to make it as comfortable as possible. You don't have to like me, my methods, but atleast appreciate the fact that I have tried to not physically bring you harm. Outside of what is necessary for the study of course, and we are even working on that."

"Anyway, I believe Aubrey and I will be going now. Since I am unable to even enjoy a simple drink. Come Aubrey." Moreau stood up and began to walk off.

Aubrey Lockheart
Aubrey gave a pitiful look to the Dude, itching to say something to comfort Dude or Ambrose, but she feared saying anything too sympathetic towards them with Moreau there. She gave a weak wave goodbye as Moreau summoned her like a dog, and she hesitantly followed after him, clutching to his arm as they began to walk away.

The Dude XD
Yeah ... this a bit like talking to a wall there. The doctor clearly didn't see the problem with the situation at hand. How could he - he thought it up. It HAD to be flawless, if you put the ethics aspect aside.

The Dude grunted something non commital and whatched Moreau and Aubrey leave from the beach. As they were a bit further away he hollered after them:

"Thanks for the bar, Doc! I'm glad alcohol doesn't adversly affect your experiments. Otherwise it'd be pretty shitty here." - he raised his glass again then turned away to talk to Hargun who was watchign all these events unfolde with frightened, tear rimmed eyes.

Ambrose Maurlias
Ambrose heard the interchange of words, and at the Doctor's leaving, plopped down in the sand with a huff, folding his arms over his knees and looking out over the sea. Despite everything, all the nastiness.... at least the ocean was still the same...

And somewhere touched the United states....

He sighed, and glanced over his shoulder back at the Dude and Hargun, feeling especially sorry for the young artist who really had her whole life ahead of her.

"I think I may need a drink" Ambrose finally spoke up again.

Hargun
Hargun tried to sniffle back another round of tears to Ambrose and Moreau's conversation. But every time the Dude talked she almost grinned. Just the way he talked was helpful in keeping her from completely freaking..out.

She picked up her glass of water that Greer had given her and took a short and shaky gulp, then noticed the Dude comming over. Giving a weak smile, she lifted one of her hands from the glass and gave a slow, shaky wave, then looked over to Ambrose, and returned a sympathetic look.

Turning back to the Dude and managed to quietly say "Heya..."

Pyroth Ignatius
After having eaten his fill of the meat, Pyroth cam back down to earth from his adrenalin fueled hunger and once again resumed feeling pretty wretched. How the hell had he even gotten enough courage to venture out here, where everything seemed so much sharper than it had been, in both sound and smell. Still, if any of the other island inhabitants saw him and the pretty horrible changes (in his opinion) that he had gone through, they might freak out.

Come to think of it though, it had been some time since he had seen any of them anywhere. Venturing from the cafeteria on much quieter canine-esque feet, Pyroth listened as intently as he could to the air.

Muffled voices carried to him from not far off. His ears really were getting more acute, he couldn't be imagining it.

The Dude XD
"There ... there ..." - the Dude gently patted the sniffling girl on her back. "It's okey, sweetheart. It's all good. We are in it together and we'll make it thru somehow, right?"

He took another sip from his glass and swirled the ice cubes around in the glass. They clinked ever so faintly against each other.

"I'm the Dude here, and this is Ambrose." - he introduce himself then asked, still patting her on the back: "So what's your name? And what's your sketchbook all about, hmm?"

Hargun
She couldnt help but laugh a bit at the Dude. This guy is some character. she thought and replied to him.

"I'm Hargun... and I know Ambrose.." she said looking over to him again. "Well its a pleasure to meet you Dude.." she said, not even bothering to ask him for his actual name.

"Oh.. this thing?" she said grabbing her sketchbook. "Now I really dont think its that important.. but you can look at it again." and lazily handed it over to the Dude.

Pyroth Ignatius
He wondered how the others had been faring, if anyone had experienced such severe side effects as he felt he had, perhaps he could get close enough to see what they were up to without being seen. Before he could change his mind, he set off at a near-jog, coming to the steps onto the beach and peering at those at the bar, keeping somewhat close to the corner in the hope that they didn't see him.

However, the first thing that caught his eye was the form of the dude, whose appearance had changed quite significantly since he last met him at the lake. Pyroth couldn't make out everything but felt a little reassured nevertheless.

It took every ounce of courage he had in his body to swallow his pride and make his way down to the bar where he sat at the very end and made a pretty decent attempt at looking as if he hadn't noticed his new appearance.

He felt a sort of manic irony in the fact that his ears, now pointed seemed to want to lie flat against his head but remained incapable of doing so. He didn't meet anyone else's gaze, simply looked very interested in the bar-top in front of him.

Greer Cassenwari
A bespecaled face poked out from behind the wall of the bar, looking around. Greer had felt guilty for leaving her friends, and had doubled back.

"Is the Doctor gone?"

Ian Campbell
Ian had made himself as 'at home' as he could in his duplex, then decided to wander off exploring at the beach. He started across the sands before he saw other people off in the distance. Not being a very social person, Ian stopped walking and watched to see what the people were doing.

The Dude XD
Glad that Hargun seemed to be getting ahold of herself and the new twist in her situation, he took the sketchbook and opened it up. There were faces of people in there, and trees, and the ocean - all lovely sketched out with a number 2 pencil. The girl had great skills, as far as Dude could tell. Not liek he knew much about art, but if he could recognise.

He chuckled at the doodle of Aubrey towards the end, with the "extra" embelishments that Hargun had added there.

"Nice, man! You can really draw! Hey, will you draw me something sometime?" - he asked cheerfully, to keep the girls spirit as high as he could.

At that moment Greer pocked her head back in and he waved her over to come sit down with them. After her, a strange creature skulked in and sat down at the very end bu itself. It took the Dude a bit of starring to realize that this was, in fact Pyroth. He had only seen him once before and it too a while to remember.

"Hi Pyroth" - he waved at the shy man.

Hargun
"Sure I guess." she said and laughed when he passed the Aubrey page. She reminded herself to draw one of Moreau later.

Hargun noticed Greer andattempted to wave over to her too. But when she noticed Pyroth coming over she turned her head a bit.

ANOTHER thats already changed? she thought and turned to the Dude. "So uhm.. how many people are here and how many have gotten.. animalish other than youm Ambrose, and this guy..Pyroth you say?" she asked and then the odd question rushed to her mind.

What am -I- going to be?

Pyroth Ignatius
Pyroth gave The Dude a nod and in a voice that was that tiny bit raspier than it used to be, he said "Hello there, Dude."

He made note of the changes already seeming to become evident in the other and felt a little more heartened that things weren't just going wrong for him. There was nothing quite like shared misery, it took the weight off your shoulders.

He was ready to perhaps say something to Greer when Hargun spoke. At least she proved to him that he wasn't simply imagining his appearance, that and she had also unwittingly informed her that Ambrose had been affected too.

"Ambrose has changed too?" he questioned no one in particular.

This was bad.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer sat down gratefully next to the Dude, smiling at everyone tiredly. This is what came of collecting butterflies. They were pretty, but always got people into trouble. If she'd just had the sense to stay in her room until all this craziness went away...

"I need a drink." She blinked. Had she ever said that before?

Ian Campbell
Ian continued to observe the group of people. They appeared to be talking. That was alright, people did talk. But what about? Ian was curious and sidled closer, the sand whispering softly under his booted feet.

Soon he was close enough to make out voices. 'I need a drink' that was a female voice. But which one of the females was it?

Ian stayed where he was, and began to listen to the conversation in earnest. It wasn't that he was intending to be rude, but there was no other way to find out about the other people he was to be training with.

The Dude XD
"Well, Hargun, I thought only me and Ambrose had changed thus far, but I guess Pyroth over there did, too. Hey Pyroth, come over here, don't be a stranger. None of us bite yet." - he grinned wide then turned to Greer

"Hey, glad to have you back! I got just the drink in mind for you. Hold on" - stepping behind the bar he went rummaging thru the cabinets and mixing something together. He didn't look professional at it AT ALL, and he almost spilled Creme de Menthe all over the counter top. But after a bit of fussing he put a mint green milky beverage in front of Greer in a martini glass.

"It's a grasshopper." - he informed her with a cheeky smile.

Then he looked behind Greer into the distance. There was a man walking on the beach towards them. And he didn't look familiar.

"Who's that?" - he asked noone in particullar, pointing at the man.

Hargun
Hargun smiled nicely to Pyroth after watching the Dude rumage about behind the bar. She took a much longer gulp of her water then wiped her mouth and looked over to where the Dude was pointing.

"That looks like Timo- no... No thats not him.. That looks like a new arrival.." she said, now a bit curious. She figured with the amount of people here the doc wouldn't need a lot more.. but they just seemed to be appearing here and there one by one..

She took another drink of her water and set the glass down, then turned to a blank page in her sketchbook and simply started doodling everyone's faces until starting to work on a crude looking Doctor Moreau.

Pyroth Ignatius
Pyroth was stunned to say the least at the lack of negative reactions in the gathered people, to be honest, he had expected bedlam to break out. But this was much better, the quiet life was the good life. He complied with The Dude's request and moved a little closer, watching with interest as he mixed up a drink for Greer.

He gave Greer a nod of greeting too before turning his attention to the man on the beach, he was unfamiliar to Pyroth, and not meaning to seem too nosey, he returned his attention to the bar, Hargun's sketchbook piquing his interest.

He had been a tattoo artist for years as a cover job and had gotten pretty good at it. He wasn't amazing at any kind of life drawing but his traditional Gi art and design work was pretty good. Maybe he would ask to have a look at her drawings later, she was very good.

"So, Dude, any idea what is causing these odd changes or if they are temporary?"

Greer Cassenwari
Greer giggled. She'd always liked grasshoppers. "Thanks!" Grabbing the glass she gulped down a third of the liquid before stopping to breathe, coughing a little and grinning a little madly. Maybe she could finally see what getting drunk was like!

Turning to look over her shoulder, she giggled a little again. "New people are just popping up all over."

Ian Campbell
Ian had been listening to the conversations wondering what those 'changes' everyone had been talking about were. Sure the guy he was able to identify as Dude had some major issues with some excess skin webbing on his arms, but that wasn't too unusual was it? Ian had seen things about babies born like that on the news. And the Pyroth guy had a bit more hair than one would normally see, but Ian had heard of those things too.

WHen he noticed that they saw him, he wandered a bit closer, unsure if they really wanted him to interrupt their conversation. "I'm Ian," he said hoping he wasn't being terribly rude.

The Dude XD
The Dude raised an eyebrow when Greer downed the half the drink, but decided not to interfere. Poor Greer. All she ever wanted to do was chase butterflies ...

Before answering Pyroth's question the Dude dug around in the fridge and fished out two bottles of some fancy labelled beer. Amen for Moreau there, the Dude really had to give him some credit. He put one of the beers in front of Pyroth, and kept the other one for this new Ian guy. Both of them woudl probably need it.

"Now, how could I break this to you not too gently, Pyroth ... NO. This ain't temporary. This is forever. In fact, it's just the beginning. And theey are caused by the injections you have been receiving." - he patted Pyroth on the shoulder then waved Ian to come sit with them all, and put the other beer bottle in front of him.

"Hi Ian. I'm the Dude. Here ... you gonna need this one." - he tried to smile thru his whiskers. Noone was starting to cry on him yet ... thank heavens. Otherwise he'd have to send in Greer as the "woman" in, and she looked liek she'd rather ignore the situation all together ... Not that he blamed her.

Hargun
"Hiya Ian." Hargun said and finished the last of her water, setting the glass over on the bar then gathering up her sketchbook. "Its been quite a day guys.. I need to go home and get to rest.. maybe eat something too. The trama here just wore me out so.." she said smiling slightly.

"Sorry to leave just when you guys got here, Pyroth and Ian. Im not offended by you guys being here.. no dont worry thats defiantely not it. Ill come back out later maybe.. I dunno." she said sighing. She really was a bit tired.. she noticed that sudden increase in drowsyness lately. She had also had urges to stay up late, just doing nothing. Often times she found herself falling to sleep at very early times in the morning.

With that she slowly walked up the beach she had been down almost every day now and probably for the rest of her life.

Pyroth Ignatius
Pyroth wasn't normally a drinker, he referred intoxicants that he knew intimately to the erratic nature of alcohol. However, the Dude's words were certainly putting him well on the way to re-considering that stance.

It was definately a good thing that he was a very composed person who maintained a "que sera sera" outlook on the world, otherwise he might just have flaked out then. Instead he let out a deep sigh, opened the bottle and took a swig, anything to dull hearing those dreaded words with such certainty.

Only the beginning? How could it get worse? He dreaded to think.

"I suspected something was up from day one but didn't really have occaision to object."

His memory of being strapped to that table at gunpoint and injected with that inky serum was still pretty fresh, as was the horrible and strange dream that had followed.

"But how could anyone expect this? Seriously, just tell me I'm not going to die and I'll try to deal with this piece by piece." he looked up and asked what he felt he had to.
"How bad will it get?"

It was like stepping into some bizarre dream, the reality of the situation still not totally sinking into his mind, he couldn't let it or he'd probably go loopy, and if he did, then those scientists, they'd have won, wouldn't they?

Greer Cassenwari
"Bye Hargun!" Greer said cheerily, enjoying the warm sensation in her belly. Alcohol felt neat. Listening to Pyroth, she nodded. "We're all gonna be animals someday, with all these injections going around. Real episode, uh epidemic, those are."

She gulped down more of her drink. She'd never had any alcohol before, and it was going right to her head. It certainly helped that her brain thought the current situation called for tipsyness, and so was using psychological effects to fill the gap until the alcohol hurried up and reacted with her biology.

"Dude, you don't think I'll be an insectivore, do you?" She frowned at her glass. "Cause I don't wanna eat bugs. They're my friends."

Ian Campbell
Ian grabbed the drink from the one called Dude and pondered it carefully. Legally in teh U.S he wasn't allowed to drink, but was he in the U.S. anymore, he didn't know. Of couse in the 11th century younger people could drink, and this may have something to make the training camp more authentic. Opening the bottle he took an experimental swallow. It wasn't horrible, but he would have to acquire a taste for it. One of the girls - Hargun she had been called - ran off to go to her duplex and Ian felt relieved, one of two girls were gone, and he had made sure to be as far as he could without being rude from the other. He took another mouthful and heard the remaining female speak 'We're all gonna be animals someday...'

Ian choked on his drink. What! he thought. have I landed on an island full of psychos?
"Could you repeat that?" he asked slowly when he had finished coughing. "The part about animals?"

The Dude XD
"Nah, baby, I don't think that. Aubrey wouldn't do something so vial to you. Besides, even if the critter you become like bugs - you don't have to eat them, right? I mean, it's like in "Madagascar" with the lion. If your friends are your food, then you switch to sushi. Or ... ya know ... whatever you feel like eating instead." - he patted her on the head with his extra large hands then put a glass of water in front of her, for just in case.

Turning to Ian the Dude waved his flippered hand around and then pointed to his whiskers: "See these? I am not sure what the staff int he labs told you, but if you got to this island and received an injection - you are going to trun into an animal of some sort. Or kind of a mix between an animal and a human. They promised us we will still be able to speak, but I am not sure how they would know that. Anyway. Here - feel - this is real allright. By the by, I was not born chocolate brown, I'm Irish. I started looking Polynesian only a few days ago, becasue I am turnign into a sea lion. And I suppoe they have dark skin ..."

Pyroth Ignatius
Pyroth listened with a distinct form of horror as The Dud described what had occured in his transformation so far, a sea lion? He had an idea what he was turning into? Pyroth could only hope to know. Whatever it was seemed canine. He decided to pipe in his own comment to Ian too.

"The man isn't lying, I'll tell you that much. I have never been this hairy." he shivered in revulsion at the unfamiliar thought of fur all across his body, like some kind of animal, something from the horror stories you used to hear round the campfire told to scare little children. "Nor did I have the..beginnings of a tail, which luckily you can't see. If you got the injection, I'd say frankly, you are as screwed as we are."

Without warning he stood up from the bar and picked up his bottle of beer which, being as unfamiliar to his system as it had been to greer, was beginning to set in, his thin build hadn't helped much either. "Sorry you guys, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to head back to my Duplex too, need to think this over, try and fit it all into perspective. Thanks for filling me in on the situation Dude, the news might not have been pleasant but ignorance is worse."

He let out a sigh "Keep me posted if anyone else shows signs of change, could you? Good luck Ian, sorry I didn't get a chance to talk much, but you will probably see more of me in future. Later."

And with that he made a somewhat zigzag path back up the beach, the alcohol creating a slightly fuzzy sheild against the horrors of his situation. As he went a thought struck him, what was Ambrose changing into if the Dude was becoming a sea lion? More to the point, what was he becoming? A dog? Or maybe just for irony he was becoming one the scavengers he chased off so often back home..a coyote.

The absurdity of it all made him grin like a madman and as he turned the bend he burst into somewhat manic laughter, what else could you do but laugh when your world became as surreal as this?

Well you could always get something else to eat.

He made a beeline for the cafeteria and then for his duplex.

Greer Cassenwari
"Hee, hee, 'baby'." Greer chuckled, downing the last of her grasshopper and moving on to the water. Guh, that stuff didn't taste alcoholic! Oh well.

Waving to the departing Pyroth, she crossed her arms on the bar top and rested her head on them. Sighing, she looked morosly from Dude to the new guy, Ian, and back again. "D'you think I can still be an entomologist when I'm part animal, or will the fur and/or feathers get in the way?"

Ian Campbell
Ian leaned back and downed ther rest of his beer. "Tail..." he muttered. He thought about his home, his dreams, and the one person that suppoted those dreams. "James." his mind was in turmoil. He was going to turn into an animal, he would never see James, or another Ren Faire again. "No training camp...." Ian knew he wasn't making sense, but with that sudden news and the effect of the alcohal, nothing made sense anymore.
He looked at the round lump on his arm, where he had been given a vaccination for diseases. "The diseases...there are none?" Ian asked no one in particular. When Pyroth got up and left, Ian was startled from his stupor. Barons of old faced perils worse than this. Their brothers and family were killed everyday, or they were killed. That was the risks of living back then. Ian could handle that. This was just like 11th century Europe.

"The barons shall live to rule again," he whispered before grinning.

The Dude XD
"Nope, no deadly rare diseases here thus far."

The new guys was quite obviously stunned by the news. After patting him on the shoulder, the Dude left Ian to mull over the information and instead turned over to Greer, who was getting quite trashed. Did he really make that strong of a grashopper? Maybe she just had no tolerance, the Dude decided. Heh, tha'ts funny. A drunk entomologist XD

"Hmmm ... that's a good question. Maybe you gonna get even better at catching bugs, ey? Maybe you'll get, like, mad monkey powers to climb any tree. Or ... or a sticky tongue, like a chameleon? That'd be handy, if one got over the gross factor" - he grinned wide.

"Cheer up, you haven't gotten anything growing from you yet. Got still plenty of tiems to chase butterflies. Are the butterflies on this isalnd any good, anyway?"

Greer Cassenwari
"Ooo, reflexes. Reflexes would be neat." She finished her water, blowing a stray hair out of her eyes. "I've never had those. I'm clumsy."

Greer smiled at the Dude, muzzily appreciating his attempts to make her feel better. Friends really were nice to have. She wished someone had told her that a long time ago, not that she would have listened.

"B'tterflies is- are, okay. Never been a pretty bug kind of girl though. Was collecting them to avoid talking to Aubrey like Ambrose asked me to, cause I'm bad with the talking and the people. I like phasmids, mostly."

Ian Campbell
Ian sat thinking and his grin faded. This was like the 11th century, but how often did barons turn into animals? But they did face worse, and turning into an animal is childs play compared to a war. He imagined himself as a baron returning home after a war, his non-existant family running to greet him.

But this was different, here he would have no one to wait for him. No one to give him favors when he rode off to joust. Mayhaps this was more like the pagans being hunted by the Christians. He could be a druid, chosen by the elders to represent the Horned One on Beltain. Yes, he was going to be the Horned One.

"With horns like that of the great stag and a wiseness that knows no bounds." Ian looked towards Dude and the female, wondering how long it would be before he became hairy, or reptillian or anything like that. He sighed, and spoke. "Dude, how many people are here?" How many people are becoming like the ancient gods, he though to himself, unable to properly put that in the question.

The Dude XD
Yey, he scored a smile from a pretty girl! Greer was really cute when she was drunk, the Dude decided. In a clutzy geek kinda way. Happy to not have to talk about grave realities for a bit, he chatted away:

"Oh no, don't worry, I totally get the avoiding real world bit. I dive for fish instead of hunt for insects though. If there were any neat bugs down there, i'd bring you some. I'm not sure how they'd look there, though. Are shrimp insects? I can bring you some mantis shrimp if I catch one. Oh - and what are phasmids? Like - roaches or something?" - the name "phasmid" sounded to the Dude like something out of a SciFi movie. He imagined a pissed off roach with laser guns and grinned wide. Sounded like "Starship Troopers".

When Ian piped up from his sullen state the Dude answered: "I dunno. Let me count. In terms of girls we have Greer here, Hargun who left when you walked in, then Emelyn, Cassidy, Karma, Julianne, Thorn and Madison. In terms of guys we have Pyroth who just left, me, Ambrose, Matthew, Timothy and I think that's it? So, what, thirteen people? Fourteen with you."

Greer Cassenwari
"Crustaceans are underwater bugs, you know. Arthropods. And crabs are yummy." She closed her eyes, trying to remember something that might fit into this discussion. "In a really deep part of the oceans, I think they found a giant underwater pill bug. Y'know the tiny armored thingers that live in wood and roll up into balls when all scared? Them, but all huge and aqua-like."

Hearing Ian's horn comment, she turned to peer at him curiosly. Was he drunk too? He was talking funny. The Dude wasn't drunk, but he was being nice as usual so that was okay. Why had she never done this drinking thing?

"A phasmid is a stick insect. There are lots of kinds. Lots and lots. All really fun looking. Lacewings are the prettiest. Flying sticks!" She pulled off her jacket and tied it around her waist. Too hot!

Ian Campbell
Ian grimaced, were there really that many girls here? Hopefully he wouldn't have to interact with them much. What the Dude and Greer were talking about was pretty much going over Ian's head. European history he was good at, insects, he was not.

"How many..." Ian swallowed hard "how many other people besides you and Pyroth have begun to change?" He was curious, wondering how fast the changes occured, and how long it would be before he changed. Deep down, underneath his terror at becoming an animal was a wild exitement, an exitement akin to that of the Chosen on the eve of Beltain. Smothering that feeling underneath his common sense, Ian smiled grimly. "I don't suppose that this is actually a training camp is it?"

The Dude XD
The Dude had no clue what a stick insect was, so he listened to Greer's description and nodded: "Ah ... okey. COOL. How do you catch one? Like - do they fly around 'n stuff?"

I mean she did say something about "lacewings". Must be abel to fly if it has wings ...

M'okey ... now Greer was "stripping". The Dude has seen this behaviour before. First the jacket comes off, then thye move onto t-shirts. Time to run damage control. The Dude turned around and filled another glass with water, then rummaged to see whether Moreau had supplied some beer nuts or something, but found only lime wedges. He put the glass of water in front to Greer and a quarter of lime in front of her.

"Here you go." - he grinned, hoping that this would be good enough to sober her up a little.

Turning back to Ian, the Dude said: "As far as I know just me and Ambrose, and, well, Pyroth. And no, this is not a training camp. WHy are you so antisocial, anyway? Come closer, neither me nor Greer bite. Want a drink other then beer?"

Greer Cassenwari
Greer grabbed the proffered glass and drained it, nodding. "The lacewing kind fly, yup, but not to well. Short bursts, mainly gliding. You just wait till they're down low enough and then grab 'em. They don't bite."

She blinked, feeling a little less fuzzy headed. Her mouth tasted funny. Huh.

She waved to Ian. "Come be social! If I can do it, anyone can."

Ian Campbell
It figured. While he was turning into an animal there was no training camp. But at least he might be able to have some fun. At the Dude's suggestion, Ian moved closer, still trying to keep a polite distance away from Greer. "Does anyone here spar?" he asked. "Real swords. Or perhaps quarterstaff. Some of the trees in that forest have good wood to make a quarterstaff with." for the first time, Ian had spoken to Greer as well as Dude. "Antisocial..I guess. People and I just never got along. According to James, I dream too much and people can't relate to that." Ian did not realize that the Dude and Greer had no clue who James was, and thus did not clarify when he said that.

Only three people had changed so far. Of 14 the Dude said were on the island. Ian frowned at this but refrained from making a comment on it. "I'll pass on the drink. Perhaps later."

The Dude XD
"Go girl!" - the Dude grinned and climbed over the bar to sit down next to Greer. It was nice to see her out of her shell and having fun. Go Greer indeed! If Ambrose was all in pieces about the change, then Greer must be, too. But she hasn't complained or cried and when the Dude dragged her into Ambrose's room that first night, she was a real champ. The Dude decided to tell that to Greer.

"Hey, thank you for helping out with Ambrose that one time, Greer. I didn't know what to do there. I really didn't I just kinda wanted to run off and let somebody else handle this. So thanks, man. Errr .. I mean woman." - he scratched his head and grinned apologetically at the slip up.

His stomach made a loud growling sound and the Dude grinned even wider, then patted it: "Hey, I am not sure about you guys, but I am starving. So I think I'm gonna go back to the village and grab a bite to eat."

On his way out, he patted Ian on the shoulder: "You be nice to the lady, new guy. Or we beat you up!"

With that he was out the door.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer smiled back at the Dude, embarrased by the praise. "That's what friends are for, I'm told."

Waving as he retreated, cocked her head at Ian. "So what do you do?"

Ian Campbell
As the Dude left Ian suddenly felt very uncomfortable. He was stuck, alone with a woman, and there was no polite way to get out of this one. Shifting uneasily, he responded to her question, thinking his answer over carefully. He didn't want to sound like a moron.

"Before coming here, I worked as a clerk at a grocery store. Before that....I dropped out of high school - I wasn't stupid!" he added quickly "I was just always dreaming. I couldn't pay attention in class so I always failed. In the end I dropped out and got a job there. Then there was this add in the newspaper, about a training camp for medieval style fighting used at ren faires. I figured working as a knight at a ren faire was the closest thing to me dream so I quit my job and came here. Why are you here?" That was the most Ian had ever spoken to a female in his entire life. Was something wrong with him, or was he just craving the social acceptance he had never gotten before?

Greer Cassenwari
"I'm an entomologist. I study insects." She kicked her feet happily. She was talking to someone she didn't know! As much as she wanted to stay human, island life was really good for her social skills, in that she was actually developing some.

"Ren fair? I think I went to one of those once! With my dad." Her face fell for a moment at the mention of her father, but she quickly perked up again. "It was a lot of fun. I'm a fencer! A saberist. You do medieval sword fighting? Neat!"

Ian Campbell
"Study insects huh? Insects are okay, not want I'd want to study for the rest of my life." Ian perked up at her mention of the ren faire. That was something he could relate to, but was it worth talking to a female about? Yes, he decided. If it was a female he could talk to and not make a fool of himself, then he would.

"I went to one with my dad and older brother. A long time ago, before Marcus died - Marcus is my older brother." Unbidden his eyes watered a little bit not knowing how Marcus had been spying on him before his death. "This watch I wear, it was Marcus' It was the only part of his body untorn by the claws of the wild dogs. I was the only one who wanted it after that. I have worn it ever since - 10 years now." Ian also thought about her fencing comment. "I tried fencing once. It's a lot different from fighting with broadswords. A lot more quick, and smoother. I tried archery one too, but that didn't go too well." Ian grimaced in memory. "James says it was because I dreamed too much."

As Ian thought of James, a question arose in his mind. "Can we send letters from her. I want to send a letter to James. He wanted me to write if I arrived safely - I have a fear of flying so he thought to encourage me."

Greer Cassenwari
"You lost your brother? I'm sorry!" She frowned sympathetically. "I never had any siblings. Only child, me. Archery! Archery is great. I do that too. Lots of fun. Always wanted to try a crossbow, but Mum wouldn't let me. She thought I'd hurt something on the recoil, which knowing me I would. Skilled at getting hurt, me."

She brushed her hair back nervously, realizing she'd been babbling. That probably meant the alcohol was leaving her system. Damn. That meant she'd be getting embarrassed and bad with people soon. "Letters? Nope. We're completely cut off from the outside world." She blinked at him. "Who's James?"

Ian Campbell
"Marcus was a good kid. I was 10 when he died, he was 12. He had a great sense of humor, but like Mom, he disapproved of my constant dreaming." He smiled at Greer mentioning she was an only child. "You were spoiled as an only child weren't you? Marcus was spoiled being the eldest, but I had stuff pretty alright. I was never good at archery, I could hit anything besides what I was aiming at. I got kicked out of the club right away." Ian paused, not sure what he should say about her thinking she was skilled at getting hurt.

"Completely cut of...What about the helicopter? Surely that could deliver a letter. Just to let james know I'm safe. He doesn't need to know details." There was a desperation in Ian's voice, and in his next sentence it became clear as to why. "James is my younger brother. The only family that will talk to a failure like me."

Greer Cassenwari
"Spoiled? Dunno. Maybe. My dad and I were really close. Did everything together. He died when I was fifteen. Cancer." Why was she telling a practical stranger this? Goodness knew.

At Ian's panic she only shook her head. "James is loyal to Doctor Moreau, and the good Doctor says no outside communiques. He won't deliver any letter unless the Doctor says he should, which he won't." Realizing how callous she sounded, she put a comforting hand on his shoulder. "I'm sorry."

Ian Campbell
Ian looked like he was going to cry, and he was. He wanted to send his brother a letter, but evidently all he had now was the people on this island. "How come the doctor doesn't allow letters? He seemed pretty nice when he gave me the injection - though he did lie to me about that, and the reason I was here. He still seemed nice enough." Ian bowed his head. "I never spoke to the pilot - his name is James too? People with that name can't be too bad of a person." Ian was rambling some more and also displaying a lack of common sense by trustin almost everyone even if they lied to him.

Ian felt Greer's hand on his shoulder and flinched before just accepting that she was trying to give him comfort. "Don't be sorrry, none of this is your fault."

Greer Cassenwari
Noting the flinch, she withdrew her hand. Oops. "The Doctor is doing some very illegal experiments on all of us here - I know if I was in his shoes I wouldn't want news of it getting out to the rest of the world. The greatest armies of the world would come to shut him down. Probably kill or lock us up to be tested somewhere, too..."

Yeah, that was comforting. There, she was back to her own self, socially inept and crap with people. Wasn't that nice?

Ian Campbell
Ian felt Greer remove her hand and nodded. "I suppose so, but which country is this island a part of? This sort of experimentation might be legal in some places." Ian couldn't believe what he was saying. It sounded as if he was supporting the turning of people into animals. That inner part of himself he had been trying to suppress was becoming happier, and managing to seep past his barriers into his head. "Augh!" Ian groaned grabbing at his head tugging at some of his hair. He wasn't supposed to be happy about turning into an animal.

Remember the Horned One The little part of himself said. You want to be the Horned One.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer leaned back, worried by someone who assaulted himself. "Um, I dunno which country we're part of. You'd have to ask the Doctor, although we could be privately owned..."

He was odd, and she was back to her usual skittish self. Time to go. "Sorry Ian, but I should be going. I have a lot of cataloging to do, not to mention animalistic friends to check on. I'll... I'll see you later, okay?"

Smiling, she beat a retreat back home to her duplex. He seemed nice enough, but next time she spent time with Ian she planned to have either the Dude or Ambrose along. Fencing wasn't very useful for self defense.

Ian Campbell
"Farewell," he said mournfully. What was he supposed to be doing now. Sighing, he went and grabbed another beer. Opening it he headed out along the beach back in the general direction of the village, taking his time to ponder his new home.

Oog. Headache. It wasn't the worst whe'd ever had, so she couldn't have gotten that drunk - probably just tipsy - but still. She needed to not do the drinking thing anymore. Sure, the grasshopper tasted good, and she'd certainly enjoyed spending time with her friends while tipsy, but this headache was going to make it hard for her to concentrate on work.

Greer stood carefully, having napped once returning home from the bar. Shower. Shower would be good. And tea. She'd have to go to the cafeteria for that, but she didn't feel like leaving her room just yet. Too many people out there. Too much socializing. She wanted to feel more like herself before there was any chance of bumping into others.

Navigating her way out of her clothes and into the shower took longer than usual, since Greer was moving slowly in hopes of avoiding anymore adverse side effects to the past alcohol consumption. Once under the water and going through the practiced motions of cleaning herself, the fog clouding her mind cleared somewhat, and she began to go over her memory of her time at the bar. Beach, butterflies, Ambrose... Thorn, the Dude, the Doctor... shying away from her recollection of the fight, she tried to determine how much of a fool she'd made of herself when drinking. Although mortified on principal that she'd lost control in front of anyone, it seemed to have gone pretty well. She hadn't gotten that drunk, thanks greatly to the Dude, and so hadn't made a mess of things. And the there was that Ian fellow...

She shivered, turning off the water and stepping out of the shower to wrap herself in a large, fluffy towel. Ian had been akward but nice, as she generally tried to be. Still, there had been a moment or two where his actions had worried her to the point of fright, and so she'd fled the moment she'd found an excuse. Did she scare people like that? The only one she remembered fleeing had been Cassidy, and she's gone because of her fear of insects. Surely Greer herself didn't effect people like that?

Shrugging, she dressed and sat down at her desk, deciding to get an hour or two of work done before she braved the light of day. Making a mental note to ask the Dude or Ambrose about her relative weirdness, she began filling her field notebook with butterfly data.

Injection #2 - the change begins

Greer Cassenwari
Greer had gone to bed early, her head still pained from the grasshopper she'd drank earlier that day. She was the biological definition of a lightweight, after all. She fell soundly asleep and stayed that way, grateful for the rest. There were too many strange and frightening things to contemplate these days, and chasing butterflies only filled up so many waking hours. Unconciousness was an absolute gift most nights. Tonight, however, brought nothing but terror.

She dreamed of the night her father died. He'd been in the hospital for months, the doctors always looking gray and sad when she came to visit and refusing to tell her anything. He had cancer, she knew, and it was eating away at his heart. Such a medical cliche. She would have laughed at the B movie quality of it all, if it hadn't been real. She'd spent entire weeks at the hospital by his side, leaving only when the nurses chased her out or her mother tried to make her go to school. In the end though, both factions had given up trying to separate them, and Greer had lived for two weeks watching her father slowly die. He hadn't wanted her to, but she would leave when he told her to. It was the only time she'd ever disobeyed him, and to this day she wasn't sure if she regretted it or not. It had been horrible to watch as the life leeched out of him, but she'd been there to the very end, the epitome of faithful. Not even her mother could boast that. Only Greer had seen him die.

Michael Cassenwari had been a big man before the cancer had eaten him from the inside, and this largeness had always made his only child feel safe in his presence. When she came to sit by his bed side on that final day, she'd nearly apologized for coming into the wrong room before he called her name. He was a shrunken wraith beneath the heavy hospital blankets, making her seem sturdy and muscle bound in comparison. Somehow his voice never changed, and she winced when he spoke as it seemed dangerously loud for his body to try and produce. Sitting in the chair that had become hers long ago, she'd smiled at the still-breathing mummifed remains of the man who'd been her father.

"How are you feeling Papa?"

"Oh, I can't complain."

He'd always said that, always strong even though he was the one dying and in pain. The tears had welled up of their own accord, and he had tried to lift a hand to wipe them off her cheeks but didn't have the strength. Nuzzling his hand, she'd laid her head on the bed, tired and empty. Her father had made soothing noises, and she'd slept for hours.

Greer awoke from a dreamless sleep, frightened and alert. Her father's eyes were closed and his breathing was shallow - he was asleep and for once seemed not to be in pain. She wanted to be calm and happy, but something had woken her. Placing a gentle kiss on her father's cheek, she spoke softly. "Papa?"

"I love you, little bird."

The words were soft, said in a whispered voice her father had never had. Alarmed, she grasped his hand. "Papa?"

"Take care of Candace."

Her cheeks were wet and it was hard to see. "Papa!"

He smiled then, eyes still closed. The heart moniter skipped a beep, switching over to the dead whine. "Papa! Papa, no! Papa!"

Greer sobbed, shaking her father's hand, willing him back to life. Just one more moment, one more word! Please, please, Papa, don't leave me! I'm scared, I'm frightened, and I can't face the world alone-

A nurse came in, grabbed her arm, and jabbed a giant needle into it. Greer screamed.

Sitting bolt upright in bed, she gasped for air and scrabbled at her arm, looking for the injection point. There. Right were the dream nurse had stabbed her. But she'd never been injected in that dream before- no, no! Scrambling out of bed, her legs got tangled in the blankets and she fell, kicking and whimpering until she
was free. Standing, Greer ran to the bathroom and stared in the mirror. What next?

The Change
You feel a tingling shoot across your body as you stare at the mirror. Your skin begins to itch as well as your head. it feels like sections of your skin are on fire. You feel like something is pushing out of your skin. You realize something is happening with your eyes, things look funny and your head starts to hurt. Your lips begin to feel dry as well.

As you watch, feathers begin to push out of your skin, long thin strands that seem to expand on contact with air. They grow from below your hair all the way down your back. You feel them push out from your elbows and your hands. But most of all they seem to cover yoru entire back down to where your a** seems to have sprouted some particurally prominant ones. Even as your watching all this your vision behind your glasses gets odd as your eyes repair themselves and get sharper than they were before. Even sharper than most humans. Your legs itch as you feel the skin dry and harden turning yellow around the backsides, not covering the entire thing.

Another thing you notice, your hungry, and your craving... meat. More than you ever have before as your tastes turn almost completely carnivorious. You notice whoever was here seems to have left, near your door a pair of glasses made from just glass that look like your old ones.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer tore off her glasses instinctively, desperately needing to see what was happening to her. Her skin was on fire, sprouting feathers and hardening wherever it cared to. She ran a frightened hand through her hair, squeaking in alarm when she felt feathers underneath her locks. She was turning into a bird? Who turned into a bird?

Her worries about becoming an insectivore were but to rest as her stomach cried out for meat, the very thought of eating such a meal making her ill. She needed food, more than she ever had before, but didn't for the life of her know how she was going to manage to choke down any. Bird of prey then. Why not a wren? A bluejay? She ate seeds all the time-

The hunger pains doubled her over, and she forced herself out of the bathroom and to the front door. There she found a package, which she tore open to reveal a pair of glasses identical to her own. Frowning, she jammed them on, suprised to find they didn't interfere with her vision. Good. Fine. Nice illusion. Her skin pulled and ached, but she needed food. Wobbly and stiff, Greer got herself out of her duplex and somehow down to the cafeteria without falling. There she grabbed the first meat she saw, grateful to the cook that it was welldone and not bloody at all. Meat was bad enough, but bleeding meat? She shuddered, eyeing her meal. She appreciated the clarity of vision, but not at that moment...

Closing her eyes, she picked up the meat with stiff hands and tore into it, gulping it down too fast to taste. When belly was finally full she staggered back to her duplex, inordinately glad no one had been there to see her. This was not one of her better days. Kicking off her shoes, Greer pulled the blankets over her head and wished for a dreamless sleep. This time, she got it.

Greer had been frowning at her reflection in her bathroom mirror for a good ten minutes now, and wasn't any closer to figuring out what sort of bird she was turning into. A brownish bird, yes, and certainly a carnivorous one, but that wasn't enough information to go off of when you knew as little about ornithology as she did. If she'd been turning into an insect, she would have had the phylum in a minute flat. Birds just weren't her area of expertise.

She wanted a bird book. If Greer didn't know something, she researched it, but without internet or library access she was stuck. Damn it, she wanted to puzzle out what species she was turning into, but after the scene at the bar didn't think talking to either the Doctor or Aubrey was an option. A shred of memory tickled at the back of her mind - what had the Dude said about cameras... a ha!

Pulling her clothes back on quickly, she ran into the main room and scrabble at her messy desk for a blank piece of paper and a pen. Writing something big and dark on the paper, she scouted around for a place to put it. It was a pity she didn't know the exact locations of the cameras: she'd just have to guess at where to put the sign.

Choosing the bed for it's flatness, central location, and size, she plopped down the note and headed to the cafeteria, hungry as usual.

The Sign
To whom it may concern,

I would truly appreciate access to a book on birds of prey, in hopes I may come to understand what I am becoming. Thank you.

Greer Cassenwari
It was official: Greer was never chasing another butterfly as long as she lived. The blasted things could move, which was due more to a good breeze than anything else, but still! She'd tried to stay close to the village as usual, but today a particularly beautiful Blue Morpho had caught her eye and she followed it into the depths of the jungle. Upon losing the butterfly, she got turned around, and quickly got lost herself. Twenty minutes of wandering had led her to the top of the cliffs, where she had promptly sat down to pout at circumstances somewhat beyond her control. How was she going to get home?

Timothy Matthews
Timothy sat near the cliff edge on a rock, singing a song that he'd been working on. He'd sang it before and now he was just trying to refine it. Maybe he could perform it for the islanders. He hoped that it didn't sound too weird, he was self concience about his work.

"Longing for something I'll never have...
...dreaming of things, that cannot be.

I wake up and stare in the mirror...
...and I imagine him standing beside me.

Lost in a jungle...
...of uncertainty.

Lost in a land...
...of insecurities.

Can't have the one thing...
...I want more than all others.

I'm lost...
...with no one to show me the way...."

So he'd sang this a lot, sue him. Out here, away from the world, he felt so at peace, despite everything he'd learned and found out. Timothy wasn't as unhappy as he'd thought he'd be though. Since he met Vasile he'd been in a better, not worse mood. Despite the fact that Vasile didn't return his affections.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer sighed, listening to the sounds of nature as she tried to puzzle a way out of this mess. Ah, the wind, the birds, the singing- wait, the singing?! Hurrah, a person! Standing quickly, she turned and headed towards the melodious voice.

"Hello? Is someone there?"

Timothy Matthews
Timothy heard a voice, and immedietly quit singing and playing. He found it ironic that someone would be out here when he was. A little annoyed but mostly suprised he yelled back.

"Yes, this way, by the cliffs" Timothy yelled back to call this person closer to him. Whoever they might be.

Greer Cassenwari
Walking slowly and carefully so she didn't hurt herself, it took Greer a moment to locate his position. Crashing out of the under growth, she smiled at the new fellow and waved a hello with her net.

"Hi, I'm Greer! Are you new to the island?"

Timothy Matthews
Timothy nodded as he looked Greer over. He was a bit weirded out by her appearance. She had... feathers on her body. He'd met the Dude and Ambrose but that didn't make it not weird every time. What was he gonna end up as he wondered.

"Yeah... ummm... got here two weeks ago or no. Was here to study music, atleast that's what I was told."

Timothy looked at Greer's only slightly odd appearance again.

"How long have you been here?" How long did he have till he knew he wondered.

Greer Cassenwari
She frowned, thinking. "A month, I think. I haven't really been keeping track of the days."

Smiling, she pointed to a patch of ground next to him. "Mind if I join you?"

Timothy Matthews
"Ahhh... no no problem. I was just out here singing." Timothy rubbed his neck "You probably heard."

Timothy was always akward around women, but atleast she seemed nice. She was going to be a bird too, which was kind of neat.

"What about you, what brings you all the way out here?" he smiled at Greer.

Greer Cassenwari
Plopping down next to him, she laid her net across her lap. "I'm an entomologist, and was out chasing this really beautiful example of Morpho menalaus, and got really, really lost. On the plus side, you sing well and the cliffs are pretty."

Frowning, she cocked her head, "It's been all of two minutes and I can't remember your name. What was it again?"

He wasn't commenting on her feathers. What a nice boy!

Timothy Matthews
Huh, so she studied bugs, well that was pretty neat. She'd been chasing a butterfly too. You know... that gave him an idea.

"I'm Timothy..." he smiled a bit. "You really liked my singing? I play too of course."
Timothy pointed at the guitar resting against the tree.

"I could, try and play something." he picked up the guitar, "you said your name was Greer right?"

Greer Cassenwari
She nodded. "I'd love to hear more!"

Timothy Matthews
Timothy grinned and sat his guitar on his lap... he tuned it a bit then started playing.

"Fields of green...
...mixed with color.

She runs there...
...among the flowers and the colors.

Chasing butterflies...
...she's been chasing butterflies.

Sparklings of color...
...like flowers on the wind.

You can chase...
...but do you really want to catch them?

Chasing butterflies...
...she's been chasing butterflies."

Greer Cassenwari
Greer laughed into her hands, grinning at him. "Ah, sneaky! That was great."

A part of herself stood back and watched her interact with Timothy, wondering when she learned to relax and talk so well.

Timothy Matthews
"Well, that's all I've got so far," Timothy winked. "But if I ever finish it I'll be sure to make sure that it's known it's a tribute to you."

"It's nice out here, despite everything... I think." Timothy just couldn't be as upset as he'd like to be.

Greer Cassenwari
"Aw, thank you! I've always wanted a tribute, and this is much better than the whole Greecian slave thing."

Ah, there was that Greer socializing we all know and love! Damn it.

Timothy Matthews
Timothy paused for a moment. But then found more than much else his curiousity had the best of him.

"Greecian slave thing? What do you mean?" he said.

"I'm curious."

Greer Cassenwari
"Oh, uh, well, the term tribute originates from the ancient Greek city-states, where if one city was defeated in battle by another, they would have to pay a yearly tribute in money or slaves to the winner if they didn't want to be obliterated."

Greer smiled sheepishly, blushing a little. "Sorry, I'm a bit of a nerd."

Timothy Matthews
"No no, that's really cool. I like stuff like that. I was a bit of nerd too, well maybe just a dork. Atleast till high school." Timothy grinned.

"May sound a little weird," Timothy shrugged. "But maybe your like, your parent's tribute to the world. Unless you know why they named you that."

"I do think it's a neat name though."

Greer Cassenwari
Greer blinked, horribly confused. "Wait- what?"

Timothy Matthews
Oh my ******** god... I am such an idiot. This is why I don't do well around women.

"I mean... I thought you meant Greer... I think we got on different subjects. Of course I should have caught that." Timothy stammered.

He was on the verge of hitting himself if there wasn't someone else present. "Yeah, well, I feel dumb now."

Greer Cassenwari
Greer smiled apologetically. "That's okay! I can guarantee you I have said more socially akward things about a million times."

Timothy Matthews
"Yeah, I have a tendancy to put my foot where my food should go too." Timothy grinned then he wiped the sweat off his brow.

"Is it... really hot out here." he was looking rather sick and sweating like a pig. He looked like he was about to pass out.

Timothy's whole body had started trembling, he had no idea exactly what was going on.

Greer Cassenwari
She frowned, concerned at how ill her companion suddenly looked. "Tim? What's wrong?"

Timothy Matthews
White streaks started appearing in Timothy's hair. Starting at the tips the hair seemed to be going grey then white in a matter of seconds. Timothy did not look comfortable as his body temperature seemed to have risen significently and he was now leaned against the tree practically spasming.

Greer Cassenwari
Rushing to his side in alarm, Greer checked his temperature and tried to keep him still.

"Tim! Timothy! Can you hear me?"

Her mind raced, trying to remember her CPR training in vain. What was happening to him?

Timothy Matthews
Timothy groaned a bit and begin to scratch at his chest as it was itching badly, despite the hot uncomfortable sensation. As before both his and greer's eyes white fur began to sprout from it in a patch.

What was happening to him? Timothy wondered, what was he changing into?

Greer Cassenwari
It finally struck her that he was changing - like she had a few nights ago when she'd sprouted feathers. Speaking softly, she tried to calm him so he could ride it out.

"Don't worry Tim, it's just the change, like the one I went though when I grew my feathers. I made it through and you will too."

Timothy Matthews
Timothy felt hair grow from the backs of his hands and up his arms. He felt the same itchiness on his feet. He reached his hand back to grasp his back as his fingers trailed down to the area above his a**, and he felt something growing. He pulled his pants down a bit as the tail was growing, along with fluffy white and black fur.

The fur that had sprouted on Timothy was all very... fluffy. As his face grew small, almost unnoticable whiskers and his ears begin to round and lengthen.

Timothy was left... very fluffy, as internally something was changing as well, he was already growing musk glands.

Finally, it was all over. "What happened... what am I?" he said gasping for area

Greer Cassenwari
Pulling her water bottle from her 'utility belt,' Greer unscrewed the cap and gave it to him to drink. "I think you went through your first change - did you get a shot from the Doctor recently?"

Timothy Matthews
"Not that... I know of. I'm not sure..." Timothy looked at his hands and his chest. He couldn't get a good look at the small fluffy tail like thing. Black and white, black and white, oh no.

"Am I what I think I am?" Timothy looked embarrased and worried.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer cocked her head, looking at him critically. "If you're thinking of a skunk, then I'd say yes."

Timothy Matthews
"What the..." Timothy felt tears welling up. "Whoever heard of a musician skunk?"

He kept fighting them back, he'd never really had a problem with crying but for some reason, since she'd been through the same kind of thing he didn't want to. He felt like it was only a matter of time though.

"What am I going to do, drive people away with the smell?" Timothy was suddenly reminded of every bad PePe LePew cartoon he'd ever seen.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer smiled at him, pulling him into a hug. "Surely not! You were raised better than that. Don't worry, it'll all be okay. If I can make it as an entomological hawk, you'll be fine."

Timothy Matthews
Timothy wipped none existant tears. "Thanks Greer, well I think I'm gonna head back now... if that's okay with you."

"Lot to take in... now that I'm the amazing skunk boy..." Timothy sighed, Greer defintly was showing strength through all of this. He wondered how she had dealt with her own changes.

Greer Cassenwari
"Okay... quick question though: how do I get do I get down to the beach from here?" Poor thing! She completely understood wanting to be alone.

Timothy Matthews
"Follow me back to the village, I'll show you." Timothy lead the way with the little skunk tail bud following behind him the whole way.

He'd lead Greer to the beach, then get some much needed alone time.

Greer Cassenwari
"Thank you so much!" Unimagainably grateful to be headed back towards civilization, Greer trotted obediently behind him the whole way.

THE LADY HAWK STRIKES AGAIN!

The Dude
The Dude was sitting on the beach, next to the water. In his mouth, a lit cigarette was smoldering. Well, at least one would assume it was a cigarette. A certain sweet smell was hanging in the air.

He was busy constructing something. Something that looked suspiciously like a sand castle. Slowly the Dude was picking up the wet sand with his flippers hand and letting it drip on top of the castle. He must have been at it for a while, because the construction was quite expansive and elaborate, despite a certain non-Euclidian geometry about it.

Greer
Greer trudged out of the jungle, physically tired and emotionally drained. Why did all the emotinal stuff happen in front of her? She wasn't the one to handle it properly!

Catching sight of the Dude, she walked over and plopped gratefully down on the sand next to him. "Hello! What are you building?"

The Dude
The Dude looked up at Greer and smiled widely for no particular reason, the joint still in his mouth: ""Heloooooo!" Then he looked back at the castle and pondered that question: "Babylon" - was the answer. Yeah, he was a bit high out of his mind, but it's been a while he'd done that. Heh ... what'd Greer want? Feathers looked funny. He started giggling.

Greer
Greer frowned, wondering why her friend was acting so oddly. Whatever was that smell? "Dude! Are you smoking marajuana?" She sounded positively scandalized.

The Dude
The Dude took the joint out of his mouth and looked at it then looked back up at Greer and stretched out his hand: "Yeah! Want some?" - he grinned wide.

Greer
"No! Of course not!" Greer stopped herself, taking a breath to calm down. She really didn't have anything against drugs and such, but having never had the occassion to encounter them had a very teetotaler's view of them.

"I'm sorry, no, no thank you."

The Dude
"Oh." - he looked again at the joint, then carefully put it out in the sand and put it behind his ear. Then, as he was sitting, he suddenly fell back onto the sand, and folded his flipper under his head, starring at the sky. The castle, left unattended, was licked away by the gentle waves of the lagoon.

"Wassup Greer?" - he turned his head towards her, then got preoccupied with starring numbly at the tail feathers that were pocking out from under Greer's t-shirt. "Can you shake those?" - he asked curiously.

Greer
She gave him a blank look. "I imagine so. Shake what?"

The Dude
The Dude pulled his left hand from under his head and pulled tentatively on one of the feathers: "These" - he grinned.

Greer
"Uh, well, yes, I suppose so. Since I can shake my bum when need be." Greer plucked at the feathers on her hands, clearly flustered.

The Dude
That statement caused about a minute of laughing loudly from the Dude: "Really, Greer ... when did the need arose last time ... eh? No, seriously, when does one shake one's bum? C'mon, confess, girl!" - he was having a grand time!

Greer
Her faced burned. "Uh, I went to a dance or two in high school."

The Dude
"Whoooooo! Go Greer!" - he waved his flipper around in the air, still giggling: "Show! Show!"

If any serious conversation was to continue the Dude clearly needed to be either slapped or poured cold water onto or smth ...

Greer
"I'd rather not, thanks."

The Dude
"Oh ... oh man ..."- the Dude looked up at Greer who was now clearly looking distraught and upset. Something dawned in his happy little brain: "Oh ... I'm sorry." He struggled up and looked at her. Oh no, what a mess did he make now ...

Greer
"S'okay." she said quietly.

The Dude
"Oh ... no ... s**t s**t s**t" - he stood up and walked into the water, splashing it into his face then trotted back to Greer and sat next to her. "S..sorry" - he said sheepishly, not all that happy anymore. "You came to talk about something, did you?"

Why otherwise would she have suddenly plopped on the sand next to him. Greer's time was better spent chasing bugs around the jungle.

Greer
"Hmm? Oh, nothing. Just met a guy named Tim, heard a song, saw him change, you know." She tried to smile, but it didn't reach her eyes.

The Dude
"You mean Timmy? What do you mean - change?" - the Dude tried to coax at least some of his brain cells from the party mode into pay attention mode. They all gave him the finger and continued to shake their dendrites quite happily to congo beat.

Greer
"You know, change. He's becoming a skunk." Realizing she'd depressed her friend, she shook her head. "I'm sorry, I'll go and let you have fun."

The Dude
The Dude grabbed Greer's hand to stop her from leaving: "Hey hey there. Hold on. Wait a sec - he turned into a skunk right in front of you? FAR ******** OUT! Was it really creepy looking? Did it happen really fast? C'mon, talk to me here." - he nodded, feigning attention and a clear mind.

Greer
Greer started at the hand grab and blinked, confused. "He just sweated and sprouted fur and such. If anything else happened I REALLY don't think I want to know."

The Dude
The Dude let go of Greer's hand and leaned back: "Skunk, huh ... was he really whiney about it all? Timmy is a bit of a fragile soul ... ya know ..." - he looked at Greer: "You seem really down, girl ..."

Greer
"Gah!" Letting out a yell of frustration, Greer flopped back on to the sand, not caring at all if she got wet or sandy. "I'm sorry, it's just... stress sucks, you know?"

The Dude
"Yes, yes it does" - the Dude nodded with full understanding. "And it sucks having to deal with other people's fears and pain and tears. It's hard to stomach." - he looked at her and then his face stretched out into a silly grin: "But there's plenty of stuff around to help you deal!"

Greer
She looked at him, raising an eyebrow. "I don't smoke weed, Dude."

The Dude
"I wasn't saying weed." - he pouted. "I can make you a drink or something..." He stared at his overly long feet and wiggled the toes: "And I am hurt, Greer. I do not judge you cuz you collects bugs, man. Don't judge the habit. It's not doing anyone any harm ... and in fact it's probably PERFECTLY legal here on the island." - he grinned wide at her, jocking.

Greer
Laughing despite herself, Greer rolled her eyes at him. "Okay, okay, but only because you're a big cute marshmellow man."

The Dude
The Dude snorted at the "cute marshmallow man" and stood up, offering Greer a hand: "Marshmallow? Nah, I'm all chocolate!" - he grinned wide, a bit woozy on his feet from sun and the herb.

Greer
Accepting the help up she stood, treating the Dude to a light poke in the belly. "Funny, I've never seen chocolate rebound like that before."

The Dude
"Oi"- the Dude protested: "It's for bouyancy. And I'm ticklish!" - with that he pocked Greer back and then trotted for the bar, cackling gleefully. The brain cells inside the blond head were still happily dancing the conga.

Greer
Emitting a sound that was suspiciously not unlike an undignified 'meep,' Greer gave chase. "Hey!"

The Dude
The Dude reached the bar first and grabbed the drink list from the counter. He looked at it blankly then put it back and grabbed the first bottle of liquor that looked colorful and poured some into two glasses. He proceeded to take two more bottles, adding some liquor from each of them. Then he poured OJ on top and tasted the brew. Heh ... not bad .... he turned around and put the mixture in front of Greer:

"Let's name this "Skunk Funk". Cheers!" - he raised his own glass.

Greer
She eyed the dubious mixture, grinning skeptically. "You expect me to drink that?"

The Dude
Energetic nodding was the answer then the Dude clinked his glass against hers and drunk the "Skunk Funk".

Greer
Shaking her head Greer followed suit - coughing once her's was emptied. "Boy, you sure do know how to show a girl a good time."

The Dude
"Nah, that's what Vasile is for" - the Dude chuckled. "For good time knock on duplex number fourteeeeeeeeen."

Greer
Greer decided not to ask. Instead, for reasons completely unknown to her, she smiled prettily and leaned towards the Dude, fluttering her lashes. "But I like you so much better!"

The Dude
He must have misheard what she just said and leaned closer: "What? Whadcha say?"

Greer
"I said," she leaned closer, impeled by god knew what. A small part of her brain was already freaking out. "I like you better."

The Dude
The pyramidal neurons inside the blond head stopped the Chachacha. Greer's face was, like, inches away from his and she was batting eyelashes and telling him that she liked him. Not having any better idea, the Dude grabbed Greer's nose and grinned wide: "I like you better then Vasile, too!"

With that he put his flipper around her shoulder and announced: "Let's drink brudershaft!"

Greer
Greer put her head down on her arms, shoulders shaking.

The Dude
Okey, when Greer did that, the neurons inside the Dude's brain started playing Beethoven's 5th symphony, instead. Was this supposed to have been a confession? Oh gods ... he panicked and hugged Greer closer with one arm, trying to pry the her hands away from her face with the other.

"No ... oh Greer, come on girl ... no leaking ..." - he started.

Greer
She sat back, laughing so hard she couldn't breathe. Gulping air, she did her best not to hyperventilate. "Not crying... laughing... okay!"

Wiping her face, she grinned at her friend. "You're the best, you know that?"

The Dude
Phew. "Oh .. heh ... thanks man!" - he blushed and scratched the back of his head. Wow, why did he overreact like that? She was clearly just laughing. "Want another drink or are you all happy and god and not stressed anymore?"

Greer
She shook her head, still chuckling. "No, I'm fine thanks. I think I'm going to go eat and take a nap, both of which will cement this feeling better you've made me do." On an impulse she leaned forward and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before heading off towards the village. "Thanks again!" she called over her shoulder as she disappeared from view.

The Dude
Oh sweet! Kiss from a lovely maiden ^_^ He didn't deserve such love but grinned wide anyway. "Any day Greer! Thanks to you, too" - he pointed to his cheek. He he he he he ... watching Greer leave, he was dangling his legs and admiring the tail feathers. Eventually he'd persuade her to shake them. A few more Skunk Funks ...

Greer had been willing herself to sleep for a good four hours now, and it just wasn't working. She wanted unconsciousness, partly for rest and partly so she didn't have to think about how she acted around her friend the Dude recently. What in heaven's name was wrong with her? How could she act like that, so brazen, so forward? She was bouncing between mortified and wishing she knew more about the effects of marajuana on the brain. If she were really, really lucky, he wouldn't remember. She'd abused their friendship, taken advantage of the situation, and now had no idea why or how she'd done it. Greer was the very model of a non-flirt, having little to know experience in even the basics of social interaction, let alone the complicated dance that flirtation involved. She could barely talk to people about the weather - where had all that eyelash fluttering come from? It had been as if another will was supercedeing her own, telling her to interact, to win over. It was very similar to the one that told her she was hungry for meat when all she wanted was a nice salad. Feathers were one thing, but this? This was just... frightening.

Her mind continued to race, and Greer knew she was going to pay for it in the morning. About the only plus side to this whole thing was that she was still diurnal, except, of course, for tonight.

Amaya Vaughan
Amaya sat at one of the many tables in the cafeteria alone, her eyes downcast and staring at the coffee cup between her gloved hands. Her eyes were still somewhat watery and every now and then she would wipe a tear from her cheek that managed to slip out. After having that horrible dream she had scrambled through a shower and slipped on some clothes before darting to grab a cup of coffee. There was no way in hell she was going to sleep again after that.

She twisted the mug back and forth in her palms as she stared at it, not wanting to look up at the horrible bare cafe. She was in duplex 20, right? Meaning their were 20 people here... and not one of them were in the cafeteria? That was kinda weird. Regardless, she really hopped that someone would come in soon... anyone really. Even though she was still slightly crying and their was a snowballs chance in hell she would tell them about her dream, she still would have liked someone to talk to. Amaya wondered where Thorn was or if she was in the health center thing getting her lessons...

Hargun
Hargun had been having a dreadfully hard time getting to sleep at night lately, her head absolutely not wanting to shut down. She was very exhausted and had a rather fatigued look, her eyes had formed tiny purple rings and she was constantly yawning. Other than that though, she was somehow able to maintain a generally perky mood throughout the days.

Today she decided to get out and chat with her fellow islanders, and hopefully get a bite to eat.. her tummy roaring at her. She left her duplex miracously without her sketchbook and headed very slowly towards the cafeteria. As soon as she entered she didnt even bother to look for a place to sit, until after gathering up a large a** plate of food, and carrying it witha lazy slump. She looked around and spotted a rather unfamiliar face sitting alone at a table.

Yawning, she attempted to wave with one hand, almost dropping her tray. "Heya! Mind... *yawn* if I sit with you?" she asked and tried to lean against the table next to her.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer was on a meat mission, a new, icky tasting thing she'd had to get used to since the second injection had made her a carnivore. Striding into the cafeteria full of purpose, she went straight to the food and grabbed two steaks before even thinking to look around for people. Spying the artist Hargun sitting next to someone she didn't know, Greer grinned and sat down at the table.

"Hello Hargun! How are you?"

Amaya Vaughan
The young girl blinked and looked up at Hargun, snapped from her daze. She smiled immediantly and nodded, wiping her eyes clean. "Sure! I was kinda hopeing I'd bump into someone else." She went to take a sip of her coffee when the other woman approached with... FEATHERS?! Oh god. What the ********. Amaya stopped in mid-sip just... stareing. No, it was rude to stare. Blink danm you, BLINK!

Hargun
Before Hargun sat next to Amaya she found the voice of someone she DID recognize, and apon turning to greet Greer.. "Hey Greer- HOLY s**t!" she said, and dropped her plate... luckily on the table.

Rushing to sit down, Hargun scooted up next to the table and got up in Greer's face, staring.. and poking at the sprouted feathers. "Wha... wha.. what the heck happened to you?" she gasped and sat back, looking to Amya and smiled awkwardly then back to Greer. Her appearance kinda woke Hargun up a bit. Picking up one of her rolls she crammed the thing in her mouth without chewing, so suprised by her friend's changes.

Greer Cassenwari
Startled, Greer sat perfectly still for Hargun's inspection, smiling shakily when it was over. Spending all her time with Ambrose and the Dude meant she'd somewhat forgotten about how physical her changes were. Oops.

"I'm sorry I startled you Hargun." Gesturing to her feathers, yellowing legs, and meat-filled plate she shrugged. "I got my second injection."

Amaya Vaughan
Okay, enough stareing... stop it... stop it. Amaya finally forced herself to blink and shook her head before looking back to Hargun and the bird... woman... thing. "Mmmyeeeah... I think I'm deathly confused and in shock right about now." She set her mug on the table and looked between the red-head and Greer with one eyebrow raised.

Hargun
Hargun started joking on her roll.. it was obviously going to happen. Finally coughing it back up she stared at Greer with somewhat frightened eyes. "SECOND injection?" She exclaimed. She figured the shot would be a one time thing and wouldnt require a lot of revisiting with Moreau or any of the strange lab assistants here, but if a second injection was comming, it meant she was gonna get one too. Shaking, she tried to eat a spoonfull of mashed taters. "Wow.. you.. youve really changed just from that second shot huh?" attempting to swallow some she started up again. "Oh my god Greer.. what ARE you changing into.. and.. and what else is going to happen..?" she eyed the two giant steaks.

Hargun sighed and yawned at the same time, and put her fork down then turned her head to Amaya. After getting over Greer a second thought shot in her head. I bet she doesnt know.. she MUST be new. MUST be.. she thought and began to furiously attack her food, trying to avoid having to speak further on the subject while they were on it.. about transforming and all.

The Dude XD
His fierce red tomcat in tow, the Dude walked into the cafeteria, cigarette in his mouth, hands in his pockets - ya know, the works. He saw Greer, the redheaded girl who drew and whose name he was currently forgetting and a new teenager. This one had dark haired and the cutest nose on the island. So he grinned and walked up to the girls

"Hello, ladies" - he nodded and waved his flipper hand in a greeting.

Meanwhile, Captain Morgan sniffed out the steak that Greer had aquired and decided that htis woman was now his new best friend.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer sighed, gulping down half a steak to get her strength up for the lecture ahead. "This entire island is set aside for experiments being conducted on us by our host, Doctor Moreau. The first injection you recieve seems to get your body ready to react to the ones that follow. We're all turning into different animals - my two friends are becoming a wolf and a sea lion, the woman who lives downstairs from me is becoming reptilian, a fellow I met recently is going towards skunk, and I'm becoming a bird of prey, although I'm not entirely sure what species yet. Each injection will change us a little more until... until the Doctor decides we're done, I suppose. Most of the second injections happen while you're sleeping, if that makes you feel any better. No being held down and tortured per se."

Stopping to eat, the other half of her first steak disappeared. THe faster she ate, the less she had to taste.

Turning to the Dude, she blushed a little, smiling and giving Captain Morgan a halting pat. "Hi Dude!"

Amaya Vaughan
"OHGOD!" Amaya jumped five feet in the air as the Dude entered, shivers going down her spine. She then listened to everything Greer was saying even though her eyes were now locked on the new arrival. Once she was finished her head slowly turned to look back at Greer. Her shoulders slumped and she sighed, not really being able to really take all of that in. "Well... guess it's my fault for getting tricked into that bullcrap he told me and I'm screwed now." She shivered again, then caught sight of the fluffy feline. "KITTY!" She reached down and tried to usher him over towards her. Ah, distractions. Gotta love 'em.

Hargun
Hargun rubbed her tired eyes, now a lot more calmed down.. mustve been the overall shock of seeing her friend look a whole lot different.

"Well I knew we were all changing but.. yea like I said, didnt figure it would be such a long strenuous prosses.. but oh well." noticing the Dude Hargun tried to smile. "Hey Dude!" she didnt pay much attention to Capt. Morgan though.. she didnt like cats. Not much at all.

Hmm.. in my sleep huh.. yea right.. LIKE ILL EVER GET TO SLEEP. she thought to herself, and started chewing at a greasy looking burger she picked up. Burgers, taters, and a roll. What an interesting appetite.

After she took a bite she glanced at Amaya again. "Well, cant say its your fault.. he got me too... crushed my hopes and dreams.. took everything away from me.. BUT HEY, Im here alive and /somewhat/ happy right..?" she asked uneasily.

Cassidy Smith
With a plate bearing a single, if large, rare steak, and a glass of lukewarm iced tea, Cassidy made her way into the dining hall of the cafeteria. Meals had just been so boring, lately.

Fortunately, she'd picked up a little cup of chocolate pudding. She could deal with that.

There seemed to be a lot of people, today, and some of them she didn't even know. Yikes. Cassidy hesitated, her tongue flickering, then approached the table.

"Um. Can I join you?"

The Dude XD
The Dude pulled up a chair and sat down by Greer, stretching out his legs. He was not wearing shoes and the oversized feet flopped strangely in the air when he moved.

"Hey Greer" - he winked at her, then grinned charmingly at the blush. Did Greer actually have a thing for him? Nah ... it had to have been the alcohol ...

Turning to Amaya who had just gotten the low down, he listened to her and Hargun. The new teenager seemed to be taking it ... alright. Which was great! Maybe that is why Moreau seemed to be concentrating on teenagers nowdays - they seemed to have less to loose and tolerated the news much better. He let them talk, not wanting to add fuel to the barely smoldering fire.

Captain Morgan tolerated a pat or two from Greer and Amaya and jumped onto the table to investigate the steak business. Unfortunately, by the time he got that far, Greer had eaten it all. Greedy! Disgruntled, he stretched out on the table in front of everybody and gave the humans an evil eye, hoping that would frighten them into feeding him something good.

When Cassidy showed up, the Dude waved at her as well: "Yo! Sure thing." With his right hand he pulled up another chair from a neighboring table.

Greer Cassenwari
Using her hunger as an ecuse to hide her reaction to the wink, Greer leapt up, got another steak, and sat back down again. Chopping a fourth of it up into small pieces, she piled them on the table in front of the minature tiger, hoping appeasement would keep him from thinking about eating her cricket again.

"Hello Cassidy! How are you?" She smiled at the newly arrive, partially changed woman, glad to have yet another partial ally. Hargun and Amaya's reactions had been rather... unsettling.

Amaya Vaughan
"Well, I didn't really have many dreams or anything back home to begin with... so I guess this doesn't bother me as much as it should." She moved her coffee cup back and forth, not really feeling up to drinking any more of it. "Though what makes me mad is that I was lied to. I mean, that doctor guy creeped me out but I just thought it was that... natural scared of doctors thing." Amaya made a weird hand gesture to emphasis her point. "Thorn lied to me too which makes me kinda mad... but what pisses-"

She visually flinched, catching herself too late. "-... ANGERS me is all this lying stuff. I mean... he couldn't have gotten ALL of you with the lie he told me. Your too old... No offense." She held up a hand to the group who had gathered around the table, but refrained herself from diving into the reason she had been dragged here. There was no reason for the entire party to start pittying her for something that was over and done with. Amaya glanced up at Cassidy then looked away again to keep herself from stareing. They were all probably feeling pretty self-conscience without her gawking. "And... sorry about all the stareing. Couldn't help it." Green eyes went back down to the mug as she twirled it about on the table, looking up at the large fluffy cat every now and then but refusing the urge to grab it and squeeze it like some living security blanket.

Hargun
Hargun snorted. Too old? she shouted in her head, but just maintained a straight face.

"Ugh.. yea. We've complained about that factor of his actions a lot.. or I have at least. Dont really doubt anyone else here hasnt." she said and shook her head then looked to Cassidy. Because she hadnt met her before the scales and tounge didnt exactly cause her to jump... she was starting to feel guilty for inspecting Greer.. just natural of her to be interested in whats happening to her friends. She waved slightly to the blonde-haired girl and took another bite of her sandwhich, unable to swallow from a chain of yawns following.

"Oh my WORD. Why am I so freaking tired!" she accidentally thought outloud, then glanced around and went back to her food, wiping her face with her napkin and fiddling around the leftovers on the plate with her fork while watching Greer and Capt. Morgan.

Cassidy Smith
Cassidy was already carefully cutting her steak up into bite-sized peieces; she couldn't look up. There was too much shock in the eyes of these two new people--at least, that's what it seemed like to her.

"I miss my family, and my books, and snow. And ice cream." She sighed. "But, really. I don't know what they told you, but I came here for a job. At a hotel. And I was dumb, and believed them, and even when it turned out that there was no hotel, it was all just a... a... a misunderstanding," her mouth twisted, "I let them inject me and settled in just fine."

She took a piece of meat on her fork, popped it in her mouth, chewed two or three times and swallowed it mostly whole. Stupid new teeth.

The Dude XD
When Greer arrived with the steaks the Captain was pleased. Finally, a human who knew how to treat him with respect. Greer was added to the very short list of tolerable humans along with the Dude (sometimes) and the lunch lady (oh my love!). He chowed down, growling threateningly to himself as he gorged on meat.

Meanwhile, the Dude was distracted listening to Amaya. Hey, go girl. Now that was a very fatalistic take on the situation. That Moreau guy sure knew whom to pick for his projects. Well, at least he was getting better at it, the Dude corrected himself, remembering Ambrose. Poor guy, he seemed to be the one most screwed over by the situation ... him and Vasile ... but somehow, the Dude wasn't feeling all too sorry for the silver screen siren.

"Well, Amaya, he fed all of us various lies, some better and some worse. It's not hard to lie well to people if you know which buttons to push. And the folks from Feral Labs did their homework on all of us. Well, except me and Emelyn. We are kinda freebies on this island - shipwrecked after a storm. And ya know, one should never give up hope. Life has a way of turning out alright in the end. And ya know ... one adjusts."

He looked at his flippers and smiled back at Amaya: "Like, I get to swim so much better now, ya know? I"m the Dude by the by. That's what people call me. And I am turning into a sea lion" - he introduced himself.

Greer Cassenwari
Greer gave Cassidy a sympathetic look and them smiled at the table. "I thought I was coming to be a field entomologist. This was not true, but I've managed to become my own one-woman bug studying team on the island anyway, so it's worked out."

Swallowing the last of her steak, she frowned at the feathers on her hands, speaking to no one in particular. "You don't think my hands will become wings, do you? Cause that would be bad."

Amaya Vaughan
Amaya blinked and looked over at Hargun. She was about to say 'then get some sleep' but stopped herself. That was mean and too obvious. She listened to all the stories on how each person had winded up on the island. Jeeze, Moreau was... to put it simply, a dickhead. As she listened to Dude she nodded in complete agreement. "Exactly. This is just one more thing that I'll force myself through. I mean... NOTHING is perfect so their has to be SOME way off the island, right? It'll just take some time and a lot of thinking." She gave a shrug. Be positive. Positive was good.

Amaya smiled at the Dude and nodded to everyone. "Names Amaya, by the way. He raked me in by telling me this was some kinda resort thingy for older orphaned teenagers. When I saw Thorn it didn't exactly make me suspicious if y'know what I mean." She frowned and sat back, her gloved hands idly fiddling with her locket. "So uh..." The young girl wondered for a moment if it was a touchy subject to ask, but Dude seemed open enough about it. "Do you all know what your turning into 'n stuff?"

Hargun
Hargun looked nervous to what Greer said. What if she too was turning into a bird or something that wouldnt have the use of hands? Then how could she draw? No way.. Moreau's mean but as Lauren said hes somewhat a nice guy.. he wouldnt have given me something winged. Wait.. unless Aubrey.. did... she thought nervously and shook her head.

She sat back and slid her tray foward. She didnt finish everything on there like she thought she would. Looking to Amaya she shrugged. "Id LIKE to know.. desprately. " sighing she smiled slightly to everyone. They were turning out to be pretty interesting creatures, but who knew if shed be the first freaky or odd-like animal.

"I just hope I dont turn into something that will cause conflict among us all." drifting off a bit she laughed to herself. "Maybe Im turning into a sloth.. hence my exhaustion.."

Cassidy Smith
"I haven't asked." Cassidy made a face. "Some sort of snake. I dunno what else has a forked tongue, anyway."

She stared down into her supper. "I really, really, really hate snakes. I wonder if I'm going to be poisonous. And... wings! I don't even know what's going to happen to my arms and legs."

She grimaced. How would she hold up her books?

The Dude XD
The Dude turned to Greer: "Hm ... that's a good question. My arms are turning into flippers, just like a sea lion's but it look like I get to keep my thumb and index finger. Maybe if your amrs turn into wings you'll get to keep some of the digets as well?"

Greer Cassenwari
She nodded at her friend. "I hope you're right."

Turning to the artist, she spoke. "You know Hargun, you could just be sliding towards nocturnal. Plenty of animals don't come out during the day." Giving the girl a smile and a pat on the hand, Greer stood and bussed her tray. Returning to the table to give them all a smile, the Captain a pat, and the Dude a shy wink.

"Bye all!" She called, striding back to her room to gear up for another exciting day chasing bugs. Despite the feathers, this was the life.

It had taken some doing to convince her desk chair it really wanted to be outside on her tiny balcony as opposed to staying safe in the darkened den of her room, but Greer could be just as stubborn as furniture when she put her mind to it. Half an hour later the straight-backed oak seat had admitted defeat, and she'd been lazing around outside ever since, pretending to be editing her field notebook while mostly just soaking up the sun and enjoying the weather. She hadn't done so in years!

She looked down at her arms, always amazed by her new, sharp vision. She left the fake glasses on her desk for the day, since she'd noticed she was getting some funny tanlines or her face and wanted to keep them from developing further. Heck, she was getting funny tanlines all over. She was getting tan! And freckled, since her mother was of old Irish stock, which liked to show in her genetics at the oddest times, like the greenish hue to her eyes and the baby pictures that showed her with red fuzz on her head. Her father's first generation Mediterranian roots had won out as she'd gotten older, so her hair had darkened to a respectable brown nigh black and her eyes had ended up a safe, golden hazel. When she avoided the sun, as she had for years with her study and pre-dawn jog times, her skin stayed an even creamy caramel, which was good since her mum had always gone translucent when she'd spent too much time inside. As a young child she'd always marveled that she could see most of her mother's veins in the winter and upset that her father refused to reveal his. She'd thought he was hiding them on purpose.

What really amused her, though, was that her feathers matched her. Cedar brown and mahogany black, they went well with her natural coloring, if not her clothing choices. Her legs did match her trousers, though. Was this planned by the doctor? Not knowing him well enough to weigh in on his appreciation of asthetics, she shrugged and supposed it was possible. After all, if he were ever to market any of this, having examples that looked better than not could only be an asset. Greer shook her head, frowning at herself. What an utterly odd thought!

Sighing contendedly as she stretched out her legs and rested in the sun, she put her notebook on the floor, closing her eyes and letting her thoughts drift. Left to its own devices, her minds eye showed her pictures of insects, places, friends, friends' behinds...

Mentally snapping at herself and threatening to go back inside and work if it did that again, Greer rubbed her eyes. Where had those thoughts come from?
