"So because you have had no reason before now to check the cloaks," Nadya said coldly, truly angry now, "the Queen nearly lost her great-grandson. Elves of all three nations lose their children almost daily, and you do nothing about it because you have no reason to look."
She took a step forward and forced herself not to clench her fists in frustration. "What about the bags of goods they come in and leave with? Why are the humans' animals more heavily burdened when they leave than when they come? Where are the dwarfs getting the gold to pay for all of this? I heard with my own ears today their leader - who is miles underground, I might add, which I doubt you know - is offering to make anyone who can give him the location of one of the princes rich enough never to have to work again?"

"It should be a standard procedure, not a reason," Yue added to Nadya's point, "To think the dwarves would idily stay here without trying something is lucterive at best."
Personally, if he had to be stuck in his hellhole for the rest of his life, he would be working towards a way to get out himself. Or maybe these peole have been here for so long on duty that they tend to forget that.
"I'm sure you've noticed that this place is no haven, surely the lack of resistence to living here must have set off warning signs."

"The dwarfs have never resisted, even when they were sent up here in the first place," the Captain pointed out. "Most of them didn't want the war either, they just fought because they actually had a damned good chance of destroying the Southlanders. Nearly did it, too, and probably would have if we hadn't gone down to help. Besides," he added, "if they did they would be shot, plain and simple. They know better than to show resistance."

"Which is probably why they didn't show resistance," Nadya pointed out. "Do you have any idea what they're even up to down there? They've got an entire fortress. If they wanted to disappear, or tunnel out somewhere else and leave this place, they're already most of the way there. Especially with sentries like you and your men watching them. It's not even a challenge for them."

"They want out," Yue replied, "In short of what she is saying, they're not suicdial after all. Just because one does not show resistance, does not mean one likes their lot in life. Just because one loses a war, doesn't mean you have to accept the outcome."
He tilted his head a bit at the captain as if he was considering the man's worth.
"You cannot tell me Captain, that if it were you down there having to live in this pit, for the rest of your life being watched by the dwarves that you would simply take it without any thought of trying to escape."

"Since the dwarfs were created, they've lived in this type of land," the Captain retorted. "It's what they were created for! Elves were created for the forests, the humans for the plains, and the dwarfs for the rocks. Everyone knows that!"
He pointed back at the window. "As for that pit, as you call it, they created it themselves! It was a rocky plain when we first sent them here, and then I can see that yes they might have wanted to leave. But they made it into a home for themselves, and they've been fine!"

Nadya's felt a wave of coldness wash over her, and her Sight took over her vision for a moment. When she could see properly again, she glanced at Yue.
We have to hurry, she thought to him, if we're going to get this done before the others reach the leader ...
She looked back at the Captain and thought, Use some magic on him. I have nothing either offensive or defensive. Don't hurt him, just scare him.

Yue took a deep breath and replied back icily as he focused most grateful for a full moon, "I don't care if they were made for sea Captain."
The temperture in the room dropped until it was well below zero, freezing point as it were. Frost began to slowly creep along the floor and up the furniture.
"And I certainly do not care if you think that they are fine where they are..."
If there was glass it was gathering frosted webs at this point, and probably one could not see out of them.
"I care about the children that are disappearing from elven lands, and I care that they are ending up in this forsaken place instead! So either," Yue finished sending another cold wave into the room, "You deal with it as you should be, or you will be replaced in the worse way possible!"
He hit the wall nearest to him hard letting the tiny iciles that were forming on the ceiling to crash down harmlessly around them, shattering like glass.

The captain jumped back against the wall, away from the falling icicles. His blue eyes were wide with shock and fear, and he drew his sword automatically as if to defend himself.
"All right!" he shouted finally. "All right! I'll do it! First light tomorrow, I'll take as many men as are available and we'll go through the entire settlement! Just get rid of the ice!"
Of all the things that he would have imagined could have done him in ...

After this, Nadya swore, she was never going to leave the warmth of the Southland again. She couldn't blame the captain for complaining about the ice, though she knew it wasn't the temperature that was bothering him. Still, she wasn't going to say anything about it, since she had asked Yue to do something in the first place.
"First light," she nodded, her eyes narrow once more. "Be sure of it."
She glanced at Yue and nodded. Their work here was done. Now all they had to do was get back to the shelter and wait for the others, and any children they might manage to rescue along the way.

Yue held out a hand and gave it a twist of the wrist as if he was grabbing something up. Unlike the Southlands, he could not simply let nature take it's course, it was not as warm and it was night. So isntead he sucked the cold out of hte room by wrapping it around himself, causing the frost to recess back and the ice to disappear.
He didn't mind being this cold, like winter, he actually found it pleasant.

Meanwhile, Gion, Donovan, Triton and Mia were nearly at the room where they had met with the dwarfen leader earlier that day. It was warmer down here than it had been outside, but it was still fairly cold. Gion wondered how Nadya and Yue were doing, and if they had been successful in their endeavour.
So how do we do this? he signed to Donovan, turning and walking backwards so that Donovan could see his hands more clearly (or as clear as was possible in these dimly lit tunnels). Walk in and just start attacking? Talk to them first? What?

"Talk to them first," Donovan replied, "I need to set up the seals, this way we don't get interrupted and no one on the outside can hear if they call for re-enforcements. By us more time that way."
His mind was already going over the seals, the room was large, but it would keep anyone from escaping, or realizing until it was too late, at least he hoped.
"As for how to keep them busy, I don't know," Donovan added with a shrug, "I would suggest pretend Mia is going to get sold, but she's a bit old I think for them."
And scary, and creepy he added in his mind.
"The seals won't take long."

Gion nodded and glanced at Triton, then looked back at Donovan. I'll have to be Triton talking to them, then, he signed, because I can't talk, and you need to set up the runes. And for some reason I seriously doubt they'd want to talk to Mia.
He looked over at Triton. What do you think?

Triton nodded, "I should be able to do that... just give me something to talk about."
He wasn't sure what he was going to talk about with the dwarves at all though. He supposed though if it was just long enough for Donovan to set up the seals it wouldn't kill him to do so.
