Maia fell asleep with the help.of the music; she'd have to remember this trick when she faced another storm.
When she awoke, Toby was closer to her than they'd been when they'd fallen asleep. She stared. Well. Huh. She couldn't decide if it was awkward or adorable. "Good morning," She said, flashing him a sleepy smile.

Toby's breath caught as he woke to the sound of Maia's voice. He groaned and rubbed an eye in the same way he did every time he was awakened prematurely. It was nothing against the selkie.
It took him a few moments to remember his company and then he realized he'd moved closer to her during the night. Well, he certainly hadn't meant to do that. Hopefully she wasn't offended. He hadn't touched her had he? He certainly hoped not.
"How'd it work?" he asked, tapping his ear.

"Good," Maia smiled at him. "Thank you for helping me, Toby. You're a great friend." She sat up and stretched. "Well, today we go shopping," She said, climbing out of bed. "I'll go get ready." She offered him the iPod back.

Toby smiled. Sure, whatever it took. "You're welcome."
He remained lying down to stretch and nodded. Sure, grocery shopping, why was that exciting? How in the world did Maia have so much energy when she'd just woken up? Unless she hadn't just woken up. Unless she was watching him.
...nah, he doubted it. He took his iPod and then went about preparing for the day, cleaning and getting dressed.
"What do you say, Maia?" he asked, voice still deep and sleepy as he wandered toward her. "Eat here or cafe?" He wasn't the most eloquent when he'd just woken up, not at all.

Maia considered the question before finishing her routine. She got dressed, brushed her teeth and hair--it seemed to have become a hassle, tangling each morning. "Can we go to the cafe?" she asked. Since he'd suggested it, it must be alright. "Do you get breakfast there often?" she asked. They'd already been there once since she'd come to live with them.

"No, not usually." It was as much a treat for him as it was for her. Dari was a great guy, but he could only talk so much in public and never ate. Still, Toby would have felt bad not bringing him had it not been the alien's suggestion in the first place.
Toby waited for Maia to be done before taking over the bathroom himself, doing his hair and brushing his teeth. He was a pretty low-maintenance man.

It was so much easier for men to get ready, Maia noticed. "I'm sure they'll have something good," She beamed. "Then we go shopping?" She was still fairly excited about getting groceries. Maybe they'd get something she could make to show her appreciation. He'd invited her to live with him, he'd comforted her when she was scared. She wanted to do something for him.

"Oh, I'm not saying they're not good, I'm just saying I usually cook at home," Toby said with a smile. It wasn't Dari's fault he couldn't eat, but it made going out to dinner a sort of selfish, one-sided affair and so Toby generally went out alone or with a group. Today was different.
Toby passed by Dari on his way to the kitchen and patted him on the back. Dari hadn't been expecting it and jigged a bit.
"You gonna be alright here?"
"Absolutely," Dari agreed with a nod. The curtains were closed, he was in his semi-natural form and wasn't required to wear anything but pants to maintain decency around their house guest. Life was good.
"You're sure you don't want to come?" Toby was coming back now with his shopping list.
"Spend an hour putting on makeup to wander around a store full of things I won't eat? No, I'm fine." Dari smiled up at his partner, who nodded.
"Alright, Maia. Are you ready?"

Dari certainly seemed happy with the arrangement, but Maia was concerned. Wouldn't he get lonely? He didn't have human needs like eating or hydration, but companionship was universal. She gave Dari a hug as Toby came out of the kitchen with his shopping list. "Call me if you want," she said.
"I'm ready," she said, smiling at Toby. "Come on! I planned to buy things too. I'm going to get something for Pixie and something for Seamus. I'll pay for the cupcake stuff too. Maybe get a pancake mix. Do you like pancakes?" She was hoping she could make them for him at some point.

Dari stood to hug Maia properly and truly he did appreciate the gesture. Not all of humanoid life was as kind or understanding. He smiled to her and nodded. "Alright."
With that they were out, chatting on the way to the car. Dari's had since made it back to HQ where it tended to live.
"Sure, pancakes are good," he said with a nod, then ducked into the car and waited for Maia to join him. "There's gonna be some rules, though, alright?" He looked to her as he put on his seat belt. His eyes were bright and his lip slightly curled, but boy did he mean these rules, or else they'd have a desperately unhealthy selkie on their hands.

Oh, good. He liked them. She would have to look up a video recipe at some point and find out how to make them. She still didn't feel confident enough to not misread an ingredient. She climbed into the car and gave him a look of disbelief. "Rules?" she echoed. A dozen protests rose in her throat at once: she was a grown woman, he couldn't tell her what to do--but he could. She was living in his house. And he might decide to put her back in the HQ apartments. She grimaced.
"What rules?" she asked.

Toby laughed outright at Maia's tone of voice. Well then! She was a little profound, a little ditzy, and a lot stubborn. He wasn't sure yet if that was a good thing.
"The rules are, the cookie aisle and the candy aisle. Two things max from each. Maximim. Two or one or none, but no more than two. We're pretty sure fae can't develop diabetes but I'd rather not try." He was attempting to reason with her. If she used her own money, he couldn't stop her, and then they'd all get fat. "We'll be back once a week or so if you want to try anything new, it's exciting, but I'm pretty sure none of us would fit through the door otherwise." He gave her a bit of a look. He knew fae, he knew the sugar addiction, and he'd never had to worry about it in his own house before.

The rules were reasonable, Maia didn't have an objection to them. She nodded in understanding. "And diabetes is bad," she said, nodding. "I don't think I can get that." She was silent for a moment, in thought. "I want to see what's in every aisle, though. I've never been."
"How about I get one from each for me, and then one from each for you? Then we can share." Maybe they could get an ice cream cone? Did they sell those at grocery stores?

Toby shook his head. "Don't worry about me. It's a fun time to get to try new things. Besides, whatever you pick I'm sure I'll steal some of." He gave her a look while they began down the road. "Not too much. We can go through every aisle, though!" That was something most people preferred to avoid doing at all costs, but it was sort of how he did things anyway.

"Not too much," Maia agreed, smiling at him. "I was thinking a couple different fruits, I like fruit a lot--and some salad, bleh--but it's healthy, I guess, and maybe some fish. I promised Seamus some fish when we go to the lake so I'll have to bring him some then. I heard tuna's canned. Do you think he'd like that? Or should I get him something fresher? Do you know if they have honey? I'd like to try that too."
