So what are tourney players going to do about the smash ball? It's an item, but also technically part of every characters' moveset, which some may rely on more than others.

Sauvie Tatsuman Sauvie Tatsuman Yes, we were.
The only thing they hadn't officially confirmed was the Loser Super Smash. Which I think is a bad mechanic all around. I mean if the point is to Earn the FS why is it needed to get one if you suck? It'll only score you one-3 free KOs. Useless in stock matches.
Especially if this "substantial lead" is as much as I think it is.
Well in a Demo video an Ike dies 4 times before getting a free FS, and another has a very bad Pikachu and an even worse Sonic getting them for free after 3-4... so I don't Like it Yea, but I usually play 3-4 stock matches anyway, so It doesn't bother me much. Plus I'm pretty sure they'll let you turn it off. It just seems like one of those you would be able to. Like Friendly Fire.
On that note, wouldn't it suck if you were doing a handicapped match at like, 50 damage with this on? Even if you're kicking a**, an SD combined with that free FS would suck.

I think personally that the Smash Ball and many other items will be left on if the exploding containers or containers altogether can be turned off.
That was the main reason they were turned off in the first place.
The Smart Bomb, Curry, the Golden Hammer, and the recovery items are going to go though.

Yeah but Tourney rules vary from game to game. a Pro Melee player when playing even the Demo that this game feels more like ssb64's 1v1 matches and even said that we might go back to 5-6 stock for tourneys instead of 4. (could be HugS, Gimpy or maybe even T!mmy... but it was said somewhere.) and if were back up to 5-6 in tourney situation a free FS could really be bad for that case... I just hope the Pity Smash is selectable on/Off. No question

Also, he said something about L Canceling and Item Catching were made easier. I think Sakurai's trying to level the playing field for Smash Newbies.
Don't worry. I'm almost certain it will be.

Well lets be fair, Gimpy was playing as Bowser, and apparently Bowser can live to around 300% per stock when DI is taken into effect. But yeah it strikes me as odd since recoverys seem better, Knockback seems decreased and everything else is simplified... who knows, only time will tell. It Damn well better be. I hate the Pity Smash... such an un needed addition.

Actually I think Mario's only improvment from what we know is he is now a combo machine of doom. Fludd is aparently useless though =/

I fight my friend with him while they use the cheap fox/falco tech's. And I still hold my own. His FS just improves what ill be able to do with him.

PITY smash?! What the Hell?! o.o
This will definitely mix up matches and make them more unpredictable, but it just seems like a really cheap idea to me.
However, I do like that you can force someone to lose their Final Smash if you attack them before they use it. There's a lot of strategy that's going to go into this item, but it makes me fear that now the whole match will focus on the use of the Smashes, and it will change what we loved about the previous games: frantic, fast attacks, unbelievable recoveries, KO'ing through skill and not the lucky use of one item or move.
Yes, I argue for the use of items in tournaments, but the Final Smash is essentially the embodiment of what all the purists have been complaining about before.

Turning them off would be like playing all the tournaments in single button mode. It's just stupid. FSs are made to balance the weaker characters with the stronger ones. A prime example of this is Metaknight's FS and Bowser's FS.
I REALLY hope that the Smash Ball is tournament legal. Otherwise the game once again becomes unbalanced.
That said, I can see why you'd want to turn them off for casual play. Especially if the Pity FS can't be turned off.

I agree....they should most definetly keep FRS's in tournaments because like you said it is making certain chars way to unbalanced...but I can already see people complaining that it counts as an item scream
