Ryugi cringed a bit as his neck burned and Joshua passed him, moving into the open cavern. He didn't look at it too much, as D had said she had much to discuss, and he didn't want to get on her bad side any more than he already had as long as it could be avoided. He moved over to the fire and chose a spot to sit down, a rock not far from the small fire and the pot sat. He wondered at how strange the relationship between master and servant was when dealing with these two. Joshua's words were heard, but not taken to heart. However, Ryugi imagined that they were probably true in some respect, as "knowing what's fun" would require she have emotions, and as far as Ryugi could tell, she hadn't manifested any strong signs of these whatsoever. But he quieted his head as he sat down. Apparently there was business that needed to be addressed. He opted not to open his mouth and say anything, nor to question Joshua's or his own current situation. Doing so would only take time, and this girl had made it crystal clear that her time was precious. Thus, he sat, and waited for her to speak.

The girl waited while Ryugi came to sit by the fire, though it seemed she was less concerned with waiting for him and more concerned about the status of her beverage.

Joshua pulled the pot from over the fire, removed a ceramic mug from the pack beside it, and mixed together the hot water and the tea leaves in the pot before pouring it... and finally handing it over with an annoyed grunt.

For once she seemed almost pleased; taking the mug in both hands and resting it on her lap for a moment while she sat quietly upon the stone in the large cavern.

Now that she had it, she did not seem to be in any hurry to drink it. It seemed the act of making him do it for her was enough to satisfy whatever urge she had.

"Boy."

The girl finally broke the silence, speaking to Ryugi without mincing words.

"You have much to learn still, but there is promise in you. Become my servant."

Her head turned to the side, and she looked to the Angaran expectantly.

Well, that was amazingly blunt. Business indeed.

I'm not sure if thats an order or not, but as with any position, I think its only fair that I inquire as to the nature of what I'd be doing if I were to serve under you. I can't just blindly say yes. And that goes for any business proposition.

Ryugi wasn't simply going to say yes or no unless he knew what it entailed. Joshua, the only other servant of this girl's that Ryugi knew of for certain, did not seem very pleased with his servitude, and often made it very clear just how much he hated her. His comment about "not knowing what's fun" came back into Ryugi's mind as he spoke to her. As well as his comment earlier during their fight about "not trusting anyone". And while D hadn't ever given Ryugi reason to mistrust her, he WAS wary about agreeing to a contract of some sort, especially if he did not know the terms...

"Mr. Kazamaru, you would-"

"He's too soft." Joshua cut her off suddenly.

There was no sudden jumping to his feet to object, nor was there any attempt to make an intervention on Ryugi's behalf by doing something as dramatic as attempting to remove either one of them from the little sewing circle that had been set up. He sat up against a rock on the ground with one knee pulled up and his arm resting upon it. Casual, but insistent.

"Don't interrupt. You are here to assist, not-"

User Image
"We're not all like your precious Uriel, little girl. Playing the Good Shepherd is harder for most of us than it was for him. Maybe you've become blind after all, if you can't see past the success of your favorite toy."

He glared at her from across the fire. Staring straight through the little puppet she liked to wear just to goad him. It was clear to the both of them that there was no love here... perhaps there had been once, long ago when she had made his contract, but very little remained from that time.

"Maybe in a hundred years. Maybe in ten. But not yet. He's too soft for it. He hasn't lost everything."

"Uriel is an exception. The boy will learn to accept it."

The girl looked sideways to Ryugi once more and shook her head.

"Anyone would be lacking if you compare them only to him."

"Don't be a fool! You saw him in the cave! There's no chance, you'll just end up hating him like-"

"You've never obeyed the rules. The boy is proper enough to respect the code."

She scowled at him, her little fingers white against the ceramic cup in her lap as her body leaned forwards ever so slightly.

"Give it up," the Reaper said back unwaveringly; his heel digging into the ground a bit to push his back up straight against the rock behind him to counter the girl's glare.

"He's a martyr, not a killer."

There was a brief pause as he stared her down through the firelight, but eventually he knew the decision was out of his hands. Without another word he pushed up from the ground with a hand on his knee and walked away from the fire; pacing the edge of the lake to where the snow was still falling.

The girl raised the mug in her hands and took a slow sip of the hot tea.

"Boy, what is your decision? Will you become a servant of Death?"

The ceramic mug rested in her lap again, cradled with both hands.

User ImageRyugi listened quietly as he watched and heard the two individuals speak to one another. They spoke about him being too soft, or not strong enough for the job. About how he was a martyr, not a killer. This girl... That must be it. Her true name. She called him childish back in the cave, now offered him the chance to fight as her servant, promising that he'd learn to accept whatever it was that he might be doing. Ryugi wasn't some sort of Grim Reaper. We was not some Angel of Death. This animosity towards her coming from Joshua was warranted it would seem. Ryugi had not lost everything, he still had something to fight for, and it appeared that Joshua, and perhaps this "Uriel" had lost everything, and chosen to be Death's messenger rather than simply to live without a reason, a purpose.

If you're asking me to become Death's right hand, a Shepperd to the Afterlife, I'm afraid I must refuse. I still have something to live for, to fight for. And I'd gladly give every last breath in my body to fight for that thing. I'm sorry to disappoint you Lady Jennifer, D, ... Death, whatever your true name might be, but I'm no Hand of Death...

...I'm just a country kid with a sword.

(( Need to run, so no time to make a real post just yet. ))

"A pity."

She lifted the mug to her lips again, taking a small sip of the hot tea, and then lowered it back to her lap.

"Then let me ask you this, Mr. Kazamaru. Can you make a proper cup of tea?"

Holding the mug out beside her, she dumped it's contents on the ground with disdain.

I'm a tea drinker myself. I don't know what your tastes are, but I can try.

Ryugi would get up and take the pot from the fire to fill it with water to boil from the lake. He'd stoop down to fill the pot with the water, and rinse the used water out of the pot.

The water in the pool was crystal clear, cold, and clean. Other than the layer of snow floating upon the surface of the water there did not seem to be a single leaf or piece of dirt in the water at all. It was perfectly clean and pure, and it answered any question about how such a large number of animals could have made a home in the middle of a desert like this one.

"A long time ago, before this pack made their home here, there were others that lived in this cave."

D slipped off the edge of the stone she was sitting upon and stood up; dusting the front of her dress with her hands for a moment before she proceeded to the water's edge behind the Angaran.

"Razliek."

Across the pond, the man that had parted ways with them stepped out onto the surface of the water; causing only slight ripples across the glazed surface as he proceeded into the center of it and drew his sword.

With the pommel dangling from his hand Joshua touched the tip of it to the water, and like oil and water the ice separated from the surface of the pond and was swept outwards to the shore.

Now that the ice no longer covered the surface of the water the moonlight from above was able to reach through to the bottom of the pool... and once again Ryugi lay his eyes upon a graveyard. Several humanoid skeletons littered the basin, even so close to the shore. The number increased as the pool went deeper, and the bones piled up in the deepest parts.

"Come along."

The girl stood beside Ryugi, extending a hand to him.

Despite the fact that the bones strewn across the bottom of the lake was rather creepy, Ryugi didn't flinch all that much. He'd already seen his share of skeletons in this cave, and seeing several more wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary. He was a bit wary of the hand that was outstretched to him. The last time he'd gotten so close to the girl his neck had felt like it was on fire, and being doused with many burning chemicals all at once. However, he didn't have much of a choice. He knew he couldn't walk on water, so perhaps the girl would be dragging him along with her own power. Either way, Ryugi gave his hand to the girl, allowing her to lead him.

Of course, there was no mistaking the familiar feeling of pain that came from touching the girl; or anything that had to do with the Reapers. It was the consequence of proximity, but if he was willing to brave the pain then she would lead him out onto the water.

Beneath them the bones of many were left to this pond as a grave marker. Their heads still adorned with helmets, their bodies wearing rusted armor over time-bleached bones. Some lay beside iron spear heads that had long since lost their bodies to the passage of time, others held swords and shields clutched tenaciously within bony fingers.

"Many, many years ago, when the city of Strata was nothing more than a village built around an oasis in the desert, this mountain was the home of a different kind of menace."

There was a glint of color from the bottom of the pond as they walked over it, like the moonlight reflected off of colored glass that was strewn across the bottom. At the very center of the basin there was another skeleton, one that took up nearly half the pond on its own, but the bones had collapsed under their own weight after the years and what remained hardly resembled the ignoble creature it once had been.

The teeth remained, though. The claws remained. And covered by silt and sediment that had accumulated over five millenia the scales of that red dragon still decorated the cave like seashells on the beach.

Ryugi would fight back the pain, his teeth gritted as his mind did its best to force out the feeling from his perception. It worked with normal pain, but wasn't as successful with this supernatural pain. It still worked, but only to a degree, and still managed to push the limit of Ryugi's tolerance. His voice was strained a bit as he spoke, showing the control he was having to exert over himself.

Those...look like dragon scales. A red from what I can see.

Ryugi wasn't familiar with this creature, that is to say he'd never met it. However, it was clearly a dragon's bones and claws. This dragon would have had to have lived on the mainland 5,000-6,000 years ago, around the time that the Great War had started, and the people of the mainland hunted dragons as enemies.

"Correct, Mr. Kazamaru."

Little D held out her hand over the water and one of the scales bubbled up to the surface; rising up to sit, glistening, in her pale hand.

"This one's name was Burnheart. He was young... much like you. He believed in things such as justice and righteousness. Always striving to do the 'right' thing."

"You know very well what happened after that, don't you Mr. Kazamaru?"

With a flick of the wrist she tossed the scale back into the water, where it slowly disappeared again into the depths of the pool.

"The humans saw him as a threat. He saw the humans as his enemy. So he did what was 'right', and what all good little patriots do when they are at war. One night he went out and burned Strata to the ground."

Ryugi didn't look surprised. He'd never heard this exact story before, but he knew that there were a few dragons that fought on the mainland while the troops fought back home. Most of them were looked at as "irresponsible" or "illogical" due to their actions, as them fighting there would only spur the humans to more anger towards their race. Of course, that didn't stop young dragons like Burnheart from doing what HE thought was right.

If you're trying to show me that "Justice" or what is "Right" to one person might be seen differently by another, I already know that all too well.

Ryugi'd seen his own share of people who thought they were doing the right thing, and had caused alot of needless suffering for many people.
PostPosted: Tue Sep 25, 2007 5:22 pm

"What I am telling you, boy, is that what is just is not always the same as what is necessary."

She looked at him sternly; then turned her attention towards the pool of water beneath them. The surface clouded, swirled, and shone with a luminescent glow... then the clouds cleared as the reflection on the water looked back upon what had happened so many years ago.

The reflection in the water showed Burnheart in his death throws, beating his wings and lashing his tail as he thrashed about the cave with a blade sunk hilt-deep through his heart. Eventually he fell, and for the last time he did not rise again; laying dead upon the floor.

It as then that a silver-haired man in golden armor stepped forward to grasp the weapon's rounded hilt and pull the blade from Burnheart's pierced heart.

"There are always those that believe they walk the path of light and righteousness, Mr. Kazamaru. Many times those are the very same noble hearts that cannot be brought back from the edge of madness."

Ryugi knew this, of course. Ryugi had been lucky in rescuing Ryudo from his own ideas, that hinged on madness. But there were many that crossed over the line and believed that their actions would somehow benefit everyone in the end, and were so clouded by righteousness that these people could not see the horrible truth of their actions. But as Ryugi saw the silver hair, all thought stopped in his brain.

Thats..! Thats Eclipse! Eclipse has been here at this very spot! And that sword...is...

It was Ragnarok.
