The village was small, dead and empty. Most of the houses that could be seen we vacant, dark, dead. The grass grew up unkempt all around and green blades of weeds cut through the cobblestone road. Algren had order his troops to stop in the middle of the tiny village and to rest, most tacking seats upon broken porches. Once Algren's men were seated, he descended from his horse and began walking of towards the edge of the small tony, his cape swaying in the wind. Most of his troops watched him go and once he left, quiet grunts and mummers began to flow.

“Where is he going? Some asked
“I want to get back, I have a family tyo see.” Grumbled others. Most of the conversations followed this pattern. And Gefton heard them all. But he knew the answer to their questions. He knew. The old man called a Sergant over to him and gave a few brief orders and then the old man followed after Algren.

The path Gefton followed was merely trampled grass made by Algren's foot steps. Algren was walking with a limp and the trail was easy to follow. For close to twenty minute Gefton followed this weaving trail through the dead town, the houses looking like skulls, empty eyes blazing at him. So much had happened. Gefton remembered that horrible wave of water striking Algren and his men. Watching as so many died. He had remembered the bodies floating. And then the light. That strange light that had glowed and then how some bodies had come to life once more. Unharmed and in better health than when the war had started. A voice took him out of his thoughts and he stopped.

Before him, upon the crst of a hill. Kneeled Algren, his tattered cloak billowing in the wind as the aehvens darkened with a storm to the west. The grass waved back and forth in a giddy dance. Gefton heard sobbing as Algren's head shook and the Gefton heard Algren's voice again.

“Hey, Kathrin.” Whispered Algren to the stone marker that lay before him. “I'm sorry I don't visit here as often anymore but I have a good reason.” A sad smile crossed Algren's lips “I'm a Dragon Slayer now. That's right. I made it a couple of years ago. Its certainly kept me busy.” Algren clentched his fist and his voice began shacking “I'm strong now, strong enough to bring peace to the Empire. Just like you wanted. Just like you wanted...” Algren began trailing off as tears began to roll out of his eyes as he began to sob. “I'm know I've said it before but I'm sorry Kathrin...I''m so sorry...I should have been hear for you...I should have...I was a fool. Forgive me please...” Algren felt a hand on his shoulder and heard Gefton speak.

“It was not your fault Algren. Your sister's death was no fault of your own. She was such a kind soul but stubborn, just like her borther.” Algren chuckled slightly at that, though tears still ran down his face. “Listen Algren, your sister came to this colony to help heal the sick. She was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“It doesn't matter!” Growled Algren “I should have been here, to protect her! She was my little sister!” Gefton heaved a sigh and pulled his hand away.

“Algren, what is done is done. The past never changes. However, the future is still unwritten. remember the past my friend, but don't dwell in it, other wise you will never leave it. Honor your sister by bringing peace back to these lands. She loved you Algren and wouldn't blame you.”

Algren swollowed and nodded and after a moment rose, though Gefton had to aid him up. The two looked around for a moment and then began to return to the rest of the Dragon Slayers.
-----
From an empty house far away, a figure watched all this with a smirk on his lips. The facial gesture was cruel and sadistic, much like the mind that controled the body. For a moment more the figure watched through glinting eyes and in the next he was gone.

Blaise nodded to Chrono in uderstanding. Something terrible had happened. Blaise could see it in Rosette's eyes. Something had hurt her, or them, terribly, and she feared it. She couldn't blame her for not wanting to go back if that place held horrific memories. Then a thought struck her.

"Chrono . . ." She said quietly, bending over to him so Rosette wouldn't hear, "You said you assembled a force to fight demons. Is there any of them that could help us? I understand that you must have lost quite a few of them . . . but are there any left? Chrono, we need all the help we can get."

Booker nodded avidly to Azmaria, "Yes, thank you."

"Im not sure how many were left... If any..." Chrono said glumly, "If there any alive other than us, I don't know where they would be. If they was alive..."

Chrono looked even more glum now, speaking of it hurt him deeply.

"The members of the Black Order could have spread all over the country by now, or died of other means."

"I'm glad." Azmaria told him,"It's never good to fear something as wondefful as flying. I'm gla I could help."

Blaise frowned, seeing how it hurt him. She felt like she had re-opened a healing wound of theirs, but the more information she could get, the more she might be able to piece things together. "Chrono . . . what happened? If you don't want to tell me, that's fine, but I'd like to know."

"Yes, thanks very much." Booker smiled, blushing slightly, "So do you know exactly where we're going?" he then asked, unable to hear the talk going on below. It was a peaceful night and he felt at ease in Azmaria's arms.

Loque looked to Kaden in curiosity then asked him, "The Lieutenant . . . how old is she?"

"Nearly sixteen." he replied, "Why?"

Loque nodded a bit, "She's very young for such a high rank."

"She works harder at what she does than anyone I know. I'm sure diligence gets you places. It certainly got her somewhere."

"We created an force to fight against the demons. For a long time they have been seceretive, their actions camoflauged by the words around them. They can take a form similiar to a human, or other races, so the thought of them being a demon was never brought up. But... I knew, Rosette knew. There was a surprising amount of people who did know. We were careful to bring them together. We were even able to find a secluded place. We weren't that different from the foresters. We'd leave in teams of three, and investigate different areas for demons. But... we weren't as well protected as I would have liked. We couldn't completely seal the place off of demons... because of me... Rosette, Azmaria, Satella, and myself were sent off when we heard of a particular demon in an area, but there was nothing. When we returned... we found a slughter. They killed them and... did things to them... Organs were removed, weapons were taken. Many of them were tied with chains in a kind of gruesome, upside down cross... We were fools to think that we could hide forever and destroy them all without consequences. I-!"

Rosette gave a loud yell as she slapped him across the face. Calling them fools was the last straw.

"Don't you DARE insult their memory Chrono! NEVER!"

"I think we're going back to the Black Order..."

Blaise jumped as Rosette hit Chrono. The story was deeply troubling and made her think, if such a large group of people . . . perished in such a terrible way, than what chance have we, eight people, got against them? Pushing those thought's from her mind she looked to Rosette with a strange expression on her face. Even she couldn't be sure what the look said, but she now felt great remorse for having to ask.

Holding her hand out to Rosette, she let it hover over her shoulder, unsure if she should even touch her.

"Rosette? . . . I --"

Chrono touched his cheek gingerly, He couldn't remember a strike from Rosette hurting quit so much. She'd given him noogies, jumped on his back, she wasn't the gentlest, but this hurt so much more...

"WHAT?!" Rosette snarled at Blaise,"What do you want to stick your nose in now?! Go ahead Blaise! Go on! I guess I can't hide it anymore!" She added sarcastically,"So much for honoring their memories and all. Want to do dig up some of their graves while we're at it?!"
PostPosted: Thu Aug 02, 2007 12:50 pm

Blaise quickly withdrew her hand, clenching it into a fist and avoiding everyone's gaze. Rosette's words hit her hard, leaving an unbearable stinging feeling. She really hadn't meant anything, she would never mean to hurt Rosette. And Rosette knew that. All she needed was to understand why . . . why was she upset, why did they all have to hide, why were they being hunted? It seemed like the only thing she ever asked anymore was why.

Blaise didn't want to be there anymore, she could feel anger welling up inside her. She was too close to people, feeling constricted, she could snap on anyone. She didn't want to do that. If she stayed, then all she was feeling, anger- remorse - dissapointment, would eventually come out in a way she didn't want.

Keeping her balance, Blaise stood. She was only able to do this because of their slower speed. With one last look of resentment towards Rosette, she aimed for an upcoming branch and grabbed onto it, her feet leaving the strange flying creature. The contact hurt a little but it wasn't anything she'd not felt before.

"Blaise, no!" Kaden shouted, seeing her dangling from the branch as they kept going. "Satella, we have to land! We have to get her!"

Climbing down, Blaise turned the opposite way, and began walking slowly, her thoughts in an angry twist.

"There's not enough room! "Satela told them, "Jump or we'll have to drop from here! I'll try and land close!"

"Oh!" Azmaria gasped, stopping in midair,"Blaise! She fell! Hang on!"

Being so much smaller, Azmaria and Booker were able to immediately land after Blaise. Az was a bit rougher on the landing with Booker than she had intended.

"Blaise! Oh, thank goodness you're alright! I thought you'd fallen off!" Azmaria called. Her wings vanished as they hit the ground.

The Imperial throne Room was dark and still, the high chair sitting alone in the circular room. The room was massive, the floor covered in polished onyx, the high windows above dancing in dull colors to the light of the full moon. No torches burned, the room was silent and still, with two guards walking the giants circle, their dark eyes hidden by steel helmets. Quiet ruled when the emperor was in his chambers. A silent holder to the most powerful man's chair. A silence banish when a loud groan was heard and the mighty doos to the royal chamber open with a thundering crash and in storm d a man.

The man was tall, though thin and haggard. A long white beard fell from his chin all the way to the floor and his head was bald. He moved swiftly towards his high throne, his yellow and black robe cutting into the dark night as his twelve royal Guards followed after him, each taking their place around the mighty circle. The Emperor seated himself as the doors were closed and for a long time, no sound was heard. Silence came once more. And then the doors flung opened wide and there, silhouetted by the tourchs behind him stood a tall thin figure, whose white hair waved slightly.

The Emperor rose, a mixture of relief and annoyance crossing his wrinkled face.
“Asmudius.” Came the Emperor's booming voice. “I'm glad to see you. But where is Algren? ” Asmudius rose his head and stared into the Emperor's. The white haired figure of Asmudius marched into the room, paused halfway towards his destination, freed his sword and kneeed to the Emperor.

“Father.” Came the voice of Asmudius. But it was could and no other words followed and soon the Emperor spoke again.

“Come my son, what news of my heir? Speak! What message does he bring.” Asmudius smiled darkly, his face hidden by his long hair. A whisper began to fill the room. It was a small, trickling voice, but it was everywhere and the air grew deathly cold. The Emperor narrowed his eyes and then fear gripped him as he realized what the words were.

“Guards, Seize him! Seize him!” But the guards did not move. They stood frozen as the whispering went on. Language filled the air now as Asmudius rose up, his face still hidden by his long hair.

“They listen only to me now. At least their bodies do.” A cackle “But I'm afraid their hearts are still loyal to you. And that won't do. I can't have puppets with hearts loyal to another. Tsk, tsk. So then...” The body of Asmudius spun around, the arms outstretched as he shouted in giddy mirth.

“Royal Guards of the king, tear out your hearts and through them at the feet of the Emperor!” For a moment, stillness ensued. Nothing moved, nothing breathed. Not Until the first Shriek ripped through the air. A guard stood rigid, gasping, blood oozing out of his mouth as he stared at his heart, still pumping in his hands, the blood still rushing from the hole he had made. Fractured bone fell on the floor and the gurad threw the heart before he collapsed to the floor. This grisly scene was repeated over and over till ever guard had done so, blood pooling upon the floor and running in nightmare patterns as the white haired figure cackled madly.

The Emperor watched all this and then raised both his arms and shouted a word of power. Instantly the air began to shimmer and writhe as balls of fire began to rain from the Emperors outstreched palms and struck the white haired man. Blast after blast struck but to no avail, the white haired man still danced madly, the fire burning away his cloths to reveal flesh covered in dark symbols that moved and swam on the flesh. The Emperor concentrated harder but to now avail. On went the dancer through the bloody room and then suddenly the dancer stopped, looked through the walls of fire at the emperor and then in the next instant, the Emperor was upon his knees, the cutlass of the white haired man to his throat.

The Empeor growled and cursed “What are you doing my son?” The white haird figure finally flung the white hair away from his eyes and looked at the Emperor. The Emperor saw no white, no color in the sockets, only two black, burning wholes. The mouth of Asmudius spoke but it was not Asmudius' voice that came out. It was the voice of an old man, sinister and hoarse.

“Why I'm allowing Algren to succeed you father!” But the Empeor wasn't listening. He was rembering who those eyes belonged to. Who had spoken like that a thousand years ago when he, the Emperor had taken the throne.

“Melecus...” whispered the Emperor in stunned silence. Asmudius cackled.

“I see you remember me. And because you do...”The lips of Asmudius parted into a sick smile, the teeth in the mouth long and sharp. “You know what is coming to the Empire. What's coming to this entire world!”

The Emperor never felt the blade cut through his thoat, never felt as the warm blood spilled all over the throne, never felt his head leave his body. Asmudius turned and looked up at the roof high above. He could hear the sounds of soldiers heading this way. It was time for him to leave. And in a cloud of smoke, leave he did.

Bane sat down at one of several cushioned chairs, a small smile on his face. Yes, things were working well now. She had done well, ALL of them were doing very well right now.

Loud banging on Bane's door throe him from this thoughts. He gestured for Anna and Fiore to stay back and closer to Jacob on the other side of his tall bed, before going to the door himself.

"What is it?"

Viede, tall and imposing as he was, looked concerned as he stood before the doorway, several guards standing behind him.

"Sir, I have just been informed that the Emperor has been beheaded by an unknown assailant."

"I see..." Bane said with a long pause, he spoke now to the guards around Viede.

"I want added security around my own quarters here! Inform those needed immediately! Spread into the rest of the city if you must, I want this murderer found!" He ordered. Bane knew to play his part well.

Booker was jostled slightly as he and Azmaria landed. Tripping forward he managed to regain his balance and composure. Looking to Blaise curiously he watched as she continued to walk without looking back.

"No, I didn't fall." Blaise said coldly, "I jumped."

Booker didn't understand what was happening, "Permission to speak, Lieutenant?"

"Permission denied." she hissed back.

Annalise did as she was told and cowered slightly near Jacob and Fiore as she watched and listened to the men at the open door. The situation was grave.

"Do you bequest assistance, sir?" she asked meekly.

"Then answer me! What happened?" Azmaria asked, she looked a bit frightened,"Is it about where we're going! You mustn't let it get to you!"

Azmaria and Booker had little idea of what had conspired on the back of Satella's beast, but it was evident that Azmaria knew more about their destination than Blaise had previous been aware of.

~*~

"None at all for the moment, Anna. As you are aware, there is a very dangerous man around here. Stay in here with Fiore and Jacob, they will watch over you for now, I have business I must attend to..." Bane replied before leaving the room.

"It is alright, The master will take good care of us. We are valuable." Fiore said softly to Anna.

Booker dawdled behind Azmaria, not really having the ability to say anything because he was denied permission.

"Yes, that's part of the reason." Blaise said clearly, still walking at a brisk pace without facing them or turning her head to look. "The second half of it is the fact that Rosette is so keen on locking people out of her past. She reprimands me for prying when she's left me in the dark and it's not right. It's like she's got me on a leash and if I wander too far she'll yank back on the chain. I'm not going to continue following around like her loyal hound with some tidbit of information to keep me happy. I'm not one to be kept stupid, Azmaria, and Rosette should have understood that by now."

~ * ~

Anna stepped back with a nod and sat next to Fiore, hugging her knees tightly. She couldn't help but be frightened after what people had done to her in the past. She was afraid they were coming back for her because she was different.

Azmaria looked at her angrily suddenly, before shouting:

"Did you ever stop and consider WHY she doesnt say such things! No you are acting the child by walking away! Aren't you going to go forward and see the journey through! I don't believe you!"

Azmaria coughed a little into her hand before yelling more.

"The Black Order was special to Rosette! She spent ages putting it together! You think she'd be so open to admit such a thing to you when they were all slaughtered?! She's hurt! That event has left deeper scars than you know! You are no dog on a leash, if she didn't love you so much she'd deny it all and never entertain the idea!"

~*~

Jacob reached out and pulled on Anna's shoulder so she was sitting beside him. Even with his alarming and sickly appearance, he still looked at her with kind eyes.

"Don't worry, Anna, you are safe here. And fear not, it will all turn out alright. There are people who have my sister too, and I mean to get her back... We will both get them back."
