Marcus seemed to realize the tension was there, as prominent as ever, and he let go of Terryn. "I'm beginning to think that something's wrong." He swallowed.

Terryn sighed, nodding in agreement as she lookd away from him again. "As am I. Forgive me, it is entirely my fault."

"What is your fault?" he asked exhasperatedly, moving his head in futile attempts to make eye contact with Terryn. "What is wrong? I do not understand."

"You know why." Terryn shook her head and walked past him back inside, holding tightly onto the hilt of her rapier as though for dear life.

Marcus lunged after her and caught her elbow, holding on firmly. "No, I really don't. Is it so terrible that you cannot bring yourself to say?" he asked. Well, alright. He had a horrible suspicion that he did, in fact, know why, but he prayed that it wasn't the truth.

Terryn turned on him, an expression on her face that betrayed a mix of anger and confusion. She shook her arm from his grasp and looked away, as if embarassed, as she continued to walk.

Marcus walked alongside her, but he didn't touch her. He did, however, keep trying to make eye contact, as though that would will her to confess. "I hate this, Terryn. This idiotic unease. Lord! Just tell me, and it will be done with."

Terryn glared at him, stopping for only a moment. "You wish to know? Honestly? Well, Marcus, conquerer of women, I hate you. And would you like to know why?" She looked almost as if she was about to cry, but made sure to keep her composure. "Because I think I am in love with you, alright? Despite all of our mockings, all of our reassurances that love was naught but a subject to paint or write about, I think I love you, just like any of your stupid, flouncing little courtiers. And it is absolutely infuriating!" She unclasped the belt that held the rapier and shoved it all into his arms for fear she would want to draw her blade on him. Shaking her head, she stalked off, not allowing him to see her tears.

Oh. It was worse that he had feared. It was worse that he might have been able to fear, even. He had stood there, mouth wide open, eyes even wider open. And now, he still stood there, paralyzed, the rapier dumbly in his hand. It was just as well that he stayed silent. For what seemed like the first time in a lifetime, Marcus was completely, and utterly, at a loss for words.

In her utter rage and confusion, Terryn hadn't even hear the thunder or noticed the clouds that had rolled in. It was only when the sky lit up and she felt the first few drops on her head and shoulders that she realized it was raining. She paused, looking up at the sky blankly as the water soaked her hair and clothes.

Marcus sighed, watching Terryn with an almost defeated gaze. Wordlessly (because he still wasn't quite ready to say anything), he took Terryn by the shoulders and led her inside, trying to get his brain to fuction again. It seemed like a hopeless case.

Terryn kept looking up at the sky, not acknowledging the fact that Marcus had led her inside. When she finally stepped onto the stone floor of the manor, she took a deep breath and dropped her gaze to the ground, where a small puddle was forming at her feet.

Marcus had to swallow a number of times before he could make himself speak. And when he did, his voice was shaking. "You--you are mistaken. Because you are new to these feelings, and because I like you very, very much, I forgive you. But...please, don't--well, sort it out." His voice had an almost desperate sound to it, and his face was positively pained.

Terryn shook her head slowly, dropping down into a nearby armchair and getting it soaked as she stared into her lap. She wrung out her skirt, letting the water drip onto the floor as she tried to gain control of herself again.

Marcus waited patiently for Terryn to say something. Something unidentifiable was stubbornly lodged in his throat. He wanted to wail something, anything, about how he had thought Terryn had more sense than this. But he couldn't, and so he waited, taking a seat next to Terryn.
