The more River thought about it, the more she wanted to go on that trip, too. She'd heard a lot of stories about her great-uncle's homeland, and she wanted to see it. She was sure that her mother would want to as well, considering Alyse's thirst for knowledge.
"Maybe they'll take our whole family with them," she hoped sincerely.

"You could ask, I want to see the ocean," Naida admitted.
She had read books where mers came from oceans and really it made sense to her. There was far more room in an ocean than say a river or even a lake.

"You would come with us?" River beamed. "That would be fun! Then we could swim together, too!"
She grinned at Miyuki. "The three of us would have all kinds of fun together!"
She wondered if Amalirahc would come with them as well, or if he would still be roaming the Four Lands with his parents then.

"If it was sailing certainly but I'm not sure about your trip," Naida replied sheepishly, "You're going to be heading into the desert eventually. Deserts and mers don't mix."
"Didn't you go to the Eastland once?" Miyuki had heard about that from her mommy.
"But I used the portals! That's different, I can't travel through a desert, it would be so dry."

River's eyes grerw wide. "You were in the Eastland?" she asked, amazed. "How did you end up there? How long were you there? What did you do there?"
She had thought Naida hadn't been anywhere but the Borderlands in their world!

"I used a portal," Naida grinned, "Besides the one that leads to the Borderlands there are two others. One leads to the Southland because that's where Auntie Elnara comes from and Auntie Lin always uses it, and the one leads to the Eastland because Lothiriel and Estel have known the family for a long time and in case Auntie Lin wanted to visit."
She knew of Sir Elros though she hadn't caught a glimpse of him yesterday.

River pouted, the archery tournament temporarily forgotten. "You only answered one of my questions," she told Naida in an accusatory voice. "That's not fair!"
She wanted the whole story, not just the how she got there!

Naida giggled and hugged River again, she was so cute when she pouted!
"Jair and I wanted to go to the Borderlands to play but we ended up in the Eastland, but it's okay we got to play tag while we were there. Even Iris did, even if she was a bit edgy at first. Sir Elros watched us too!"

River's eyes grew wide. "Even Lord Elros?" she gasped. "That must have been a long time ago, because he's been gone for many years! I think even longer than I've been alive!"
Well, she really didn't know, because before he'd gone to Amon Darthir he had been in the Eastland. She had only met him two weeks previous.

Naida thought about it, "I don't know.... I think he was in the Eastland when you were born, I'm pretty sure anyways."
She had to really think about that one.
"Of course, all the time differences makes it a bit weird."
She knew this because while she was really good friends with River, she had been around before Alyse even married.

"Yes, that time difference does make things harder," River agreed. "Mama told me about it. It's weird, but I guess it makes sense. She and Shiro both tried to explain to me why it might be that the time in the worlds doesn't go the same fast, and I think it makes a bit of sense."
Some parts of it, at least.

"I still don't get it," Miyuki shook her head.
It was just so hard to imagine, two worlds going at different times and yet you wouldn't notice it if you had one foot through the portal. It made Miyuki's head spin.
"Give it time, I didn't get it at first neither," Naida admitted with a grin.

"It made my head hurt when Shiro was talking about it," River shrugged, "so it's not surprising. I still don't understand all of it, but it was very ..."
She pursed her lips thoughtfully. What was the word that he had used?
"Scientific."
She paused again, then shrugged her shoulders once more. "Whatever that means."

"Can't help you there," Naida grinned, "Let us just enjoy the fact it allows us to be together."
Honestly there was no way to explain science, there were times she thought science and magic were their own little worlds even though at times even magic had an explanation.
