Gardens of the moon
its a wonderful if you are a fan of war type books
That go back to Medieval type period with magic

I was actually the story behing the deity, Vecna, that lead me to Liches and thus Necromancy in my interests.
It really fits into some of my roleplay personalities...
the Wizard prodigy that has a passion for knowledge and remains dissatisfied with the regular pools of knowledge and so dives into forbidden arcane studies and consumed by the Dark Arts.
He then bargains his soul, and so on...
He's usually mentored by an even more powerful Lich, operating at a more liesurely and calculating pace.
