I was just thinking, we could use people in jail (lifers and convicts on death row) for their organs and blood. They're not doing anything, so why not take their bonemarrow, a few kidneys, and maybe a heart here and there?

I feel obligated to post this link, because what you're suggesting is eerily close, and gives me the heebyjeebies. http://oopswrongcookie.blogspot.com/2008/01/unwind-by-neil-shusterman_16.html

I'd say only for those who are definitely up for execution. Take them out in a way which won't damage their organs, remove, distribute. As for everyone else being useful, prisons could instead be made into labor camps, so instead of sucking up taxes they're actually producing and contributing.

They're not doing anything, so why not take their bonemarrow, a few kidneys, and maybe a heart here and there? Ethics and Lethal Injection. First; it's unethical to "steal" organs, which is what you'd be doing there as the convict would not consent to donating organs. Second; lethal injection in the most common form of execution these days. And who wants a heart laced with poison?

I feel that convicts give up their rights after they've commited crimes that are worthy of life/death sentences. You're not rehabilitating if the person is never going to be free again.
And in the case of organ donors, the harvesters rarely wait for a patient to die, rather they swoop in and take the heart while the patient is still alive. Makes sure the heart is fresh. Death by heart removal under anaethesia.

But you'd still have to screen the inmates for drug abuse, past health probs etc. I don't think there are that many healthy organs in life sentence/death row convicts

I say we let the damn convicts have their drugs. It'd be an easy way to get all drug addicts into jail, because they'd want to go there. And if they OD, even better.
