Maji smirked a bit, having heard nothing of the mention of him being "royalty". What an absurd thought, why anyone in their right or wrong mind would look to this small, lean, pastless cub as anything moe than what he simply was simply baffled him. He took a deep breath, standing himself up again as another lioness trailed in after the first. He shook his head a bit with a croocked smile that sudgested that he might have know that he'd be stalked as he had been. "Worrysome girls." He chuckled, turning back to them both, "I'm fine... again I'm sorry for my behavior.... I'm just not used to be treated so differently and formally. I'm older, yes, but I'm still the same cub that I've always been, and no matter how much more hair comes to my head that won't change." He looked between them both- two of the older friends he had aside from the queen, "Perhaps I should go apologize to the others as well?"

He felt that it would be best if he did... on top of that he had quite a lot of fishing to do if he was going to feed all these likely hungry lionesses. He had only started prepairing three for himself and hadn't planned on so many coming. Many of these creatures he had thought might have been lost to him in the plegue. He still had to prepare a prayer for the other male - the only other male he'd met aside from himself and perhaps the hoofed ones in these entire lands. A friend of the queen, she had asked him to do such a favor for him. He'd also have to begin growing more herbs to cook with, make a larger storeage pond for when the dry season came... gods there was so much work to be done. He reached up with a paw, running his claws though the longer mane that begun running down to his shoulders, "And I owe you ladies all a dinner."

Layla rose to her paws, and slinked around him, the slightest smile on her face, happy that her answer seemed to have pleased him. When she came to his side she nodded solemnly, all remnants of the smile wiped clean from her features. Her claws were extended in preparation for the jump she was about to make as she swept past Maji, her curled tight around her leg, and approached the ledge, peering down.

"Montsho and I will bring you as large a kill as we can...a-a gift in turn for my unanticipated arrival," She tried to hide the excitement that came to her features at the thought of a large scale hunt. As she'd spoken she'd analyzed the ledges to calculate where she should jump.

She leapt gracefully from the ledge, turned off an outstretched rock, using her claws to keep footing, and landed back amoung the others below. As she landed, one of her paws slipped on the awkward surface and she fell forward on her chest before springing back to her paws as she began a dash out of the cave and toward her tree home.

((I'll pop back in later and put the hunt in their journal))

He opened his mouth to protest but she was gone. If it was possible Maji looked a bit more pale. Hunt? Large game? Lords some of those "game" were his closest friends. He would never, had never, and could hardly think to even thing about eating red meat. Fish was all he had ever eaten in his life as far as meat went and he was quite happy with that. He looked to the other lioness, hoping that she didn't note his discomfort. What manner of lion wouldn't hunt the hoofed ones or would turn down a free meal to a large beast like that? Only recently did Maji discover that most lions did just that, they ate antelope, zebra, and waterbuffelo. He felt ill, picturing the three of his friends- each of the said races -happily laughing and fooling around near the river only to be met with a black blur of fangs and claws. "Gods...", what could he do but hope she wouldn't find them. They were fast- and the three of them made an odd but defensible group.

Taking a deep breath he moved from the cave as well, slowly making his way down the large leap by carefully leaping from one wall to the other. He knew the other lioness would probibly follow him and at the moment he didn't feel much like talking. There was just so much to digest at the moment - no pun intended - that he could hardly feel like holding a conversation and pretending that he was perfectally alright.

Maji had slipped passed her, turning away from the gray lioness, she followed after the male lion. He seemed a bit distraught in his demeanor and she was wondering if she had come at the wrong time. Following his trail, she noticed that his paws where heading to towards the river. Picking up her pace she trailed a bit more closely, wondering what a lion would be doing going to the river.

Jendayi padded after Maji. Her wet feet were now an ashy gray, overlapped with the white soft-sand. She felt sticky and irritable at Maji's unwillingness to talk much. "Maji." she managed to call out to him before giving a quick leap from the ledge and running after him, "I caught two fish, you speak of dinner and wished for you to know. They are by... the female, by the fire." She ran a bit faster now, her shoulder blades a little above his. She pressed her muzzle close to his ear, eyes darting, "You never did answer my question." Her grey coat was speckled with the black water her running had kicked up and her tail was hovering just inches from the ground, "Who... who is that female you were talking with. The one with a light coat and eyes of olive colour?"

She took her face away from Maji's ear, looking at him as the pair ran. Behind her were a few more females. What was this, his entourage? She gave a slight shake of her head and wondered how Maji was taking this.

Annoyance flitted across Kali's features. Something about the white and gray female pricked her as she leaned over to whisper in Maji's ear. The shake of her head only annoyed her more, her muscles contracting underneath her fur to contain her disagreement. She knew this was none of her business, but she thought if she was going to be Maji's neighbor, she aught to know him a bit more. And for that matter everyone else: on good terms. Determined to keep her attitude under wraps, she trotted along sedately after the group keeping her eyes focused on the texture of the ground so she wouldn't find herself staring down the female.

Jendayi turned her head, unable to wait for Maji's reponse. She slowed her pace to trot alongside Kali's side. She wanted to be able to talk to Maji later, though. When his reponse wouldn't be so brief. jendayi felt her necklace lightly hitting against her chest, an image of her leopard friend came into mind, but she quickly forgot it, not knowing his feelings about her, and rather not wanting to. She came just close enough to this new female to smell her scent, and she put it into memory. The lioness was interested in all the females now following Maji and turned to this one now, with a kind smile and soft voice, "Excuse my intrusion, I am Jendayi. I was pondering who you might be."

((bleh. She's not very good at introducing herself))

(( xd I think I'm rambeling half the time lol))
He had bowed respectfully to the queen and the others before he had left the cave, easily picking his way down the all too firmilar rocks covered in moss and dew from the nearby waterfall. The thick mists swirled around his body as he landed at the base of the rock's face, turning his head up to peer through the fog of the waterfall's spray. There was no chance in stopping the black lioness. How would he explain himself anyway? It was wrong to eat meat? But he ate fish... well it was wrong to eat meat from inteligent creatures, then again he'd never spoken to a fish, they might be the most intelegent creatures on the face of the planet as far as he knew. Lords it was complicated. The others would surely laugh to find that their "king" -or so he was beginning to think they saw him as- was friends to zebra, gazelle, and water bison. Taking a deep breath he continued on, pressing his lips together to keep himself from simply roaring in aggrivation. He wasn't a king, he was just a cub- nothing more or less as far as he knew and until he saw it in writing as to otherwise, then that was what he'd always think of himself.

His left ear rotated back as the sound of more claws on rocks sounded behind him followed by another set. Two had followed him, another sigh and he simply continued on, his tail flicking as he moved from the mist of the waterfall. Soon one of them came dangerously close to him, even going so far as leaning into his ear and whispering. The voice was that of Jendayi - and needless to say he had never come that physically close to any other lion in his life. Jumping back he let out a soft cry, whipping around to face her. Obviously he had been lost in his thoughts and among the last things he was expecting to happen was for someone to come so close to him. It was unerving to say the least. He prayed that the gods would do something to soothe his wracked nerves, all this was too much for him to handle all at once. Perhaps bit by bit he'd have tolerated it all much better with his usual graceful ease, but all at once it was nearly enough to kill him.

Taking a deep breath to regain his composure and return any emotion under the pleasent mask of tranquility he answered the lioness, all hint of his thoughts had died in the presence of his always calm and soft voice, "That was the queen, Jendayi.... the one that you didn't trust was still alive. She's returned here and named me her knight- as I had said before." He rolled his shoulders, "Knight... not king. I don't want you thinking that of me either, please..." his tone was pleading rather than nagging, the only lion he felt deserved scoldings was himself. His eyes then moved to the other female nearby, "...Can I help you?" He didn't know what else to say, she seemed angry, almost annoyed. Rains and river it was just a splended day for everyone it seemed.

Jendayi whipped her head away from the other female, a little troubled at Maji's nervous ebergy. She gave a soothing, inward, purr to herself. To keep a clear head. She heard his response and bowed her head as much as she could in her fast lope. That was all she could do.

"King, you? Surely not. You have almost no respect for yourself Maji. Yes, you are respectful to the Gods and even this new queen, well...old queen. But no, you do not beleive in yourself nearly enough, my dear. Maybe if the queen were dead there would be no other choice to put you on the throne, and I'm sure then you would do a splendid job. But no, I'm assured by your respect for her. She will be a good queen, as she has been, and will hopefully take what little survibors there are and lift them above this horrible state they are in. Unite them, really." she gave a heavy breathe. Not a sigh, just a heavy breathe to signify her deep thoughts on her own heritage. She did not kow where she belonged in all this.

His ears lowered as he listened to Jendayi speak, no respect for himself? Hardly, he just thought it horribly, terribly undecent for anyone to proclaim him as something that he obviously was not. The decision on who would be the king was up to the queen and no one else. She had traveled with another male and that little male might have been her choise, not him. She called him her knight, nothing more or less. It was hard to hide his dissapointment but he would say no more on the matter. Turning he made his way in the direction of the river, his ears lowered and his tail hardly lifted up off the ground. Perhaps he shouldn't speak around the others, surely they weren't too pleased with his display and "self pity". Hardly self pity, he reminded himself firmly, None of this is firmilar to me. All of it's so strange, I never thought I'd see another lion so long as I lived, remember there was a time when I thought that I very well could have been the last. Now that I've met them they seem desperate. They want a leader and apparently the lions on the outside think that the males are the ones that lead. He sighed, thinking back to the records and stories upon the walls of the maze-like caves of his home. There were a few good kings mentioned, one glorified over the others, but in all the records it was the queens that were lifted up above the others. Stories of lionesses that created the written language, that were the ones to know how to work with plants rather than just meat to the pride's bennefit, it was the goddess who controlled the river and a god who controlled the rain afterall. They were mates, lovers who in their paws could easily take the most precious gift to mortals - water - from them.

He lifted his ears up slightly at the sound of three firmilar voices. A zebra laid under the shade of a tree, picking at the grass dully that grew up around the base. A waterbuffilo stood in the river, his great head lowered to drink at the water as the dark mane from his neck and chin trailed along the surface of the water, and a gazelle hummed not too far off, turning his head and ears this way and that. Always keeping watch that one. They were alive at least, his old friends. Surely the others would consider them mere meals, the very thought sent a shudder down his back. Averting his thoughts again, Maji moved to the river, still a distance from his three odd friends, to what looked like a circle of rocks in the river. His little reserve pond. There were only three in there but with so many mouths to feed it was all he could do really.

Jendayi noticed the coldness and the flakes of hostility that were splattered across the female's actions."It is a beautiful place, is it not? I too hae just found my way here," she paused, engrossed in the lie, "...by chance. I love it. Maji has offered for me to take up residence, but I doubt he's still up for the offer." She laughed towards him and gave his haunch a jeering but with her shoulder blade. "Now that he's gotten to know me that is!" She took his silence in and decided to make talk with the female that hated her again.

But, she found nothing to say to her. She was too preoccupied with Maji's silence and her own feet. She gave a slight intake of breathe as she -almost- got her foot stuck in a particularly narrow crevice. She heard the female beside her fumble much more than she had, which pushed her all the more to place her feet perfectly.

When they were done she knew exactly where they were headed. The river's soft sound eased her as she wondered about the female beside her, the queen just a hundred yards from her, and Maji, just a few paces ahead. She was so enwrapped in her thoughts that she barely noticed the trio. Maji! she almost whispered, but bit her tongue. He was reacting to it as f normal. "Maji?" she said, this time questioning. But she was curious as to why he was not attacking, and she followed his lead.

She broke from him to trot near the gazelle. She had always admired the creatures, swift and powerful. She hadn't had real meat in a long time, though. She eyed him warily then asked, in an apprehensive and bewildered tone, "Can... can I talk to you?" The thought had crossed her mind even after she asked it, and she saw how naive of a question it was.

The gazelle turned his head sharply in the direction of the approaching lion, his ears and brow raising up a bit in suprise. Last he saw their passive lion friend he'd been just a cub with a pach of silvery mane, now he was much larger with a good deal more hair trailing down his neck and even into his shoulders, "Knock me over and skin me for a drum, lookit whose standing taller then the grass finally!" The two other animals turned, showing equal suprise at the sight of their friend. The gazelle flicked his tail upwards and began over towards the cub but came to a sharp stop at the approach of two females, two very large females, two very large, very much unfirmilar females. The other two seemed to have taken notice of them a bit sooner than the gazelle had and began to back away slowly.

Maji smiled a bit, releaved to see that the black lioness hadn't harmed his three friends but his expression soon sank as Jendayi called out to him again, her tone was a bit embarassed and shocked. Groaning a bit he turned to watch her, his long tail flicking sharply in annoyance. The lioness herself wasn't annoying, it had been a long day and he just needed to clear his head up a bit before trying to return to the tranquil natured lion that he normally was. She was stunned it seemed, probibly wondering why he hadn't jumped on his old playmates and torn out their throats by now, probibly wondering why three such animals were together and actually getting along, perhaps wondering what the hell a drumb was and why the gazelle had sudjested skinning him for one. Sighing a bit he turned to her, "Yes, Jendayi? What seems to be the problem?"
