About five minutes later Maximos descended. Walter, in his wisdom had packed the Master's bag and handed them to him as soon as he entered the manor.

And so, after a small small stop to change clothes, Maximos made his way off Shadow Island, using jets of black to ease his fall until he landed a few feet from from Ryugi, a black pack on his back and an eager smile on his face.

Alright, where to first Ryugi?
PostPosted: Mon Aug 20, 2007 9:57 pm

Well, first we have to get to my hometown. We can use that area as a staging point to visit all the other areas. I also happen to be friends with the innkeeper.

Ryugi smiled and motioned down the road. He then turned and started to make his way down the path between the trees.

It'll be just a couple hours or so.

Excellent plan!

Maximos said, tugging on both straps of his backpack and adjusting his pants and jacket with a bright smile. It was a beautiful country side, and Maximos needed a good walk to work off that lunch. But, they were headed for Ryugi's home town! His home! That meant....

Do we get to meet your parents?
PostPosted: Tue Aug 21, 2007 8:15 pm

Unfortunately, no. My hometown and parents were destroyed and killed a long time ago when I was still young. What stands there now is a rebuilt town. Looks exactly the same for the most part, except for a memorial fountain in the Town Center.

Ryugi said it without much sadness. It was still there, but his friend would see that Ryugi had mostly come to terms with the cause of the town's destruction, and it didn't bug him that much.

But like I said, you'll get to meet one of my childhood friends. She runs the inn.

Oh...

Maximos said manuevering a hand to scratch the back of his head awkwardly. He wasnt sure exactly how to respond to that. Well, at least not until he saw how at piece Ryugi was with the loss. It was odd, Maximos still held a dark hole somewhere in his heart for his lost family and home....and the world he would likely never see again. Maybe this time with the dragon would teach him how to forget.

I sympathize.

He said, for the first time sounding somber. But in the bright light of day, and with nature swirling all around them it faded.

Well, maybe I can work a few embarrassing stories from her.

He said with a small laugh. As their steps carried them farther, his eyes wandered from their path side to side. He fully expected to see at least one giant drake thundering across the horizon, but alas...he didnt. Though, a few moments later he did turn to Ryugi with curiosity splattered across his features.

What is this place called?

He said, making a looping gesturing with his right index finger at the area immediately around them.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 21, 2007 11:47 pm

Ryugi grinned and kept walking, his arm sweeping across the view before the two travelers.

This whole area is known as the Bounty Plains. You can probably guess why. What you're seeing now is some of the most fertile soil in the world. This area is also Angara's main agricultural center, providing the majority of the Continent's food supply.

Ryugi continued to wander down the path, and coming over a hill, a small town would be visible a few miles in the distance, nestled among several large fields and homes.

And THAT there is Presea, my hometown.

Having more than enough time, and the random desire to do so Maximos reached wandered to the side of the road while they walked tossing out his left arm and running it through the tall grass before swiftly, yet smoothly jerking it back with a barely audible "snap", as he plucked a good length of grass and slipped it through his teeth.

Now normally this would have been with a branch off a nearby tree or a piece of dried, cleaned, driftwood. But that was on the beach, where Maximos was home. Here on the countryside however wasnt very different at all. And with each passing step he felt just that much more comfortable. Granted, the sun was beating the day was bright, but it was nice!

He whistled, as he followed Ryugi's hand out across the distance. There sure was a lot, more than enough to feed a continent this size...well, if they remained in human form at least.

Indeed I can!

He said with a smile. The ground was just bristling with life, he could practically see it through that right eye of his. The "Bounty Plains" he would have to remember this spot. He gnawed on the end of the length of straw as he made his way up the hill, and paused at the top to take in the beautiful view.

Looking at Presea and the surrounding country, Maximos sort of smiled and nodded turning to Ryugi.

It fits you, it really does.

Knowing Ryugi, at least as well as he did this was the sort of place he could see him coming from. A city would be just entirely too dark. He would give a small nod before turning back.

And its very beautiful, you sure it's alright for me there? Should I act more...dragony?
PostPosted: Wed Aug 22, 2007 1:01 am

Ryugi laughed.

Not at all my friend. We might not get outsiders often, but that doesn't mean we're cold to them, just a bit wary. Besides, any friend of mine should be welcome here. Afterall, I did help to save my home from--STOP!!

Ryugi stopped, freezing in place, his voice lowering quite a bit, almost to a whisper...

Quiet... Look there, see that?

Ryugi's right hand lifted from his side and pointed ahead along the path. What Maximos would find if he peered ahead would be...a few vines laying across the path.

Maximos stopped. It was both because of and not because of what Ryugi said, as demonstrated a second afterward when he spoke.

You saved them from...stop? Thats a wierd...oh...

He had to be missing a piece of this story, but noticing the way Ryugi's voice lowered and the small aura of alert that flared about him Maximos silenced, turning his head to follow Ryugi's eyes and admonition.

Vines?

For a moment he was tempted to use it, but remember the pain of the last time he decided against it, instead relying on Ryugi's knowledge instead of his eyes. The vines were alive...but all plants were. Yet Maximos wasnt foolish enough to think his draconic companion stopped him to admire the local flora.

What is it?

He whispered to Ryugi through the side of his mouth.

Ryugi's voice was quiet, somewhat serious, but overall Maximos would be able to tell he wasn't too terrified of whatever it was that he was pointing out.

What you're looking at is a trap set by the Angaran Creep Vine... If you concentrate, you might be able to smell its flower. It uses its beauty and sweet scent to lure its prey in and attack. I suppose you could liken it to a much bigger, meaner venus-fly-trap. It isn't the worst critter we've got here, but out on the plains like this it can catch you off guard...

Ryugi paused for a moment, then got a silly little mischievous grin on his face, and a glint in his red eyes.

Hey... You want to see it?

He leaned his head back just slightly taking a few whiffs of the air. There was infact a fruity, sweet, floral scent wafting by. If blew away Walter's roses and even the scent of whatever that stuff was Mother used to dot on her neck every morning.

Mmmm....its good.

He said while grinning.

Maximos' eyes widened like a child that just got told his new bike was around the corner. New lands, new foods, new people, and new creatures?! He had to remember to plan more trips with Ryugi, this was getting better by the minute!

Ryugi paused for a moment, then got a silly little mischievous grin on his face, and a glint in his red eyes.

He didnt even need to say. He looked back at Ryugi with the same sort of almost evil grin on his features saying more than set of words ever would. Though for good measure he tossed in a small nod. It was a silent sort of way of saying, "Do I ever!".
PostPosted: Wed Aug 22, 2007 1:45 am

Ryugi grinned and stepped forward after a second glance back at his friend that said, "Whatever happens, don't worry." That silly little glint in his eyes was still there as he walked over and picked up one of the vines, which immediately wrapped around his arm, and began to try and pull Ryugi into the bushes as a loud rustling noise came from the tall grass, and a huffing soon followed as more vines slipped around Ryugi's arm. Ryugi was still as confident as ever, and even had a funny little smirk on his face as he looked to his friend.

Heh, watch this...

As another vine wrapped around Ryugi's arm, he suddenly jerked, and a loud growling, screeching, roar came from behind the grass as the full form of the Angaran Creep Vine came barreling through the grass, flattening it as it came. The red "flower" opened to reveal a set of big teeth, until it met the bottom of Ryugi's boot, right to the face, which sent it back among the flattened grass, and gave Maximos a great view of the creature as it dug its "legs" back into the soils and roared once more at Ryugi.

Hey, don't make a fuss at me! You're the one that had your vines on the path.

Ryugi seemed to scold the big creature, which was easily two or three times his height when fully upright. It grumbled in protest and sent several vines shooting towards Ryugi, which were nimbly dodged and smacked aside as Ryugi shot forward towards the body of the big creature. He then reached out and grabbed a few red orbs from the small cavity at the front of the creature before the vines could double back along their path. He stuffed them into his coat, before jumping up and back away from the creature, as more vines came around to try and snare him. But once more, Ryugi snatched them, but instead of yanking, he pulled back and around, swinging the critter about by the vines.

Now you be-HAVE!!

And off the Creep Vine went, grumbling and howling as it sailed into the air and across the plains for about 200 feet, landing with a thump, where angry and frustrated cries came from the beast as it made its way off the beaten path.

And don't let me catch you around here again, you hear!! Shame on you!!

And with that, Ryugi turned, wiped his hands off on one another, and tossed one of the deep red orbs towards Maximos.

There you go! Enjoy!

Ryugi grinned, and then turned to head back down the path as if nothing out of the ordinary had just happened.

Maximos nodded. He trust Ryugi, the man was after all on the second place team in HoH '06 he had best be able to handle himself. In the seconds that followed curiosity abounded, was it a huge dragon sized creature? Maybe it was a nest of conscious vines, or perhaps a...

Maximos' face somewhat contorted in surprise, confusion, and a morbid sort of awe. It looked something like an angry cabbage! Well at least its face did. Granted, the Shadow had faced giant plants in his past but this was...well this was something entirely different, the way it moved its roots like legs was so very odd and yet unique!

It made him think twice about eating a salad, wondering if maybe this was what happened with the salad got angry and fought back. Either way, Ryugi seemed to be giving the salad quite a trouncing! He couldnt help but laugh at the creatures misfortune, as horrible as that sounded.

Nice shot!

He commented as the creature landed a good 200ft away. Ryugi was alot stronger than he gave him credit for, he would have to commit that tidbit to memory.

You show that angry lettuce who's boss!

He said, with a smirk to his companion just before catching the red orb in his right, and holding it up to the sun and examining its every inch as he made a few casual steps back toward Ryugi. Finally, lowering the fruit as he reached the dragon, he had every intention of enjoying it.

Thanks, but...how?

Was it edible, or just pretty? The last thing he wanted to do was bite into a tough orange type rind, and appear rude spitting it out. Still, it looked very tasty.
PostPosted: Wed Aug 22, 2007 12:05 pm

Oh! Dear me... You can eat the whole thing, like an apple of sorts. It has a rind similar to a honeydew melon, but its just as tasty to eat as the rest of the fruit. You can bang it to open it, or just eat your way through.

Ryugi paused, taking one of the red fruits and slammed it onto a rock. The rind cracked, showing a rich purpley-red meat, dotted with tiny black seeds. Oddly enough, as the reddish purple juice from the fruit began to drip from the inside, it turned green! Maximos might have seen many strange things in his life, but this fruit would probably rank among some of the top items. Ryugi took a bite of the rind and fruit itself. The rind was tough, and somewhat crunchy, similar to a watermelon rind, but was rather sweet and tasty. If Maximos were to try some, it would taste very different for his night pears.

The taste was something like a mixture of pineapple, passion fruit, guava, and a bit of the taste of sugar sweetened strawberries. Overall, a very sweet, yet slightly tart fruit. Infact, it tasted a little like the smell of the flower.

These were one of my favorite treats when I was growing up. If you save the seeds, Walter might be able to plant them and grow these delicacies for you. Granted he'll have to raise the Creep Vines well. You wouldn't be able to tell from that one, but they make good pets, and get along well with one another. Raised correctly, they're as gentle as a pussycat.

Ryugi took another bite of the fruit and continued on down the path towards the town.

Ryugi grinned and took another bite.

Oh!

Now if Maximos knew his way around anything, he knew his way around melons. The trick was always getting past the skin. Of course an island boy like him got a good share of lunch cracking open coconuts so he was sort of equipped for the job.

He rolled the fruit in his hands, until its head faced him, the soft part where the main vine feeds the fruit. And then he placed both thumbs that spot and pushed, and pushed, and pushed, until they sunk in. At which point he spread them out, tearing the fruit open. It looked delicious, and it smelled unbearably good. It took nearly all his self control to actually look at the fruit before gobbling it up. Purple...and red? And the skin was eatable!

He lifted it up, like a can to drink in the reddish juice, only to see it turn green, much to his amusement. Of course once he tasted the juice, it was done for. He ate through the rind, the meat, and even the pit, leaving...nothing!

Yes...Walter...

He said, a satisfied yet guilty look on his face along side the incriminating specks of reddish violet.

....maybe later! I think the man needs a pet, he spends a good deal of time talking to the flowers, perhaps having one that can respond will do him good!

But that would have to wait. Right now, he was still lavishing in the afterglow of the succulent flavor still rolling around his tongue.

If this is snack, its a wonder you ever left!

He said, with a bright smile as he pulled a small black cloth from his bag and began wiping his face clean as they walked.
