One by one, the hunters left. Some stopped to taunt the trapped Halloweeners, taking their time to saunter up to the skull where it lay and pocked one of the few pieces that was still intact. Others quietly teleported out without a word.

As soon as the last one disappeared, the barrier slowly unraveled itself. It seemed to sigh as it came apart, melting as frost melts off of a window pane with the morning light on a cold day.

The students were now free, and yet... And yet there was still no exit.

Red's skull rested nearby surrounded by the ashes of her body that Caelius destroyed. The hunters had already pocketed any pieces that weren't ashes; all that remained were large chunks too heavy to move or pick up. If anyone wanted a memento of their teacher, they would have to work for it.

It was fitting, really; Red never made things easy, didn't she...?

The Finale

ALL HUNTERS ARE GONE please proceed to this thread; you have warped out via your pendant.

Quote:

SO YOU WANT A TROPHY?
Red's skull is solid stone. It's not going to be easy to grab a piece. And given that the skull belonged to a 30-foot tall behemoth, it's impossible to move. The skull is large enough that Red could have easily eaten someone in one bite. That's how big we're talking about here.

If you have your heart set on collecting a piece, it looks like you'll need to break a piece off.

To do so:
Quote:

You have your choice of skull, horn, or back plate. The only difference is in the color:
Horns: Black
Skull: Blackish-Grey (not quite black, but light enough to not really be grey either)
Back plate: Whiteish-grey. Not pure white, but certainly lighter than the skull.

You must attack it (Y1s 1d6, Y2s 2d8, Horsemen 2d10). And hit it three times in a row. If you miss, it means you hit it too hard and turned it into ash. Upon missing, the piece you were trying to get has broken off; you must try again from the start.

You have three chances. After that, please cease and let your teacher rest in peace.

HUNTERS: It will be assumed that you grabbed a piece if you wish; no need roll requirement needed. heart

Lattice didn't know Red from any of the professors to be quite honest but that didn't mean she had no reason to feel mournful. The moment the shield faded away she wandered over toward the remains and knelt carefully her hand reaching out to touch against the front of the skull quietly petting at it as if to let it now that the struggle is now over.

"You probably want to go home, too." She murmured softly at the remains quietly uncertain what to do or say. Inky uttered a small questioning meep.

She had not known Red for very long, "We should take you home, but you are far too large for us to carry on our own, I think."

Piece by piece they could take her home, set her pieces on shrines or bury them in some significant way rather than just letting them sit here to be 'forgotten' by time. She couldn't just take a small piece because it would seem that most of them that were loose were perhaps taken by the Hunters as 'trophies'. She wanted a memento something to remind her that this event had indeed happened.

She quietly took a nearby rock, "I do not do this to tarnish your memory. I do this to take you home, please forgive me, Professor."

Shutting her eyes tightly behind her mask she struck the rock down on the area she'd been touching earlier.

The first strike was just to loosen something the second was gently more of a chipping away at the piece that cracked and seemed as if it was going to be loose enough for her to break free.

"I wish there was another way..." She murmured quietly.

Certainly she could just leave it as is but again it seemed...sadder.

The piece came free from the skull and she quietly took it up cradling it gently in the palm of her hands, it was a quiet and reverent moment. If anyone thought less of her for wanting to take Red home, even if it was in pieces, then so be it.

"Thank you, Professor." She murmured quietly as she walked away from the skull with a bit of a sad gait.

Inky for the most part disappeared into Lattice's hair to rest and wait to see what would happen.

Seeing what the ghoul was doing, Aksaja frowned and moved closer to Red's remains once the barrier was down . . . but upon hearing her words, the dragon paused and nodded slightly.

"You're right. We should at least try to take her home," he murmured. Then he raised one claw and also attempted to break off a piece small enough to carry.

He'd chosen a bit of horn to try and take, and after the first hit, it seemed a little looser . . . so he tried again, carefully gauging the force. It wouldn't do to have it crumble.

Whoops . . . almost too hard there, he'd felt how brittle it was. Had to be a little more careful . . . .

And this time, he was rewarded as a largish chunk of black horn broke off in his talons. He quickly curled his 'hand' around it before it could fall to the ground and smiled faintly. "I hope that some of the others do this too. It would be nice to at least take some of her back home with us."

Mitsu had just managed to push a boulder into place when it seemed Red wasn't done. Her head turned up toward the large creature as it spoke. Her words left a bitter taste in Mitsu's mouth. While it was true that normally those of Halloween couldn't die permanently it didn't mean they couldn't. Sometimes...you just didn't come back. Mitsu understood that the Professor was trying to help but she still worried about her friends. It was such a terrible way to go.

Then the creature reared up again and Mitsu could feel the fur between her shoulder blades rise and bristle. She didn't even have time to move, if she had she would have shielded Shun. Thankfully this time the fire that Red rained down on them did not burn them. Instead it created an icy barrier between them and the Hunters. She was...protecting them.

It was almost relieving until Mitsu looked up seeing the last of the light fade from Red, the color around her completely gone. The creature had grown still permanently frozen in place. Her act to protect them....was the last thing she would ever do. "Professor? Professor!"

Mitsu made her way to the barrier with Shun still in tow, her claws scrapping at the dirt but it was really no use. She couldn't get passed the wall to help as the Hunter began to break what was left of Red into pieces. "LEAVE HER ALONE!" Hadn't they done enough? Couldn't they see that there was no more life to be snuffed out from the creature? That thought...left a heavy feeling in Mitsu's chest. Red's or rather the monster's body was still there and yet Red was gone. She had not dissipated into fear. They would never see her again.

It took a while, a long while but the Hunters finally left the area, a few of them venturing toward the barrier before they did. Once they vanished from sight the barrier was gone and the students were free to move. The first thing that Mitsu noticed was everyone moving toward Red and she heard Lattice. Take her home? Yes, perhaps that would be the best. She would obviously not be going on her own.

Mitsu apparently wasn't as gentle with the process in her larger form though. She had gripped a piece in her mouth to pull away but it turned to dust in her mouth. She made a face as she tried to rid the flavor from her mouth. This might not work out very well. She was also tired.

Carefully the lycan wiggled the piece she had grabbed. It hadn't turned to dust instantly like the last.

It was hard to be gentle and yet still be working to break the skull. Mitsu's strength in her natural form played against her once again and the piece in her mouth crumbled to ash. At that point she gave up. She didn't want to keep destroying it so instead she moved away slightly and gave into her tired achy body by slowly lowering herself to the ground to lay.

Her head rested on her paws while she waited for the other students hoping there was an exit or a way out of this room.

It was hard to see anything now, she was sobbing so much. Everything was a blur of color and anguish through her teak soaked eyes, that she almost didn't see the blue barrier that had kept them safe, dissapear.

"W-wait! don't go!" She called out to the retreating ice, the last act of kindness that Red had done for them. But the barrier melted away, and Astra was left there crying her eyes out.

She continued to hold her head in her hands, crying like a lost child, until she looked up again and noticed the massive skull. Rubbing her eyes, she stood up and staggered towards it.

She wanted to bring Red back with her to halloween, but there was no way she could carry the thing back. The only way was to take away a small peice.

Her first attempt was dismal; She tried to use a leaf to sheer away some of it, but she ended up forcing it into the bone to forcefully.

Her next attempt was more successful. She was careful to place the leaf on the edge and was able to cut into the bone some. It was hard work though; her eyes kept tearing up, and every moment she half expected someone to tell her off for what she was doing.

In a moment of unsteadiness, her hand slipped, and the piece fell off to the floor and turned to ash. Astra choked back a sob; couldn't she do anything right?

The barrier disappeared. For a few long moments, Draven stayed where he was. He was trying to remember what he could of their teacher. He'd not known her well, but she'd always been at the school. She'd been here. She'd protected them.

Then he took to the air and silently glided over to the skull with the rest of the students. Gingerly, almost reverently, he landed on top of the stone skull. Thank you, he said to her silently.

"Take her back home" he heard someone say. Yes. That seemed like the right thing to do. The best thing to do. Gently, he began to pry at a bit of the stone with his beak.
