"That was a mental image I didn't need Ulrich," Lin told him dryly.

Mainly because her father was human thank you so much and the mere thought of what her parents do was not what she wanted to think about.

"What?" Ulrich stared at Lin. "They can have ten kids in ten years ... it's amazing their population has stayed as low as it has! Sure, Serenity and Garrick had nine children, but do you realize how much of a rarity that is?"

"Besides," Ulani added, "even if elves do have that many children, it's rare for them to be close together. They're usually years apart."

"It stays low because they're also acceptable to disease, degeneration and the fact they don't have healers in terms of magic means even small injuries can become life threatening if not treated properly. I mean... Dad has to be in his mid thirties and that's considered old if you consider how hazardous their life style must be. They kind of need those ten kids, I mean how many of those ten kids are going to live to adult hood?"

While Lin, thankfully, had never been sick a day in her life was well aware this was not the norm. A fact she discovered when she heard the twins had become sick during the winter while she was gone.

"Hazardous?" Ulrich blinked at that. "How hazardous can their lives be? Other than the slavers, of course. I mean ... it's not as if they're at war or anything, or as if their children are being taken as slaves, or ..."

He looked to Ulani for an answer, but for the first time, she had none.

"What do you mean, Lin?" she asked curiously.

"Children get sick," Lin paused and then amended, "Normal children without immunity to diseases get sick, easily. Winter especially is the worse time, because people are stuck in close to each other indoors, sickness that causes cough, fever, and other aliments are more likely to happen. If left untreated, or if it's a particularly bad case of whatever sickness they caught they can die from it."

Granted she didn't know if they had childhood illnesses that she had heard so much of, she and no one else in the family as far as she knew caught them, but she knew it was possible.

"Normal people can get sick, cities without the proper sanitation would be a breeding ground for an epidemic, a type of sickness that can strike down many within a few weeks. Also humans don't have the regeneration abilities like immortals do. Doing hard tasks all their lives will wear down their bodies, and like a... an axe that is used a lot, as their bodies get older they start to wear out. It becomes harder for them to bend their joints, their eye sight begins to go, they become more prone to becoming ill, and if they're very old or very unlucky their memory goes too. To say a human dies of old age, doesn't begin to describe what happens to them."

"Well ... yes," Ulani said uncertainly, "but ... that's not hazard, that's just ... mortality. Hazards are things that are outside dangers, unnatural dangers. Situations, items ... but what you're describing is simply the deterioration that comes with age with mortals. But with a birth rate as high as theirs, really it's amazing their population isn't larger than it is."

"I would say that most of their children live to adulthood," Ulrich said thoughtfully. "Not all, certainly, but ... a good percentage. At least nine out of ten, yes?"

Ulani nodded. "Yes, that sounds about right."

Lin shrugged, that hadn't been her understanding about the children, but she knew Ulani and Ulrich would know better.

"Mortality though does cut down, like I don't know what their average age is... but.... if their birthrate is that high there has to be something."

Like a civil war maybe who knew, all sorts of things happen.

"Clearly," Ulrich chuckled. "But all we're saying is, we don't know what it is, and when we think about it it's a bit odd. That's all."

"To be fair, we've been rather preoccupied with our own kind lately," Ulani added.

Lin looked thoughtful at that, so maybe they weren't having that many children or who knows.

"True that," Lin murmured, "A lot has been happening in the past several decades. Though when watching Haven grow..."

She had to admit did it ever grow.

"It's weird... sometimes knowing Haven from the beginning. Earendil and I had a quick look while visiting Daeron at the two new barracks."

Ulrich smiled. "I like the design of the new buildings so much better than the old one," he said proudly. "The layout is much more efficient, and with the window in the hallway, no one has to worry about walking into walls or missing their doors. You would be amazed at how often it's happened in the first barracks. I think Aragost, Gwaethir and Bronwe are the only ones who haven't done it yet. Either that or they just haven't told me, but I do think they haven't done it. They none of them are the accident-prone types, and Bronwe can see in the dark as well as during the day."

He was particularly proud because he had been the one to design the new buildings, though he had also designed the first one. Still, he was glad of the improvements he had thought of.

"And yet... I can see Aragost and Gwaethir never missing their doors or walking into walls."

Browne was a given since he could see in the dark, but those two had other instincts to guide them. Though of course there were other methods to finding one's way like the light orb that Miyu liked so much or the rose that Lin wore.

"It's still strange to think that Aragost is blind," Earendil murmured with a faint smile. "He gets around as if he can see everything. And he knows so much ..."

Ulani chuckled softly. "It's a bit disconcerting, isn't it?" she smiled. "But be glad you're meeting him now, instead of when we first met him." She looked over at Ulrich. "We two were the first to meet him. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say we were utterly terrified."

Earendil frowned. "Then how did you end up bringing him here?"

Ulrich laughed. "Because he appeared in the middle of our room in the inn, looked at Ulani, and said, 'Yes, I will come with you.'"

Lin chuckled at that, she remembered how it was, "Everyone was wary of him at first, but he made himself unapproachable. Well at least the joke was to adults only..."

It was what made Miyu's friendship with him so down right odd at first.

Not happy to be up on a lap anymore Miyuki reached for the floor as if she wanted to get down. Lin giggled knowing that Miyuki would be bored but set her on the ground anyways holding out her hands to the baby.

"The first indication that he wasn't the unapproachable iceberg he pretended to be was the day Ahren went missing. Aragost was the one to find him. We fully expected Ahren to be absolutely terrified of him, just as everyone else was, but ..."

Ulani shrugged, and Ulrich chuckled and took up the tale.

"Ahren became his shadow for the next few weeks," he grinned. "It really made us question our perceptions of the man."

"It was sooner for me," Lin grinned, "It's the reason why I became so curious about him. He laughed.."

And despite what people would have thought it wasn't a scary laugh, of course when she looked back on it, she could see why he laughed in the first place.

"Well that and Miyu wasn't petrified of him..."

She even gave him a nickname, which was kind of weird and stuck after all this time.

She felt a tug on her fingers and slowly lifted them.

Miyuki pouted as she tighten her grip, which allowed her to stand, granted a bit wobbly on her legs.
