Earendil reached for the bed and crawled into it. He tried to pull up the blanket, but it was stuck around one of his feet, and he gave up, instead curling up into a ball with his face against the wall. In less time than it took for him to get comfortable, he was asleep.

Lin stared for a moment she had never seen him like this before, but what did she expect from him being stuck in a small cell for so long. Instead she went to cover up the window and then make sure he was covered up. Even though she knew he probably hadn't been too cold but who knew how he would feel when he woke up.

Then when she was sure everything was as it should be she went back up deck, curious to see how Alena was doing.

Alena had already made fast friends of Arwen and Roydon, and Storm and Starr had made an appearance on deck. Rhea had vanished, presumably to check on Haldia with the others.

Alena was in the process of explaining how they had come to live out here, so far away from the land where the Light Elves lived now, and Arwen and Roydon and the twins were listening quite intently.

Lin quietly walked up to the group, she was listening as well. Even though she knew part of the story, she thought maybe she didn't know all of it. One never knew, after all it was obviously not as simple as simply leaving one place and moving to another.

Not in a world like this one.

Alena was just finishing up with telling them how long they had been at sea before finding the island, and how it had at first seemed an ideal place, and how after it had become their home, they had been attacked.

"Hello, Lin," Starr smiled at Lin as she joined the group. "I'm glad to see that you got back safely. How is Earendil doing?"

"He's fine, just sleeping," Lin replied, "He went right to sleep the moment we got into his room."

Any longer and she was sure he probably would have slept on the deck.

"That's good," Starr smiled warmly. "I don't think Haldia was able to sleep, she went to her bunk but she didn't want to be alone. Celeb's been with her since she got back."

Storm glanced towards the two, then leaned in to join their conversation. He jerked one thumb at Alena over his shoulder. "Why is she here?" he asked Lin, obviously not too pleased with the stranger's presence.

"We need open communication with the ruler in order to be able to study and chart this island," Lin explained, "She is representing the prince who is ruling in his father's place while he's off fighting the gnomes."

She could kind of understand why Storm wasn't pleased, not with the rough start that they had.

"She's really nice though, don't worry. The sooner we get it all sorted out the sooner we can get started. Besides, we can't chart the other side of this island without their help. The gnomes will create an additional problem of a very serious sort."

Storm scowled and looked over at Starr. "We should as Shiro about these gnome things," he muttered. "I've heard of them before."

"They were from Gaia," Starr reminded him, "that's not the same thing. Though I won't deny that Shiro just might know something about them, he seems to know about just about everything."

"He didn't say anything about the elves here," Storm pointed out.

Starr laughed. "We haven't even seen him since finding out that there are elves here! Of course he hasn't said anything!"

"I don't think he would know," Lin shook her head, "Sir Valdemar didn't know but since they left after the separation it's not a surprise he wouldn't know. The only person who would have known is either Aerin or Elros. He's never met Aerin and he never interacted really with Elros except when he was giving language lessons."

And that had been a long time ago back when they had been children. No... she doubted Shiro would know about them.

"As for the gnomes I don't know, Starr is right I don't think Gaian gnomes are out to torture and maim people, just like the majority of Gaian demons aren't. Now it's just the process of finding Shiro."

She wanted to consult Shiro if there was anything about the First Age about gnomes, while her memory was at times spotty unless it had a huge impact on her, Shiro's she knew was flawless as far as she knew.

"Well, there's no harm in asking," Starr shrugged. "I know he's read everything in Sir Valdemar's library ... Ninako's library, I guess. maybe there was some obscure reference that he picked up on."

She started towards the door that led down to the bowels of the ship. "This way, he said he was looking for more oil for his lantern."

There could be, because well... Lin was curious of course. She motioned for the two to follow her down below deck.

"I wonder if he found that oil yet," she murmured thoughtfully.

Starr wrinkled her nose. "Well ... Arwen wasn't exactly sure where it had been stowed, so ... he had a bit of a job ahead of him. You know how many crates of supplies we still have!"

"Though the oil would be in a barrel," Storm reminded her. "Not a crate."

"True, but we've got barrels enough as well," Starr laughed.

She led the way down the stairs into the hold, and headed straight for the second level down, since the first level was the crews' quarters.

Once they were down to where storage was, Lin had a good look at the area. She had been down there once or twice before in the beginning of the trip out of pure boredom. Granted that was at the beginning of their journey and that had been way over two years ago.

The hold was lit with small lanterns all around the hull of the ship, enclosed so that they would not be a danger. The entire hold was filled tip to bottom, one end to the other, with crates and barrels, stacked neatly and well organized.

"There, at the other stairs!" Starr pointed, smiling. "Shiro!"

The neko had just appeared at the top of the stairs that led down to the next level of the hold. He blinked, the lanternlight reflecting eerily in his red eyes. "You were looking for me?" he asked, flicking one ear.
