i've been thinking about this for a while...(my friends say that i think too much) so why do people join band when they are not willing to dedicate themselves to it and acually practice? a little over a third of our band is like that. this one girl said 'her parents made her join band.' seriously, why can't 'her parents' make her join chorus or something? (just out of curiousity)

I'd say a lot of people join it because they know that they can screw off and get a good grade for the class...... An "easy A" if you will... It's okay to do that with an art class where you're only hurting yourself, but it's very irritating when people like that join band because it needs to be a group effort and when one person screws off, it affects everyone sad

And unfortunately, the upperclassmen slackers provide a perfect example for all the incoming freshman that are there for a grade; they've perfected the art of just doing the bare minumum. People like that make me really sad.
*applaudes* well said. too bad there isn't tryouts for my regular band. anyone can get in even if they can barely play an instrament, or just fake it. What a sad, sad world we live in.

Our director does auditions before concert season so he can tell who can and cant play. When someone sucks THAT bad on a common instrument like sax, clarinet, flute, or trumpet, he throws them on french horn, tuba, baritone, or whaeevr ese we need. Usually it pays off too. The people that fake it are funny though, Gwen Stefani was in our band back in the day and she played piccolo... but primarily just made out with her boyfriend in our drum room. Our former director (weve only had two in 40 years) never noticed her lack of plaing because he put too much faith into us, lol. And now Gwen Stefani still hasn't returned our band uniforms she borrowed for her tour, meaning a lot of our seniors are running around in wrong sized uniforms xD

yeah, my elementary school band teacher actually encouraged faking instead of helping us with the stuff we were having trouble with. the band was pretty tiny. I was section leader and I couldn't even play over the break. sweatdrop Right now I'm working on getting double C out...Any tips?

I use one and one fingering, which seems to work pretty well.. It also doubles as a slightly out of tune G. If you want more advice, a bunch of us 'screechers' have forums all around about 'climbing the mountain'.

hm....more then half of the people in our band are dedicated o_O;

new york and boston, wow it was great smile , carnegie hall was so beautiful, dr. gary gilroy came over as a guest conductor, (a conductor from cal state fresno i think) he's full of life and music, great guy, really was ^_^, he wrote the song "creapy wiggly things" for our middle school's percussion ensemble, biggrin conducted that, it was so great, he also conducted kirkpatrick.

Mr. A says that in May the percussion ensemble is gonna be recorded for a C.D!!!! O_O!! biggrin I'm so happy for my friends Margaret and Jacqueline!!! ^_^

anyways, the boston symphony's bass trombonist doug (i believe he's one of the two best trombonist/bass trombonist in the world) did a clinic with us, he gave us a lecture about music saving lives, and true music dying, he says we are the last generation, the only hope of keeping it alive, he says our school is gonna be the school that makes a difference blaugh he's a wonderful guy. ^_^

he was so impressed with our middle school wind ensemble that he's coming here to california to work with us for free!!!!!!!!! he says that, "I bet that you're middle school is the best in california, if not the best, then I'd have to say you're one of the top three bands in the nation!" ^_^ I was so delighted to hear that.

two people from our wind ensemble already got scholarships from harvard O_O!

mr. a expects so much out of me...he says that even the bass trombonist was impressed with me (he didn't even hear me play and he's impressed? o_O) i think he did -_- either that or i heard wrong...mr. a says that one day people will be coming to a concert to see me in the boston symphony... redface redface

such a great trip...i loved it ^_^

Heyy...I'm totaly new here...i play flute in the full orchestra in school...i also am in the band...but i'm in low brass (sorry fluties but we have like a million...so i opted for trombone this year...since there are none) i havn't played the same instrument for more than one year in a row, i'm a spohmore and I LOVE BAND!!!
PostPosted: Fri Apr 21, 2006 1:05 pm

I really don't see why trombone is so underrated. If I played brass, that's the horn I'd do.
