"You're welcome," Toby replied with a smile. Alright, maybe it had gotten across regardless of his own nerves. He hoped so, so long as it didn't make Maia think any less of him. The balance between his professional persona and the real him got lost sometimes. He wasn't really sure what to do now that Maia was living in the house.
When they all sat down to play he did see her yawn and smiled slightly. "You gonna make it?" he asked.

"I'm going to try," Maia said, picking up her controller. "Dari, did you read the instructions or is this a learn as you play sort of game?" she asked. She watched as the start screen came up. "Okay, whoever's player one, press start," she said.

All of a sudden Maia was the boss. Huh. Toby had yet to see this side of her since Oregon. He just smiled to himself and turned back to the screen. Dari leaned over the arm of the couch to retrieve the instruction manual. He hadn't read anything about it, really. Most games came with tutorials or at least tips.
"Hey, Jiggles," Toby said. Dari turned and perked. "That's you."
"Oh. Sorry." He pressed 'start' and then leaned over to pull the manual from the case.

Maia leaned against the back of the couch and waited for the game to begin. She stifled another yawn. "You really love Dari, huh? He told me you call him names because you love him."
She watched the screen change when Dari hit start. This would be fun!

Toby just chuckled in response, turning to Dari. The alien was smiling but made no other move but to lift the manual. Things were happening, though. The screen was changing. He was more interested in that at the moment. Hey, if they needed help, he had it, but without instructions it was more like an actual adventure. In the dim like this, his eyes could be seen glowing.

The screen lit up to show an ocean backdrop, things were moving in the background. It was a tropical ocean setting, Maia could see that from the bright colors. That meant no orca whales, they preferred the colder waters. There'd probably be warm water sharks, though... Still, it was beautifully done. "Oooh," she marveled at it. She sat up, looking at it.
"It's beautiful."

The setting was definitely tropical, although it couldn't be said for sure how much actually happened in the water. You had to at least be around it a lot for the backdrop to go tropical like that. The partners shared a glance over Maia's back as she hunched over. Clearly this was a better choice than zombies. Toby held out a hand for the manual and Dari delivered it, and the werewolf flipped through. Huh. He had to admit, he'd never heard of this one. Dari tended to like the indie stuff, though.

Maia watched Toby with the manual. "What do we do?" she asked. She couldn't read what was on the screen, so she looked to the werewolf for guidance. She leaned back against the couch, yawning. Ugh. Maybe she'd have to start drinking that awful bitter stuff people drank in the mornings.

"I'm not sure. The green button is 'interact' and that's about it. I guess we'll have to find out." Toby shrugged. It didn't seem like a very exciting game, but Dari might like it. He really was far more into this stuff than Toby himself. What else was he supposed to do for the eight-to-twelve hours everyone else slept?
Toby swirled his viewing joystick and smiled. "Look, that's you. Well I mean, one of them's you." Two divers were just beside him, one blue and one yellow. He pressed the 'interact' button and heard a gurgle, watched bubbles float up. Huh! Well if it wasn't exciting it was rather pretty anyway.

Suddenly, a sea monster swam up in front of them. There was no other way to describe it. It looked like a relative of the loch ness monster. Maia seemed particularly unfazed, but it did seem to catch her attention. She grinned. "Look, Toby! Have you ever seen one?" she pointed to the screen. "There's one in Oregon."
She moved her joystick so her character came into few. It turned out she was the yellow one. "I hope we don't have to fight it."

As it turned out, Toby was a red-colored diver. He gave Maia a bit of an odd look. A what? A Nessie? In Oregon? What was it with Oregon and supernatural inhabitants? He didn't think Maia had any reason to lie, though. He knew such things existed and were beyond the scope of FBPI regulations as a general rule. If they attacked a ship it was just damage control and looking for it, and none had done that in a while.
"Yes," was his only response, and he turned back to the screen. "Let's follow it."
"And what if we do have to fight it?" Dari asked cautiously. Nobody wanted to have nightmares.
"I don't think we will. If we do, we'll run away, hm?" It seemed the creature had caught Toby's attention.

Maia smiled at him. She'd suspected he wouldn't believe her. He hadn't seemed to about the kelpie. "They're gentle creatures. At least the one I met." she said. She nodded as Toby suggested following it. "Okay," she agreed.
She had her scuba diver move towards where the nessie had gone. "Yeah. Let's run away if we have to hurt it." It deserved to swim in the ocean just as much as anyone.

"I don't think anything's just naturally violent," Toby offered with a shrug, now leaning forward on his knees. "Aggressive, maybe. Not just hurting things for the sake of hurting things, though. Then again we're still not sure if 'the kracken' and giant squid are the same thing. ...is there a 'speed up' button?"
He pressed buttons experimentally and watched Dari shoot out in front of them.
"How'd you do that?" Toby asked.
"B."
"The red one speeds up," Toby told Maia. There seemed to be some kind of meter that drained when you did it but that was fairly normal. It also implied that there would be things to run from. Hopefully that wouldn't induce more nightmares.
They continued in the direction it had gone. The speed stopped when the meter ran out and then slowly started refilling. Standard. But where had the Nessie gone?

"The kraken exists," Maia said helpfully. "Giant squids are small in comparison." She watched Toby try buttons. He seemed to have become interested now, after seeing the sea monster.
They went in the direction nessie had gone. The creature seemed to have disappeared... "Oh, maybe it's in the cave down there," Maia said, noticing a cave in the rock. "I bet that's where it lives."

A grin swept across half of Toby's face. The kraken? How would she know? Come to think of it, it was possible she was just repeating things she'd heard from children. This time, anyway, about the kraken. She claimed to have met a Nessie. Their official name was evading him at the moment.
Also, caves. Caves never bode well in video games.
"We can check," Dari said, "Just don't speed up yet, so we can get out if we have to." He was imagining something like an enormous angler fish, personally.
