Question. Do starting soul reapers get to make a zanpakuto BEFORE joining a squad? It sounds like dumb question to me but I need to make sure.

At the moment, it's not required, but very very soon, we will be implementing a rule that requires all new members and shinigami to go through a "Zanpakuto Formation Ritual" in the Academy Subforum.
((It's something that we used to do that we don't anymore))
There will obviously be a Grandfather rule that makes it so everybody that already has a Zanpakuto doesn't need to make one again. Squad 7 Captain

I believe Vizard is only obtained after mastering shinigami abilities and not obtainable from the start.
