A brief grin flashed across his face, then disappeared. "I can imagine." he replied, then moved to adjust his weight on the wall. "If you really need...I suppose I'll leave you to what you need to do. Gather your thoughts and get comfortable with your stay here while it lasts."

Strange raised his eyebrows, though otherwise his expression was completely remote--unreadable. "Meaning?" he asked quietly.

"Well..." X began. "Some people have been carted off to other realms by other beings. Some have been killed. Some have been used as lab rats, then sent back to their home universes. Others have been turned into dolls. Some have simply been abducted. And the rest...well, this was only meant to be a temporary planet."

"... Meant, huh?" Steven's gaze had turned flinty. "You're the one who did this, aren't you?" Around him, he could feel the house growing tense, the magic in the air practically crackling with hostility. "Teleportares." Suddenly, a small, innocent looking urn was sitting on the desk beside him. "Funny thing. I noticed this as soon as you teleported in. Why on earth would something like this have the same power signature that you do?"

X stared down at the small urn for a moment, recognition flashing in them before Strange even pointed out that it had something to do with him. Outwardly, he didn't give much of a reaction. Internally...he wanted the jar. At the very least he didn't want the young wizard poking around at it.
X shrugged. "Your other half had one of the beings I was keeping contact with. When he left, I tried to speak with the being." he replied, then shifted his weight again. "Strange decided to keep that bit of me here as well."

The young man looked suitably surprised... and interested, which was probably enough to suggest that he was at least partially aware of what something like that could do. "I see. Well, it was... nice to meet you," he concluded politely after only a slight pause. It was clear that this younger version was better at PR than his older counterpart.

X smirked a bit and nodded. "Likewise."" he replied, then paused for a beat. "I don't suppose there would be much point in asking for the jar, would there?" He figured that it would be a resounding no, but it was still worth asking.

Strange smiled a very slight, very chill, very polite little smile. "Not really. It's not mine to give." He wouldn't have, even if it had been his, but there was no point in saying that.

X opened his mouth to say something, but paused and glanced away. Someone was about to put their nose in his business. Oh well...he'd still have a few minutes to spare. Glancing back at Strange, he smiled and nodded. "I didn't think so. Well then...I suppose I'll just let you know that I don't take it very well when people mess with things that are mine. Though...I'm sure you wouldn't be one to mess with such things."

Strange leaned back in his chair, looking absolutely unruffled. "Believe me," he said lightly, "I make a living by doing as little as possible at any given time." Despite his words and relaxed demeanor, his eyes were still completely unreadable.

X paused a moment once again, then smiled and adjusted his weight on the wall. Honest interest flashing across his face. "Alright, I've gotta ask. What's the universe like you come from? There's something...different about you compared to the other Strange."

A small but honestly amused smirk flickered across the younger man's face as his eyes flicked around the dark, classically beautiful interior of the study. "... yeah. Something." Then he shrugged. "I don't know... it's the same as anywhere. I haven't seen enough of this one to draw terribly accurate comparisons. I'm obviously younger than the version that lives here, and I don't speak ancient Greek. Other than that, I couldn't tell you."

X looked curiously for a moment, then shrugged a bit himself. "Maybe it is just the age. I'm sure he would have kicked me out or given me a lecture quite some time ago. This is probably the longest conversation I've had that's been anywhere close to pleasant."
Maybe it was just the inexperience that made this Strange more...bearable to be around. After all, it was essentially the same Strange, right?

Strange grinned. "Well that's the problem right there: I don't think I COULD kick you out, and I'm too annoyed by lectures in general to indulge." Another, smaller shrug. "So... yeah. It probably is just the age."

X's smile grew a bit. Well, this isn't how he'd expected this little meeting to go...but he was getting a feel for the new guy. So far a rather good first impression. Perhaps he wouldn't hassle the man. At least not for a while. Let him get adjusted and get his bearings. Then if he starts trouble...then he could play.
