"Shall we stop talking and start running then?" Kurtis asked, wringing his hands.

"Good plan," Connor said in response to Kurtis. His apparent ignorance of Madeline's apology was his socially awkward way of accepting it.
"Let's move. We'll meet here." Connor rattled off a list of coordinates from memory. Luckily, Kurtis wrote it down.
Tiki led Madeline and Connor away.

The remaining three progressed, with Kurtis leading. "Well, until we encounter an obstacle, let's move quick and silent, right?" He spoke no further words.

As they ran, Xander got a call. Instead of saying anything, he simply waited until the other person realized that they phone had been answered to speak.
He grunted once and hung up. "That was Connor. We're to maintain radio silence until we're at the location." That made sense.
The three made it out of the facility easily enough. Now, they just had to make it up the slope without being spotted. Easier said than done, as there were multiple armed personnel moving around on patrol.

"So... how do we get from here to there unsighted?" Kurtis asked his companions.

As Richard and St. Cyrill prepared to leave, they got another message. St. Cyrill, being the ranking officer, took it.
"What?!" he roared. "They're sending a vanguard to 'make sure we get there safely.' More like 'don't try anything funny, mutants.' God."
He threw the paper to Richard.

McMullard let a hiss out from his teeth. "What, they don't trust us?" he asked rhetorically, voice dripping with sarcasm. "That's lovely, that is. Well, hopefully they'll still be reasonable about all this."

Alaric viewed his surroundings with a bit of disdain. No way around things, no real good alternatives... They were very much at a tactical disadvantage. He drew his gun from its holster, pulling the top back and making sure the bullet was in the chamber properly before holding it at his side, stepping forward.
"I'm not much of a shot, but we can proceed with a slow elimination if necessary... Which, at the moment, seems like it is. Unless any of you fellows happened to bring yourselves some rock climbing gear or jet packs or something. Even then, we'd still be plain targets," he said, light humor in his tone, with some degree of critical thinking. He wasn't good with these sorts of situations, with such narrow possibilities.
At least he had military training, and was a better marksman than most. There didn't seem to be any way around the situation, so hopefully between him and the others, they would be able to proceed through this, with minimal casualties...

Madeline stuck closely with Connor and Tiki. They were getting by the guards quite quickly. Stay alert, Maddie. Just because it seems easy doesn't mean it will remain that way.

"Sorry, I left my jetpacks in my office," Kurtis replied with a grim smile.
Whether he was serious was unclear.

There was a man standing strong. He seemed to be staring off into the distance. There was a glare in his eyes that seemed to show such anger and hatred, it was almost shocking. The wind swept by, but that didn't matter. This man cared for nothing except for his opponent. Certainly he thought of his opponent and how he fiercely fought against him in the first battle. Though he failed, there were more matches to come - the man had won in the second fight.
This angry and obsessed man was named Richard McMullard. And his opponent, whom he fought with all of his strength, was a tree.
This was no ordinary tree. Its trunk was thick, and its branches were sharp. It had studied the secret art of tree boxing - something that no human had ever encountered. McMullard had been surprised the first time they fought - this was such an incredible deciduous enemy to fight against! Its leaves shimmered in the wind, as the two stared each other down. How the tree was able to stare down a man is unknown, but this tree was that amazing.
McMullard soon learned that the tree was left handed - he was slowly learning the art of tree boxing. He had slowly been memorizing his opponent. Though the tree could not follow after McMullard, this tree had many friends.
And one day soon, more trees will go after McMullard. Then the birds will fly over him and drop some rather unpleasant gifts on his head. The squirrels would ally themselves against the one that dared go after their friend, the tree. And once all the trees of the world united against McMullard, there would be no escaping the horrible fate that the tree had forced onto the man.
The only way out was to beat this tree at this very moment. Once and for all.
Madeline lightly smacked the side of her cheek. She was getting rather tired, and when she did, all sorts of crazy stories came up in her head. She blamed it on lack of sleep.

It was three weeks later.
They had escaped the facility, and just in time: a new deployment of guards had arrived mere minutes after their successful escape. Kurtis, Xander, and Alaric managed to infiltrate the facility and steal themselves a helicopter. Tiki and Connor led Madeline out, got her into the helicopter, and they all managed to get out of the country.
McMullard and St. Cyrill showed up at the facility, as ordered, with their escort in tow. They were briefed on the situation and told to wait, which they did - with extreme discontent. They were allowed to observe all the research on the substance, given all of the notes, and allowed to ask any questions they had. This sudden and unexpected freedom was taken with a grain of salt; they knew they were going to be used.
After a few days, the military men reached a very tough conclusion. They had been given all this information, along with a sort of veiled, thin propaganda against those infected, like themselves. It became apparent to the paranoid St. Cyrill that they would be expected to hunt and kill those of the same type - even the more reserved McMullard began to think the same way. So, one night, the two simply vanished out of the facility, taking all of the information they had gained with them.
Two weeks passed. McMullard and St. Cyrill were wanted men, hunted by the entire US government and British forces. Tiki and Xander lost all of their jobs because they were on the run. The scientists were put out, unable to research and in an unfamiliar situation with no apparent means of escape. The rest were equally uncomfortable.
Dr. Connor eventually received word that there were people with the full research on the substance out there. The substance had made contact once more, in the labs, and made itself known as PEACE. What it wanted, to this point, was not revealed. Connor sent word that he would like to meet these people, and the meeting was set.
The day of the meeting has come. Connor, Tiki, and their team went to meet with St. Cyrill and McMullard. They were to meet in ten minutes, at 1:30 PM, in a hotel room in Sydney, Australia. The military men had been hiding in Perth for weeks, and the other team had moved through Sydney the day before.
At the moment, the two teams were on their way to meet. Tiki, Connor and Kurtis, having left Madeline and Alaric in the care of Xander, were in a restaurant across the street from the hotel where they would meet the military men at Tiki's suggestion. They planned to watch and see what happened. Even as they waited, a nondescript car pulled up and two men got out. One had a brown leather attache case, and the two had the look of seasoned fighters. They headed into the hotel and Tiki got up to follow. He went in about thirty seconds after.
Kurtis grew edgy as the seconds grew into minutes. He hadn't heard gunshots, which gave him relief until he remembered silencers. Still, Connor held him together by demonstrating absolutely no concern, sipping a tea as he filled in a crossword puzzle with incredible speed. Kurtis was just beginning to get impatient when Tiki leaned out the window, smiling, and waved them up.
