Yeah, you have to beware random gifts from people you don't know, or even anonymous gifts if you have your settings to receive any.
Some people dump stolen items via gifting and it could get you a temp ban for having it until it's removed. You might even have your trades disabled, big mess.. sweatdrop

but why would they dump them with people they don't even know, wouldn't that defeat the point of stealing them? I mean I could see if they didn't like the person and were trying to get the person banned, but why a random person?

Multiple reasons I'm sure. I've heard of people doing it trying to take other people down with them, or to try to throw hacking investigators off the scent. Pure meanness... some people are just jerks. SimplySimone made a sticky about it in OMGaia recently: StickyShe didn't give specifics, but it's not the first time I've heard of the dangers of gifting..
