Everything was different now, even food. “I saw them at the store. Do they always come packaged in bags?” And so small, yet so thick. Was that the norm? “We had a long day yesterday, I thought this would be nice.” She offered him a plate and smiled at him. “These were my favorite,” she said.

"No, not at all."
Their space was limited, their bed was cramped, and the distance in which to move made eating awkward and extremely un-Victorian. Michael loved it.
"It's very kind of you, thank you." He took his first bite and chewed and swallowed before continuing, already cutting another piece with his fork and knife. "You know, for all the others can show us the modern day, perhaps we could bring some of our time to them."

Lissie took a bite of pancake. The cramped area was different, but somehow comfortable. It wasn’t the most graceful mean, though.
“I think that would be fun. I could give them recipes to try. I’m sure there’s victorisn cook books. We could show them all about our time.”

"Products are different now. I think perhaps we should just conjure them some," Michael said. "It won't offer them any nutritional benefits, but it would taste correct. ...now, there's a large cat at the headquarters who will be your friend for food above all else. We were not very close. We still aren't, but we're getting there."

“Oh.” It was a shame. Things were really that different? “We can do that. A big cat?” And if she brought him food, he’d be her friend. That sounded easy enough!
“Have you been feeding him, then?”

"Technically he's not a cat, but he certainly looks and acts like one. Have you heard of the Cait Sidhe? He's not nearly as scary as the legends say, though we can't really test his abilities with what we have, nor would we want to." He paused then, using food as an excuse to think of a properly-worded response.
"I have. We were... not the best of friends before, but I wanted to mend bridges."

Oh, a sidhe? They were fairies, weren’t they? She hasn’t heard of them. So they had powers? Apparently scary ones. “He sounds fascinating,” she said, and took a bite of pancakes. She chewed thoughtfully. “I’ll have to make amends with Toby’s wife. I think I really scared her.”

"Fascinating..." Michael repeated, and gave a chuff of laughter. His manner was looser now, less formal, perhaps because food had always meant family and chatting to him, or perhaps because a bed had only ever been for intimate friends. Whatever the relation was, he wasn't entirely aware of the change.
"Maia? I frightened her at first too. Human spirits frighten her. She and I are good friends now, though. I'm sure she'll forgive you."

“I’ll apologize,” Lissie said. Of course she’d gone for the person in the group most afraid of ghosts. The making amends thing would take longer now, probably. “How did you two become friends?” She asked.

"Well," Michael said, having to think on it a little. Certainly there had been a time when he and Maia had not been friends, but it felt like they had been forever now.
"Ah. Well, when her husband was away for work, we started to talk. Toby has been a friend of mine for a while. I didn't have many then. I was notoriously difficult. I helped to save him when he was shot, and Maia occasionally let me possess her to go on walks or into town when I was still Headquarters-Locked."

It sounded like quite the effort to become Maia’s friend. “I hope no one has to go away for us to become friends,” she said. “Maybe we could go on walks now, since you’re not anymore,” she suggested. “We could see town together.”

"Well, she made friends with me when I was still..." What should he even call it? "...a haunting." Sure. "It was more difficult for us than I'm sure it will be for you." They shared a common innocence and love for the world, so certainly this was true?
"Of course. I'd like that." He smiled over to Lissie. He hadn't gone for a walk in town with a love interest since...? Well, he couldn't recall. In his last few years, his apprenticeship had taken over a great deal of his life, and the friends he'd had were mostly old friends. He'd thought he could begin seriously looking for love after his apprenticeship was over, but that just went to show how you shouldn't wait.

Lissie hoped he was right. “Toby seems nice. He encouraged me to tell you how I felt, even after I’d locked him in.” She was pretty sure she’d scared him, too.
“Maybe we could go to a park.” It’d been so long since she’d been out, and she’d always loved the outdoors. Maybe they could—could they—“Do you think HQ would let us have a garden?”

"Toby has been doing this for a long time," Michael said, "Very little bothers him any more."
He thought a moment, and then frowned. "I don't think they could. The grove is in the open, and there are no windows in headquarters. It's underground." His eyes flickered away then and narrowed. Hmm. "There may be ways around it. I'll have to ask." Presumably Lissie meant a real garden, not a conjured one. "For the park, however, absolutely 'yes.'"

"Oh, good," Lissie smiled. She was glad she hadn't scared him too much, then. "Oh. Hm. Let me know when you find out," she said. "Could we go soon? When I settle in?" She didn't have anything to set up, but she could conjure something nice. She didn't expect the room provided would be big enough for the library.
"When do we leave?"
