"There are so many things that I've never had, it would be difficult to name just a few. I can always ask Toby to bake things, but perhaps... something ethnic? Would you like to try Mexican food?" Indian had been about all they had been able to get in his lifetime.
He couldn't take Lissie's arm any more for the cart he pushed, but he did smile and nod for her to follow as they continued around to the food. It was a relatively small section, and that was probably good to keep from overwhelming Lissie on her first time in a grocery store. There was still enough, though, to go wild.
"I'd like to try modern ice cream with you. Maybe we could have a sundae day."

“Mexican food?” Lissie asked. She’d never heard anything about it. Was it like Indian food? Or was it something like English food? “I’d like to try it,” she decided, and gave him a smile. “Toby bakes?” Now that was interesting. Could he make cakes?
“Ice-cream? A sundae?” Lissie thought for a moment, and then nodded. “Alright. A sundae day. How do we make ice cream?”

"He does. He cooks well too," Michael said. They were coming up on the candy first, but Michael bypassed it and went to the front of the section, where the produce and yogurts were.
"Well, we don't have to make it. Ice cream comes in tubs and boxes now. You keep it in the freezer, which is like a small ice box without the ice."
There were a lot of fruits and vegetables that could not necessarily be gotten in England and Wales during his and Lissie's lifetime. Yogurt certainly didn't come in tubs, and meat wasn't sealed like this. Cheese had never been something that came pre-sliced, nor in so many flavors.

Lissie was amazed by the amount of produce in the small section. Far more than any market she’d visited! She picked up a tomato. She studied it and smiled. “They’re much larger here,” she observed, before selecting a cucumber.
...and what was that? Lissie spotted something long and yellow, and headed towards it. She picked up a bunch. “What are these?” She asked. “They look like crescent moons.”
They didn’t have to make ice cream? ...Tubs? “A freezer,” she nodded. Another technological wonder! “Can we get some icecream?” She asked.

"Bananas," Michael said, "We can try some later. Unfortunately there's nowhere to keep ice cream on our trip back, but we can certainly go look, and I can conjure some." He motioned for Lissie to follow him to the back wall, the freezer section. "It's all back here."

“Bananas,” She echoed. She’d have to try one later. How did someone eat them, anyway? “When we get back to the hotel, will you conjure some?” She asked. She followed him to the freezer section.
“There’s so many flavors.”

"Of course," Michael agreed.
After browsing the ice cream and the various odd flavors therein, they continued through the rest of the grocery section and then headed for the checkout. Michael used the first funds in a long time to make an actual purchase, and then carried Lissie's bags back to the hotel. He had forgotten that they were sharing a room, but he was reassured now and reminded that he had wanted to spend some time alone there. There were no ulterior motives beyond getting to know the woman who had turned back from the light for him, though some holding might not go amiss.
"Do you want to have a picnic?" Michael asked as he hung her new outfit in the closet.

“I’d love to,” Lissie gave Michael a smile. It wasn’t so uncomfortable now, sharing a room with a man. Not with Michael, anyway. He was trustworthy. She conjured a blanket and spread it over the bed.
She sat, and smiled at him again. “I haven’t been to a picnic since...” she’d been alive. “This will be nice.”

On the bed? Well, sure. They could break the rules and picnic on the bed. It wasn't as if the food was real. There'd be no mess left to clean up and mistakes could be easily forgiven. Sometimes the worries of the living came back to him, just for brief glimpses, before he remembered the state of his life.
"What would you like to have? There's all the normal fare, or we could have ice cream... and bananas, didn't you say? There's a popular sort of sundae that uses bananas, but I suggest trying them alone first. They're very unique."

A sundae that used bananas? That sounded promising, but Michael had a point. Lissie took a moment and conjured one. She unpeeled the banana, and took a bite. Hm. Oh! Yes, unique was a good word for it. It had a different texture, and the taste... She couldn't quite describe it. She chewed thoughtfully, and took another bite.
"I'll try it in ice cream," she said. "What flavor ice cream would you like?"

"This is traditional," Michael said as he sat on the bed, gesturing to a banana split as it appeared. The ice cream was chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla with chocolate sauce, strawberry sauce, and pineapple. Michael preferred the natural versions to the sort that came in a bottle, so that was what he conjured for Lissie.
"Have you ever had pineapple before?" he asked, also conjuring an embossed spoon for decorum's sake. He waited for Lissie to go first, however.

Lissie studied the sundae for a long moment, before smiling and taking a bite. So... this was what modern icecream was like? It was sweeter than she remembered. Very nice! Traditional, though? How long? “Pineapple?” She asked. “This is really good, Michael,” she smiled at him.

"Well, I didn't come up with it," Michael teased, smiling. He took a spoonful of the strawberry himself, and his eyes rose to meet Lissie before the rest of his head did. "I suppose that I can take credit for making it, however. It is quite different, isn't it? I'd only had ice cream a few times, but it wasn't like this. Was ice cream more common in your time?"

“It is. I only ever had it during tea when mother would drag me along to her friends’. Cucumber, I think. I like this much better.” She took another bite. “You had to be very wealthy, to have this regularly, I think. We didn’t keep ice.”

"I've had that as well!" Michael said, with an uncharacteristic peak in his voice at the knowledge that they had had a shared experience. "We didn't keep ice either. It was just beginning to be something bought outside the home when I-- well. You know." Oddly enough, he still didn't seem upset by the idea. In fact, a half-smile lit his face. He took another spoonful and took some time to delight in it.
