Ash Rail Idk. My ear isn't sensitive enough for me to worry about quarter tones. They're not hard to notice if you know what to look for. Know what's really fun to play with if you have a friend around and a little bit of extra time before practice or something? Overtones. whee I went to a sax camp and the instructors played a whole song where the melody was made up completely of overtones. It's was so cool. I'm probably gonna have my senoir picture taken with my sax if they'll let me when the time comes, but that's not for years. xp

Wow, I've missed a lot, lol. I guess spending AX with Hornfreak and getting a job interferes with gaia posting razz Anyways, Hornfreak also gave me a song that's made entirely of overtones, called delta city blues or something.

Two very.... very... unrelated things.
You know how you might accidently pull a low D up an octave, or maybe that low Bb just comes out as a middle Bb? Well, that's an overtone. The second harmonic. If you "pull up" again that Bb would turn into an F. Yeah, an F. The third harmonic.
: / Dr. K., try looking it up on wikipedia.
Basically, there's a naturally occuring phenomenon called the overtone series. It's pretty interesting. The major chord/ scale comes directly from this natural form.
As for subtones... that's a sax thing. There's an alternate embouchure formation for lower notes to let you play more quietly, as well as change your timbre for the lower register. You know those really low, airy, almost skanky sounding bits on tenor you always hear on TV or in movies? That's what they're doing. Stan Getz is famous for playing almost exclusively in subtones.
Take him and Dexter Gordon. Though the Lester Young influence is still apparent in Dexter, Getz's tone sounds way different from Big D because he took that "wispy" sound to an extreme.
You like bossas, Dr. K. You've heard the original Astrud Gilberto , right? That has one of Getz's subton-iest solos.
