Miyuki looked over at Andarien's Eevee, that was interesting to hear.
"I was wondering about that," Lin admitted, "I didn't know if they just all had different colour coats or if it was a mutation."
Though it sounded like one that created a great advantage.
"Does this mean that difference in colouration carries over when they evolves?"
She could only imagine what it would look like in the future.

Shiro nodded. "It's part of their DNA. Like a caterpillar morphing into a butterfly. Designs they have as a caterpillar will carry over into their butterflyhood."
He turned back to the screen. "I'll let you find out in the future though what its evolved form will look like. No sense in spoiling surprises."
He grinned at them, then turned back to the tablet.
"How do people name them?" Andarien spoke up, cutting to the chase.
Shiro looked over at him. "Some people just call them by their species. Some people give them cutesy names. Some people ... well, there's no rule. It's like any pet. You can call it anything you want."
Andarien thought about that for a moment. "Um ... well ... it's an Eevee now, what will it be after it grows?"
Shiro looked at the screen. "There are ... seven possibilities," he said hesitantly. "Did you receive anything to direct its growth?"
"A collar!" Andarien beamed.
Shiro stared at him, not understanding what the significance was.

"The collar as a stone set into it," Lin explained, "Which I forgot to grab from my bag this morning. The one for Andarien's Eevee will allow it to evolve into an Umbreon."
Miyuki smiled at that, she remembered those collars and even though they had a more practical use, they were still pretty.
"The collar for mine is to get an Espeon," she told Shiro.

Shiro let out a low whistle. "Wow. Talk about going for power and intelligence here. But they'll make a good pair. So Andarien, if you want to name it after what it is and will be, its forms are Eevee and Umbreon. Otherwise-"
"Eon!"
Shiro blinked. "Eh?"
Andarien grinned. "I want to call him Eon! Because an eon is a really long time, right?"
Shiro nodded. "Yes ..."
"And we're going to be friends for a very long time!" Andarien beamed. "And it's like its name, too!"

Lin smiled at that, "That does sound like a wonderful name."
And it was pretty much neutral since they still didn't know its gender.
"So, does it say how to tell the gender of the Eevee?" she asked Shiro.
Since it would be preferable than calling it, an it all the time.

Shiro turned his attention back to the tablet as Andarien started playing with Eon.
"Nothing external," he shrugged. "Though I guess that's not rare, for Pokemon. Of course, there is the traditional method of checking ..."
Andarien blinked at Shiro. "What's that mean?"
Shiro chuckled. "Nothing bad. Just turn it around so it's facing you."
Andarien did so, which of course meant that the Pokemon's backside was facing Shiro. Without hesitating, Shiro reached over the table and lifted the creature's tail.
"Male," he pronounced after only a moment, letting go of the tail and nodding in satisfaction.
Andarien was pleased. "You're a boy!" he announced to Eon as if it were somehow a miracle. Of course, he wasn't remembering that 9 out of 10 Eevees were male.

Of course for Miyuki this wasn't a surprise, the odds of it being a boy was really large.
Lin nodded, now they wouldn't be calling it and it anymore.
"If you don't mind Shiro, could you print me off a list of friendly food for the Eevees. We do have specialty food, but you know how traveling is. That really should be saved for emergencies."
So it would best to know what they could and could not eat. She just hoped they weren't herbivores that might make things a bit difficult.

Shiro read through a bit of the information on his screen. "It says here they'll eat just about anything," he told Lin with a nod. "Berries are best, and fruit ... but anything they'll accept, they can eat."
"Nice and simple," Earendil smiled over at Lin.

"Yes," Lin breathed a sigh of relief, "That was really my only worry since they'll be on the ship with us."
She said they, because she knew it would take them a while to get to the port and was sure by then the other Eevee would have hatched, if not, it will on the ship.
"I forgot how we ended up eating a lot of fish and bread by the time we nearly got to where we're going," Miyuki commented.
While she did like meat as much as the nekos, even she had to admit she missed having a bit of ruffage after a while. Especially fruit.

"Well, Miyuki, Obaa-san tells me that you're learning about runes," Shiro grinned at her. "If you can master those preservation runes, you can take all you want and have fresh fruit the whole way."
"And vegetables?" Andarien asked, looking up from playing with his Eevee.
Shiro laughed. "And vegetables."

Miyuki looked thoughtful at that, "Really? But my penmanship needs to get better. I'm not bad, but since I can't yet imprint runes using magic I'll have to do it by other means."
Not to mention really complicated patterns couldn't be done by magic, as often they were large patterns. She wondered how large an array with preservation runes were.
"Do you know what else they can be used for?"

"Preservation runes, you mean?" Shiro asked, not sure if that was what Miyuki was asking about or not. "Well ... I should imagine they would be good for preserving just about anything. All kinds of foods and such ... probably flowers that you pick, too. With a good rune, I'm sure you'd even be able to keep things like milk fresh."
As he understood it, it would be as if time was standing still for the items affected by the rune.

Miyuki really didn't drink a lot of milk, but of course stuff like that tended to spoil easily so that wasn't a surprise.
"I mean... runes in general. I know they can be used to make large storage spaces, preserve things and even to keep unwanted people in or out, but that isn't all is it?"

"That's not nearly all of it," Shiro smiled, leaning back in his chair. "With runes, you can create portals, shields, barriers ... why don't we take a look through the library and see if we can't find a book on runes for you? Then you can learn even while we're traveling."
He stood and waited to see if Miyuki wanted to find the book.

"Okay!" Miyuki stood up.
She would have to be extra careful with the book though. While Gaia was a book culture she understood replacing a book could be troublesome and some books weren't that common.
Besides, he had her at shields and barriers.
