The sound of foot steps approaching was not immediately alarming. Zeke shared his living space with multiple others, student living affording very little in the realm of privacy. It was the voice, deep and unfamiliar, drawling out his name and age that was startling. With great effort the man forced his eyes to open, though they snapped back to a thin slit as the light(diffuse and dim in reality) hit him like a pair of a hi-beams.

The witty retort was unexpected. Well, all of this was, really, but that seemed even more so. Zeke blinked, making his eyes adjust and focus on the smiling man that was standing before him. "The ******** are you?" He didn't sound offended, more curious. "Usually like to know a guy's name before we get down to the nitty gritty." That was a lie.

Now that he could see properly again he couldn't help but look past Finn and out into the room they were standing in. Dim, with glowing lights in odd shapes, and row after of what looked like pods. Such as the one he was still standing in. "Huh." The backs of tanned knuckles run over the side of the opening, lips twisting thoughtfully. He probably should have been alarmed, or maybe pissed, but it seemed as though there was something he was struggling to remember, and just couldn't reach it.

Hazel eyes slid back to the clipboard before snapping back up to meet the other man's eyes. Er. Eye. "There are a lot of questions coming to mind here. I'm gunna assume, what with the clipboard, that you have some answers." He gave a lazy smirk. "Or you're some super villain, and this is your secret lair."

4:14 PM, but no date, which meant that he had to just assume that he'd been asleep for more than just a few hours. The faint smile was still on Chance's face as he headed down yet another row, turning a corner at a leisurely pace, hands still tucked comfortably into his pockets.

"Well, if you insist," he said lightly, and slowed his steps, bent over, and touched his Converse-covered toes, straightening after a moment. "There you go, I haven't been compromised, as you put it, though, like you've already said, I'm walking and talking just fine."

Whoever was speaking over the intercom was clearly unimpressed with him, not that Chance particularly cared. He slipped his hands back into his pockets and continued walking, the glint of silver on his ears just barely visible beneath the head of curly black hair.

Deus Ex Machina. Recruited. Laboratory. Life Division. The words flew past him, sliding through his mind like water, Chance retaining what was necessary to understand his situation. He did dimly recall being approached by someone, but it was like trying to remember a dream, a hazy memory.

Still, it all seemed right, so he supposed it was all good.

"Who are you, then?" Chance asked casually, peering around another row that ended in a dead end and doubling back to take a different route this time. "What's your name?"

The man was literally taking a leisurely stroll among the neophytes, and Jack felt a twinge of annoyance at how blase he was acting about this. Nevermind that the ignorance wasn't completely Chance's fault, there was a certain sort of behavior he expected from the newly awakened: preferably one that took his guidance more seriously.

It was almost physically possible, then, to feel how hard he rolled his eyes when Chance listened to his instructions.

"And losing yourself," he added under his breath, audible still thanks to the megaphone, before continuing in the same business-like tone. "My name is Jack Hawthorn. I am currently an intermediate trainee in the Life Division."

He offered nothing further, intent on watching the guy wander around just to see how long it took him to find the exit.

A small grin wormed its way onto Chance's face, half hidden as he ducked around yet another corner. "Getting lost isn't so bad," he said easily. "Sometimes getting lost is much more fun than actually getting to your destination, wherever the ******** that is."

There wasn't really an attempt at being philosophical, more so Chance just stating whatever thoughts came into his head. He lifted a hand and absently brushed a stray curl out of his eyes and finally, as he turned into the next aisle, he caught a glimpse of a far wall, a door.

"Well, Jack Hawthorn," said Chance as he began to make his way down the aisle, casting disinterested glances at some of the faces of the people as he passed by each pod. "You're totally a natural at this whole welcoming thing, really, you should do it more often. I can hear the sheer happiness and overwhelming joy just radiating in your dulcet tones."

He reached the end of the aisle and in front of him there was a small desk, more of a table, and a long-legged, pale haired figure was sitting in a chair in front of it, eyes on the screen in front of him. Chance's smile was vague, and he slowed to a stop at the end of the row, leaning against the nearest pod.

"So what exactly does the Life Division do?"

Ah, there. That seemed to have woken him up a little bit. Finn's smirk only widened as this, Ezekiel, showed off just how very limited his vocabulary seemed to be. Letting out a light tsking noise, he made movements with a pen over his clip board as though recording something important (he absolutely wasn't), before answering the other man's crude question.

"I am Finn Connor, and I've, unfortunately and much to my utter dismay, been assigned to the depressingly tedious task of welcoming you to your new home. You'll be pleased to know that you have wound up on a beautiful, sunny, tropical island! Sandy beaches, a lush jungle, and beautiful crystal clear water are all yours to explore!" And probably get killed in or on...... Finn's voice had taken on an overly enthusiastic tone that he quickly dropped as he let out a scoff and gave a shake of his head.

"You poor ******** b*****d. Look, I'm going to level with you. You've landed yourself in quite possibly the shittiest creek imaginable, and while it may be my job to hand you a paddle, there's a hole in your boat and you are sinking, much to quickly to save yourself. Now listen up, because I hate repeating myself."

He paused for a moment, watching the other man to make sure that he was indeed paying attention. "You may be experiencing temporary memory loss, so this might not seem like the truth at first, but you were at some point, possibly quite recently, recruited by a member of Deus Ex Machina. You have now just awoken from a cryogenic sleep of sorts. This is a military base, located, as I said, on a tropical island. As soon as you are ready, you will be taken to a place known as The Cove, where you will choose a weapon." He paused again, tilting his head to the side slightly as he frowned in thought. "Or rather, it will choose you."

Whatever he meant by that, it didn't seem he felt any need to elaborate, as he continued.

"You will than be assigned a dorm room. Your uniform and belongings will be given to you, and you will be sorted into the appropriate division based on how....." He let his voice trail off, pulling out his phone to glance at the time. s**t, he still had hours left in this place!

"Where your talents lay." He finished, pocketing his phone. "You'll probably be given a better tour of the facilities, and most likely a handy pamphlet that should answer any other questions you may have, thus saving me from giving you further explanation right at this precise moment!" He sounded positively cheerful again by this last.

"Now, if you'll kindly exit your pod, we'll get you on your way."

Even better: an unimpressive starter who thought he was a comedian. Deus was just in dire need of those.

He clicked the megaphone off and muttered a few choice words about his luck.

By the time Chance arrived, Jack was leaning back in his chair, the megaphone replaced by his book. Behind his new reading lenses was a thoroughly disinterested look that he hoped would spur even a dense idiot on his way. Again, though, that counted on luck, which up until now seemed good enough to let him survive and rotten enough to make him suffer for doing so in every possible way.

"Nothing that I would imagine you could help with," he said without looking up. "Throwing more jargon your way would be pointless anyway, even with my dulcet tones. The door is on your right. I'm sure another tech with equally unimaginable joy can handle your induction."

Chance hardly seemed bothered by the somewhat less than enthusiastic greeting, his expression still quite placid, arms tucked loosely at his sides. Jack Hawthorn's blatant not interested go away face was actually sort of amusing, and Chance blinked slowly at him, tilting his head.

"Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning, didn't they?" he asked lightly. He raised both of his hands, palms facing outward in a gesture of submission. "Sorry, I was just being curious. No harm intended. You seem like you know what you're doing, is all, so I thought I'd ask."

A smile played at the corners of his lips. Chance glanced sideways at the indicated door and then back at the man in the chair again before his eyes moved, almost restlessly, around at some of the pods, and then inexplicably at the ceiling.

"Any chance - " (Pun not intended.) " - you could tell me what division I'm inm then?"

You seem like you know what you're doing. When had that suddenly become a compliment rather than a gross understatement?

"No," he said flatly. "That is neither in my interest nor in my power. A different tech, as I stated before, will assess your skills before long. My job is been to watch the pods and brief those who happened to wake while on my shift."

Was his <******** off aura offline or something? Or was this guy in such a daze that he honestly couldn't take a hint?

"If I had to put my money on it, maybe Sun," Jack offered airily, his gaze still on the book. "That's where they stick useless louts if only for numbers. You learn quickly or you die quickly. Either or."

A snort and a widening smirk was answer to that derisive tsk. ******** him(maybe), Zeke had just crawled his was out of a months(be was guessing) long coma, he was allowed to exploit a limited vocabulary until his brain had time to wake up fully. By how little was making sense, he figured he was running at a little better than half capacity at the moment. There was quite a bit Finn Conner was telling him that would no doubt need clarifying later, but he felt he was at least retaining the crucial bits.

"Nice to meet you, Finn Comner. ". He was right, any memory revolving recruitment, or a job, or a military facility was just not there. For all her knee the shorter man was Lyon through his teeth.

Naw, probably not. He's introduction speech had that over all feel to it that he didn't give enough shits to be bothered with lying, not even to sugar coat the apparent hell hole he'd woken into. Sorry, tropical hell hole. Unfiltered honesty, Zeke always found it refreshing.

Any questions that showed in the twitch of a brow or tug of lips was files away and saved for later. Possibly, with the return of his memory, these things would make more sense, and if not. Well. He could always go looking for Finn later. Convient excuse to seek out what was proving to be an interesting fellow. "So military compound, tropical island, a job, and soon to be a weapon and role?" These he were sure where the key points to walk away with. "And a uniform." Less key, but worth having been mentioned. He eyed Finn, looking for any hint of the supposed uniform, and saw nothing that fit in any conventional sense of the word.

Although everything he was wearing fit nicely. Probably not the time to notice, but what the hell. Finn had initiated with that one joking comment.

As requested Ezekiel stepped out of the pod he'd been standing in, not even bothering to hide the amused grin that seemed utterly at home on his tanned features. Yep, Finn was definitely worth looking into. Of for no other reason than to strike up a possible acquaintance. Time, of course, would tell if be continued to prove entertaining.

"So, weapons?" What the hell had he meant by being chosen by the weapon? "We're talking military grade rifles?" An auburn brow lifted.

Here was a man who took his job very seriously. And who also may or may not need to remove the stick from wherever it was stuck up his a**. Chance lowered his gaze from the ceiling and leveled a mildly curious look toward the other. Inside one of his pockets, his fingers twitched a little, almost as though they were trying to hold onto something that wasn't there.

"Ouch," said Chance, without much heat behind it. "Useless is pretty harsh when you've only just met me. But I guess you're kinda right anyway, at least when it comes to all of this stuff." He waved a hand around him. "Since I don't really know anything here and now. I do like to think I'm pretty not-useless in other areas, though, but que sera."

A faint smile touched his lips. "I don't really want to die quickly though, so I guess that means I should get my a** in gear, right? Good to know, thanks."

He took a few leisurely steps forward, toward the door, paused, and took a few steps backward again, his dark eyes falling on the title of the book held determinedly in Jack's hands. Several black curls fell over his forehead again, clearly unable to be kept tamely back.

"By the way, they don't put King George the III in that book," Chance said lightly. "They should have, though; he descended into madness later in life, spoke total batshit nonsense for weeks, and everyone thought he was just totally crazy, or maybe possessed by the devil. But researchers later said he probably had porphyria."

Oh good, maybe Chance finally got the hint and he could be left in peace. But that would have been too easy.

Jack stiffened as the new trainee retreated from the door to bother him more. He had not been expecting a comment about his book, however, and in surprise he finally shot Chance a suspicious glance. Rarely did people actually share his book preferences, but this one? Of course he had to double check Chance's facts, and so he skimmed through the table of contents and the chapter on hemophilia before exhaling a short sigh through his nose.

"Must not have been notable enough against the rest," he muttered as he snapped the book closed. "Funny. Not many people read this sort of thing." His gaze went back up to Chance, somehow disapproving as he always was and yet a little intrigued. "Is there anything else?"

A faint look of amusement flickered across Chance's face, the corners of his lips quirking upwards slightly on one side. "One of the guys at the home I stayed at kept a few books like that lying around." One shoulder rose and fell in a vague sort of shrug. "He was pretty messed up, but it was better reading than a lot of the s**t they gave us, so I kept some of them after he was gone."

A small laugh escaped him. "Maybe not the best subject for a bedtime story, but hey, I took what I could get. And it kept me interested, so that was good enough as it was. If you like that sort of s**t, try The Book of the Bizarre, by Varla Ventura. Not as thick in history as that book," Chance added, nodding his head in Jack's direction. "And more entertainment than anything else, but it's pretty interesting. Or A Dark History of the Roman Emperors, that's got all sorts of stuff in it."

He thought for a moment at the last question, idly scuffing the toe of one shoe against the tile floor beneath him. "Not really," he said finally, eyes flickering around the room once more. "Like you said, I'll just have to get thrown into the thick of things and get my a** in gear and not get killed."

He smiled again. "Thanks for your help, I'll be sure not to be...what did you say, a useless lout?"

Oh good, this guy seemed to catch on quickly. Well, quickly enough that Finn figured he could have him on his way through the doors and paired off with a life tech that could explain things more thoroughly and take him to the cove to get his weapon, leaving the moon intermediate back to his much more interesting work of reading.

He studied the other man intently with a cold gaze, mentally ticking off each article mentioned as Ezekiel listed them back to him. When he was finished, Finn gave a sharp nod of his head. "Exactly. And---" He began, than paused, catching the way the other guy was now eyeing him up and down, either sizing him up....

....Or checking him out.

Finn was more inclined to believe in the latter.

"....You should also note that it is imperative that you bond with your weapon as soon as possible. Without a weapon, you wont last a week." He finished, smirking in amusement, taking a step back and gesturing for the man to walk with him, though doing nothing by the way of offering him any assistance, should he be at all shaky.

At that point, Finn finished with answering questions, so when Ezekiel asked him another, he simply sighed, shook his head, and answered with. "If you have any more questions, please direct them to the technician that will be taking over your orientation from here." Seriously, what part of saving me from further explanation right at this precise moment did this guy not understand? Finn was obviously just not interested in playing this role for longer than necessary, as he led the new recruit down the quickest path to the nearest exit, and stopped at the door, hand going to the handle.

Only than did he turn his head to rest his chilly gaze on Ezekiel once more.

"Good luck out there."

Handle cranked open, and Finn peeked out just enough to wave one of the life techs over, all while muttering under his breath. "Not that you stand a ******** chance anyways."

More cryptic information on weapons that raised more questions than answered them, but his guide, or whatever he was, seemed to have reached the limits of his greeting hospitality. Shame really, being handed off to some unknown on the other side of the door they her walked towards, Finn was interesting.

So they walked in relative silence, Zeke's attention split between taking in his surroundings and keeping an eye on the shorter man's back. Getting separated and lost would have been not only embarrassing, but just plain stupid.

He wondered how long he'd been in that pod. It had felt like a while, but really, how would he know? Curiously, he brought a hand up to brush his thumb along the edge of his jaw, feeling the bristled roughness of stubble in desperate need for a shave. He also checked his right brow, checking for the bar bell that pierced it. Down to the sides of his neck, fingertips running over the steel balls of his dermals. There were more, but it would have been a little difficult to peek just that moment and besides, if the rest were still in place, that one probably was too.

As they reached the door he slowed to a stop, flashing an amused smile as Finn wished him luck and ushered him into the next room, waving a tech over. He almost missed it, as a hand on his back began to guide him away, the pessimistic comment that followed him out.

My, wasn't that a comforting endorsement.

Before the door could close all the way Finn would hear a chuckle, possible see the lazy wave of a hand, before he tossed back his own parting words. "See you around, Finn."

He begrudgingly committed the titles and authors to memory and found himself wondering about what a bizarre little world they had. "I see," was all Jack said about it. He leveled Chance another stare as if to study a specimen, and then with a brisk air turned his chair back around and propped his feet up.

"You won't be smiling for long. Try not to get lost in the cove as well. Assuming any react to you." The book was cracked open again as he searched for his spot.
