Michael sat with one leg crossed over the other knee, his posture betraying something odd about him, but the clerk didn't seem to notice or mind. Them being the only people in the changing area, he knew the voice that rose was for him.
"Yes, of course!" he called back, and sat up and uncrossed his legs.

Lissie emerged from the changing room stall. She pulled at the hem to straighten her sweater. “Do you like it?” She asked. It was so different than what she was used to wearing. But it was nice. Comfortable. “Do I look modern?”

A smile spread across Michael's face. It was odd to see Lissie in such modern clothes, straight off the rack and unaltered, but they looked nice. It wasn't fitted like he usually liked, but there was something about it that was flattering.
"You do!" he said. "I like it. It's--" Not elegant, but something like it. Words were failing him as he admired her. "It's very nice."

Lissie smiled. “It’s not what I’d normally wear,” she said, studying herself. Especially not in public. But it was nice. She moved closer to Michael and placed a kiss on his cheek. “I’ll change, them you can show me the rest of the store.”

"That's all you want to try on?" Michael asked. He touched Lissie's cheek and smiled. "Certainly. Would you like me to purchase it for you? You will be able to conjure it, but sometimes a physical object can be comforting." If the clerk was listening, surely she'd just think they were speaking strangely.

“I think that’s all. Can we come back if I find something else?” She asked. She smiled at him before going back into the changing room. “It’s a bit expensive,” she said. The prices were beyond what she felt was proper for items she could conjure. Was there any way she could pay him back?
She came out again, holding the items over her arm. “What do you want to look at next?” She asked.

"Of course we can."
Once Lissie has returned to the changing room, Michael could only barely hear her, and to shout would be impolite. Instead he waited where he sat and stood when she returned. "Would you like them? Or not?" Then, when they reached the main aisle again, he gestured with a hand palm-up in either direction. "Right or left?"

“Could I buy them?” She asked. Conjured money would be illegal, certainly. Could she—Michael had said times had changed—could she find a job to repay him? “Left?” She suggested. “But I asked you what you’d like to see.”

Michael shook his head. "Not unless you have some modern money on you. I will buy it for you. Consider it a gift."
He started left, bringing them toward the jewelry, accessories, purses, wallets and bags. "I've been in a Target before. They are mostly the same, they are all set up in the same way. They've got them all over the world."

A gift? Well, it’d be rude to refuse, them! She nodded and gave him a smile. “Thank you,” she said, and offered him her hand. “All over the world?” She echoed. Whoever owned target must have been very rich indeed. And set up the same way?
“Jewelry?” Lissie paused to admire a particular locket in the glass case. They were so dainty, the necklaces on display! So beautiful.

Michael smiled. Even he had times when he craved some material thing or another. For Lissie, though, it seemed like she hadn't even had the option in many years. Of course she hadn't.
"There's more over there as well," he said, gesturing to the wall beyond the racks of scarves and purses. If her ears were pierced, she could have free reign of the whole section.

Lissie looked where Michael gestured before hesitating. So many things. Could anyone really want so much? She studied the scarves for a moment before looking to Michael. “Where to, now?” She asked. She felt greedy enough with the gifts Michael already planned for her. And these things were all lovely... but there were too many. “Are there books here?”
She’d like to look at books. Maybe they could learn something new together.

"There are, around the other side," Michael said. Lissie seemed overwhelmed, but the libraries of their time were far more well-stocked than any Target entertainment section. Books probably wouldn't hurt. He smiled and offered Lissie his elbow before guiding her back toward the movies, televisions, and the small area that held the books.
"Reading is not as popular as it once was, but there are still book shops and libraries."

With so much stuff, with the televisions and everything they passed, Lissie could see why reading wasn’t so popular. It was a small area, but Lissie hadn’t seen a physical book in a hundred years. She reached for one. “They’re so colorful now,” she observed, picking it up. She read the back cover.
“This one’s about a girl who talks to her shadow.”

"They are. Printing is much easier now. If we ever visit Tobias, he has a home printer we can use." It was easy to forget how exciting these things could be when he had been too insane to care and come around so slowly that technology was already normal to him by the time he could truly appreciate it.
He wandered into the aisle, browsing titles and looking for interesting cover art when he found something particularly scandalous. He chuckled to himself opened to a few different pages until he found a particularly tantalizing one.
"Now, I'm not certain how progressive literature had become by your time, but this one is about a young woman arriving in a new career and striking a personal relationship with her boss." Even ghost knew about Fifty Shades. He held the open book out for Lissie to take, smirking.
