Trying things on? In public? Was that even legal? Well. Lissie would assume Michael wouldn’t have suggested it if it wasn’t. “I’ll look first,” she said. “People now days...” Tsk. They always looked like they were wearing their underthings.
“What do you think will be the most interesting?”

"I couldn't come into the changing room with you, but if you like anything, then you can go into a private room and try it on," Michael said. He smiled then and tilted his head. "What, what about them?"
He peered around then, clasping his hands behind his back. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves. There's plenty to see."

“They don’t wear enough,” Lissie said, then, and shook her head. Too much skin showing! It was improper! “I want to see everything,” she said, and smiled at him. She found a row of T-shirt’s and frowned slightly, Nope. “What do you think I’d look best in?”

Michael grinned. It was true. Fashion had changed. He had rejoined the world moderately insane, so it hadn't bothered him so much. He'd acclimated easily because nothing had made sense.'
"We can go through every aisle. It's a large circle--well. Square. We can see it all." He looked to Lissie then and admired her form platonically.
"I'm biased, of course. Something with a high waist, perhaps. A little shape. For the time of year, that may be hard." He went to a rack of dresses and began to slide through the hangers. "What would you be most comfortable in? Clothes shopping may be easier online..." It was a shame. He'd wanted to buy her something beautiful to wear, but conjured clothes always fit better anyway, didn't they? But feeling actual clothes on his body for the first time in a hundred years has been a wonderful feeling.
"Oh, how about something like this?" he asked, holding a dress up. The back was nice. It was almost Regency-inspired in the back. It was too bad the neckline was so strange.

Lissie studied the dress with a critical eye. She tsked at the front; it was unfortunate, as the back was rather nice... “Do they sell fabric here? I could make something,” she offered. She took a moment and studied Michael. “I could make you something, too,” she said, “if I had your measurements.”
She spotted a sweater and hesitated before reaching to feel the fabric. It was soft! Not nearly as uncomfortable as it looked with the lumpy yarn. “We didn’t have anything like this,” she marveled. People had discovered how to dress comfortably!

Michael smiled and put the dress back and he shook his head.
"No, we would have to go to a craft store for that." He leaned over to see what Lissie was looking at. "Indeed not! One can still be stylish and modest without all of the binding and lace. You could always buy a blouse and a skirt or, dare I suggest, slacks."

A craft store? They’d have to find one! “Is there one near where you live?” She asked.
Stylish, modest and comfortable? It was so...so different. “Slacks?” She echoed. Her eyebrows knit together. “Women wear slacks?” She wasn’t sure she’d ever be comfortable with that idea. Women dressing like men! How odd. “I like this,” she added, gesturing to the sweater.

"There is, yes," Michael said. Money would be another issue entirely, though he would have no problem funding a little trip to the craft store. Then again, they could always work with conjured supplies and wear conjured clothes.
"They do, yes. Some, maybe even most women do, but not all." He nodded at her enjoyment at the sweater. "Well, keep looking. Once you have a few things, you can try them on in the room over there." He nodded toward the hall that led to the changing rooms, guarded by a teenager at a desk.

Most women?! Was that proper now? She supposed it was modest, but... “Can we find you something, too?” She asked, looking to Michael. “You could help me choose which to try on.” Since he’d be helping decide which to get.
“Where next?” She asked, tucking the sweater under her arm. “What kind of foods do they have?”

"I don't think I need any new clothes," Michael said, then laughed. "Patience, patience. We have time. I admit that I don't know much about ladies' fashion, but I can try to assist. We can learn what you like for when we go out, hm?" He moved to another rack and began to look through. Sizing had changed quite a bit over the years, especially since the era of tailoring and handmade clothes, but he would do his best to judge that too.

Lissie studied the clothes nearest her. It was so difficult, sizing pieces by their appearance. How did modern women go about shopping? It had certainly been easier when clothes were made for the person.
“This is nice,” she said, admiring a skirt. And maybe it’d go with the sweater? It was the same color, but of a different material.

Michael looked up from the rack. Everything seemed too low-cut or short or complex for Victorian tastes. He smiled at Lissie's choice, though.
"Do you want to go try it on?" He wouldn't be able to go in with her, of course, but he could help her get a card and a room.

“Alright,” Lissie agreed. “Where do I try it on?” And maybe, it she’d found the right size, she could select others in the same size. “After, what should we look at?” She asked.

"That will be up to you and which direction you decide to go in."
Michel gestured for Lissie to follow her to the clerk, who smiled as they approached in the way customer service reps were meant to do.
"Just two today?" the clerk asked.
Michael nodded. "Just two."
The clerk produced a blue hang tag with a "2" on it and offered it to Lissie, undoubtedly expecting her to know what to do.
"You can go down there and choose a room and see if you like it," Michael said, gesturing down the hall, "I will have to wait out here, of course."

Selecting a room and going inside had been the easy part. Pulling a sweater over her head had been the opposite. It’d taken her a full ten seconds to get her head through the proper hole, while the arms had been easy. The material was soft, though, and it looked nice... Yes, she decided, looking in the mirror, she wanted this one. The skirt she’d chosen was much more straight forward. It moved when she did... it was nice.
“Can I come out for you to look?” She called to Michael. “I like it!” But did he?
