Image hosted by Photobucket.com The night had been a long and cold one. Maji couldn't recall when he last spent a night outside of the warmth and safety of his cave, or with another creautre laying behind him for that mater. At times during the night he'd rouse himself to haunting images that still tormented his sleep. Mocking his inability to remember his own past or perhaps trying to aid in the task. Either way they were frightening to the young lion... their eyes shone with pure white, no pupils to give the appearence of a soul behind them. Long white flowing manes- not at all like what the mane of a lion should look like... at least based on what Maji had seen in the one adult male he'd encountered in all his life... at least what he could remember. They spoke in a hauntingly firmilar language though Maji couldn't hear them too well. He would interupt them by shaking himself from his sleep, looking about himself with terrified gasps. Turning he would insure that the leopard was still behind him, still breathing, and still had bandages to insure that his wounds wouldn't grow wose.

As morning broke over the distant trees Maji roused once again with a groan, his droopy eyes parting just a bit to reguard the area around him. Rolling to his belly a loud yawn was given. For a moment he thought his hearing had been blurred or fuzzed from lack of sleep, his voice had changed just slightly. Deeper, but not by any means as deep as any other lion his age would probibly have been. He stretched his legs forward, stretching down his spine into his rump. His legs had grown longer, much longer. Sitting up Maji looked himself over, a long lock of white fell over his ear over an eye. Reaching up he measured out his growing mane... it was longer. Smiling a bit he got to his paws and walked to the water's edge, his bright eyes widened at the sight of himself... lords he was larger! A handsome white mane was already growing long around his neck, head, and shoulders. His body was more defined, more sculpted. Longer legs, a bit longer of a face. He smiled, giving himself a satisfied nod. "Well then. Perhaps I'll be taken more seriously now." He chuckled, turning to watch the leopard again. He sure hoped the poor thing would do all right. He'd stay and watch him until he recovered... he'd need more of that herbal water, perhaps he could catch a few fish and cover it in the medicine so it wasn't so unpleasent.

Turning he walked to the leopard, putting a paw on his forehead. No fever, that was a blessing. The herbs had done their magic and he would be on his way to recovery. "I never did get your name, sir... if you're awake perhaps an introduction will be fitting?"

Mizaku's ears twitched lazily at the feeling of something against his forehead. His radar-like hearing picked up Maji's voice, birds, and the sound of the waterfall. Slowly the leopard opened his eyes and took a quick glance over what he could see so far. Fortunate for him, the lion's odd behavior had returned Mizaku's real self... calm, easy-going, and juuuust a little bit nervous.

He stared up at Maji and sniffed the air, still slightly confused about the leaves and hide wrapped around him; and maybe a little annoyed, too. Firstly, he needed to answer... and then remember to thank the "pride-cat" who had "saved" him from Jendayi (as he thought...).
"Oh... right," the leopard replied in a raspy, tired voice, "My name is Mizaku... and uh... thanks... for helping me and everything... I really owe ya' one."

Mizaku coughed, and moved his eyes over to look at... those two shiny rocks. The ones he had found while following Jendayi. And they were laying on that same leaf... He wasn't quite sure what to do, because he didn't really feel like getting up... Instead, the tan colored "tree-cat" just stared at them peacefully.

Maji smiled softly to see the leopard respond, moving his hand from his forehead to the ground he waited patiantly for the creature to gather its wits once again, take in the surroundings, get a grasp on the situation. The leopard spoke, a raspy and dry voice... lords he had to be thirsty. Those herbs tended to do that- dry one up and all but it was a life saver for colds and what not. "No thanks are nessicary. If I'm able to help then it's my obligation as a being to do so, simple as that."

Maji also noted the discomfort at the wrappings in the leopard, his ears lowered just slightly in an apologetic look, "Those wraps will need to stay on you for a short time. You had many severe wounds, without them you'd have bled to death or gotten an infection which...", he shrugged a bit, "Would have had the same result at twice the discomfort." He knew a lot about healing-the misteavers had left behind record after record about the art of using nature to heal... unfortunately it didn't seem to have helped them in their time of need. Pushing the thoughts aside Maji took up one of the bowls he had and made his way to the water.

As he filled the bowl he couldn't help but stare at his reflection... he was growing. Was this how the others looked? Perhaps he had brothers at one time, or maybe he was the very image of his father. All were amusing thoughts that would need to be saved for a more appropreate time. Carefully he made his way back to the leopard, taking his head into his hand gently and offering the water to his mouth, "Well Mizaku, I'm Maji of the Mistweavers...unfortunately you've taken on quite the amount of injuries and will need help in recovery. I'll be fishing soon so don't worry about finding food."

Kinyamkela was lost once more.

"Laini! Makabidhi!" Her wails echoed through the undergrowth and were lost in the splashing of the waterfall.

Everything had gone wrong.

It had started when she had fallen asleep by the lake deep inside the cave. Dreams came and overtook the young lioness, too old to be a cub now but still young to cry for her parents - and her brother. This pilgrimage had seemed such a grand idea when she had set out to cross over the mountains. Days on her own had made her sturdy and practical in waking; in her sleep only was she once again so vulnerable.

Perhaps it was her meeting with Maji that awakened all her longing for family again. He resembled her brother Kisulisuli greatly, as she had noted the first time they had spoken; then recounting her pride's legends and reading the writings, she had lain down with thoughts swirling around her head. In her contemplation she had unwound her only decoratipon; strips of skin from her last kill before entering this territory, plaited with difficulty and tied around her left ankle. It sat in front of her, brown and soft at the edges where it had rubbed against her snowy fur.
After much thought, she used the closest thing to bleach a lion had to hand and collecta small pool of it, before laying the braid in it. It would be white, white as the clouds and the moon and the snow on the mountains.

Lying there in the humid, fuming atmosphere of the mysterious cave, she slept in fever dream.

And awoken, golden eyes almost unseeing, begging for a drink of water from her mother.

"Laini!"

------------------

She had to find someone. Where was Kisulisuli? He would help her. He would comfort her. As she stumbled towards the river unknown lions hovered on the edge of fever vision, watching her with liquid eyes and sad faces, every one of them marked in silver and white and blue-grey. The true Mistweavers, not her exiled Tufani-wana. As she staggered onward the watchers faded one by one, laying down their heads with a sigh before vanishing. Finally there were but a few; three lionessess and a proud king, gathered together in harmony, a beautiful girl-cub with them. But they seemed to shimmer and fade, and Kinyamkela could only watch in horror as the ailing pride could not even defend themselves as dark shadows came and stole away the cub. Eventually there was only one lioness left; she turned to the juvenile and stretched out a paw sadly before wavering and vanishing.

"NO! Kisulisuli!"

Having helped the leopard with a drink he moved back to the river. He'd have to catch a few more fish than normal, surely the young leopard was half starved on top of everything else. Maji himself hadn't eaten since morning on the previous day. Trying to sleep with his mind as full as it was and his stomache as painfully empty as it was had been quite the chore. That morning he had felt nearly ill from hunger but it had its own way of keeping its nagging stabs of protest to itself after a while. He had assured the leopard that he'd not be long so he would have to hurry.

He walked along the side of the river holding the bucket in his mouth, his destination was the fishing pond he had made for himself by weeks and weeks of stacking rocks and weaving a wooden "trap door". It was a clever little invention, he'd keep the intrails of the fish he caught and scatter them into the large ring of rocks he had made in the river. Fish of all types and sizes would come to feed and he'd close the trap door behind them, trapping them in the shallow and clear pond for him to fish out later. It was sure a life saver when most of the fish had died off during the migration season. He had many odd inovations laying around but all of them were highly effective and would credit his solitary survival from cubhood.

Setting down the bucket he looked into the pond- looks like a few other animals had taken advantage of his little invention but there was still quite a good number of fish remaining. His ears shot upwards as a cry echoed from the cave behind the waterfall. He starred off for a moment, looking slightly confused and startled. He thought... it couldn't be. She had died in the plegue. He had been left alone. Wrinkeling his brow in confusion he began back towards the waterfall, his head lowering a bit to be even with his shoulders. What was this? "Kinyamkela?", he yelled over the waterfall, hoping that if she could have her voice carry like it did, he could have the same luxury though he doubted it highly.

A voice.

A voice calling her name. "Kinyamkela!"

The young lioness whipped her head around, the edge of the river wobbling in and out of vision. And a silvery shape in the daylight of the cave entrance as she bounded through the fall.
"Kisulisuli!"
She yowled and jumped into the river, swimming with all her might towards the being on the bank. Heaving herself out, dripping wet, she fled to his side sobbing.
"Don't leave me alone, 'Suli, I was lost, I'm lost!"
Her golden eyes were still veiled, crinkled with fear and relief as she pressed blindly against the side of this saviour being.

Maji glanced up as a young lioness leapt from the mouth of the fall cave into the river. She came surging towards him blindly screaming what he could only assume to be a name. It as her... lords above and heavenly rains she had lived! As she came into an embrace with him he hardly cared that she was calling him by some other name. She was terrified, shaking... poor creature. A paw lifted to hold her head close to him, "Kinyamkela... I thought you had died..." He said softly. Lords she had grown too- hardly the cub he had seen months back before the plegue... she had been more confident then.

"You don't reconize me?", He'd not remind her who he was... obviously he must have resembled someone firmilar and dear to her. He had grown a bit himself. Even as a cub his mane was longer than normal. As an older cub it was quite longer, hanging around his shoulder, face, and neck. His nose had grown out a bit, giving him an almost fair delicate appearence to him but his eyes remained the same. A subtle wisdom and the ever-present gentle nature shining in them.

At his touch she shuddered, slowly calming down. Her breath heaved in her ribcage, and as she drew strength from another presence after her long absence the mist cleared away from her vision. Her skin under the sodden fur was still burning with fever; but she suddenly drew back, and studied the lion in front of her with growing surprise.

"Maji, not Kisulisuli," she said slowly, before lowering her head, ashamed of showing her weakness. "I'm sorry... but I thought you were dead also. Have I dreamed so long?"

The young lioness seemed slightly puzzled and defenseless, her snow-and-silver fur slowly fluffing out as it dried in the heat.

Stretching out her paws, Kali's mouth opened up into a large yawn. Closing her mouth and licking her lips, Kali straitened herself up into a standing position. Now what? What to do, what to do... Well, there was nothing to do here, deciding to go explore her new lands, she headed for the exit.

Emerging from the deep recesses of the cave her eyes quickly contracted to the sunlight. Waiting for her eyes to adjust, she quickly choose a direction and padded toward it.

Loping along for a good few minutes, she came upon a cascading waterfall. Looking for a way to cross, she eyed a few slick rocks. Heading over to them, she carefully placed a paw on the first rock. No rush, just take your time. Hopping along the rocks she finally reached the other side of the water. Letting out a deep sigh she continued on her way into the jungle, stopping every now and again to sniff at something out investigate. Well, no other lions yet, but she was bound to bump into one eventually. Following the river on the other side, she snaked her way about the vegetation that was taking advantage of the water source.

A sudden eruption from the river a bit ahead called her attention to it immediately. What was that? Well, perhaps she would run into a lion today. Picking up her pace she hurried over to the noise. Rounding a curve in the river two lions stood at the bank.

"I'm as alive as could be expected." He gave a crooked smile, his brows wrinkling a bit in disappointment that she didn't seem as excited as he hoped she would be at their reunion. Lords it was quite a last few days for the mistweaver boy. Two of his old friends that he had thought had surely perished in he plague turned up alive and well- at least physically. This one seemed heartbroken, she'd lost someone in that plague or perhaps prior to it. He couldn't be all that sure, they hadn't gotten to speak all that much on personal issues during the short time they had been friends in their younger cubhood. He looked to her, his brows moving into a concerned frown... she had been warm. Delirious... perhaps she was ill as well. She very well might have the plague- a survivor. Lords of the rains she was fortunate if that was the case. He cleared his throat, getting to all four and moving to place a gentle paw on her brow-if she'd allow him. "Lords you're burning up..."

He glanced back to where the leopard lay then back to her, giving a long sigh, "Come... I will care for you but I'm caring for another. You'll have to keep close to him so I don't have to move about as much...." He turned and walked back towards the leopard. He would need to make some more medicine, fish longer to catch more, do some reading on the matter... lords above was this another test?

The two lions were leaving the bank of the river, peering at the female lion a bit for closely her movements seemed slugish and jittery. The plauge had passed through here not long ago and very few had survived while many others had been lost. Pondering whether the female had been a fortunate survivor, she turned her attention to the male. His white mane draped over his shoulders, he was quite a handsome little lion. He seemed a bit more mature and level-headed than any other lion she had met that was his age. The runes etched on his fur reminded her of something she had seem before. Reaching back in her mind to recal the reason, the image of the cave's stone walls she had slept in came to her mind's eye. So he was a true Mistweaver eh? Those symbols definitely singled him out as a lion from these lands. Heading after the pair she decided she would get to know them better.

"Maji, Maji... anyone alive is good!" The young lioness broke into a happy skip-step beside him, her fever-emotions suddenly turned around, her eyes bright and burning. " I'll be fine, no need to care for me. I can fish. Fish is alright to hunt here, you said yesterday. Didn't you? When we explored the caves." She smiled again, twisting round to stare at the rune marked on her back. " Mistweaver caves. I'm not dreaming right? I found the ancestors? Kisulisuli will be so pleased!"

Jendayi made her way through the Mistweaver Lands. She had fled from Mizaku not more than a week ago. Yes, fled. During her vacation of sorts, she had come to a certain realization about the melodrama and this newfound truth. She had run away from something that could be so important to her. Could, but never ever would. Jendayi now knew this, knew she had hurt Mizaku beyond repair.

But, she asked herself, why do I want to still be around him. The answer would have been easy, but it most definitely wasn't. She couldn't tel herself she loved him, not even a little. She knew that if she had, she wouldn't be able to keep him safe any longer. Her eyes shifted to her leg as she lapped at a stream. The trickling water seemed to serve her buzzing, off the wall, nerves as she looked at the scar she now held proudly. It was obvious that a tuft of hair was missing around the wound and she painfully remembered what had brought about that scar-in-the-making. It was all her fault, now. She could no longer say it was in self defense. During her off time, she had realized something important. Everything she loved, was destroyed. She didn't want to accept this, and had not.

It had come in a dream. A dream that showed her a tie when she was just a tiny cub. It was of her exile, though she still didn't remember what had brought about this horrible exile from her lands. She didn't know about her stillborn child, but did know her mother had most definitely died just after Jendayi was cast away. She knew it was her fault, even when it wasn't, and still constantly beat herself up over it. And now, she was going to explain to Mizaku all that had been going through her mind when he bit her, why she lashed back, and she would readily hear him out as well.

She picked up her rock that she had earlier set down by the river. She had recently seen some lions she had been spying on wearing necklaces with rocks or feathers, maybe she would set her rock in leather of some sort? The rock had been the one thing that had kept her going, the one thing that had brought her back here. Or really, who the rock symbolized. She gave a heavy sigh as she approached the waterfall and peeked through a few branches, not caring for any other creatures that might be there, only the leopard.

Jendayi gasped as she saw him. He was just as she remembered; he was handsome. He was pushing his rocks back and forth between his paws and Jendayi wondered what she should do.

She approached him and dropped her own rock into his, her tan sparkly. She didn't find the courage to speak, ony look at his grey eyes.
