saxygirl424 I know this is kinda random, but does anyone know much about working with quarter tones? I'm just starting to explore them myself, and I'm looking for hints. I know a lot of it has to do with your personal instrument, but any help would be great. sweatdrop I think there are special fingerings for those. I don't remember, sorry. All I can remember is hearing Eugene Rousseau mention them in an interview I saw. He was clapping what I think were supposed quarter tone fingerings as he was talking, I think.

'Ello! I'm pretty new here, but I love the sax. I'm hoping to play tenor for jazz band next year, but I'm having some difficulty with switching from French Horn. Does anyone know any good beggining sax sites or something that could help me? Thanks a bunch.

(finger an A and add the 3 on your right hand and that'll give you the quartertone that's between A and Bb) That's pretty much all I know about quartertones so far though.

Idk. My ear isn't sensitive enough for me to worry about quarter tones.

So, does anyone else get really, really irritated by the fact that nobody can spell bari right? I have no idea how many times i've seen someone type about a "berry sax". Even worse, today I saw it spelled as "berry sacs".
AHHHHHH pet peeve.

We should organize the BNG saxophone thread. Like, take a list of (active!) people and um. Have special saxophone, um. Stuff. Contests. I dunno. We're awesome enough, right? At least a userlist would be good. sweatdrop

Durza the Shade I want to learn tenor. I don't play a sax yet, though. I play clarinet, and tenor's in the same key, so it will be easy to learn; I'm probably going to play it for pep band this year. you really can't look at any insturment as "easy to learn"... clarinet and sax are simliar and having them in the same key helps, but you musent get to big headed. maintain the same disapline. as if you didn't kno that.. smile

Them being in the same key won't help you much unless you have perfect pitch, or a strong sense of relative pitch.
Embouchure is the biggest issue in the change. (That's assuming you don't have breath support problems.) A lot of players are ruined early because they didn't make a smooth transfer. You'll save a lot of time if you work to get the sax embouchure right the first time, and distinct from the clarinet embouchure.
